This was the song that cemented my love for Dónal Finn’s interpretation of Orpheus, this is what made him my favourite.
Agreed. Just saw him last night and thought the same.
I saw this show yesterday and I had goosebumps throughout this song, the power, vulnerability and determination in his voice, I felt like I was flying
I was there yesterday too !! This was definitely my favourite number from it!
His ANGER… The POWER in his voice as he screams “Is THIS how the world is?!”… I love it.
And the new ending! Definitely more decisive and rallying than lost and searching. “Is this how the world will STAY?” is also a great follow-up to “Is this how the world is?”
I actually hate it, too out of caracter for Orpheus frankly...
@@amatalefayRight?? Imo this really is the definite version of this song, and Dónal knocked it out of the darn park
I saw this 2 days ago and that part made me hold my breath, I was on the edge of my seat.
@@UncommonManFromEarth I actually think it's just a little more of a blend of the pre-Broadway versions and the final piece. I don't think it's a mischaracterization; Reeve's Orpheus was a huge change from the kind of suaver, less noticably neurodivergent (because they hadn't MADE that decision yet) Orpheus from workshop or prior (not the preview version but NYTW or the earlier concept albums), and I think leaning into him being the one everyone listens to and wants to speak in the beginning and being passionate about his feelings while still being awkward, socially, is a good mix of the two.
ugh I love the west end production so much, I left thinking I wouldn’t be able to listen to Donal Finn’s version of this again but I’m so glad that you’ve uploaded it, tysm!!
Honestly such an incredible version of the song. Like i adore Reeve but this interpretation is so different and heart wrenchingly beautiful.
I also adore his interpretation of "Doubt Comes In." I really got the impression he was going mad, so it makes THAT moment make so much more sense.
Agreed 100%
Oh my god, I went to see him (Dónal) 3 times, and each time it was so gut wrenching and beautiful. But the last time I saw him, was his very final performance for West End. And oh my god, each line was screamed and yelled and sobbed. It broke me
The absolute despair in his voice that gradually turns into determination! A fan of this
I saw this show today having been a fan for years and, after holding it together for most of the song, the lyric change absolutely shattered me. Loved it! My favourite aspect of the show is the sociopolitical themes and to me the lyric change really hammered in the central message. 'Look at this, look at the inhumanity of this. Does this feel right to you? Interrogate that feeling and use it to drive you towards a better world.' Absolutely nailed it, and with such brilliant cast and creatives, who's surprised? ❤
When I went to see this I had a number of expectations where I knew I would cry (Flowers, Epic 3, Wait for Me). THIS was not on the list, it took me completely out of left field. Dónal Finn brought so much emotion, so much pain and anger to this, absolutely shook me to the core. By the end, I wanted to get up and stand with him and the workers.
The lyric change is really cool! I actually quite like it, sort of focusing on inspiring the group rather than him being lost, and the callback to “to the world we dream about” quote
now THAT is orpheus
Donal is orpheus, i need an official west end recording IMMEDIATELY
Prayers have been answered
God i wanna see this show again. Dónal Finn is SUCH a spectacular Orpheus, and the rest of the cast is on their A game as well
I saw the show a few days ago and I Donàls performance of If it’s true was absolutely marvellous! His acting was heart wrenching. His vocals so strong! Still can’t believe what I got to witness. It really really really was fantastically played
Saw the show on the west end tonight after being a fan of the show for years and this song absolutely floored me, i love his Orpheus
...man, a couple lines in and I burst into tears. Damn.
I didn't really like his preview performances that the official Hadestown channel posted a while ago, but he sounds great even from this fan recording. You can really hear how much emotion he is putting into it. I am glad the West End is getting an amazing interpretation of this fantastic musical :)
His actual performance was so much better than any recordings I've seen truly communicate. Especially in Epic III... I believed that he was touched by the Gods with all my heart
Bro said "join a union".
This changed my whole life, not to be dramatic
I went back to watch Hadestown just for Dónal - absolutely worth it!! I love his interpretation in this
i desperately need a cast recording of the uk cast
Oh I'm so glad you have these. I wish I would've seen Hadestown sooner so I could've seen it a second time in the west end but I only saw it two days before leaving London and I won't make it back before it's gone. :( I love Donal Finn's Orpheus so much
Absolutely stunning
i saw this yesterday and it’s safe to say i am not okay!!!
What a performance! 😢😭🥺
all Hail Dónal Finn
Lyrics
Orpheus:
If it's true what they say
If there's nothing to be done
If it's true that it's too late
And the girl I love is gone
If it's true what they say
Is this how the world is?
To be beaten and betrayed
And then be told that nothing changes
It'll always be like this
If it's true what they say
I'll be on my way
Hermes:
And the boy turned to go
'Cause he thought no one could hear
But everybody knows that walls have ears
And the workers heard him
Workers:
If it's true what they say
Hermes:
With their hammers swingin'
Workers:
What's the purpose of a man?
Hermes:
And they quit their workin'
Workers:
Just to turn his eyes away?
Hermes:
When they heard him singin'
Workers:
Just to throw up both his hands?
Hermes:
No hammer swingin'
Workers:
What's the use of his backbone?
Hermes:
No pickaxe ringin'
Workers:
If he never stands upright?
Hermes:
And they stood and listened
Workers:
If he turns his back on everyone?
Hermes:
To the poor boy singin'
Workers:
That he could've stood beside
Orpheus:
If it's true what they say
I'll be on my way
But who are they to say
What the truth is anyway?
'Cause the ones who tell the lies
Are the solemnest to swear
And the ones who load the dice
Always say the toss is fair
And the ones who deal the cards (deal the cards)
Are the ones who take the tricks
With their hands over their hearts
While we play the game they fix
And the ones who speak the words (speak the words)
Always say it is the last
And no answer will be heard
To the question no one asks
So I'm askin' if it's true
I'm askin' me and you
And you
And you
I believe our answer matters more than anything they say
Workers:
We stand and listen
Orpheus:
I believe if there is still a will then there is still a way
Workers:
We're standing with him
Orpheus:
I believe there is a way
I believe in us together
More than anyone alone
Workers:
We're standing near him
Orpheus:
I believe that with each other, we are stronger than we know
Workers:
We hear him
Orpheus:
I believe we're stronger than they know
I believe that we are many
I believe that they are few
Workers:
We're standing
Orpheus:
And it isn't for the few
To tell the many what is true
Workers:
We understand him
Orpheus:
So I ask you:
Brother, look around today (standing)
Is this how the world will stay? (standing)
There must be another way (standing)
Is it true?
Is it true what they say?
thank so so much!!! do you have the other songs as well? Greatly appreciate you uploading these!
3:48 I can’t quite make out that last lyric- “brother look around your ____”? It kinda sounds like neighbor but idk
“Brother look around today, is this how the world will stay”
@@AGlitzyFinaleOh got it thanks, that makes way more sense lol. Thanks for uploading these btw!

Is it true?
Is it true what they say?
Love this recording, what date is this from/what day did you go and see it?
does anyone have a full audio im literally desperate
Suggest you listen to Anaïs Mitchell singing it, Jim Moray does a great version too 😊
Really like this rendition of the song but I hope he isn’t putting too much strain on his vocal chords. I saw it a few weeks ago and he did spectacular but it sounded like he was on his last legs. There were a few understudies performing as well so I assume a sickness was going around the cast. A few days later they had to cancel a performance.
Do you have wait for me??
I personally did not find his voice to be anything special, but his acting is amazing. I feel like he's just yelling, whereas others sang, but when I went I felt like he was yelling at the audience the entire time. Some members in the audience said the same thing too, but the show was still great!
When did you go to see it? Because I went last Thursday, and I think he sang this song a little more than he did here.
