    I feel this often, dude. So many games just sitting around and left unplayed. Not because I don't enjoy them, but because there's not nearly enough time to give them the attention they deserve.... Great points and video, Reggie!!

    I went to a retro game store, hole in the wall kind of store, the other day. I was talking to the owner and got on to the subject of collecting. My big mouth was blabbering on about playing this game and that game, then i asked him about his collection at home and he said he had "full set" of this and "almost full set of that". So i asked him what he has been playing and he says he doesn't play games -_- I then said "what do you mean? You don't have time?" He says "Nope just into collecting". I found this wierd myself but i am an open minded guy so i didn't flip out or anything. I then told him how i only collect games that i 1. Played as a kid 2. Have an interest in playing or 3. Just have fond or sometimes helariously bad memories of playing with friends. And he said "Yeah i started out like that...then you run out of things to buy".........??????? Sorry but that actually scares me now and i don't ever want to turn into that sort of collector. It just made me learn that there is a whole different world of people involved in the market of games(aside from people like us). Each to their own...but i do not ever want to be a part of that world.

    Reggie, you're spot on. There exits a collector's culture that's more interested in having an impressive collection to SHOW rather than to appreciate. It's about impressing other people more than it's about actually enjoying what you have. It's kind of gross, really, because people roll out to the yard/garage sales or Goodwills or what have you and just buy everything up, whether they legitimately have an interest in it or not. It's a great time to be a gamer, but it's a terrible time to be a buyer. This will change. The nostalgia effect will wear off or people's friends won't be as impressed anymore and the market will drop. eBay will be flooded with stuff that previously commanded high prices.

    Reggie, some people buy games, finish them and immediately sell them off. On the opposite end, there are the shelf collectors. If buying games for beating or the shelf gives them satisfaction, then it was money well spent. Now most people fall somewhere between the two types. I personally slowly collect games and only buy games I intend to play. There is nothing wrong with tightening up a collection every now and then though.

    I've always felt that you should be able to tell something about the collector when you browse through their collection (of anything really). It is so weird to me with game collecting how people go for complete sets and hold on to expensive games that they don't really like. If it makes them happy by all means but I would never want to own every game on a console.

    Man it really was like at least a decade of my life in the late 90's and early 2000's that just seemed like a golden era for RPG's. Some of that is just my nostalgia and a lot is that it is legit a great time in RPG's. Great video man! I enjoy them all, but I do like departure from the norm type videos you do like this.

    I agree with you Reggie. I do my best to keep my collection small enough to include pretty much only games that I like to play. I usually trade/sell games that I have no intention of playing. In my opinion, it makes collecting a lot more meaningful / fun when you only have stuff you really like.

    Sometimes it can feels good to offload some things whether it videogames or something else. I got rid of a ton of games that I had just bought to own some years ago and just started focusing on certain games I knew I was going to play. Also sometimes like you said getting with the times is a good thing and can be super convenient like having those megaman and megaman x game collections to play instead of the originals. Clearing out old games can potentially give you focus to pick up and complete newer titles. Good video!

    In recent years, I sold alot of stuff to pay bills. That was a learning experience because back when I first started selling stuff, I didn't know about ANY local retro game stores. I kinda feel ripped off from that first year, but I also didn't know better.
    Then I discovered the frustration of regular employees not being as helpful as managers when selling stuff. I butted heads over a new NES game from retroUSB. Employee kept saying it was a reproduction. A manager or owner had bought another retroUSB game from me a few weeks earlier. I didn't know anyone's names, and I got angry enough to be at the risk of saying something I'd regret later. There was no manager in the store at the time. I never returned to the store and it's been a few years now. I found a new store that was closer to me. Not the same selection but they seemed more fair with me when selling stuff.
    I'm not really a fan of collectible prices on games unless I'm the one selling it. I gotta be honest. If I need money, I want all I can get. I'm not crazy about buying Alien Brigade for the 7800 at $70 no matter how cool it was. I felt like an idiot when I accidentally got Crazy Taxi for the Dreamcast for $80 - new, unopened in 2016. (I had a used copy saved to my cart on Amazon. It was sold so Amazon replaced it with the next new one available which I didn't double check before placing the order. Stupid mistake.)

    Fun video a lot of truth here, as for me I have never looked down on people that sell their games as I do not know why and everyone is on a tight budget. Luckily I have not had to sell off any games I have bought, but I HAVE given away games to friends and family I do not play anymore (an know I never will). Subbed.

  • @DoYouNerd
    @DoYouNerd 6 років тому

    Great points and a fantastic video man. We have so many games that we KNOW we'll never play but for us it really is a time constraint. Fortunately, we're able to drag people over on occasion and that's when some of them DO get played because they'll be great memories for others, or brand new gems to try out.
    Sadly, Tom has had to sell off is collection a couple of times in the past, often for specific reasons, and it always stinks having to build the collection up again, but times like that DO put things in perspective and as far as collecting, it can help make you a better collector with more respect for the hobby than maybe what you had before.

    I totally agree with all you’ve said, Reggie. Keeping games just for the keeping’s sake is just not doing anything for you in the long run. It’s like storing bad music on your computer. You’ll always skip those songs you don’t really like, but at one point you thought you would listen to them at another time or when you’re in a different mood. A cluttered collection is always exhausting for me personally.

    Honestly it definitely is a good idea to do a purge of your game collection every now and then. I mean I get the whole collecting mentality and how cool it feels to have a large collection, but at the end of the day, you really don't need to have such a collection.
    It's why I took the plunge a while back and sold *everything* from my PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP collection on my eBay (www.ebay.com/usr/charlie.i.kim629) and I'm also trying to sell my Vita and everything.
    I just didn't have space at home, I don't have much time for games, and I've been playing on the PS4 and I figure that if I 'start over' with collecting games on the PS4 and beyond, it'll be more than enough since a lot of the games I really liked get a remaster/remake on the PS4 so it's fine IMO.

    star ocean is one of the rare rpg franchises that progressively got worse with each sequel... certainly not a franchise that can hang with the best of them. snes classis is fantastic... not to mention you can hack it to run nes games with the native built in emulator as well, making it twice as valuable. it is just amazing to think that a loaded snes classic with 250 snes/nes games on it -- emulated near flawlessly -- will only cost you $100. i could never convince myself to start collecting retro games for this reason. game collecting for ps3 and ps4 is more my jam. agreed about collecting only the games that are truly meaningful to you... when i see complete collections for wii etc, it makes me feel sorry for the collector -- chances are he/she has an unhealthy, compulsive personality/addiction and is unable to control himself/herself.

    Love the message, it's not a bad thing to let go of a game you're not planning on playing. Ever since building a PC, I've been a little more lax with what I really need in physical format. For some people, collecting full collections is a hobby and that's okay too

    Cool video and this really has me thinking. I love my NES collection as it really takes me back to when I started really getting into games. The thing is, I really don't like to play them anymore. They just don't hold my interest for long. I am at a point where I am thinking I should just sell them as opposed to having something sit on my shelf for me to look at. Heck, my kids don't even like them much, so what's the point. You are speaking words that I need to hear, I just need to do it.

    I'd like to see trend collecting cool off, see streamers with these massive collections, just to have, shelves full of nes and snes, and they don't play anything older than a n64, everyone likes to blame metal Jesus, but (by volume) these old games weren't considered main stream, *but* we now have a main stream populous trying to collect a limited number of games, that's what drives up the prices

    I have sold a bunch of games over the years. I did have a complete NES collection mostly all CIB. I ended up seElling most of it as they were worth so much, and I paid very little for them. The money I got for the three adult games and Stadium Events was crazy to me. After completing it and playing them for years it was time to let them go. I have kept about 150-200 NES games that I like to play and the rest went. I have also sold many other sets and games. Like you said they sit there for years and you don't touch them. Might as well let them go to a new person who will enjoy them.

    Most of my collection has been curated before I would add stuff to it. I only have 800 physical titles and it's gotten harder and harder to add stuff that I actually want. I have debated on selling some stuff off, but the FOMO would be too much and it would go back on my shelf.

    I only sell duplicates I get in lots, and sometimes my large collectors editions because they take up so much room. A game on the shelf takes so little space, and my mood changes over months/years. There were plenty of games in the past I thought I'd never want to play again, but now wish I could. so I try to never sell a game now if I only have 1 copy.

  • @misterkeebler

    It's so tricky trying to sell stuff. I always fear having seller's remorse and wanting something back later. I agree with you about the SNES Classic making me care slightly less about having the carts for everything. Kinda funny how the games you got rid of (the megaman snes titles) are the main games i would never give up! Haha. I play the X games and MM7 several times a year. But the modded Classic definitely has made me go back and look at games i could sell that i'm not as attached to, like Harvest Moon or Pocky and Rocky 2 (my nostalgia is much higher for the first Pocky Rocky).
    My new collecting addiction has been the Switch though. I'm not sure if it's just the style of games that go to the Switch or what, but i get a lot of the same feelings buying a new physical Switch title that i did with retro collecting. There are a ton of gems on the system.

    If you have games of value laying around that you haven't plaid, always pop it in before going to sell it. I've considered selling Metal Warriors a few times (probably should have, it's likely peaked) but then I popped it in, played it for a bit and found myself really enjoying it still.The only expensive games I own are games I genuinely enjoy. I don't tend to sell my games, I usually just trade them but that means waiting for a store to have what I want.
    I've sold or traded games I've been done with only to have the value shoot up a couple months later...and paid more for games I sold that I thought I was done with, only to try again and end up enjoying. It only sucks because I know I could have gotten more games off of my wantlist if I'd waited. It's pretty hard to tell when a game is capped in value, I can't count how many times I've heard certain games or certain systems have peaked in price only to shoot up again.

I got addicted to digital games because I could store them and not have to move them. Now my digital collection is bigger than my physical and as much as I miss having the physical copies, when I want to play something I have it and I have room in my house to breathe. :) I gave a bunch of games to my local Library. Some Libraries will take them and lend them. If your local library doesn’t maybe suggest it. They are all looking for ways to increase visitation and engagement.

    All great points! Unless you own a museum there is no need to own every game ever released! - Personally I don't really like ridding of games, the games I do own I enjoy for one reason or another whether it be just enjoying the game, the nostalgia behind the game, or if a friend and I have a great time with that game when we get together are all reason enough for me to want to keep those games. But on the other hand if a game on my shelf has no meaning to me then I'm probably better off with the couple Pounds/Dollars I could sell it for.

    I can relate to this. Just went through my storage and found lots of goodies but to the same note, what am I doing with all of this stuff?! Going through the games was really fun but a friend was with me and I just game him the older games (which I loved) bc they were in storage for 10+ years. I'm not playing them and he will. That's it, they need a home:) I will say this, when I buy a game, I have every intention to play it and beat it! Then the backlog of games occurs and 10+ years later happens.

      VideoGameCollector If the game is old who can deside it value ? the market? no its you, you have the choice to sell it for the same price everyone does or sell it below market value or hell if you find the right person and market the game very well you might be able to sell it for above market value.
      What's important is the matter of profit or loss, how much you paid for the game and how much to sell it for on order not to loss money on it.
      I mean i wouldnt mind selling a 200$ for 100$ if had bought it yesterday for 10$.

For me personally when it comes to collecting, I only tend to go for games exclusive to said platform(s), and games that are only available on console(s) only. Binging and purging is extremely foolish behavior. Purges might be the stupidest thing out of the two though.
    Protip: NEVER sell anything that you might even have an inkling of playing/using at some point in the future.

    • @misterkeebler
      @misterkeebler 6 років тому

      'purging' is not a bad thing if someone wants to get out of the hobby. And if someone really has an inkling to play, the overwhelming majority of games have a cheap way to play them...legally or illegally lol. But even with compilation discs, ports, reboots, etc, it's pretty easy to cheaply repurchase many games.
      I do agree that binging is not wise though. Binging makes it far more likely to buy things you never truly wanted, or buying things for less sensible reasons that make it more likely to lead to an unnecessary selloff

    Good discussion! 🎮😊👍

    Great video. I'm definitely in this process too of clearing out the things I won't play again and putting it towards things that I want. It just doesn't make sense to hold onto things that others could be getting enjoyment out of.

    I swear RR you are my brother from another mother! I sold off a lot of games that I realized I just won’t touch. I sold these games via eBay last week. I used some of the money to buy a motorcycle

    I just sold a bunch of games like a month or so ago. Realizing that there's some games that I have no strong attachment to. I sold a few rare games in there, but have no desire to play them again.

    Cheers for the video. I used to think of myself as a “collector” but have changed over the years and just get games I wanna play nowadays. So I see myself as a gamer that is into interesting games and buy things to pursue my curiosity. I spend more time contemplating and researching prior to purchasing since I only have limited space. Cheers and keep on gaming 👍

    I totally feel what your saying. I always pass up GREAT NES SEGA N64 games and accessories and really though only buy when it’s stupid cheap. Other than that I stay on a dedicated platform Xbox/360 ps1/2 I like sharing stuff to fellow collectors about said finds because it’s a community and we help each other out. Stay humble brotha!

    I am going to sell of all my games that I have played and am bored off. In order to get some extra money AND help me finish my backlog. Backlog now is some JRPGs on ps3 like Tales of series, all of them on ps3, and FF 13-2.
    But I will keep ALL of my xbox 360 games, just because they are so nostalgic for me, because the best time in my life was when I rented and finished 2 xbox 360 games every week during 2010-2012. Great times, gonna keep my 360 games even the bad ones are okay to play. But the rest of my games are mostly boring.

    At SRGE this year I bought 2 games that I used to have. As a dumb kid I sold off Double Dash and WarioWare Smooth Moves and I really liked those games so I just had to have them back again. With Gamecube games being so popular and expensive now I just had to deal with overpaying for Double Dash.

    I find that as I've gotten older I am more picky with what games I like compared to when I was younger.
    Even when I have watched reviews on games before buying them I still end up buying games that I don't end up enjoying. Which results in games just sitting on my shelf not being played.

    It’s weird you bring up Star Ocean, because I literally just bought SO: First Departure and SO: Second Evolution for the PSP last week (and they just arrived yesterday). Never heard of them until I saw them while just clicking around on eBay. Then read quite a few favorable reviews and decided to make the purchases.

    I had a huge SNES collection butI I needed to sell most of it back in early 2000 to raise some money. It was one of my biggest regrets. That along with selling Suikoden and Suikoden II, God I really regret that sale.

    Some of the games I would sell are the ones that I know for a fact will not be willing to replay it again. Ex. RPGs, walking sims, and games that have a twist ending such as heavy rain.

    • @jangobango2847
      @jangobango2847 4 роки тому +1

      This actually doesn't make sense for heavy rain as there are multiple endings

    Reggie, when it comes to valuable games like Stadium Events, it is hard to sell. I would feel an auction house would be better as there is too many scammers on Ebay and people won't have that kind of money at tradeshows.
    As things are now, I have to start unloading Sega CD systems myself. I got 7 of them, most were repairs. The repairs are pretty easy normally. It is a good system, but you have to remember to plug it in or keep it plugged in it you can lose your saves. You also need to remember the backup cart uses a battery. Having a little bit of solder skills is useful for retro game collecting as batteries will have to be replaced eventually.

    Honestly I haven't sold a game since I started collecting. My taste in games changes so often that I always fear I will regret it. I hate to hoard games that collect dust but I'm still regretting selling all my childhood games from before I really started collecting, I don't want to have that feeling again.

  • @djdeus
    @djdeus 6 років тому

    If I found Stadium Events I would take a picture of me holding it, humping it (LOL) and then sell it. I can’t justify having that in the collection. It’s a grail, yes, but my views on collecting have changed. I got rid of a lot of stuff but the one thing I’ll never part with is PS1/PS2 and a few other things in the collection that either I have nostalgic attachments to or fun to play.

    Yeah I've been collecting games on Steam I go to a website called Humble Bundle and pay $12 a month for subscription and they give you about $200 in Steam key codes every month of random games. But I have so many games now on steam I've been starting to give them away because it's like I'm never going to play all them but someone else will enjoy them.

    I recently sold my PSP 3000 with 41 games. I have a hard time holding the system comfortably now a days and I still have my O.G PSP 1000 model with custom firmware. I don't need 2 PSP's!
