If there is no ruler who rules according to sharee’ah then it is not permissible for the ordinary people to carry out the punishments. Whoever does that is sinning, because carrying out the hudud punishments requires examining the matter and requires shar’i knowledge in order to know the conditions of proof.
The ordinary people have no knowledge of such things, and the carrying out of one of the punishments by the ordinary people leads to many evils and the loss of security, whereby people will attack one another and klllll one another or chop off one another’s hands on the grounds that they are carrying out punishments.

The mission of Jesus was confined to the Israelites alone. It is unfair to think that his teachings are for all mankind or that they are practicable in this age. Jesus expressly stated:
“I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel”. (Matthew 15:24)
It may be said that he asked his disciples to teach all nations:
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost”. (Matthew 28:19)
The repeated injunctions of Jesus, however, manifestly oppose this view. In the light of such unequivocal teachings of Jesus as in Matthew 15:24, one may safely assert that the words “teach all nations” are either mistranslated or misinterpreted. They might perhaps mean that the disciples of Jesus should go to all the tribes of Israelites. The word “nation” may readily be taken as an equivalent of “tribe” in view of the testimony which the Bible itself provides.
For example, the following verses show that the mission of the disciples of Jesus was restricted to the tribes of Israelites:
“Verily I say unto you, that ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel”. (Matthew 19:28)

The apostles were disturbed and annoyed when they learned that Peter, on one occasion, had preached to non-Israelites. “And when Peter was come to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, saying, Thou wentest into men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them”. (Acts 11:2-3)
Thus, the express injunctions of Jesus make it obvious that he was concerned only with Israelites.

How about a complete layman with no pedigree spreading misinformation and lies about our religion, causing non-muslims who know no better to hate Islam because of things we don’t even preach. Why is someone like Rushdie being used as an authority on Islam instead of muslim scholars? Criticizing an ideology from a neutral standpoint is ok, but spreading lies and painting a religion in red because you hate it then labelling it as criticism is wrong. Like MH said, we don’t condone the stabbing, however, no matter which religion or ideology it is, there are the violent ones who are likely to attack you for ridiculing their beliefs, even if it goes against what is preached. Although they are a minority, the haters of Islam will cleverly zoom in on this event and conflate it with Islam. If this was truly Islamic, why didn’t every muslim who met Rushdie attempt to kill him? How many people who have insulted Islam still live without being killed by every single muslim in their vicinity? Why is it this one incident that is concentrated on?
In short, if you wish to put Islam under scrutiny with an open mind, there is nothing wrong with that, and you will come to see its truthfulness and beauty, but we cannot tolerate someone spreading misinformation about our religion under the guise of scrutiny.

Rather the solution is to respond to Rushdie's work with debates, written responses, etc. which show how "stupid" his work his. This is welcome. Let me be clear. I cast no judgment on Muslims who are offended by the book. No Muslim should be judged if he is disgusted by Rushdie and his novel. This is a perfectly acceptable and reasonable view. Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Who would kill Ka`b bin Al-Ashraf as he has harmed Allah and His Messenger ?" Muhammad bin Maslama (got up and) said, "I will kill him." So, Muhammad bin Maslama went to Ka`b and said, "I want a loan of one or two Wasqs of food grains." Ka`b said, "Mortgage your women to me." Muhammad bin Maslama said, "How can we mortgage our women, and you are the most handsome among the Arabs?" He said, "Then mortgage your sons to me." Muhammad said, "How can we mortgage our sons, as the people will abuse them for being mortgaged for one or two Wasqs of food grains? It is shameful for us. But we will mortgage our arms to you." So, Muhammad bin Maslama promised him that he would come to him next time. They (Muhammad bin Maslama and his companions came to him as promised and murdered him. Then they went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and told him about it.

Satanic Verses is one of the worst books with regard to Islam, but due to the Muslims, who were ignorant about everything about it, and just rode on emotions irked up by politicians, started condemning Rushdie, and the effect of it was clear.
His book, which didn't even deserve to be published because of the childish arguments and references it used, started gaining audience and became a bestseller. As an Indian, I was told by my parents and relatives, that there were rallies against Rushdie, but majority of the protestors didn't knew what they were protesting against, but it was mostly just some politician using Rushdie's book to do appeasement politics.
Just like Fahad Bhai mentions, this is how you respond to insult. Burning the Quran is such a big thing, but the kind of response that they showed was needed, and today, Allah made that Quran burner as a way for his message to reach places where it never went.

I have not read the book but from my understanding its not even about the Prophet. Its about 2 people who die in a plane crash and become and angel and demon. So can someone explain what exactly is in the book that is so offensive?
Narrated Abdullah Ibn Abbas:
A blind man had a slave-mother who used to abuse the Prophet (ﷺ) and disparage him. He forbade her but she did not stop. He rebuked her but she did not give up her habit. One night she began to slander the Prophet (ﷺ) and abuse him. So he took a dagger, placed it on her belly, pressed it, and killed her. A child who came between her legs was smeared with the blood that was there. When the morning came, the Prophet (ﷺ) was informed about it.
He assembled the people and said: I adjure by Allah the man who has done this action and I adjure him by my right to him that he should stand up. Jumping over the necks of the people and trembling the man stood up.
He sat before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: Messenger of Allah! I am her master; she used to abuse you and disparage you. I forbade her, but she did not stop, and I rebuked her, but she did not abandon her habit. I have two sons like pearls from her, and she was my companion. Last night she began to abuse and disparage you. So I took a dagger, put it on her belly and pressed it till I killed her.
Thereupon the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Oh be witness, no retaliation is payable for her blood.

There weren't many muftis that didn't react to that book at the time because of backlash fear or other reasons and many things were censored when it came to muslim reaction in terms of words, the only thing left as an option was protesting against Rushdie's book and trying to take it down with protest, so they don't ignore it.

I always found it peculiar how Muslims rely on religious leaders or even governments for interpretation of the Quran and Sunnah. Therefore those religious leaders have the true power over the people and this explains why there is many different understandings of Islam, why Islam changes throughout history, why Islam has been localized with various cultures and languages. The men in power change or adapt Islam to their interpretation to best suit their needs. Islam isn't really different from any other religion in this manner, if it were 2 billion Muslims would follow the same deen. Think about it if the entire world were Muslim there would still be wars and if the Muslims on Muslims violence in the middle east is any indications there would actually be more wars.
