I Made Malaysian Maggi Kari Noodles for Strangers in NYC

- Today I hit the streets of NYC’s Times Square with a bag full of Malaysia’s iconic Maggi Kari noodles to cook for total strangers. What is it like for Americans who have never eaten Malaysian food before to try Malaysian curry noodles for the first time?! They were so impressed with the flavor, check it out! (Actually afterwards one person from the video messaged me on Instagram asking where she could get the noodles she enjoyed them so much, no joke!)

hey Xiaoma, I just wanted to share my experience with you which happened over 30 years ago while I was living in NH,USA. If you're wondering what I was doing there well it was because my dad had the opportunity to further his studies and he brought along his family including me of course.
If memories served me well, I was in my 4th grade and friends from school started to notice that I was kinda different. Different in a sense of the way I look, they were always curious and guessing whether or not I was Hispanic, Asian - Chinese and even guessed if I was from Africa. I told them that I was from Malaysia and most of them were like "where's that"? I'd often find myself if I had the opportunity in class to get over to the globe which in fact in every classroom has one and pointed to where Malaysia is located. 30 years ago, Malaysia didn't really have something to showcase to little kids so I just kinds improvise and told them that well, "my country has the tallest mountain in South East Asia" and "we had real life practising Head Hunters".... LOL.
Long story short, I had a couple of friends coming over to my house to hang out at first and later left after dinner.. Thanks to my mom every time she prepared "beef rendang or chicken/beef curry" there was always extra not only for my friends but also for almost half of the neighbourhood to get a portion or more.
Here's where Maggi came in. It was on a Saturday afternoon and I had friend that hangs out at my house after he does his paper route. We'd normally play some games on my Atari and later we'd go to the woods to ride our BMX bikes together. Since I already had lunch I offered Matt - my friend if he wanted to take his lunch at my house since it was already late afternoon. I remembered asking my mother to cook us up "Maggi Kari" for Matt and I because he didn't have his lunch yet. A couple of minutes later my mother brought out 2 bowls of Maggi Kari to the picnic table because it was piping hot. For a 9 year old kid it was kinda dangerous... well that what my mother said... LOL.
Matt was kinda hesitant at first and kinda intimidated and a bit reluctant to try it out but it all changed when he had his first taste bud encounter, He was sweating like a dog and so did I. He was so amazed and thrilled with that instant noodle that he practically came every day for 2 weeks without any hesitation asking my mother if he could have Maggi Kari. I think Maggi Kari made quite an impression in his belly that he brought his mom over together. LOL. I remembered Mrs.Sanders - Matts' mother asking my mother where to buy Maggi. My mother explained that Maggi was not available in the US and that we had 2 cartons sent over from my late aunt in Malaysia.

I love all your vids! Thank you for introducing Asian culture to those who haven't experienced it yet.. it brings the world together. However, Maggie is not pronounced as mar- gi, it's pronounced as meh-gi. That's how Asians say it. Other than that, great stuff!

No Malaysians think like that, mate. Not as national noodle. However, it has become sinonymous with 2-minute fast-cooking budgetted affordable tasty noodle food menu for Malaysia n way of life. Some other fast-cooking noodle pack with different brands even got referred to as 'maggi mee'. 'Maggi' becomes not only a brand of a product, but also the general name of a food product.

True. Maggi Kari is like the one that have the lowest spiciness among all other spicy food in Malaysia. I can't imagine what happen when those who said Maggi Kari is spicy, start to eat the rest of spicy Malaysian food. It might be American thing or just a coincidence.
I used to bring Maggi Kari to UK when I was a student and a lot of English, Scottish and Irish friends of mine would said Maggi Kari's spiciness is quite mild. I guess that tolerance come from the fact that UK people like Indian food which is spicy.

I was working in the Caribbean some time back along with a few other Malaysian. Our boss who is also a Malaysian brought in a container load of Maggi for us. Despite having all the food we need, that is the time when I first experienced Malaysians fighting for instant noodles. Within minutes, the entire load of Maggi boxes was taken away. Some of us cried with joy seeing Maggi noodles as if they have won the Olympic gold medal.
Its 2019 and we got an American promoting Malaysia in NY.. we need to step up as Malaysians guys! Hahaha
