What if Mr. Burton was a time-traveller who should've been in Metallica now but went to the 80s to help them get more popular and then he accidentally died back then?

The most astonishing single album leap in stylistic maturity in metal history: KEA to RTL. Incredible.
KEA was from writings made at least 3 years prior to RTL, they weren't 17 year old no more.
Cliff's classical training from one side and Kirk's Satriani lessons from another complimenting James' riff writing and Lars' vision in song structure, plus general changes in direction by the band, helped shape RTL. Meanwhile, KEA was written mainly by Dave and James, and had a more "speed-ish" vision so to speak, younger, almost childish in nature
They’re both amazing.
reasons? their new producer + Cliff asserting himself
@@mmcaart7277 So they started writing KEA songs from1980, almost 2 years before they met & formed the band, huh? Interesting....
James's voice in Fight Fire With Fire sounded nearly the same it does live now..spooky +_+

Cocaine for Lars came around 1988.
I'm impressed at how together the song structures are, very little change from demo to album. A testament to their song writing skills, even back then.
I was thinking that... Crazy how little change there was... Glad they were allowed to just develop their vision... Otherwise they might've sounded like... I don't even know what would've come out.
Of course, someone's gonna come along and say Mustaine wrote this whole demo, which has to be false, right?
Thank Kliff for that

22:29 What a badass pause. Intensify headbanging here.
I bought this album new in February 1985, which means I'm an old fucker now. Listening to this demo evokes some killer memories.
Too bad we can't stay young forever, right? \mm/
It is really not easy to understand how they made this musically mature and technical album just after (or together with) a raw album Kill'Em All in 20 age old.
Agree! What a GIANT leap, its almost a bit mysterious. The explanation must be that Cliff had more say in the songwriting on RTL than on KEA. I mean a lot of the songs on KEA was written before Cliff came in to the picture.
Kill 'em all songs probably were written way before the album was recorded, remember it was their first album, so probably there's songs written on their teenage years there
I can't understand it too. Suddenly the drumwork got larser, the voice is jamesy and the compositions reveal so important path no one know before. On the RTL things have this apocalyptic character, MOP is heavy even today when every limit is already found. And remember that at these times the other "heavy metal" bands played still the childish noise.
Mutt lange...
Was also a few years after the songs on kill em all were written, so they had all that time to write these new songs.
omfg!!!!! Creeping Death so fucking fast!!!!
MetallicaLovern81 its like the metallica through the never version :/
+Infinity Definitly not.
MetallicaLovern81 in terms of speed yes, but sound is wtf m8
+MetallicaLovern81 So fucking fast at the very beginning, as the song goes on the tempo slows down a bit
It's so fast you could almost think Dave Mustaine wrote parts of it...
holy crap..yeah it's an iphone Orion 7
Crapple sucks piles of hot corn studded shit
People forget that these songs were recorded on a shitty 4-track recorder 30+ years ago. They're demos people made in the early 80's with no money.
kingv911 also they mus have had a stereo one where you can do 2 tracks at omnce. s they must have set up 2 microphones and did it anfd the vocals are so clear
+MichaelHansenFUN You forget that they had just been robbed and all their equipment was stolen. They weren't millionaires in 1983. The robbery is what inspired Fade to Black, James was depressed and upset because their equipment was their life. So no they didn't just have all that recording equipment or most of their actual gear.
Deadpool I thought the theft was during KILL EM ALL tour
+Deadpool yeah i just heard i´m listening to a book about Lars & his journey to Metallica written by a danish writer.....i have the audio version though hint the listening
+Deadpool yea James custom marshall amp got stolen. Sad that shit happens all the time to touring bands.
FFWF sounded like James was some Scandinavian dude trying to sing in English
0:29 dog's barking
hahahaha
It was Mustaine's dog, looking for revenge.
I think I hear it crying at the beginning, maybe James is beating it?
it could be james' dog. He had a dog in the 80s
Kirk Hammetts dog tippy, poor bastard got raped by his neighbour.....
This demo is great
They were flawless before they even stepped into the studio that's the way it's supposed to be
+Cody Kramer yup
@@codykramer8834 Demos aren't just slapped together with first takes either.
@8un3zz why is he so bad in this demo?? Im a drummer myself, and he seems Like having done a great job on this demo. Well to be fair he was a great drummer in the 80s
@8un3zz don't be stupid
Definitely my favorite Metallica album of all time🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥
Is Cliff holding an iPhone?
The real question is: will it bend?
Cliff transcended time and space, yes it's a new iPhone 6. It did not survive the crash.
LOL its funny because computers were just becoming a thing in the 80s
I'm pretty sure it was a Samsung Galaxy Alpha
You just have to remember one thing............There is no spoon.
I've came full circle since my early teenage years. After listening to hundreds of metal bands and thousands of songs, I'm back to believing that Creeping Death is the greatest metal song ever written. It has everything. Killer riffs, scorching solo, epic breakdown, some of the most memorable lyrics. Watching their live show at the secret gig at the 100 club in 87' where the entire audience of die-hards are singing the lyrics just as loud as James who is thrashing the roof off..it's just epic on so many levels.
maybe because its based on a true story, its a great song
1:08 sounds like modern James
Love Lars playing here. So innovative and catchy. Normally thrash was played very stiff but this has so much swing in it. Love it.
He doesn't get enough credit for giving their early stuff swing. His dad was mates with Don Cherry so...
Listening the drum track of Fight Fire with Fire, his ride cymbal is so funky.
Very Strombringer from Deep Purple
There s a lot of Keith Moon, Paice, Ray Phillips / Pete Boot,Bill Ward ...in early Lars playing etc...
Judging by the way that statue's looking at Kirk, it's a Megadeth fan.
It's quite remarkable the jump they made as musicians in less then a year.
Gotta love UA-cam for all these ancient demos and impossible to find treasures......Thank you Marcelo !

Fight fire with fire solo... Kick ass!!!
Pure old school gold!! Thanks for the upload!! 😎😎
What a quantum leap over No Life Til Leather and Kill'em All. Some bands fall apart on their second album, but Metallica was full steam ahead.
The second album is traditionally the best. Many bands are rough around the edges on the first album, but haven't yet run out of ideas on the second.
@@thursoberwick1948 depends, there is also the phenomenon they call the sophomore slump that happens to some bands, because they had so much to wrote the first album and then run out of ideas. Metallica is an even greater exception to that considering Master of Puppets is their best album.
@@777Eliyahu I think what you call the sophomore slump is a more recent thing. The usual pattern in the seventies through nineties was a rough first album, classic second, decent third and then downhill unless they changed their style.
Iron Maiden and AC/DC's first albums are good but not their best. Same with bands as varied as Queen, Anthrax, Def Leppard, Skid Row or even the Clash got their success after their first album.
There are exceptions like the Sex Pistols.
@@777Eliyahu Well said, MoP is their best work. The sophomore slump is common because most bands have been working on the material for the first album for years or since they became musicians. The second album has to be written in a couple years and with a more hectic lifestyle with the touring and fame.
At this time, the beer had consumed James
honestly some of this demo sounds like early death/black metal
Awesome to hear this. Ride the Lightning is my favorite Metallica album, and it's interesting to see how it changed.
"So let it be written

Who else likes James long hair more? I wonder what it would look like if he grew it out again
+Sam McMullan Like he did during AJFA and The Black Album, but without the facile hair.
+Cliff Burton and grey
+Sam McMullan this is metallica not a barbie show
In my opinion, knowing the KIND of music they WERE playing in the '80s, James, WITHOUT QUESTION, looked BETTER WITH LONG HAIR! In my opinion, it made him look more "tough" or "rebellious." In my opinion, 9 times out of 10, "long hair goes well with metal music!"
Well he did grew his beard back, it just makes him look older than he already is
Cliff is holding a water game. Mastering getting that ring around the pin.
Those toys I have seen them in stores good one
James’ voice is so raw and new in this I like it a lot
This demonstrates the importance of production. The songs themselves are great but very unpolished. Remember this
I'd say it's the other way around. The songs are more important than the production since they are still incredible even with this sound...
I think the word you're looking for is arrangement not production.
JonathonTheAsshole Yes, the word I was looking for was arrangement. The arrangement or structure of a song is more important than a top notch production. A great arrangement and good production turns into gold.
ZombieHorror666 and arrangement is technically producing
That's why the music industry has producers
Downpicking speed at Creeping Death is fucking incredible
Yeah, I can barely believe it.
Oh dang the song is still going!

at that time kirk plays better than today
+Napalmdeath2000 what a surprise...
I agree. I think RTL was his peak.
Me too, Kill Em All and RTL solos i really love, ones after that, not so much. Although my favourite solo of metallica is Dyers Eve.
Brundlefly correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he was getting lessons from Joe Satriani in between Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning
TH Guitar he takes lesson only in KEA Era
What a treat
That's funny to see that the "Ride The Lightening" solo hasn't changed between the demo and the album version ^^ This solo is so perfect, nothing can replace it!
It might be Dave's, he has credit on the song, but I don't know which parts he wrote.
*****
Dave wrote the the spider chord part or the "some one help me" part
+C. Alan Robinson did you not listen to Kill Em All. Phantom Lord, Metal Militia, Jump In the fire and four horsemen. Listen to the live tapes with Dave Mustaine and tell me those aren't the same solos that kirk played on KEA.
El solo es propiedad de Kirk Hammett, la única aportación de Dave fue el spider chord es lo único, no inventen pendejadas de que el lo escribió no creo que fuera capaz de manipular la escala pentatonica tal como lo hace Kirk que medio abusa
Angryprometheus nah Kirk wrote that solo

It sounds like a Carnivore song from like 2 years later. Even the subject matter.
Venom, so criminally overlooked in the history of metal... I can see a direct correlation from Venom to Thrash but I don't hear a direct correlation from another sound to Venom... I'd love to know if someone knows.
