this show is more than 20 years old and it's still more entertaining than anything on broadcast TV right now.
They actually let the audience cheer and didn't drown them out with singing during The In Memoriam.
Couldn't have said it better. Just been watching all the old shows from the 60s and 70s and there is no comparison. Today;s stuff is so wishy washy!

Thank you to the uploader... Memories of 2001 for me... saw this live in a pirate channel in Beijing with Chinese commentary in between breaks. (Never mind the exclusion of Best Foreign Language Film (for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"), Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Directing awards.)

Watching this and looking at the date it was broadcast and finding out that it was before 9/11 makes you realise how fast time has gone and how much as has changed in the space of 20+ years.
You watch the oscars in 2001 and you see there was still a respectability in the way that it was handled compared to 2022 and 2023 where politics have become more involved (in an awful way) and the fact that instead of it being remembered for an amazing film or performance it's remember for an actor punching a comedian in the face.
Noted but the Oscars were rife with politics in the 60s/70s. Don’t forget.
Don't forget the Oscars when the attendee's wore black because of sexual harassment. Yikes

I was stunned when I saw the clips of "Black Narcissus" when I first watched these Oscars. I had to see the entire film (I loved it). I've been wanting to see the Jack Cardiff tribute segment for his honorary Oscar again. Thanks for posting the entire awards show.

Amen!!! The last good Oscar ceremony was 2008, the year of No Country For Old Men. The year before with The Departed was the last great show. 2020's was decent with Parasite just before the pandemic. 2021's ceremony was by far the worse. This year's was bad too. They used to make it about the nominees and they had Bill Conti's music to give it magic. Laura Ziskin and Gil Gates made the shows special. Now it is all politics, too much pandering, too woke... And it even comes with a smack across the face. Sad.

Marcia Gay Harden's win for the unseen little film called Pollock is inspiring, she wasn't even nominated by Golden Globe, SAG and bafta previously, shocking by today's standard.
She even said in an interview that would never ever happen nowadays. Because now you expected to go around and shake hands with the Hollywood elite.

I remember we watched this in my boarding school living room back in Geneva we had permission to stay up late. I was 11 yrs old! I love films and those awards then the excitement and mystique of the celebrities. Nowadays its just not as magical. Thank you for this time capsule i didn’t remember some of these nominations ❤

Julia is great! But I really thought Ellen Burstyn deserved the Oscar for her performance in Requiem for a Dream. That was acting like nothing I had ever seen before.
Ellen's role was a supporting one, yet nominated in the lead... Category fraud.

It really was... off the charts amazing. You have to figure in the movies Erin Brockovich and Requiem. Julia was on a roll with her movie; and EVERYONE saw it. I think word got out about Requiem and how harrowing it is - and so fewer members saw it.
This really was a great show….and not one person got assaulted! Oh wait….Will Smith didn’t attend!

I'm really happy "Gladiator" won Best Picture! "Traffic" was good but overrated and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was really good but "Brokeback Mountain" and "Life of Pi" were better. "Gladiator" is a masterpiece!
I also think Ridley Scott should've won Best Director for creating this masterpiece!
Gladiator is almost a remake of Ben-Hur.
