Prince wasn’t talking about ‘guitar-chops’. He recognised the way Nuno expresses his creativity and personality through his playing. Prince encompasses the same flare and fluidity. They both just ooze character. It’s very rare so Prince would’ve recognised one of his own. As someone already said, ‘talent recognises talent’.
Recognizing one of his own is the one thing that Prince could do that Jimi Hendrix couldn't. You can't recognize one of your own when you're one of a kind. I'm glad you agree that Prince wasn't 👍
It's the combination of (obviously) technical skills, sheer musical instinct, showmanship / presentation, songwriting, producing, not pinning yourself down to any particular style, the passion and drive behind everything you do musically... Prince certainly would've recognised all of that in Nuno.
Prince would often elevate people in his presence by saying that they were the greatest this and that. That was part of his character to build up and compliment those around him.
He was also very prompt to trash whoever he felt did deserve it. From what I understood of Prince, he did not feel obligated by anything in any sort of way. Like "bienséance". If I am not wrong, you can search for it on the web, he actually made some pretty negative comments on people who thought pretty high of themselves. But generally speaking, he would always encourage rather than put down.
And Nuno 'hates' (read respects). Nuno actually said I 'hate' you, and praised Richie Kotzen for his guitar skills and diversity. Richie who? Yep Ritchie Kotzen, one of the most undervalued guitar players in the world...
Prince was very kind, I do appreciate Mr Bettencourt guitar and composer(s skills but to say he's the 3rd guitar player in the world is a. bit exagerated from Mr Prince,...though I understand the root meaning NB is impressive live and has a great charisma.
Who would you put in that spot then? I think it’s obvious to anyone with any sense that Nuno truly is top 3 in the world, and that’s just on writing ability ALONE forget about technique and passion, Which are both very high up on the list as well. His musicality is unmatched.
No, it's not an exaggeration at all. From like 1988 to 1994 he was consistently the cover boy on every guitar magazine and mopping up on readers polls. It's accurate. Ask Brian May what he thinks. Ask John Mayer. Ask Steve Vai. They will all convey the same sentiment.
It seems Nuno has A&R and PR Management really trying to push the concept that he's the best guitar player in the world. If you listen to the band Extreme just for the guitar, then what's the point of him playing in that band. He's top-notch at a certain style, and adequate at some others, but nowadays there's really no One greatest guitar player in the world. Just greatest guitar players that you like at a particular genre and vibe of music you prefer.
High praise, coming from Prince, as (in my opinion) he was one of the best, yet most underrated guitar players, of all time.
Wow. That was a great story. Just shows how Greatness knows Greatness ❤️

@@kuerst Just stumbled across this silliness...lol. Just hate for the sake of hating.

It's because you are, Nuno 💜
When one of your musical heroes makes ir clear that you're a musical hero...wow..

Prince would often elevate people in his presence by saying that they were the greatest this and that. That was part of his character to build up and compliment those around him.
In this case, he didn't necessarily need to say this unless he was truly impressed with what he was hearing.

Prince was only underrated as a guitarist by the general public Not by other noted Musicians
Prince is right
Prince wasn’t the best guitarist in the world but he was in the top one, and I’ve seen them all.
And Nuno 'hates' (read respects). Nuno actually said I 'hate' you, and praised Richie Kotzen for his guitar skills and diversity. Richie who? Yep Ritchie Kotzen, one of the most undervalued guitar players in the world...

It’s not really exaggerated, it’s just chat. Nobody is the best guitarist in the world, let alone the third best. It’s purely subjective.
@@brendanpmaclean Completely. agreed.
He probably meant top 3 at that time and it is not undeserving at all. Nuno has killer chops, he is funky, a great rhythm player and he can sing too.

Nuno is one of my favorites for 30 yrs now - but man he has some unworthiness issues
