Nakamura 350Z engine tear down - BIG FAILURE

  • I thought it would be fun to do an engine tear down of a failure we had on Drift Week 7 with Naoki Nakamura from N-Style. We gave him a 350Z HR engine car, and it lasted him through two weeks of abuse, but finally gave up and had a huge failure on the trip. We didn't realize how crazy the failure was, I have never seen a failure this bad before from an engine in person, we still don't exactly know what happened lol. He normally drives an SR20DET S13 Silvia, and I have no idea how those engines survive through his abuse, but he did say in one of our previous interviews that he had killed a 100 of them or something crazy.

    No damage to piston tops from detonation or bearing damage from low oil pressure, my best guess was a mis shift overrevving to the moon and multiple pistons exploding or dropped a valve.

    A bigger/baffled oil pan would be a good investment for the next engine. 🤙🏻

      Oil cooler would be safer incase of off roading mishaps. Still get the extra quart AND better cooling vs being under the car by hot asphalt.

    I have never seen a destroyed wrist pin. You outdid yourself.

  • @hydrocarbon82
    @hydrocarbon82 7 місяців тому

    The multiple piston failure was likely from ONE rod failing. How? When a chunk from that rod/piston bounces around and wedges between another piston and counterweight just above BDC. There's rarely more than a few MM gap, so almost any chunk is enough to stop the piston - which makes the rod crack the piston as it pulls the wrist pin THROUGH that piston. Then you have more chunks to work on another piston...
    This engine simply locked up before chunks could propagate to the rear cylinders. The amount of energy in a single piston/rod failure is similar to a quarter stick of dynamite.

    That motor was run at redline until every single piston gave up, there was no thought of a lift, lol. Agreed, I've never seen a wrist pin that went thru a frickin' blender, but now I have. How? Just don't lift!

    VQ35HR is a great V6 when left alone, wish more people would swap its V8 cousin (VK50/ VK56) into them instead of a NA LS.

    I wonder if it was over revved on a big 3rd gear entry and smashing it down into first to dig out of it. Can't imagine anything else to blow up a HR like this.

    You can see a portion of why it failed is because of the paper gasket in the gallery gasket seal. that seal fails and gives low oil pressure often on HR Z's. @15:40 You probably overreved it and seized and he kept trying to use it IMO.

    Did this one have the paper gasket replaced with the metal one ? I’ve heard of the HR engines going pretty catastrophically because of those little gasket. But most just get rod knock or window the block.

    2015+ mustang gt vs 350z vs gt86 vs e92 m3? i know its kind of a strange pack of cars to choose from but keep in mind tracks where i live are mostly 2nd gear and some parts are 3rd gear. e92 m3 is the same price as mustang where i live. 350z and gt86 are same aswell and only a tiny bit less expensive than the other two. mustang got this weird self steer and well yeah i wanna get opinion from someone who preferably drove all of those and since im a mechanic i can deal with m3

      yeah it is just he cost of them down here, I have bought a bunch of them. LS3 down here are 2500-4000 as well. We don't lose anything to rust and cars last a lot longer down here, so there are lots of extra cars, engines, parts, etc.
