Zoloft (Sertraline): What are the Side Effects? Watch Before You Start!

- Get a doctors perspective on the medication Zoloft or Sertraline. Is it right for you? What side effects should you look out for? Learn about what conditions it works for including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD and severe form of PMS call PMDD. Learn how this medication can play a role in treating these conditions and some common as well as some rare side effects that can happen.
Zoloft (Sertraline) is in the family of medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI). They influence the amount of Serotonin that is available to help with mood and other functions of the body.
With depression you tend to have symptoms like difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions. Fatigue, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness. People experience sleeping problems, mood swings, a loss of interest in things that you once enjoyed, appetite changes, generalized pain, persistent sad or empty feelings and even suicidal thoughts or attempts.
Those who are going through anxiety you may have symptoms such as sudden and unexplained onset of a rapid heart rate, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, pain in your chest, fear of dying, numbness and tingling throughout your body or just a generalized feeling of anxiousness all the time that you just can’t explain.
If you are experiencing these symptoms you need to seek help from a professional. Go see your doctor and get an accurate diagnosis to figure out a good treatment plan for you. Remember depression and anxiety are real medical conditions and should be treated just as diabetes or high blood pressure need to be treated. You shouldn’t feel any different treating any one of these medical conditions.
We'll give a good overview in the video of the common side effects but its important to remember that most side effects if any are transient and can be minimized by working with your doctor. We will discuss more concerning side effects such as serotonin syndrome as well.

Robert Crotone Hi Robert, it is common for most side affects of sertraline to decrease after two weeks. I believe that he needs to speak to his doctor about the medication he is using and see if there is a better alternative. It is very important that young people with depression are supported whilst taking anti-depressants as it can make their symptoms worse in some cases. Best of luck
@@blakemorton1394 hi there thanks for your advice. is it possible my son could go through this severe side effect then come out of this and start to feel better. after a few more weeks
@@robertcrotone2430It is true that some people take longer than others to notice the positive effects. However, feeling suicidal in any way should be taken very seriously and shouldn't be seen as something your son needs to go through. Hi! I’m a 21 year old Italian girl andI’ve been taking Zoloft (50 mg) for three months now. I suffered from severe depression, anxiety and binge eating.
I constantly isolated myself from people and my life was a nightmare so I finally dedicate to take this medication.
I feel so much better and I’m socialising a lot more than before. I feel like I’m living my life.
I surprisingly lost a lot of weight, maybe because I stopped binging all day.

Personally, it feels like a mental fire blanket that neutralizes dark waves. I actually feel it working, bringing the light back.
Zoloft changed my life for the better, greatly. I’m about a year in. The only thing is things seem too good, almost.. then adding COVID lockdowns and the weird way schools are operating, it’s a little surreal. But I’m doing good because I’m doing good, mentally, and it’s showing in my life. I didn’t even understand how depressed I was before. I thought enjoying the moment was for children, and as you got older you enjoy things in the moment less and less until it’s only the memory that brings joy, because of all the stress that’s in the now. Sertraline changed all that. I’m happy, just a little paranoid.
Has it affected your libido

I think you take the meds and taking not allowed drinks that's why
After a lifetime of trying meds to help these feelings of depression and hopelessness, the most shocking discovery was that stopping processed foods, wheat, and sugar and cutting almost all carbs from what I eat had more effect than any of the meds they ever suggested I try. The gut-brain connection is much stronger than modern medicine knows yet, and eating trash makes you go around inflamed, and some new science suggests depression could be a disorder caused by inflammation. That's just my two cents, I have nothing to sell, and it's something I wish I'd known much sooner, and also no medical doctor will *ever* seriously suggest anything like that, in my experience.

Denise, Combine medication with meditation. Heal yourself. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10 minutes or more. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free in the day or night sit still for 1 or 2 minutes and observe your breath. Make it a habit. Do the above meditation daily to feel relaxed. Positive affirmations for 5-10 minutes before sleep also gives quick relief. Best wishes. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Day 4 on it, started on 50mg first two days. I felt so lifeless and somewhat anxious. Appetite is the same not really there and nauseous. I woke up with a pretty terrible panic attacks after finally falling asleep. I felt so strung out. Went down to 25mg on the third day and I have more energy, but I think it makes me sleepy. Still a little anxious but still feeling depressed. I’m hoping this works for me. Impatiently waiting for those good effects to kick in but here’s to hoping…

Did you're stomach hurt with this ?
My first week on this meds, got a hella nausea brooooo!
Great video and very informative! I have been taking Sertraline for about 2 years now and I feel great. Suffering from long year recurrent depressive disorder and massive panic attacks daily, doctors first could not figure out what was wrong. Finally Sertralin was the med which helped within 2 or 3 weeks.
I am able to work again and enjoy life with my family. My current psychiatrist advises me to continue the medication to prevent a relapse. First I was sceptical, because the moment you feel better you typically think, you do not need it any longer. But statistics say, there is a high risk of relapse if you stop too soon or refuse to take your meds regularly.
It's important to take it daily and follow your doctor's advice. I never had any side effects.
Sertraline clearly helped me regain my strength.. Sometimes it takes time to find your individual med which helps. Sertraline was mine.
Stay safe and well!
@Route-66 barefoot You will be fine! Stay safe and enjoy 2022
I started taking 25mg daily for about 4 weeks now , I had previous panic attacks where I felt I was going to die . Thankfully I listened to my Dr and started to take setraline . @@spencercapencer I've had my better days and some worse days. I find that the main thing I notice is that my good moments feel like just that. Then my bad moments just make me feel numb, like I dont or can't do anything. But then there are still days where my anxiety level is high. As of yet biggest thing I have noticed is I have next to no sexual interest. But that can also be caused by stress alone, can't really blame that on the medication completely.

As a side note the sexual dysfunction so far has been mild if not really existent. Not to bring that to the forefront. But so far so good actually. Amazing how many people out there who are looking out for each other.
Setraline saved my life but it does come with some side affects. My vision was slightly blurred the entire time I was on it. I made weird noises in my sleep involuntarily, I sweat...A LOT in my sleep and I had virtually no seggs drive. I felt nothing, like a zombie, but I was in such a mental crisis, it's exactly what I needed, to feel nothing!! I had to stop abruptly but I didn't have any weird side affects. Psychedelic’s definitely have potential to deal with mental health symptoms like anxiety and depression, I would like to try them again but it’s just so hard to source here
Psychedelics are the reason why i didn’t take my life when i was at my end. I was stripped of my ego and saw the beauty of life and interconnectivity and even though i still battle anxiety and depression, I’m doing better everyday and will never think in such a self destructive way again.
LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life. I became a better version of myself
This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. interesting. I read in medical news today on the web that anti depressants raise risk of death by 33%.... thats alarming. And risk of stroke or heart issues. I'm on fence. "The analysis found that in the general population, those taking antidepressants had a 33 percent higher risk of dying prematurely than people who were not taking the drugs. Additionally, antidepressant users were 14 percent more likely to have an adverse cardiovascular event, such as a stroke or a heart attack"

Does Zoloft cause weight gain?
I haven't seen that it in and of itself causes weight gain. What I do find is that when it helps with depression if you are a depressed eater then sometimes you loose weight or if you don't have an appetite due to your depression then you may start eating more and may gain weight from that.

Zoloft did wonders for my PTSD but I didn’t like the extra 55 pounds I put on and it also killed my sex drive. After three years I replaced my Zoloft with a 800 calorie workout daily.
Did you sur I've on 800 cal diet? If nit hope you went to heaven and find happiness 😅
Im only 13 and i have all four that you showed in the thumbnail and my dad got me this type of medicine from the docter... i have to go to public highschool this sept. Lets see guys
You have explained it the best possible way .. been on Zoloft for over a decade with short breaks .. as a maintenance dose I kept it for some years at 50mg while tapering off with 25mg, and after every other day for a total 3 month time before I stop it .. after being on keto diet for 2 months I believed I could forget Zoloft and live without it being happy again ..
I was told Ketosis fixes the mitochondria in the brain in order to produce serotonin by themselves after a period of time … I had a relapse and felt sad all the time , no energy at all to get off the bed , and quit my job (after 2 months off Zoloft ) .. Doc is that the sertraline levels I had achieved all these years under medication that kept me active those 2 months without the medicine or the keto diet? It was hard and I was crying all day that I had to start again the Zoloft at 50 mg daily dose to feel normal again .. because you said 2 months without a SSRI will indicate you if it’s the time to stop 🛑 it 😢. Well I guess I failed 😣… I will never be able to live without the small dose of Zoloft … if only you could help me. What’s your opinion ?
God Bless 🙏🏽

You're right. I'm near day 3 and I'm thinking I made a mistake but I don't want to give up I want to see if there's a difference the after 6 weeks. But these side effects are so bad for me I'm nearly trying to convince myself there was nothing wrong with me so I can justify coming off them 😥
Zoloft was the most effective antidepressant I ever went on. It reduced depression and anxiety significantly. It doesn't solve the problem entirely. I don't know if I have side effects from it or not. I have various symptoms and health problems but I don't know what causes them. I think it also makes me cooler and more rational. Some friends hated their experience on Zoloft because they didn't have as intense emotions.
I started taking Sertraline for OCD (as well as receiving weekly therapy for the past month and the foreseeable future) a week ago. I'm hoping it ends up working and makes my symptoms less severe.
I’ve been taking this for almost 2 weeks now. I’ve been feeling much better and feeling less anxious but I’ve been feeling more hungry. After a hour of eating, I felt very hungry again. When I eat I don’t feel full. My appetite has increased tremendously. Is this normal?
Not a common complaint, watch your carb intake as that can make things worse. review it with your doctor.
This is happening to me, I’m only on day 6 and today I felt sick all day so haven’t eaten much, but the first 5 days after about an hour after eating it’s like I’m suddenly starving! I feel like I can’t eat much in each sitting though as I’ll feel a bit sick but I don’t feel full. It’s quite strange
If you love yourself just a little DO NOT TAKE SERTALINE
Can you take probiotics and a multivitamin with this medicine?
Usually things like that are fine to take but I can't give you specific advice in your situation. That's a great question to run by your doctor or pharmacist. Thanks for watching!
my doctor prescribed this and idk if i wanna take it. i’m scared that I will feel dependent on this medication if it starts working for me which i don’t really want. i don’t want to get addicted to it if that’s even possible. bc i’ve heard that some people get addicted to some medication. maybe i’m overthinking this. but i do want to start feeling better and stop letting my anxiety consume me everyday.
I was the exact same way. I was so scared to take a medicine to feel “normal” and was also scared to get addicted to it. I started taking this medication on Monday and it takes 2-4 weeks to start seeing results. I have general anxiety disorder and overthink and worry about every little thing, my triggers are intrusive thoughts. But If all it takes is one pill every day to make you feel better, why wouldn’t you take it? It’s part of life and some of us need more help than others. Taking medicine doesn’t mean your “weak” or “going crazy”. Best of luck!
I just picked it up for my 16 year old daughter for her anxiety I hope this works.🙏
NOOOOOOOO please dont drug your teenage daughter at such a young age. These drugs arent safe as lead to believe.
The good doctor is very tactful, allow me to be more blunt: Zoloft makes it impossible to achieve orgasm, no matter how hard you try. This side effect does not go away with time. Not being able to enjoy sex will make your depression worse.
