note for anyone unfamiliar with the musical: while it it’s very relevant to america’s current political climate, it was not written as a result of it. it was written a decade before the wall was even proposed!! just pointing this out because a lot of people seem to think this musical was written to be completely political when really, the politics are subtle in the show and aren’t as dense as it seems to be!

    • @erinmckenna605

To be specific, it was written in 2006 and has had almost no revision since! Thanks for putting this comment, this song has such a beautiful meaning behind it and while it is incredibly relevant right now people tend to forget the original intention and just assume it's a political statement.

What's really scary is that people are taking the song and thinking it's somehow supportive of Trump's wall, when the entire point of the song is what gross circular logic a wall and general separation is.

      The Enemy is POVERTY.
Why do we build the Wall.....?
We build the Wall to Keep out the Enemy.
Every Illegal Immigrant Costs American Taxpayers around $30,000 per year.
(how much do u make per year?)
now multiply 30,000 × 1,000,000 (for this year already).
then add Just Ten Years of traffic, that Taxpayers Support.
      3 Trillion dollars.
      if thats not enough,
The burden on our Schools, Healthcare, and Law Enforcement costs Taxpayers in DEGRADED SERVICES.
      so, nice try.

This is the longest example of circular logic I've ever heard. For those who don't know what that is, a simple example is saying that animals that are cold blooded like to sunbathe, and cats like to sunbathe, so cats are cold blooded because cold blooded animals like to sunbathe.
The example I gave is a two-step circle, this song has six steps. Why do we build the wall? To keep out the enemy, who is poverty (and by extension, those in poverty), we keep them out because they want something we have that they don't, which is work, the work being the wall we're building to keep out the enemy, and so on and so on. The logic trail doesn't reach an end point of evidence, eventually the evidence is the point the arguer is trying to make.

it's truly wild seeing people say "it's not a political song". like, yes it is! just, absolutely agonizing that people think trump just appeared fully grown out of the woods one day and was not the result of the far right in the US building its power for decades.
what's even more wild to me is all the right wingers who thought this was a conservative anthem, when the song literally goes "we have to build the wall to keep out these people who want what we have! what is it we have? well, this wall to work on!" like it's so obviously circular and absurd, a really elegant metaphor for how capitalism sustains itself

@@douglasparkinson4123 George MacDonald, a great influence on Lewis imagined the worst part of hell was just a black infinite empty space where you're all alone, with your own thoughts... *forever*
But MacDonald was a universalist meaning he believed all those who go to hell eventually repent and get out.

@@christophersnedeker2065 its an interesting mark between introverts and extroverts. for some, hell is simply being alone, and for others, the idea of being stuck with people, with no way to leave, is worst.
personally i find the idea of being stuck in a room with people forever horrible. an empty room with 4 chairs and 4 people. nothing to do but sit around and just be with people.
      hell itself.

    Hades:]
Why do we build the wall
    My children, my children?
Why do we build the wall?
    [Company:]
Why do we build the wall?
We build the wall to keep us free
That's why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free
    [Hades:]
How does the wall keep us free
    My children, my children?
How does the wall keep us free?
    [Company:]
How does the wall keep us free?
The wall keeps out the enemy
And we build the wall to keep us free
That's why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free
    [Hades:]
Who do we call the enemy
    My children, my children?
Who do we call the enemy?
    [Company:]
Who do we call the enemy?
    The enemy is poverty
And the wall keeps out the enemy
And we build the wall to keep us free
That's why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free
    [Hades:]
Because we have and they have not
    My children, my children
Because they want what we have got
    [Company:]
Because we have and they have not
Because they want what we have got
    The enemy is poverty
And the wall keeps out the enemy
And we build the wall to keep us free
That's why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free
    [Hades:]
What do we have that they should want
    My children, my children?
What do we have that they should want?
    [Eurydice:]
What do we have that they should want?
We have a wall to work upon
We have work and they have none
    [Hades:]
And our work is never done!
    My children, my children!
And the war is never won
    [Hades & company:]
    The enemy is poverty
And the wall keeps out the enemy
And we build the wall to keep us free
That's why we build the wall
We build the wall to keep us free
We build the wall to keep us free...
    [Hermes:]
    Then Hades told Eurydice:
    [Hades:]
There are papers to be signed
    Step into my office
    [Hermes:]
And he closed the door behind
Now, a lot can happen behind closed doors; that's for sure, brother, that's a fact!
But a lot can happen on the factory floor, when the foreman turns his back
    [Persephone:]
    Anybody want a drink?
