  • At Kopitiam, you can try traditional Malaysian dishes, and experience traditional Malaysian coffee shop culture. Kopitiam is co-owned and operated by Chef Kyo Pang, a Malaysian refugee who has taken asylum in the United States, as it is illegal to be queer in her home country. A majority of the trinkets in Kopitiam, as well as some ingredients, are from Malaysia, purchased by her family and shipped to NYC. Insider stopped by Kopitiam to taste Kyo's take on generational family recipes, and try Malaysia's national dish - spicy and savory Nasi Lemak.
    EDITOR'S NOTE: This video shows the dish, Nasi Lemak, being eaten with chopsticks, which is not how the dish is traditionally eaten. At 5:10 in this video we say that Nasi Lemak is topped with white rice. Traditionally, the dish is made with coconut milk rice.
    At 4:09 Moonlynn Tsai, former co-owner of Kopitiam says, "In Malaysia, you can still get hanged if you're LGBTQ." There aren't laws in Malaysia that state members of the LGBTQ community, or those who participate in gay or lesbian sexual activity, will be hanged or put to death. There are recent documented cases of LGBTQ discrimination in the country under Sharia Law, which applies to Muslilims in Malaysia, and which has resulted in punishment. There are also additional documented cases of extra-legal discrimination.

      @@abdullahzubair3922 well there is that whole debate for the past year or so where the government wants to enact sharia law on non-Muslim which is a complete fuckery and bullshit. Also lgbt may not be hanged but the government are ACTIVELY seeking out Lgbt ppl and putting them to JAIL.
      PLS do not downplay this shit when its real or if u are not part of the lgbt community in Malaysia. Its 2020 and honestly getting jailed for 10+ years just for being gay is JUST AS FUCKED UP and that applies to all races.

    • @bridgettedani6516
      @bridgettedani6516 4 роки тому +47

      Christopher Keroro yea but the sharia law was rejected in the parliament because Malaysia’s governing system is democratic and there is more than 1 race and religion at play here. It wasn’t the government that wanted to, it was SOME people in the government. And I have to disagree that the government is ACTIVELY looking for gays or lesbians or transgenders to put them in jail. I do know that, the approach is different if you’re a Muslim.

    Looks really appetizing and tasty.
    But had to say this, before you publish anything about a country's law, please get the fact right.
    No one has ever been hang in Malaysia for being an LGBTQ and the newspaper cuts you shown are about laws which applicable only to Muslims which the owner of the shop is not. You cannot say seeking an asylum when you're not sentence for an offence. She stated that she was afraid of people and her family judging her not from the law enforcement.
    Though there are discriminations against the community, what are not should not be overstated.
    Ps: really love this channel but please, put the agenda aside from food from it's contents. This time, it had gone beyond subliminal and become blatant advocation.
    Never in my mind for my comment to be seen as condemning any party. Though this might be too big to ask, Please, for those who are replying to this comment, refrain from making any comment about the shop owner. We are not her acquaintance, we do not know her real circumstances. So please don't make any assumption.

    This episode touches the deepest part of me and my identity. The host is Muslim, just like me. And the both owners are LGBTIQ individuals, just like me. I am from Indonesia, it's similar to Malaysia in how the society treats us as homosexual. And the story of their struggle is real, living in a muslim majority country as minority. Thank you Insider ! I hope more and more episodes have inspiring background story. ❤️🧡💜💙💚💛

      *Does the word "tiam" literally mean "spot" or "shop"?*
      I speak *Vietnamese* , where it *sounds both like* our word for *"spot"* (except we spell it as "điểm") as well as *"store/shop"* (which we spell as "tiệm").

    • @MrAntonychong
      @MrAntonychong 4 роки тому

      Actually, it's Hainanese pronunciation. It's more like "kopi-diam" with the T more softer. Maybe Vietnamese had similar sounds because of the proximity to Hainan Island.

    • @AmjaddTheGreat
      @AmjaddTheGreat 4 роки тому +4

      Indonesian here. Its said that in order to be able to go global, you need to focus on few specific dishes first. Example could be seen from Thais with Tom Yum & Viets with Pho. I understand that our countries similarly have rich culinary culture, but maybe we should push my nasi goreng & your nasi lemak to be known by the international general population first before proceeding with exporting the other 95%.
