I Bought the very rare Audi TT based off the R32 Golf at the junk auction sale. Someone drove this thing until it started falling apart in the engine bay. Hopefully we caught it quick enough and bought it cheap enough to save it and make it better than it was from the factory!

@Jax Schuster failure in the Audi world? Never! This car was sold in Europe like hotcakes, and has one of Audi's most reliable engines ever. not to mention the potential of the 1.8 T engine, there are loads of performance parts at fair prices. As for the design, let's imagine these lines in 1998 when the TT came out, and let's compare it to the horrible, old-fashioned designs of the time.

I bought a 2001 TT Roadster with the 225 HP setup. Loved that car, drove it like crazy, put 70K miles on it from 2001 to 2003. At the time was the first person in my family to buy something that expensive new. Ended up selling it for an A4 Cabriolet because I wasn’t paying to replace the dash again. The Gas gauge in the TT went bonkers and replaced the dash, third time I found the A4 instead. Then they screwed up the order and got a CVT instead of a Q and i took it since they took a bunch off. But the CVT died repeatedly and I dumped Audi for the next ten years.

If I might add, the whole VR6 concept is easily explained by starting to point out the sparkplugs and their positioning, at around 10:05, and that it's actually an in-line 6, cut in half, 45 degrees angle. It explains the exhaust heaven, and why it's such a balanced engine.

  • @wyattslunecka6988

Worth being said, my TT has h and r sway bars lowering springs and a camber kit which drastically improved the ride. That paired with michilen super sport tires, stop tech pads and rotors, and an apr tune this car it incredible to drive. Short shifters are very cheap and you can get solid solid bushing (what I have) the shifter feel it much better. Then (of course) you need a n exhaust to hear all of the sweet 1.8t sounds. Takes some work but it’s a very good car when you out it together.

The engine was also generally considered not worth the extra weight. It makes a nicer noise for sure but the 1.8T 225 engine can be remapped to 250bhp with no other modifications quite safely and pretty cheaply beyond that, while the normally aspirated 3.2 VR6 was basically stuck at or very close to 250bhp forever. The main star of the VR6 model was that DSG gear box - as Sam said, one of the first dual clutch automatic transmissions on the market and actually a pretty good transmission.
The VR6 was essentially just a heavier version of the car with less engine upgrade options. Better imo to buy the 225 turbo, and fit better suspension and ARBs to eliminate that body roll. Or just buy a 350Z.

I had a 2001 TT (225 version). I agree that it was boring in stock form. After spending a ton of $ on mods (engine, exhaust, brakes, suspension wheels, interior, and exterior, I could have bought a Porsche. However, with the changes made, it was an awesome car and was my daily driver for 15 years. It looked and drove better than new until I traded it in. It did have some quality issues. Water pumps failed several times, the convertible top's rear glass fell out. The gauge cluster was replaced under warranty, however, the new one quickly failed too.

this car is actually known as the TT 3.2. S-Line is just a styling and handling trimline package offered on all Audi model ranges and not the actual name of the car, similar to a 340i M package. and the 3.2 VR6 was actually offered with a 6 speed manual in the first model year although they are very rare. the 3.2 TT is essentially the continuation of the Corrado SLC from the 1990's.

I used to own a 2002 TT Les Mans edition. I think it was around 500 out of 5000 made. Great car and Kinda a mix between the two TTs compared here

Thats exactly what Audi did they put a very good looking body on a Golf chassis.
    It was a styling exercise
Still a fun little car but certainly not a track star.
Quatro versions are a lot of fun in the winter here in Minnesota. Can't really say that about the other contemporary sport cars you listed.

I had a 1st gen audi tt-s and it was quite fun! The 1st gen 1.8t audi tt manuals are actually really not bad. I love the audi tt with mods, if you add an exhaust, downpipe and a tune and intake a few other goodies, you can make them scream and then for handling thats an easy fix with some cheap ecs tuning coilovers and bushings.

Hey Sam I just came from a MKV r32, so your audi sister car is a dead end build. Just do a intake and suspension mod and a chip and it'll be brand new again. Not to much to do after that unless you go all out. Good luck

The rear (big)spoiler and the vents on the front wings, are accessories of the 3.2 liter version of the TT.
1.8 liter "s-line" (even in the 225 hp version) doesn't come with those goodies...

you cant compare auction prices for going rates, and the market location makes a big deal aswell, maybe cheap in Florida, but in parts like the PNW, a 3.2 in Seattle, is over $15k. sam has no idea what hes talking about.

You are utterly incorrect about the TT’s cornering. Yours must have crappy tires. Put an outstanding set of new summer tires and it will out-corner or corner as well as any other sports car. You can buy a Boxster for less than a TT.

I took a mate of mine out in my TT as he kept telling me that Audi TT's understeer (mine has Quattro factory upgraded suspension, good tires and Poly Bushes) he was totally amazed at it handling and has never mentioned it again! Boxster's of that era are Sh1t..

Samcrac my A4 also has that key but it's because sometimes the security module in them fail and the flip blade keys don't work or even lock the door or anything. My car was bought previously at a dealership and was sold with that key for $4000 to the previous owner who sold it to me for $2250 with that key.

I've gotta say I love those cheaper builds! I actually own the A3 that this TT was based on, with 1.8 engine but naturally aspirated, makes around 130 hp. It's quite fun to drive and engaging if you want to. Also it has 5 valves per cylinder. Both A3s and TTs have really nice high end and nice exhaust sound. These engines are dead reliable. Mine has over 200k miles on the clock and it's still running great! How's the Ferrari BTW? I don't have Instagram so I might have missed something

As a owner of both 1.8t Q and 3.2....i must say: 1.8 drives better in corners, probably due to less weight on the front

  • @andrewharpin6749

To sort the handling on the old mk1 tt's fit the rear springs, and anti-roll bar (sway bar for US readers) from a same generation Audi S3. At least this works with European spec cars. Not sure if the S3 was sold in the US.
Or fit the Suspension from the TT Sport, again not certain if they were sold in the US, 1.8t raised to 240Bhp removed rear seats, same bodykit as the V6, Black roof (two tone) and special wheels
1.8t mods really well as long as it's the BAM engine with the upgraded turbo they'll remap to about 280-300bhp on stock internals.

You are actually pretty lucky that the TT was in the condition that it's in. I bought mine 2 years ago for $300 and so far I had to practically rebuild the entire thing and it hasn't been driven a single mile under my ownership. But lucky for me the end is near!

I know the feeling though. I bought a 2011 bmw 335i. Religously paid on time and replaced parts as needed. My mom decided she was not selling me the house and said she was moving back in. At that point I had already taken over payment but still hadnt done a subject to loan. But anyway. We had to move out. Found a place and it was double the price. (Rent is expensive here.) I couldnt afford to fix the car anymore or make the payments. I dove it broke till it was repossessed! Had to do what I had to do.
