@@krazed0451 Ok, so I looked it up - So it is... never heard it before. The boys on top gear/grand tour never used it... (thats where I'm exposed to most Britishisms)
Absolutely love it! I've got two of these in various states of completeness (a yellow Hawyes one and the later black one with the less scary disc mount) that I feel morally obliged to get working now! I'd definitely love to see more of this as I love the retro stuff despite only being a young'un at 21. Keep it up Ali!
That's what trials/street trials was all about. Without too much 'tricks' and perfection of 'no hops' lines. Got some nostalgic feelings watching these lines on a legendary bike. Thanks!
When a real professional takes up the matter, it becomes clear that it doesn’t matter which bike you have. What matters is what you can do! Beautiful riding! Thanks for your work and this video, Ali!
When people are telling me that I need a better and newer bike to improve, I’m gonna show them that video and keep my old 2004 Koxx derangboy. Great riding Ali as usual, I’m sure you’d still have the level to compete elite in UCI nowadays
Back when i was young i built up a 14" Giant Boulder frame into a trials bike, complete with HS33 brakes, azonic bars, Sun Mammoth rims on hope xc hubs, topped off with some sweet specialized fat tires which were my go to back then. I had a blast, but i always wished for this frame. I loved both Hawsie and Astons bikes, they were so iconic and they were what got me into trials. But today i find myself drooling over Fabios black Inspired bike, Man i love the look of that bike.
Rad old school! Although that makes it hard for me, I can't blame my old bike for my complete lack of ability to clear obstacles ! All the work you are doing with the editing is paying off, I really like the touches like the rear wheel shot at 11:36, makes it feel like a pinkbike video
Oh man, this videos brings back so many memories. I used to love that frame, and Martyn Ashtons red Cannondale. Broke chainspotting 1-2, i played it that much. Rocking Sun rims Big Mammoths with a Tiago Factory downhill 32inch on the back with a skimpy Mavic and Tioga XC on the front. Bright yellow Magura’s ! I’m sure it was Mavic D51’s as well...tiny little child’s bmx seat. Mint ! Nice one man !
To a degree, chainstays were left longer to allow the bashguard to be used - look at old 20" bikes, where shortening the chainstays wouldn't have got the tyre in the way of anything and you'll see the same longer chainstays to get the bashguard out to be used. Deliberately using the bashguard on a modern bike is actually pretty hard because it's so tucked away, so it's all cranks and pedals. A lot of modern trials bikes, especially the competition biased ones can roll up a square corner without the bashguard touching down at all. I also really like how much quieter the v-brakes are than Magura rim brakes. Trials brakes only make noise when they're slipping and that silence means the v-brakes are locking the wheels properly. Best rim brake setup I've ever used was on a friend's bike: An Avid SD7 or 9, pulled by an XTR v-brake lever with yellow heatsink pads and CNC backings and a Nokon cable and outer on Heatsink Magura 4 bolt brake mount to v-brake adaptors. Even on a dead grind that brake would bite and hold better than a freshly set up HS33 on the same pads. I use disks now, but they're a lot more prone to damage getting sidehops wrong and I keep snapping the pulling spokes on the disk side flange of the rear hub and my rims crack at the spoke holes too (Still significantly less maintenance and better performance overall though, as I used to eat brake pads using Maguras, so lots of grinding and changing pads and setting things up to get worse overall results). I quite like the windup between the hub and the rim that puts a lot of people off disks (on 24" and bigger wheeled bikes especially) when they're used to rim brakes, as I can use it for a bit of preload.
The reason for longer chainstays back in the day was bigger chainrings. Some companies went with elevated chainstays to get super short back ends with the standard chainrings of the time.
9:58 - my 6yo son - He needs to watch out for all those nettles! 😉 And from me - On 3:56 that 180 spin with 2 wheel landing was soooo classy and unexpected - normally most of the time you are landing on front or back wheel but here it looked very nice and the spin and length of the bike was very nicely accented (if that makes sense for anyone). 😉
Awesome to watch your vids I use to have this frame back in the day brilliant little bike, as I’m nearly 40 i only do trail ridding now but I do have a 24” street trials Aston bike i seem to remember he was on that bike in mbuk mag no sure anyway it’s the loft might have to dig it back out one day and give a go.
I really liked this video the riding was great you've been to so many spots in one video and filmed from so many angles and did on every spot different stuff the variety of spots angles and riding was just awesome. Excellent video ali good job
Really great video Ali. I had one of those in the black version and I regret selling it. I'd love to see you vlog retro builds like you did on the Malvern classic vlog and what you've touched on here. Perfect for us old bods! 😂
I just watched the HKT podcast before this.. really good episode btw, thanks Ali. Not seen a Hawes edition bike for years. So cool to see you riding one. I used to see them, and red or blue cannondales on the moonrocks (you know where I mean) all the time, back in the day.
Amazed as always, well done with the retro build, thats what makes your channel so great is the variety of bikes and challenges and natural to street, and of course your easy laid back presentation style. What is with Joe Public just going about their day going past? Man I would just be blown away watching someone pulling tricks and stunts. (or do you start when they get past?)
Hey Ali Clarkson! That first side hop must be a meter! What is your side hop record and on what bike? I love the natural logs and stumps sessions you are sharing lately! Thanks! Ride ride ride!
Loving the old school bikes! I used to ride an orange zero for years, one of my favourite memories, would love to see you do one justice! If you could manage to get you hands on one...???
Awesome riding video Ali! Pretty much everyone I knew with myself included who rode trials years recognizes this iconic bike. So cool to see you bring it back to life after all these years. It would have been cool to see a few clips from "Dirty Tricks and Cunning Stunts" mixed in to give those newer to trials a little history lesson on this. Maybe in another video. 🚵👍
Love that bike and the giant team colour way Martyn and Martin were my idols I made my giant team small xc bike into a trials bike, massive toothy bash guard mainly looked similar, just love a classic yellow on a bike
You make it look so easy! That is one Cool retro bike. Although you don't like the new type of competition bikes, It would be great to see you testing one in those same places...
I always watch these videos in amazement of your bike control skills! I want to learn trials stuff, but I can't seem to control the bike better than normal MTB riding
Crazy Smooth! all the soft landings with the lower air pressure, everything looks awesome. Tubeless is great but does not have the same look as when you have a heavier rear tire with less air. Love the vids
Yo Ali, used to have one of these back in the day, I thought they were great! Was a big Hawyes too, so thought I was the man owning one Hehe. Also, used the ride the Yorkshire Tykes series way back when you did, I actually remember/recognise your face from the comp circuit, great to see you still riding! I road bikes now, but always think Id love to love to have a play around on a trials bike again! Anyways, keep up the great vids, mate :D
Its actually a really nice bike looks like it was made for trials rides like it to enjoyable to watch thanks man wen your able you should enter a comp with that bike
wow you made that frame look good ! so smooth and controled yet big ! this frame reminds me of the fun videos made by the 2 martyns ! what was the name again, " dirty and cunning tricks " ? it was awesome ! i had the VHS
This is now one of my main you tube channels. Ali is making me want to buy a trials bike again. Shame covid has doubled the price of everything pedal powered.
Ali you are a machine! Haha! Your set up on this bike really makes it seem like it has a lot of pop, i'm not sure if that's down to running lower tyre pressures than you would on your Hex or just the high rise bar and stem combo. Anyway looks like a lot of fun!
A lot of guys still use V-brakes on trials bikes, but they’re hydraulic not mechanical. Disc brakes are become more common, the thought was that you’d have more chance smashing discs on ledges etc. V-brakes are out of the way.
As someone who got into MTB in 1993 I can say it is really nice to see some old skool bikes being ridden as they should be and not hung on a wall for prosperity...well done Ali for being 1 of those people and making it entertaining for us :-) Any other plans for the bike or are you leaving it there and starting a new project/series ?
Hey ali, you should try and add some slowmotion into your videos of you doing your stuff, that would probably look so damn awesome! doesnt have to be much of it in the video, but just a little sequence here and there from your detail shots or just a move fully framed on screen in slowmo would look dope as!
I think ali is underrated
oliver cox 100% correct...
You need to get some 20" wide jeans and a Giant Team jersey like Martin wore in Chainspotting. Embrace the retro fully!
Now you’ve got the Hawyes Giant, what about an Ashton Cannondale? Great video as always
For someone who doesn't like side hops that is a stonking one to start riding a new bike with. Love it.
Stonking? Can't say I've ever heard that particular adjective before...
What's the deal with that?
Google that shit, son... It's a particularly British word ;-)

6:51, Ali, I remember meeting you in Japan in 2006 when you were there on your Ashton bike. We chatted at the bmx track sprint section!
The squeak from the rim brakes brings bike 90's trials vibes.
That's what trials/street trials was all about. Without too much 'tricks' and perfection of 'no hops' lines. Got some nostalgic feelings watching these lines on a legendary bike. Thanks!

The tyre tracks you left along the top of the fallen tree's roots could surprise someone
