    For those who don't speak/sign ASL - one thing to know is the interpreter, who's great BTW, is "adding" a ton of words as he speaks. When you sign ASL you don't sign in full sentences as that would take WAY too long - you don't sign "I'm going to go to the store in a little while" you say "I go store later" and that's it, so he's adding a lot of fluff to make it feel far more natural for us, which is a pretty impressive skill for sure.
    EDIT: A few have (rightfully) pointed out that they have been working together for 30+ years and as such know each other VERY VERY well, so he likely knows what she's thinking anyway!

    • @Wolverines77
      @Wolverines77 2 роки тому +55

      I am willing to bet that her interpreter have talked ad naseum about the "fluff" he adds for her. She comes off as far too in-control to just allow anyone to add just any "fluff".

      Agreed that the interpreter did an awesome job, but an interpreters job is to interpret. They fill in words to facilitate communication and make it understandable to both parties. Signed English would be signing full English sentences. ASL is a language of its own with its own grammar and syntax which forms a complete sentence in ASL. I was impressed the interpreter was translating with almost no processing time. I almost wondered if they backed up the audio to make it more seamless.

    As someone who isn't familiar with ASL, the speed and intricacy of her signing, and her translator's interpretation speed are both extremely impressive. What a beautiful and emotive way to communicate.

    • @ross-carlson
      @ross-carlson 2 роки тому +50

      As someone who was/is (haven't used it in a few years but was fluent) this is pretty standard - not that it's not very impressive. The hardest thing about ASL as a hearing person is the "grammar" - you don't sign in full sentences as that would take way too long. So instead of "I'm going to go to the store" you sign "I go store" - which means when you're learning if you miss a single word/sign you can get lost very quickly. So the interpreter is adding a TON of "words" for us to make it feel like full sentences (which is very normal for this kind of thing)
      I really miss getting to use it on a daily basis.

    I forgot how naturally funny she is. She killed it a Comedy Central roast, and was just as crude as everybody else. Did a bit where her interpreter acted like he was offended and walked off. She says 'who will help me now?' in her own voice. Then Gilbert Gottfried comes up to the stage, crowd goes wild, he pretends he understands, but she can clearly pick up that he's bullshitting, and gives him this glare, while the audience is roaring with laughter. She's a rare one indeed.

    Marlee Matlin is a huge inspiration to everyone in the hoh/deaf community. if it wasnt for her i dont think there would be as many hoh/deaf actors and actresses out there around the world. i never heard of her before coda and now im a huge fan of hers. i hope Coda has led the way for many more hoh/deaf movies to come and be recongised in the hearing world and hoh deaf world.

    THANK YOU not only to Stephen for a wonderful, respectful interview but also to the staff behind the show and channel for making sure the video has complete, accurate closed captions (not all deaf and hard of hearing people sign, plus indications of non-spoken sounds like the bleeps are only communicated through the CCs).
    THANK YOU also for having the interpreter off-screen, so the focus is on Marlee. I guess this is also just standard for the show but also THANK YOU for not constantly cutting away from Marlee signing. Someone who knows ASL can seamlessly watch Marlee sign and understand her message without having to rely on CCs or the interpreter. It's all too common for shows to cut away from deaf people signing, even though it's the equivalent of muting the audio of someone speaking.
