I was in MInsk for 0ne week last Summer studying Russian, I met so many friendly and interesting prople, On the city tour bus met a group of Minsk after work party group, they shared their food and drink with me, when the tour finished asked me to come to the pub . resturants and hotels wine are good.. will return soon

So I’m from Kildare and I quite like Germany. I went to see Germany vs Belarus in a Euro 2020 qualifier in Mönchengladbach last December. Didn’t know much about Belarus before I decided to go to that match. Watched some documentaries and did some research about the place in general. One of the videos I watched was from Vice and it was basically talking about how Belarus is more or less a dictatorship of sorts and very authoritarian..? Found that quite interesting and it’s really fascinating to hear about an Irish person living there. I know Vice aren’t really going to show the good parts/every day living, but I’m quite pleasantly surprised about how much you enjoy living there. Would love to do a little trip around Eastern Europe some day. They seem like lovely countries and lovely people. The main thing putting me off would be the language barrier - I can speak English, Irish and German, but no Russian or other eastern language. It’s great to see how well you’ve integrated though.

Hi Niall, just after finding out about your channel via bald and bankrupt's latest video. I was super-intrigued about the life of an Irish person working in post-Soviet countries. Here's the mad thing: I'm from Kilkenny and was studying in Limerick and like you I attended AUBG in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria on Erasmus! What are the chances? I found that living in Bulgaria led to me wanting to explore Slavic countries more, especially now that I've graduated, as I really enjoyed the way of life there. After watching your videos now alongside Bald's, Belarus is definitely on the list. I'll take seeing this video and the coincidences in crossed paths as a sign!

I'll tell you why I live in Belarus - I was an Irishman studying at the American University in Bulgaria obviously (because that part of the story requires no explanation).
Erasmus, it's pretty obvious tbh. It's an exchange program for european students to switch universities for a semestre or two to know other cultures. I am spanish, did mine in Ireland
My Swedish uncle, a one time seafarer who had travelled widely once told me that there are 3 things you will find wherever you go ! (1)Swedish matches . (2)Wostershire sauce. (3) The Irish . I get around a bit myself, and he's been right so far .
I'm quite surprised to hear that a guy from the West didn't mind to find a job and ended up living in the "totalitarian" Eastern European country. This is certainly not something very common. And this is not first time I hear very positive things about Belarus. I guess this is the most livable and civilized country in that part of the world. Russia should be ashamed. Well done Belarus!

@@TheButterMinecart1 That's more about the regimes rather then the lifestyle though. Anti-communist propaganda definitely did that but it's not really in western foreign policy to boast about their lifestyle anymore.
I originally planned to go to Belarus last year but coming from Russia direct required a visa for some strange reason. If I went direct from Australia, no problem. I ended up going to Ukraine via Latvia on a schengen passport visa free instead. But Belarus is still on the bucket list.
It is hard to move countries. I know this personally as I moved from the USA to Ireland in 2006. And thanks for answering my question of why would an Irishman move to Belarus.
Nice video! The visa procedure is still a big hassle though. I came with my car on a road trip circling the Baltic Sea in 2018. Needed to go to The Hague twice and have signed and printed proof of all my hotel confirmations. Booking.com confirmations were not valid. And my plan was actually to only have a hotel in the cities and camp in the wild in nature. Border was a hassle, first pay extra for personal insurance tax (only a few euros), then to the next guy, pay for the car. Because I did not know the details about my (old) car and they wanted to register everything this took Avis (but again costed me roughly 5 euros of car import tax) But managed in the end and it was worth it. ‘feels a lot like Europe’ you say. To me it felt anything but. So much cleaner than eastern (or Western Europe), big boulevards, clean apartment blocks, rural areas with small villages where time had stood still. This is by far the oddest and most interesting of European countries I’ve visited.

I lived in Minsk for 15 months studying Russian over a decade ago. Best city in the world. Now I live in Kazakhstan. I miss Belarus.

the only place worse to be unemployed than Ireland is Belarus.
So, people in Belarus live in their pleasure, moreover I am sure that who want to work, they could find a job with a high salary
In Belarus you can survive even with 200$ a month. But in Ireland you need at least 10 times more.
We actually have an unemployment tax in Belarus
is it still clean and safe outside of Minsk? Lots of places tend to have a shiny city, but ignore the rest of the country. Looks like a cool place.
