Marlee Matlin revealed years later in her memoir that she suffered physical and emotional abuse at the hands of William Hurt for the 2 years they were in a relationship, including sexual assault and a violent rape. “On what ought to have been one of the happiest nights of her life, Matlin recalls sitting next to Hurt in their limo with the Academy Award statuette by her side, only to be berated by the actor. According to Matlin, Hurt, who had been dreading the possibility of Matlin winning the prestigious award, turned to her and asked, “What makes you think you deserve it?” He continued, “There are hundreds of actors who have worked for years for the recognition you just got handed to you. Think about that.” In one particularly horrific passage, Matlin remembers an incident that took place while Hurt was filming Broadcast News (he would later be nominated for an Academy Award for his performance). Hurt “finally came home around 4:30 A.M. drunk and woke me up,” Matlin writes. “The next thing I knew he’d pulled me out of the bed, screaming at me, shaking me. I was scared, I was sobbing. Then he threw me on the bed, started ripping off his clothes and mine. I was crying. ‘No, no, no. Please Bill, no.’ The next thing I remember is Bill ramming himself inside me as I sobbed.”

this is a very touching thing. i mean, i know this was a long time ago, but it's a great thing for the "disabled" community. i have tourette syndrome, and i'm petrified to go on auditions for community theater. if they find out about my "condition", they won't hire me. so just the fact that she won, it makes all the difference to every person who's been told they can't do something just because of the way they were born.
Marlee deserved it.. fair and square. The movie was amazing. She was amazing! I remember growing up and seeing her on TV and thinking deaf people can really do a lot too. She was a lawyer in one series, and I was really really inspired by that.

@@larisalynnortiz8979 She didn't get nominated but the film got three Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, another deaf actor who plays her on-screen husband.
The projector messes up when she's walking up to the stage lol
I noticed that too!
Think about that.”
In one particularly horrific passage, Matlin remembers an incident that took place while Hurt was filming Broadcast News (he would later be nominated for an Academy Award for his performance).
It’s crazy that he apologized and thought she was over it just like that.
This comment was nine months ago and he has been battling terminal prostate cancer as of 2018.
It’s just crazy to me because I love that movie, and their chemistry. :(
Oh God, I didn’t need to hear that. I have always loved him, but now I have to temper my admiration with this atrocious news about him.
Why she felt the need to sully this man’s reputation is beyond me! It was in the 80’s! It was between those two!
Well, like most men….a stiff dick has no conscience!
@@DippyHippie And, like most extreme feminists, neither do you.
I remember the first time I saw sign language as a kid on the train. I was captivated by the beauty of it. At the time my mother’s office was offering sign language classes for its employees and I had been studying from a book of sign my dance teacher lent me. I went to the school for a few terms I loved it. Then this movie came out with Marlee. I was blown away. What a wonderful job she did and she has always been such a positive person with such beautiful and powerful energy.❤️. Looking forward to seeing her latest executive produced Feelint Through movie. Just saw her on the Kelly Clarkson Show
Watch CODA. It is amazing!!!
good ol' jack was her interpreter back then too?! thats amazing. gosh, i love marlee:)
Yes, I loved Fonda's reaction too. Love her!
So beautiful that was Hurt who gave her the Oscar. Both are amazing in the movie.
She is so effortlessly good in CODA.
Would LOVE to see another Oscar for this lady and more deaf actresses and actors 🥰
All five were deserving of their nominations
EL OSCAR PARA MARLEE MATLIN NO SOLO FUE UN TRIUNFO PARA ELLA SINO TAMBIEN EL TRIUNFO PARA UNA COMUNIDAD DE PERSONAS QUE HASTA ESE MOMENTO NO TENIAN VOZ : LAS PERSONAS SORDAS DEL MUNDO.
Why on earth is it without subtitles??
That was a wonderful performance. I hope she’s safe from having to relive past experiences in the wake of Hurt’s passing
It was a great movie indeed. I either forgot he passed away or don't remember at all. Wow.
Oh my gosh. This is the first I’m hearing of his passing! How did I miss that?
Such a unique talent and appreciate Oscars for giving her the award. Most deserving
she was only 20 or 21 when she did that movie, she seemed so much older
ya han pasado 28 años y Marlee Matlin sigue manteniendo el record de ser la actriz mas joven en ganar un oscar.
it’s a shame that he treated her the way he treated her behind closed doors. she is so beautiful talented and was so young when she played this role.
For real and the worst part is he admitted to it.
@@rickardkaufman3988 he admitted to it, and she was just a teenager when they got together.
@@Mindy-xh9zq They got together when she was 19 not when she was a teenaget but he was 35 at the time so yeah, egregious age gap.
I actually cried watching this. So touching and amazing. I wish something like this could happen now, this world seems so cruel and heartless in 2012.
hard to watch this knowing that william hurt was abusive to her and after this win told her that she didn't deserve it. and tonight she won with the CODA team, good for you marlee!
this is a very touching thing. i mean, i know this was a long time ago, but it's a great thing for the "disabled" community. i have tourette syndrome, and i'm petrified to go on auditions for community theater. if they find out about my "condition", they won't hire me. so just the fact that she won, it makes all the difference to every person who's been told they can't do something just because of the way they were born.
Marlee deserved it.. fair and square. The movie was amazing. She was amazing! I remember growing up and seeing her on TV and thinking deaf people can really do a lot too. She was a lawyer in one series, and I was really really inspired by that.
The West Wing
I follow her on social media and she seems to be a nice / down to earth person!💟
Texting and social media must've been a godsend for the deaf.
I was so happy for her when she won this. At the time I was a new fan of her acting. She was so great in this film.
I just watched this movie again for the first time in over twenty years. Now that I am more fluent in ASL, it's more touching than the first times I watched it.
i ADORE her. loved her in the west wing.
marlee matlin is the best actress out there and man she really beat some heavy weights too..so for sweetcherimoya..dude she is talented and is a much better actress than many of actresses out there..she deserves everything that she gets and has come a long way given her disability and is a real fighter for doing what she loves and being good at it.
Matlin beat out a lot of seasoned actresses for her Oscar win but she did a fabulous job in the movie. What she did while making that movie was extraordinary and that's what the committee looks for when picking a winner. I don't think any of those other actresses were robbed of an Oscar. I believe Matlin deserved to win it.
She has a new book out. It's powerful! What a great and amazing woman!
I didn't know that Marlee Matlin won against a Murder's Row of Actresses. All great performances.
I definitely couldn't have put that any better.
It makes her victory that much Sweeter.
@@lilchicklets I could've put it better, by spelling "Murderer's Row" correctly. 😆
Considering how William Treated her after this ceremony in the limo home...
You can see his distain when he slided the trophy over
I'm here after CODA won academy award.
That movie was very, very powerful, and she totally deserved that award. I remember watching it when I was in my late teen's and being so moved.
Full circle moment for her in CODA and her costar is now the second deaf person to win!!! Coda was brilliant
After I met William Hurt I saw the interview with King by Marlee Matlin. I went to Alive Expo! and met a deaf woman and gave her a paperback of Murder on the Silver Comet Trail for the Marlee Matlin's and Carrie Fisher's of the world. Book is free on Kindle Unlimited.
I Thought that Sigourney Should've Won, Marlee Matlin has made History as the Youngest Actress to Win for Best Actress (She was 21) !!!
And also the only deaf one to win
@Sei1863 That's Jack Jason; he was (and still is) her personal interpreter, translator, and assistant.
I love Marlee Matlin! This is an amazing moment!
I recognized Jack’s voice right away! They were both babies.
As a hearing-impaired person, this is one of my all-time favorite victories!! Marlee
matlin did a spectacular job in "Children of a lesser God," she was so expressive,
without ever speaking. It was all in the eyes. She is still the youngest Best Actress
winner of all time.
imagine how great it would have been to see the audience applaud in sign language for her
She was and still so pretty.
Just finished watching this movie. A very deep and emotional story. Certainly one of the best movies of my generation. Marlee Matlin is a brilliant actress, I had no idea of that. Great movie, very well done
Kinda hard to deny that Weaver should’ve gotten this award. Thirty years later, and that performance is the definition of iconic.
wow who knew that many years later she would be working with Troy Kotsur the first deaf actor to win an oscar. CODA was great didn't do as well in the theatres but thats just cause they released it during the heart of the pandemic but nonetheless it was a fantastic film.
really - well - deserved!!!! she was the only one of the nominess that didn't exagerate in her acting - anyway she couldn't with such a part!! she'a also the youngest winner in this category, the only really deaf, and one of the few the won with their debout film!! she'a also very pretty and well dressed but i don't like these glasses!! i really admire her!!
well, imho the glasses are fine and I actually admire her also for not being ashamed to wear them on such occasion :) ... many other stars have bad vision, but rather wear contacts or nothing
her glasses are cute please
Cause the time she spoke, was when she was presenting the Best Actor Oscar the following year in 1987. She presented it to Michael Douglas.
i thought it was a great performance. it really highlighted how much viewers rely on audio from actors to really understand a performance, and i think that's why so many people are iffed by her winning the oscar; it challenges is to watch a performance completely differently.
as for the movie, it was just OK. kind of schmaltzy, but the acting was superb.
I am in love with and so moved by the way Hurt says her name. He seems so proud of her just with that delivery.
He was her husband at the time! 💙
Matlin was up against such amazing actresses - all those other films were awesome - she beat out some incredible contenders (if you see all the films you will see why). However, she definitely deserved to win...she is a great actor.
The reactions on the faces of the other nominees when the winner was declared were priceless..remind you of an era when things were much more real and the Oscars were not bargained and bought for beforehand, with the whole show being just another television event.
She was in Switched at birth!
Thanks for putting this up! I LOVE
