I cant believe how this turned into literally one of the greatest musicals of all time, and not only that but legit one of the greatest pieces of art of all time.

Absolutely fascinating view on how different Hadestown once was. I still think the current version from London to Broadway is the quintessential and best version of what Hadestown is, but seeing the earlier, more gritty and "dirty" versions is still very interesting.
I love how each iteration of the show has something to appreciate, like how Hades looks like some kind of filthy coal boss here. Thanks so much for putting this up!
Cross-referencing with "Working On A Song" I managed to compile this guide 0:08 - Epic I 0:40 - Way Down Hadestown 1:18 - ????? I feel like this is Hey Little Songbird Intro 1:49 - When The Chips Are Down 2:40 - Wait For Me 3:20 - Our Lady of the Underground 3:50 - Everything Written Reprise (cut; replaced with Flowers) 4:20 - Epic III 5:05 - Lover's Desire (cut; replaced with Epic III Instrumental) 5:22 - His Kiss The Riot 5:42 - Doubt Comes In 6:28 - Cloud Machine (cut; replaced with We Raise Our Cups) 7:20 - ?????
I'd agree to 1:18 being HLS; you can see her calling Orpheus' name and in some live performances of the studio album, that screechy string style is how they do the intro to HLS, the transition from Lovers' Desire to His Kiss The Riot, and stuff like that.
Saw Anais perform solo at Songbyrd in DC in 2018. Before playing a couple of tunes from the show, she mused, "The road is long, but we hope it leads to Broadway." She sure wasn't kidding about the road being long.
There’s a recording of the 2010 studio album, but nothing earlier that I can find (and let me tell you, I’ve been looking.) Though, if you find Jake Bush on this site (should have a bit under 50 subs), he posted nearly a full production of a showing of their 2010 tour, from Club Passim in Massachusetts.
So I think this is the full tracklist for the 2007 Vermont productions of Hadestown: Epic, Pt. 1 Way Down Hadestown Everything Written Hey little Songbird Gone, I'm gone When the chips are down Wait for me Why We Build the Wall Our Lady of the Underground Everything Written Reprise If it's true Papers How long Epic, Pt. 2 Lovers Desire His Kiss, the Riot Wait for me Reprise Doubt comes in Cloud Machine Hobo's Lullaby I'm hoping to be able to get the full lyrics for each of the songs, however a lot of assumptions are going to have to be made for what exactly was a part of the 2007 production.
I’d vote putting everything written before way down hadestown, sort of like how in the current version it’s all I’ve ever known, with the romance being interrupted by WDH
I have yet to listen to/see the entirety of Hadestown, but I did recently learn about the VT origins. Now today I’m chuffed to learn you guys put this on at the same opera house I did some shows at as a kid. Small world :)
I like that it had a horror, Frankenstein-esque vibe as I feel that really complements the music well. What's the use of making folk music if you're going to take away all the grit and dirt from it. Ah well, I guess the Broadway show did make money
My favorite performance was at the Barre Labor Hall. Everyone was fabulous, the show was tight, the sets were creative, the whole performance was mesmerizing. The cherry on top for me was Sarah Grace-when she's good she's very very good-and she was great that day. Good times. Thanks, Ben for the memories :)
The Fates costumes were meant to evoke telephone operators / secretaries for Hades / "nurses" for the workers. Not just the mines but a power station and company town
@@Bentmatchstick Hey Ben, I'm just finding this wonderful compilation. I'm currently playing one of the Fates on the first national tour of Hadestown, and it's such a gift to see this clips and learn more about the long history of this show! I was wondering if there are any longer audio recordings of this Vermont production - I would be so interested in listening to them if so! Thanks so much for putting this up.
In this original production in Vermont, the above ground world had props, all handled with great care. When we arrive in Hadestown, the props were pantomimed, to evoke a type of dream-myth. You'll notice Hades "holding a syringe", but his gesture looks more like some kind of snake bite.....
I cant believe how this turned into literally one of the greatest musicals of all time, and not only that but legit one of the greatest pieces of art of all time.
Definitivamente! É impressionante como essa história ressoa e é tão poderosa...
It became a great little musical and then turned horrid on Broadway. Great shame

I love the evolution of Persephone as a character, going from more of a sad motherly victim to being more angrily complicit with her own flaws

There's a few rust belt references so you could maybe call it dieselpunk
Wish I could watch a recording of this whole thing
This is so weird.
I want to see all of it
Hobo's lullaby in the end of the show is such a great choice. Orpheus is a lonely soul, yet he has this one bittersweet melody of being free.
I wait for the day a full recording of this releases

This is the rough unpolished version and the Broadway version is the cut and polished gem.

Old comment I know but I’d argue that lovers desire wasn’t replaced, just renamed.

God I love the hadestown rendition of hobo's lullaby at the end, it's one of my favorite songs if hers
Thanks so much for share this! For historical purpose, will wonderful to see a full show from this.
The steampunk aesthetic it had here...
Man, I hope someone kept a full recording of at least the audio for the earlier productions!

Really is amazing to see the evolution of this show, such humble beginnings, yet you can absolutely see the potential even this early on
It’s amazing to see what a different beast the show was in this iteration.
I WANT THE WHOLE THING
I'd love to see a video of the whole show, or maybe just select songs like this version of Way Down Hadestown and some of the cut songs.
This is so insane to watch and compare with the current version. The aesthetic of this one is really cool though
