- "Demo Magnetic" is a set of demo recordings by Metallica done during the Death Magnetic sessions. Most of the demos have completely different lyrics and slightly different instrumentals. They were recorded sometime between 2006 and 2007, and were released as a bonus CD in the limited edition Coffin Box Set of Death Magnetic. They are the first demos to feature Robert Trujillo as the bassist.

6:54 BEST VOICE CRACK EVER LMAO
YEAH IT ACTUALLY SOUNDS GOOD
Yeah man, indeed
Autotune ;)
Yeah, reminds one scream he did in "all within my hands" (the "aaaaAAAAAHhhaaaaaa")
Well, the vocal on this entire demo reminds me of st anger.
ah, who can forget the Metallica classics "gymbag" and " flamingo"
Classics! 😆
This is proof that Metallica doesn't need a producer. Just let Metallica be Metallica. Their natural sound doesn't need to be tampered with.
exactly how they were with rasmussen :(
No Metallica doesn't need a producer they're touring now but there are going to be coming out in another new album sooner than later
Hopefully you don't have a producer on the next album
What the fuck is a natural sound
Taurus raw mate , fucking rawness.
This sounds better than the fucking album.
Hicks has spoken! Good to have you back.
cap
Damn right it does. Especially Flamingo.

I think lars' demo drum tones sound better than the mixed versions
I'm indifferent to it.
1 major factor being that this being mostly done at home or the lockouts, the traditional faith in studio gimmickery
nah, it sounds very dull on the this version
+Shallex
If you listen to the guitar hero version it's basically fine. I just prefer the tone of the DM drums, the demo tone is way too flat and it lacks punch.
This would have been one of thier best albums if the production was better.
Better drums quality on demo than on final version XD
No. Double bass has disappeared by the way
oliee0 seems they use too much clipping during mastering to make it louder. And all the drum transients take the beating the most. I would like to hear a pre master magnetic!
If you want a pre-master magnetic, look up "Death Magnetic Guitar Hero 3 Version". Since GH3 required the master tracks for certain in-game mechanics, people were able to rip the unmastered audio from the game.
Metallica released officialy remastered Death Magnetic and it's available to download on official site.
When did this happen? I'm gonna go get it.
I love how My Apocalypse was originally called Ten in the demo. They literally just got lazy and named it the number of the track lmfao xD
iRaptus Gaming or they just liked pearl jam
It’s the sequel to “One”, they just forgot 2-9
Oh, are you unforgiven two?

I guess he had actual lyrics for this demo
Those Justice demos are the BEST
Na na na nooooooo- James Hetfield, 1987, Blackened demo.
The All Nightmare Long demo is fucking awesome!! even better than the album version and I love the album version
+AW YEAH beautiful riffs right?
I agree, it actually sounds better slower.
Unforgiven III pissed me off because no horn at the beginning. Hraaaaaaaaaaa
Hopefully if there's a 4th it will have it
TURLLLICIOUS The Unforgiven IV: Finally Forgiven.
When your demos sound better than the studio album.
Amen to that
lars is all over the place here sounds like shit
The lyrics is mostly utter shit. Glad they made huge changes before the final product.
This sounds actually much better than the final release. The instruments are cleaner and not so heavily over compressed.

Yeah. First time i heard that album, i thought there where something wrong with my headphones. It reminded of the times when we taped album for each other. And some did taping far too loud. Death Magnetic sounding like that.
@@eSSEPAPIRET1 yeah, I don’t like death magnetic sound. Gives me headache. Something wrong with the tone. Sound like scratching my ears , despite such beautiful songs. That’s kinda shame for me.
I don’t know man, I actually like the guitar tone on the album, but I guess I can see what you mean about production
@ same here, loud isnt better. Overcompression cause headche due to the constant high intensity of sound pressure. It stress our brains. This demo sounds natural, with high and low intensity sections.
The vocals on Day That Never Comes are on point.
The Day That Never Comes

Autotune?
Kind of sounds like it. It's much more in key when he starts the 1st verse on the "born to push you around". The album version is a little out of key (human) I don't mind out of key vocals.
pitch correction :(
It's got that ...And Justice For All vibe.
Ikr ? I Definitely Agree With You .
Nah, you can hear the bass here

Whats this , i can actually hear the instruments over the distortion .
Its fucking crazy how the demo sounds better than the actual finished product, what the fuck were they thinking!?
ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS TO RELEASE THE DAMN DEMO, PAPA JAMES!
Nah it doesn’t, it just doesn’t hurt your ears as much
Tones, lyrics and structures are lamer here since its a demo
This sounds better, more aggressive and raw like fans needed after st anger.
If Metallica knew what was god for them they would record with Andy Sneap.
+WashingtonMonster86
So you know what`s better for them?
“Aggressive and raw” is that not exactly what St.Anger is?
Just raw in the wrong way.
no, seriously, it would have been St Anger 2.0 if they released it like this. fans would hate it
All I know about Andy Sneap is that he did the mixing on some of Nevermore's albums.

Ali Can Güzel That's Rob
@@jhamilton1007 I think it's lars. is sounds nothing like rob
Absolutely Lars!
It's kirk
it's Newsted :(
Rick Rubin still produced this fucking demo! It was done in the same studio. Rick Rubin is a great producer, it was the mastering office that fucked the mixes by PUSHING THE LIMIT OF VOLUME TO CLIPPING.
Have you seen Some Kind of Monster? How they record basically a whole album and then scrap it? That's what this is, bob was there the whole time when they did the presido demos. and Rick was here for these demos... This is more what Death Magnetic would of sounded like if it wasn't butchered through mastering....
So sick of people who have no fucking clue jumping on the "fuck rick rubin" bandwagon... The guy is a living genius, and the only reason he hasn't come out and said anything negative about the mastering of this album is because he's such a nice, peaceful guy. He has been known for pushing things loud, but not no where near as bad as DM.
Most people that work with Rick say he's barely ever there, he just shows up and then leaves and won't turn up again for ages. And the mastering engineer said that he was given the mix with the tracks already clipping, it's not metallica's fault because they weren't engineering, it wasn't the mastering engineers fault cos he was given already bad material to work with, so it's either the engineers fault for wanting to be loud as fuck, or Rick's fault for not being present enough to stop it from getting that bad.
Tom Cody weirdly enough, Greg did a fucking amazing job (with James & Lars) on Hardwired... To Self-Destruct
Tom Cody I'm late responding to this, but what i meant was amazing compared to Death Magnetic's production.
Tom Cody And yes, I definitely agree that their guitar tone isn't good at all. Like you said, the videos done in the Justice tone (and other tones) show that.
I'm very late but to my knowledge, most if not all demos are recorded in what Metallica calls The Dungeon which is Lars's basement. The Load and Reload demos 'Overload/Mucho Demo' mention this and sound like they were recorded similarly to Demo Magnetic. Not hating on Rick but I don't think he had much to do with the demos here
I love the "Always pull the joker's card" line in That Was Just Your Life!!!!!
TheMackinater Likewise. The lyrics in Unforgiven 3 were much darker and actually meant something, as well. Het’s a killer lyricist, and he needs to tell producers and the rest of the band to get fucked if they tell him a lyric is too dark or isn’t a perfect rhyme, or whatever goddamn gripe they have with it.
Agreed
all nightmare long sounds so dope
But in a good way :3 \m/
The Judas Kiss sounds good too
The main riff makes my soul dance.
*boring
at this lower speed
WashingtonMonster86 dude agreed
demo natural sound, with better dynamic range.
I love how everybody in these comments is an expert on production and sound engineering.
When the demo sounds better than the final version, you fucked up. The final version sounds compressed and blown out to shit.
It's the "feel". Is that "thing" that can't be explained with theory or technicism. Actually the whole "feel" of the demo is far more better than the album.
The final master is pure shit made just to sound loud. To achieve exagerated loud levels it is necessary to compress the sound and make everything sound at the same smashed level. You lose dynamic range and the final result is a much more distorted and umpleasant sound. 16 Bit audio has a limit loudness possible to record. If you make all the mix sound loud, the quieter parts os music sound loud and the louder ones overpass the 16 Bit capabilities and is recorded just like distortion. You are indeed losing sound information when you master it too loud. To avoid cliping and lost of audio information the engineer compress and squash everything to a stupid and completely unnatural level. The CD version of Death Magnetic is a prove of how the record labels doesn’t give a shit for audio quality.
@@philosophiaentis5612 And still it was fixed on the Guitar Hero Version months later.
damn, "german soup" for (Cyanide)...
lololololo
muh keks
Josh Farmer it sounded VERY powerful for a demo track. Especially the "Call my name" part.
Beer soup
"During the final weeks of the Third Reich and the war in Europe, many civilians, government officials and military personnel throughout Germany committed suicide. In addition to high-ranking Nazi officials like Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler, Philipp Bouhler and Martin Bormann, many others chose Selbstmord (German for "suicide", literally "Self-murder") rather than accept the defeat of Germany.[1] Studies have shown that the suicides were influenced through Nazi propaganda (reaction to the suicide of Adolf Hitler), the tenets of the Nazi Party, the anticipated reprisals following the Allied occupation of Nazi Germany, and the most important factor being the shocking experience of mass rape by Soviet soldiers. For example, in April 1945, at least 1,000 Germans killed themselves and others within 72 hours as the Red Army neared the East German town of Demmin.[2] In Berlin alone more than 7,000 suicides were reported in 1945, most of them were women.
Three distinct periods of suicides have been identified between January and May 1945 when thousands of German people took their own lives. Life Magazine reported that: "In the last days of the war the overwhelming realization of utter defeat was too much for many Germans. Stripped of the bayonets and bombast which had given them power, they could not face a reckoning with either their conquerors or their consciences."[1] German psychiatrist Erich Menninger-Lerchenthal noted the existence of "organised mass suicide on a large scale which had previously not occurred in the history of Europe [...] there are suicides which do not have anything to do with mental illness or some moral and intellectual deviance, but predominantly with the continuity of a heavy political defeat and the fear of being held responsible""
Hetfield is truly a human metrónome
James's best singing ever on the day that never comes 2nd verse. Awesome!
It's actually amazing. I've never heard his voice as soft as that
Autotune
@@GuilhermeSantos-ty7gy Autotune doesn't do what you think it does, and it's not even what you think it is. You're thinking of a pitch corrector, which every album in the last 40 years has on it. Autotune is a vocoder effect that people like T Pain use for robotic voices.
@@Just_JoshE the way i see, its you who don't know ,,,, not every album, only the fuckin main stream , VOCE É SO UM GRINGO ESTUPIDO QUE TEM O OUVIDO DE MERDA
@@Just_JoshE Not true. Autotune is a pitch correction tool that is most commonly used to subtly correct off-pitch notes. Most people don't notice it when it's used properly. The "T-Pain effect" is just that same tool on a very extreme setting, but it's the same thing.
25:04 ,for some reason game me chills.

@@frankcordova4489 nah, just called it that as a joke
They named it to create an instrumental.
This is fucking great, for me it's actually better than the album, feels naturally, feels raw, feels Metallica, even James' voice is grumpier.
53:12 holy crap the chorus on DM is soooooo much improved from this!
the lyrics for Black Squirrel are more intense than the album....."let the scars tell the story" is such a great section
The tempo change at 33:55 was so good
I think personally it was so good they just decided to make the entire song that tempo
One of the riffs in "All Nightmare Long" is also used in "Shadows of the cross" , a demo song from the "St. Anger" sessions
The lyrics sound so wrong yet weirdly good
I like that more than the album
I'm not the only one who liked this demo album more than the produced version ,right?
I love the title German Soup instead of Cyanide :D
Is that a joke or something like that? :D
I'm from Germany and I don't understand what's so funny about that. Can someone please explain it to me?
Clemens Moeller Most of the demo names are just taken from random things within the members life. Like Casper, the original riff was written in a city named Casper. It's possible that one of the members was having German Soup when they wrote the riff.
Clemens Moeller Zyklon B.
+SNGHammiam ...
James son is called Castor, not Casper...
Anyone notice that parts of 'Flamingo' are actually parts from the Presidio album?
“Shadows of the cross” to be specific
So much better than the actual record. No drum samples, no auto tune, no bullshit. Sounds natural, rather than constructed by a team of robots.
there aren’t any drum samples on DM which is why I prefer it to hardwired. the entire hardwired record was just sample replaced drums haha
This has very clear autotune haha, just check out tdtnc. Not that that's a bad thing
@@mattlovesdrums25 I never knew that, any other Hardwired facts?
My dog goes crazy at the final version of All Nightmare Long. With this one she titters a bit, but didn't go crazy at the dead stop when Hetfield comes back in. That always gets her in the final version. She loves Hetfield and reacts to many Metallica songs.
No, I am not. But from your rudeness and meanness, I think you might have a problem or two.
God why is the sound quality of the demo so much nicer than the final album? I thought Death Magnetic is already a good album, but this just made it so much better. Heavy, headbang-inducing riff from Flamingo, and goosebumps from K2LU... so good.
Drum sound is million times better here than originally!
i like these all nightmare long lyrics better. and he doesn't say "ah" every two seconds. In fact, I like Hatfield's voice on this better as a whole.
+darkstar100x Who's voice?
+pingpongpung *Hetfield's*
+darkstar100x Thank you, now my OCD is satisfied.
I find that some of the lyrics are better on this, there's just some pieces on this I like a little better. I love death magnetic as it is, and it's inspiring and fun to see how everything progressed from this and watching making magnetic. The lyrics in broken beat and scarred "dyings easy it's living that's hard" I find much better than "what don't kill ya make ya more strong" but that's just my thoughts! :)
Jeans Hatfield, the frontman of Mittenica
the demo album is SOOOOOO much better!!!
James sounds so much more confident on this than the actual release. Still my favorite Metallica record though \m/
Holy crap this sounds better than the album. That bass tone is absolutely killer. Thick and heavy.
if all nightmare long was the same in the album metallica now will have an heavy-as-fuck-mid-tempo to play live .
and also in this demo guitar are so heavy , so powerfull ..what append in production ?
That original riff from 29:54 fucking makes you move. This speed slays the version of the riff on the studio version.
What I don't get is why they can't just reproduce the original recordings? :s But I guess they were dumb enough to not save them??? :s May as well re-record it though.
actually don't know why they do it .
sometimes metallica create masterpiece , sometimes the get lost in the ideas sea and create a bug pile of fecal matter , just like st.anger .
if you cut every st anger song making them last 3 or 4 minutes , using a classical verse-chorus-verse-STOP you gat a nice album .
wont the proof ? listen to st anger itself, stop at 4.50
Dm is such a great album. Even the demo is fantastic
Beyond Magnetic is amazing too.
This actual captures the real rawness of Metallica’s energy. Love it.
are they mad? All Nightmare long is so much better. What a kick ass groove the demo had.
yeah, realy good !
32:43 The bridge just before the chorus sounds fantastic with the vocal harmonies (and so much smoother).
Solo is way better
Had much of a darker feel
i hate the demo version, cause of the climax and weird riffs and the tempo, my favorite metallica song Is all nightmre long, not flamingo
All Nightmare Long forever..
Vocals on the chorus of Casper is the best vocal of Hetfield for last 15 years.
Easily
this album sounds even more eerie than the release. the weirs named also make it even uncannier.
I love Lars' drumming on this album
1:10:49 one of the best riffs
James's vocal on UN3 is wonderful, and whole demo at all
Back vocals are real good on the demo. Nice to ear that
23:44 my god... so gently and sweet i cant... im crying
the main riff in Cyanide actually sounds how it was supposed to, creepy and brooding, and I love it
This whole album feels alot more real. I feel the lyrics when James is signing, especially in Black squirrel (Broken) and Casper (The Day). Rather then on the album, it feels as if he was just reading lyrics on a page... And i agree with everyone who says "Flamingo" has more groove than All nightmare long...so true.. And he should of kept some vocal harmonies in the album, it always adds to the dynamics of the song. One vocal line is alright when it is strong enough to stand on its own. I'm not a big fan of the black album, but the harmonies were great on that record.
+Sébastien Major I think I'm going to incorporate your idea into the music I make. I've never viewed myself as a strong singer. I really should just go crazy with the harmonies like Alice in Chains did. AiC is at the top 3 of my most favorite bands, and so this idea is very sensible.
Thanks for inadvertently giving me a great idea!
Hey no problem ! Alice in Chains is one of my biggest influences when it comes to Vocal harmonies. I also enjoy the harmonies on the last two System of a Down records. It's always in the pocket.
The sound of the guitar are better than on the album version!
27:09 Dude, I love that bass line..
James' voice on The Day That Never Comes in this version sounds great, really soft in the verse and heavy in the chorus.
For those lousy idiots commenting SO much better than the album!, I'm guessing that if they had released this version in place of the album and the current album as a demo, your comment would be the same.
there are people who likes st anger as i do. and we're not idiots. when i listen to demo DM, i feel influence of st anger on it. so demo DM is so dope for me.
yeah i like st. anger it's not my favorite but it's honestly not that bad
you have your opinion, that's it ;
for me, this demo sound better, roots ;
drum sound is better, warmer guitar sound is better, singing is more relaxe.....what more do you need ?
If this were the final version, people would complain that it sounds like a demo, but compared to the actual release, it sounds superior insofar as the instruments have greater acoustic space and therefore it sounds more real, raw and pleasant to the ear.
st anger is best metallica
Las voces en "The day that never comes" son increibles.
Adrián Romero A pesar del exceso de post producción (correcciones en las notas), la manera de cantar es muuucho mejor que la versión final
The background vocalizations on cyanide sound so cool.
Groovy.
I'm loving the absence of over-compression
This sounds so much better than the regular release!
Damn good thing they really fixed those lyrics! lol
Hi guy really shows the true metallica. the amount of yeahs say so. YEAHTALLICA
If someone told me this was released right before the black album I would have believed it. This version of death magnetic sounds like a thrashier ease into the black album.
all nightmare long sound so... scary... I like it
The main riff of all nightmare long sounds so much better on the demo.
Domenick boucher Check "Shadows of the cross" by Metallica. Its an unreleased demo song from St Anger. it's where that riff came from, the exact same as played in this demo :]
Holy Crap is that Rob's vocals on My Apocalypse? It actually sounds kinda good. Wonder why they didn't keep it
lars
Long live shadows of the cross (all nightmare long). The only Metallica demo to not be completely thrown away after not making the record.
all nightmare long demo + current lyrics of this song = this would be something epic
Loved this album. Total banger
The intensity of the vocals; the melody of the strings; I want to steal Metallica away fromo Big Production.
How much greatness have we lost to fallacious production?

from 34:00 to 35:00 = REAL Metallica sound. Could be on Justice for all album
And 35:00 to 36:30
Alot of stuff from this record could be but people hate it because it came out in 2008 instead of 1988.

Should have been released this way! I ACTUALLY enjoyed listening to this. I did however enjoy the guitar solo for The Unforgiven III album release MUCH better than this one.

i'm still wondering why they didn't put shadows of the cross (demo of all nightmare) on st. anger. or temptation, THESE TWO WERE FREAKIN BADASS ON THE DEMO
Another case where the production killed the album
Probably the most notorious, too. Care to elaborate about other such albums?
I like the final cut better, this is way to raw
It didn’t necessarily kill it, but the production by no means is good
Симеон Валентинов the final cut is 99% peaked audio
it really annoys me when people are shitting on death magnetic simply because its a brilliant album. i feel the people bitching about this albums production are music snobs. besides isnt metal meant to be loud?
Casper > The Day That Never Comes
Right from the fucking get go, as soon as the Hetfield vox comes......the song is so ALIVE. Highlighting how modern recording/mixing can take the life out of a bands sound. You can hear the fire within the performance.
Are there beyond magnetic demos somewhere?
What a juicy sound, Death Magnetic deserves a remix more than AJFA!
Vocals on day that never comes are amazing. Whoever works with Metallica doesn’t know how to capture this spirit and essence. Sad.
This version of “all nightmare long” should have been in the actual album. So heavy and awesome.
These songs sound like in-between stress relief from making the big ones.
I love this because it sounds like Metallica just hit record and played the songs live. They are a great live band.
I like this all nightmare long, but i wished they used the riff from when rob was playing it on the guitar in the making of death magnetic video
that riff was savage. they didn't use it at all?
No unfortunately :/
The low tuning and sound of the guitars, plus James voice give this St Anger vibes
