I like "Rent this Space" but so happy about said space being rented, and by a company as good as TartyBikes. Love the series idea about used bikes. Keep up the great work Ali
my mates had an official martin hawyes giant frame exactly what hawzee used to ride, my mate didint ride it much tho as he didnt wanna abuse it. so he rode a monty* instead.
@@gazziboy I also had one (can't remember which number though)! Had the same old middleburn cranks with a 105 derailleur too : ) Used to watch tricks and stunts all the time! Apparently I'm old......
@@Ali_Clarkson I think this is a good move! I have a similar project! Just bought a 20" bike for £100 & will be modifying by putting BMX front end on it, hope it will ride as well as I think it will!
@@Aljonone1 Good luck with the BMX front end, hopefully it sits up high enough, as I'm sure a BMX fork is usually quite short compared to a trials specific fork.
@@Metal-Possum Well I think 20" trials will work better for me, longer top tube than BMX, but will try various forks, maybe a short travel sus fork? 24" front wheel & but lack of seat will be worked on too, a 200mm dropper post on it would me nice! just hope can get what i want with good head angle!
@@Aljonone1 As soon as you put a longer fork on a BMX, you raise the BB height and slacken the head angle. Best of luck trying it, but the end results might be horrendous.
@@Metal-Possum Yes could be! but fun experiment, that have been collecting parts to try out, would be easier with over sized head tube so could change head angle
There is a way to polish complicated shapes. Its a process where you put the metal parts into a shaker with ceramic stones. Those flatten the surface to shiny by gently hammering it. In german it's called "Hochglanzverdichten". Try finding some place that offers "Barrel Finishing" (that's the correct translation I belive). It's often used by specialized rim shops that refinish curbed car wheels
I bought my current and first trials bike for 300! Its a 2014 because simple, luckily i work in a bike shop and overtime ive made many changes to make it a better bike, new tires, brake pads, brake booster, water in my hs33, ground the rim and light tar, pedals, grips, chain, snail cams etc. Youve been an incredible inspirarion to me ans i love your videos, i love the idea of getting new people into trials!
This will be a great series! Thank you to Tartybikes for helping out with this! living in Canada it was a stretch to build up my Arcade as the exchange rate is so bad for me. Of course thanks to a curtain someone with an old frame and the help of tartybikes I got my dream build done. I think you should spray it in the copper orange colour you've wanted for a long time.
I also bought an used trial bike, last week, first ever for me. I worked on adjustments just to allow me the initiate standing on the back wheel: lifting the handlebar's extender and turning down the brakes controlers. I don't have enough strenght yet to control it and no reference to compare it to anything else thsn my regular front suspension mountain bike. But sure thing is I will change the handlebar for an incurved as soon as I can. (I found it much easier to stand on back wheel when belly is very close to touching the handlebar's pivoter). I like those of your videos which I saw yet. I'll check all of them. Thanks for them! Real inspiration and good hints on how to train.
Tartybikes is rad! I got my fourplay from them all because of your influence and showing how fun trials can be as a sport! I'm practicing as much as I can, thanks for sharing!
I would simply finish the polishing so it looks shiny silver instead of painting, its also cheaper Very nice idea for the series, will be awaiting your vids as always!
I don't know what kind of brakedisc that is, but usually the silver washer things are supposed to be on top of the calipre, not one under it and one above. The wear on the disc also confirms that.
I bought an inspired element 24inch second hand for £300 and never had to replace any parts owned it for 4 years now only went inspired because of you and Danny 👍👍
Love this video, and really looking forward to the rest in the series! Colour? I would go for metallic brown. I had no intention of buying a trials bike (although I have always liked the idea of one) but after seeing this vid, who knows!
I’m loving this Ali! Getting into trials can be really expensive especially for children. It’s awesome that you show what’s important when building on a budget. Congrats on getting that space rented 👍🏻
Army green with black forks, single rear sprocket, polish the cranks, stick the bashring in a lathe and make it smooth and more flush with the chain (I did this to mine and it looked loads better), new pedals, new tyres, better front brake, fresh grind, new chain, sorted 😊
I'm looking forward to this series. I'd think about swapping out the front disk pads for a new set and checking the inner tubes, if not swap them out too straight away. Certainly wouldn't want to ride the bike without checking them over first!
I've always held TartyBikes in great esteem - they're a 10 star operation, for sure - super helpful folks, reasonable prices, remarkably fast shipping, etc. They're now at 11!! :-)
Thanks for doing this series, I've been to intimidated to get into trials because the bikes are so different and unknown to me, hopefully this will help!
I really like this frame. I seem to remember it was easy to go over the bars, not sure if it was the geometry or if it was because I wasn't used to a high bottom bracket! Looking forward to the next video.
I just bought a Jitsie Varial 26” that is in new condition for 700 USD plus 125 for shipping. OTW to me now 😊. There are some great deals and I have noticed that they practically fly off the shelf. If it’s a choice between 1500 or 700 the used can be good, but like he says, make sure the bike isn’t beat up and get close up photos.
Hey Ali try autosol chrome and metal polish it will make the frame shiny like a trophy with nothing but a cloth and this stuff. Works a treat on some vintage bike parts and would work perfect for the bike.
Cool project! Could you sandblast the frame to keep the silver/brushed metal look, I quite like that. Also less weight :) I'd check if the brakes/chain/cranks work well, replace those if needed, to be on safe side. Look forward to see how you get on with this bike, and the new one!
Great little mini series as part of the main weekly video, very clever. Space being rented 👍 . I think polished as is with the the parts being a single matching colour.
I'd go for a matte black paint job. That way you can easily fit any colour accessory to the bike and it willl look sick no matter what. Really interested to see how this project turns out. Also, well done on renting your space. Much deserved, dude!
I bought a trex frame off Ebay. £15, with postage. Had loads of old stuff that I could put on it. So that saved money. All in spent £50. Great wee bike to get me back into it.
Damn what a nostalgic video!!!! I spent the first 7 years of my Trials career riding 2nd hand (more like 8th hand) bikes and parts. 2005 Magura hs33, echo frames, Avid bb7 ohhhh the good times!!! I can’t believe you called 45mm a high BB, my last Trials bike was a Zhi Team and it had a +70mm BB!! One of my friends had the same and he modded it to be +90! Lol. Can’t wait to see you ride this beauty!
Good buy with the Hope hubs! The conversion to 'bolt on hub' is already quite expensive. Perhaps selling some parts like the Shimano brake could give you some additional small budget. Looking forward to this series. I'm in the process of building / upgrading a second hand dirt jumper, where finding the right fork seems to be the trickiest part if you are low on a budget.
When I first got into trials I brought a second hand onza tee vee which I hated mostly the weight and geometry.. Few months later I brought a second hand onza t bird for 110 then when I got more into riding and meeting other riders I brought a second hand frame which was the onza blade for 20 pound. Its possible too get riding for cheap if you look the right places I feel
Can't wait to see you ride this bike! As for the color, I like the current look. Gotta keep the long and silver vibe from the 2000's! But if you insist on coloring it I would prefer matte black.
I got into trial through Ebay, an Onza Bird and pure luck. The previous owner had put a Magura HS33 on the rear (this started a devotion to Magura) and was running Maxxis Creepy Crawlers, 2.0 front, 2.5 rear. Within a few months I'd stuck some Trialtech cranks on, replaced the rear cog with a 12t, the front Freewheel (oh yes, I had it set up like that) with an 18t Tensile FF, a half link chain and a Clarks Exo-Skeletal disc brake up front running on a 203mm rotor. Then the bars widened to some 740mm Jitsies, up from the 680mm bars previously on there. In all I only parted with about £600. Used can be a brilliant way to get into the sport.
YES! I was hoping it was tartybikes. Somewhat related question to the video: I have a 2011 Element with the old cable v-brakes in the back. I'm looking to boost that brake for as cheap as possible. What would you recommend? Grinding? Tar? Better pads?
I have an echo cnc rear rim brake in red with blue rock pads. It was epic on my old set up... sad thing it's litrally all that's left of my trials days
Interesting subject, for me as I will be rebuilding my old Dawes Chilliwack full rigid mountain bike on 26” wheels in the next few months and I really do like the Metallic Bronze on this bike and so I would suggest you try this colour Ali, maybe I am biased but I do have a Trek FX7 in this same colour and I like it.
Nice vid! 10:33 it looks like an Avid rotor and adapter with a Shimano brake. Also the last owner set up the brake incorrectly. Those washers between the caliper and adapter don’t go there on Shimano brakes. Only Avid. So the caliper is a bit too far out and not fully grabbing the brake.
i recently decided to get back into trials, had no cash so found an old T-Pro for £30 complete ready to ride with HS33s, have since put a little bit more cash into it and its like new! Now to ride it some more!!
ali im gonna love this series and that front brake scares me a little i have magura mt7pros but a mate has them on his xc bike and the thing barely works

+1 for Cherry Red (colour of my old 2nd hand 4play) wish my mtb and road bike where the same colour it looks sick. (definitely need to get some decals on its saying "rent this space")
