INTRO
You know how in some movies there’s a narrator who guides the audience through the story? Well, drum fills act as a percussive narrator for our musical stories. For example, when a song is about to transition into a new section, a drum fill will narrate this upcoming change to the audience, thereby creating anticipation for it. All drum fills can be grouped into three types: variation, tension, and notification. Each type of fill has a different function. In other words, they each narrate something different to the listener. Alright, now let’s jump into each type of drum fill by exploring its unique function, and how to use it in your music.
TYPE 1. VARIATION
The function of a variation drum fill is to spice up a section. An example of where you’d use this type of fill in your music, is halfway through a 16-bar verse. Whenever you have a longer section without many changes, there’s a chance of losing your listener’s attention. A fill of this type will gently bring their attention back. You can simply add a few extra notes to your drum beat, that’ll do it. Go for subtlety, and avoid big fills (those will disrupt the flow of your section). We just threw in a few snares and toms, while keeping our kick and snare pattern the same.
TYPE 2. TENSION
The function of a tension drum fill is to build up to something big. An example of where you’d use this type of fill in your music, is leading up to a bass drop (or a breakdown, in the metal genre). Whenever you want to build up the intensity to an energetic climax in your song, the best way to get there is with a fill of this type. For that reason, it needs to be big and loud! And the longer the fill lasts, the more tension it builds. These fills are often on the snare drum, but you can use anything (or everything) in your kit. Tension fills typically start with 1/4 or 1/8 notes, and build into 1/16, 1/32, or even 1/64 notes, depending on the tempo. You can use whatever note values you want, though, as long as you keep building the tension. We went with the standard approach, but made it more interesting by using toms, as well as a few 1/16 and 1/32 note triplets on the snare, at the very end of the fill.
TYPE 3. NOTIFICATION
The function of a notification drum fill is to introduce something. An example of where you’d use this type of fill in your music, is transitioning from the verse to the chorus. Whenever you want to alert the listener of an upcoming change, use this type of fill. The size and speed of your fill depends on what it’s going into. If you’re transitioning into a higher energy section, then go bigger and faster. If you’re transitioning into a lower energy section, then decrease the overall intensity with a subtler and slower fill. And if you’re transitioning into a section with a similar energy level, then find the middle path between too much intensity and too little. Also, notification fills aren’t only for transitions, you can use them anytime you want to introduce something new, like a new melody, or a new instrument. You can even use a notification fill to start a song, which is what we did in our example. Lastly, drum fills are all about setting up an expectation in the listener. Remember though, your songs are your musical stories. You decide the plot. So, feel free to set up an expectation, but then take your listener somewhere totally unexpected. For example, use a tension fill to build towards a climax, then stop in total silence. Or, use a variation fill, but then suddenly change into a completely different section.

Wow, ain’t that something: been playing for over 20 years and never had anyone explain drum fills this way. I think most drummers have a sense of these things but never put it into words. Bravo!
Of course you talk about it in terms of narrating to the listener, or audience… in a live setting, it’s just as much (if not more so) about narrating and communicating with your bandmates!

@@HackMusicTheory I studied jazz at conservatory, abandoned it to play punk rock... Now I play drums in a metal band and guitar in a surf rock band. I've also put in some time in a country band and played bass for an Elvis impersonator!

Wow I’ve basically been doing this “intuitively” but to have it explained like this really helps me to think about and use fills more “intentionally”! Many thanks as always!
Me also; my parents were professional musicians, so I picked up a lot without studying and took it for granted, so after a lot of years of making "music" that sounds like I "know" what I'm doing, I'm finally getting around to the theory. Putting together natural sounding phrases and integrating melodies sort of came "naturally", but Hack Music Theory has been turning me on to a whole lot of "ah haaaa!!!" as they uncovered the reasons for things I was doing that I never considered.

Right on Andrei, it's absolutely important to keep in mind how a real drummer would play your MIDI drums, otherwise you might end up programming something that only a three-armed drummer could play ;)

Great video. I just love percussion. It’s such an undervalued and underutilized song element.
I always try to use syncopation to make my percussion tracks more vibrant and groovy.
I think of drums just like I do other instruments with dissonance and consonance. A recognizable 4/4 pattern feels so good following a jarring polymeter especially if it lines up with the song’s hook.

Your videos always give me a fresh new perspective from which to listen and analyze music!! Coming from a Western classical theory background, this type of analysis is more practical for modern genres. Classical theory definitely helped me, but also kept me inside of its box until I realized it was only one of many ways to understand music. Thank you for sharing such valuable insights with the music community.

Great breakdown of major uses for drum fills. Nicely written fills as well. Programmed drums still don't sound quite right at those blistering speeds like the 16th triplets at the end of the tension fill, haha! Keep up the great content!

I have a little question about melodies.
I just wrote a melody and on the first bar, I wrote a 2nd, 4th and a 6th note (above muted root note of the chord). Can I write a full bar of non harmonic notes or I must write at least 1 harmonic note from the chord?

The DAW we use is called Reaper and we're big fans of the software. Hi Kate! My year's been pretty good so far, I got a guitar for Christmas and started learning! I like Reaper too, but I've never seen it look like that before 🤷♂️ plus I didn't know you could input notes with MIDI like that. That's pretty cool. The drum pack is a little expensive for me right now but maybe I can grab one of their other ones 😅 and yeah that barkdown was pretty great lol. You two do me a favor and have a fantastic day!

I also do better with more context personally as it retains my attention. Being medicated for ADHD, I do my best. But I (and I imagine likely others with my learning disability) struggle with certain volume of repetition).

So the "In the Air Tonight" famous fill is a notification fill if I understood right? Well the more you learn.
Great video and very good tutorial, dear friends! I had an idea; sing over electric bass and intend to use drums and guitar with distortion only in the unsung parts, with the clear intention of creating tension and surprise. It's not being easy and what I do during the day seems fine to me, but I think horrible (the drum parts) when I listen it the next day. Let's see if with this lesson I can overcome this difficulty. Nice that you are so active with your viewers :) I literally like all kinds of music, but mainly i hover around metal, nu metal, etc. and EDM stuff, techno, hardstyle etc. But for me it's more about the vibe and feeling than the genre.
