Live at Metal Hammer Festival - Loreley-Freilichtbühne, St. Goarshausen, West Germany [14.09.1985]
Imagine James says “you want to hear a new song?” Then they play Disposable Heroes…mind blown.
I don’t know if they were recording “Master of Puppets” around that time, but from what I know about their history, Metallica would provide sneak previews for a song that would appear in a future album.
It’s like when you put Master of Puppets on for the first time and that riff after the intro to Battery starts and your brain just melts. I was born in the 80s so I can only imagine what it was like for that to be a brand new, never done before sound.
Six months before the rest of us, lucky dogs!
So glad I got to see them on the next!
Also refering to No Remorse as ”an old one” in 1985 :)
“This one’s coming out round Christmas time!” What a fucking treat that was man hahaha
54:45 YAHHHHH !!! *disappears*
One hour into school: 😔😡🙄🥱
One hour into metal hammer festival video: 😜😁😎😲
literally
Yeah, school classes are like "wtf I don't wanna be here", and metal shows are like "ALRIGHT! 🎶".
Cliff Burton was an alien with them fingers. He was like I’ll show you earthlings how to play this thing you call bass guitar 🎸
Cliff like Percy Jones ; Alain Caron (UZEB band) play with 3 fingers on right hand
@@pierrepicot3706 Also Geezer Butler
Lars killing there. This drum sound and this double bass is amazing
Cocaine power
@@laloopaja997Fuck Yeah!
I honestly don't understand why people seem to give Lars shit. He's a great drummer, especially in Metallica's prime he was.
@@rodbelding9523 some people are not very musically me minded and don't understand the concept that is only playing for what the songs need instead of overplaying everything as if they're competing against their own band mates, but yes, Lars was always the perfect drummer for this band.

one of the most surprisingly balanced pro shot videos i’ve ever seen. they had no idea how important high quality cliff footage would be 40 years down the line.
Camera man should've zoomed in on James less and pan out to catch as much Cliff as possible just on personality alone.
@sanpakupaco then again the cameraman didn't know that cliff would be dead in a year from then
@@OhioOutdoorWarningSirens agreed
Cliff looks like from another time and space. also his charism and feel for play.. well its clear why he is irreplaceable.
@@sk8taway Why wouldn't the cameraman focus mostly on the frontman? Especially back then
The cameraman in the pit hadn't figured out that lead guitarists existed until after this obviously due to the fact he zoomed in on James hetfield's guitar when the solo to Creeping Death was playing LOL
disposable heroes is such an underrated song
Personally I think it's one of their heaviest songs they ever wrote. Actually one of the heaviest metal songs of all time.
I don't care. I listen music for my own good and don't give a thing what other people think.
Agreed. Easily the best MoP song

James' cut off baseball 3/4 sleeve "Metal up your ass" T would be worth 100k if it still existed.
Lars probably still has it 😂

R.I.P. CLIFF BURTON 🔥🤟💀🤘🔥wearing an original MISFITS t-shirt.
Actually, not an "original" shirt. They would actually have the silk screen frames that they bring with them. They would make up the shirts as they sold them even at the shows. They would stick a plain T-shirt in there, and you basically get it wet. So basically they were handmade. He's wearing one of the mass-produced ones that came later on. During this time you can also see them wearing Samhain shirts which were mass-produced also. They didn't originally have the giant crimson ghost skull on t-shirts back in the day.
@@pete5397 Cool. Thanks. The old days were all DIY.
RIP Cliff, amazing footage 🤘🏽🤘🏽
I remember seeing METALLICA open up for OZZY blew me away and i was hooked. I am fortunate to see Cliff on that bill. I love old METALLICA 👹🤘🤘
In my opinion, the old Metallica will NEVER, EVER, be surpassed!
I got to see Metallica opening for Ozzy at The Spectrum in Philly in April of ‘86. I went to see my metal icon, but after seeing Metallica for the first time, it left me with such emotion that I couldn’t explain it. A 13 year old headbanger who became a Metallica disciple for life.
1985 to 1990 is peak speed Lars. 1991, the celebrity coke binges kick in after success from the black album.
19:08 Dear lord. That's Cliff yelling "HEEELLLLLL!!"
Pure fucking magic! They were untouchable during the first three alums! Those albums will always be simply amazing!!
Please save this epic concert for our future generations, I hope youg people from the year 2100 and so on, can watch this concert.
The human race will be extinct by 2080
Tell 'em that THIS, THIS, IS METALLICA!
I was there 🤘 Good old Times. It was in St.Goarshausen ,Loreley in Germany.. A fucking Great Concert!! Rip Cliff Burton 🤘🤘
Best show with cliff?
29:10 legend right here on bass guitar, him and Lemmy from Motörhead. They are my influences to learning bass guitar. I dream of making my own band, I wanna call us the death jackets. But I don’t know if that’s gonna happen but I wanted to be the bassist and singer and be as wild as this legend right here.
Find peace and play for us loud in Heaven, Cliff Burton. Legend gone too soon.
Nome legal, te desejo sorte. Abraço de um irmão baixista do Brasil.
Don't tell people the name of your (future) band. Some lame ass poser will steal it!
they are influences for guitar !
OMFG... Metallica hit another level when Cliff on bass.
I miss him so much 😢
I can't imagine if he still around metallica in this years.
It would be phenomenal.
👍
this is pure gold!
I’m so jealous of the people that got to see prime Metallica.
This is just absolutely amazing!
In all my years watching this concert on youtube...
I never thought one day I would be able to see it like this.
Well Done MTVisual Aggression
WELLLLL...FCKNGGG...DONE!!!
Great!! This concert happened only 20 Kilometers from my hometown at that time. But I was too young to see it. It’s legend.
Super LARSayan transformation 21:08
I was there and remember after the show the most of the crowd went back to their tents to party! They have seen the real headliner!

They sound castrated.

My favorite Metallica live
If u put this over quebec 86 u trippin balls
@@NYSLLeo I prefer gothenburg 87
I always get goosebumps when I hear them play ⚡Ride The Lightning ⚡ live. 💪💀🤟 It's my favorite album of theirs. I was just a little kid learning how to skate when I first heard this. Nothing like drawing skulls on your ripped jeans and the Metallica logo and the Slayer logo, Sepultura, Exodus, Sodom. Now it's my kids that wear the ripped jeans and draw on everything. Metallica's Ride The Lightning, Sepultura's Schizophrenia, and Destruction's Release From Agony are the best creepy, cold, erie, thrash albums. You made my day. Thank you.
Killer selection of old school neck wrenching bangers!
Finally someone acknowledging Release From Agony. The best Thrash to me is when it’s dark, energetic and epic like MoP and RFA. I like to say that RFA is teutonic Thrash’s MoP
Rtl probably has one of the best guitar tones in thrash metal history.
You forgot Beneath the remains album. That's trash metal album
If we could travel back in time and warn them from that horrible bus accident.
Of course.
The repercussions of the butterfly would affect Dave somehow
Lars was about to get fired, once Master of puppets tour was done, they give him another chance because of the lost of Cliff!!
@@pablogutierrez3137That's just rumours to be honest Kirk debunked that
Flotsam and Jetsom would have become a much bigger band.
Honestly I love this James young voice better than when it changed in AJFA album
The young james voice wasn't totally gone in the the justice album, but it was phazing out
@@Idontwantayoutubehandle.yea true it still sounded same but the voice became more manly
lars is killing it here!!
Oh wow! that is great upscaling
Great vid! I saw them for the first time live begin 1987 at Aardschok Netherlands and was completely blown away by the power, energy and tighness of the band. By far better than all other bands that day. Unfortunately I’ve never seen Cliff live. He was sacrified a few months earlyer. Check out James’ illuminati tattoos.
I wasn't there. Best show I've never seen
2:22 holy shit James is alternate picking Creeping Death… in 1985!!! i never want to hear shit from anyone again about alternate picking at least part of a Metallica song that is known for downstrokes
Hahaha conserving energy
He hits a lot of the big chords with up strokes.
13:25 When the wall of guitars unlike anything you've ever heard before drops.
La leyenda Cliff demostrando cómo se toca el bajo.
Todo este concierto es de lo mejor !
Old school! Love it! Cliff Burton RIP
Cliff at the end, "See you next year." 😔
That time they really sounded like thunder
The real four horseman!
This is the first time I've seen Cliff Burton perform Creeping Death
You can also see him do that during the "Day On The Green" show the same year.
thanks so many times...
Fucking hilarious that I got a CLIF bar advertisement right before Cliff's bass solo!!😂😂😂
This by far the best the performance of fade to black
Ride the lightning is one of their songs and what a performance this one is
To me this is Metallica in their prime. Just before they got seriously huge. This shit is amazing and will be played forever for generations. RIP Cliff. A true Legend, Still sorely missed in 2024!!
Ein, zwei, drei, vier before Whiplash. Genial!
still remember first time hearing "Hit the ligts" which was my first meetin with tallica ... coming from accept and saxon and the likes ... also of course iron maiden.. i still love iron maiden :)
But after Hit the lights... i was lost in metallica :).... then came ride the lightning... couldt wait to hear it... startin with " fight fire fire with fire "
... whow and just like that metal was a whole new game....about 1 year later came MOP ... and again .. opening song "Battery" blow the mind of my few metal friends and me... again they changed metal into somthing even better ....it was a GREAT time in the history of music
and in the ears of 99,9 % of all ppl it was just noise..... but it turned out that metallice would end up being the greatest metqal/rock .. or just " band" of all time :)
James is a beast on this show! The real Headbanger!!!
with this energy you can fight the devil!
I could watch footage of Cliff headbanging completely muted and still enjoy it
Amazing concert 🌟
So young and so good, Real talent
" For whom the bell tolls, my Favourite is here so Powerfull, a Little Master Piece 🥂🎶
Holy shit
Lorelei/Goarshaven! Venom came on last, but this set! After a full day of metal this was electric! Best part of being in the US Army in West Germany. Great concerts and great people! German metalheads are the BEST!
Edit- Saw Metallica, with Tank opening up, at the Mainz Ratskellar the year before. It was awesome to see them co-headlining this festival!
1:01:03 - SLAYER!!!
Cliff!🕊️💌
kirk is so good
So Sick!
At 1.11.16 james' scream sounds like a black metal scream. Intense
It’s crazy to think how much their stage presence changed from this video and just a few years later.
A mediados de los años 80 metallica dominaba al mundo
1:14:46 🧍♂️cliff be like
Thank to let "Fight fight with fire" begin
Brutal!
In Cliff ‘Em All I remember the editing was kind of random so I’ve seeing the complete performances. Fucking amazing quality. I’ve been trying to find a high quality video of Randy Rhoads with Ozzy.
That bass bro 👌
James voice at his best. Crazy
is this the real speed? is insane
Go watch the gothenburg 87 show, lol
The Best... The End...
Young James voice 😮❤
19:12 when he found his voice and a new era begun

When did Kirk acquire the Rhoads Jackson?
It seems Vinnie Vincent’s may have one of the first production models, but I’ve wondered about Hammet’s.
My first Metallica Concert…….I saw Cliff and heard a new Song live…… what else to say
their peak?
@@Liviopedata for me, absolutely yes
Can you imagine being at these shows knowing that in a few short years, unfortunately Cliff would be dead, and Metallica would be one of the biggest bands in metal history. I always wondered if Cliff had lived, what direction Metallica would go.
You all have to keep perspective on the Cliff worship. Yes, his bass play is amazing. He probably was the coolest dude in the band who wasn't even trying to be. However, can you imagine if James had been the one who died on that bus? He would have been the most posthumously celebrated metal genius ever. "What would James have done if he didn't die after Puppets?" people would say. You wouldn't have had Justice or Black album for sure. I think Justice and Black would have been similar if Cliff lived (esp Justice). Just some thoughts
O… my.. goodness…
He didn't downpick that fast part in creeping death?!
Without pre-Black Metallica post-Black Metallica doesn't exist.
Cliff!!!

1:12:08 that “yeah” sounded like 1991 James
Cliff Burton una bestia
