Fun fact! Lillias White also voiced the center/main muse in Disney's Hercules. Who is credited as being Calliope. AKA the mother of Orpheus. So with Hermes being Orpheus's parental figure in Hadestown, I found this to be a cool coincidence.
Okay, but the staging of Orpheus is hilarious when Hades comes into the picture, he does a little gazelle leap to get in front of his wife, then he literally has to put his hand in front of her to stop her from jumping in. Poor dude.
super late to this but when i first saw this a year ago what i couldn't stop thinking about is just how vastly matured that one gesture was. as reeve carney grows into the role so does orpheus and in that second of him looking at hades' arrival (in turn, persephone's departure). other performances simply have orpheus moving to eurydice's side to shield her, and this gesture is only orpheus' own first taste of suspicion, wariness, doubt. but when he JUMPS? the mere action is a desperate attempt to hide away eurydice from hades' view. like he understands just what kind of _something_ is going to happen next. the quick block and the small shake of the head as eurydice aims for a peek of the underworld, a plea. i can't put my finger on it but there's something so aware about the way this specific orpheus percieves the world around him, and something so nostalgic about the way he reacts.
