I have an 02 GT and had the same exact problem. I tore about my shifter, checked the fuses, and even looked at my transmission. Everything was fine then I checked the brake light sensor and the wire was disconnected as well. I put the wire back in and had no issues at all. Nice video I wish I came across this before ripping apart my car
my 03 had a problem getting out of park for months and recently my brake lights went out, the brown/green wire was sticking out.. quick 30 seconds fix thanks to you
Bro you saved my life. I literally took out my center console. Disassemble my entire shift knob assembly and was unable to find any Mechanical issues. Turns out you were right. It’s a electrical problem. Once I put that wire back in. And reassembled everything. It works like new. NO PROBLEMS ANYMORE!! 🎉 🙏🏽 thank you !!
Oh my god man you are a life saver. This was driving me crazy. I started my car the stupid neutral way for 2 months before finding this, same exact issue on mine. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much I really appreciate it I was stuck at Walmart. This the second time this has happened and now that I know how to do this I'm so grateful for this video. I have no family and without this video I wouldn't have made it home.
Thank you so much for this video! my fiance almost killed me when I told her I couldn't get the car out of park 😂 but we fixed it using your video, so this was very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the posting your car problem and how to fix it. I have the same problem with the shifting getting lock, I was trying to figure it out for two hours until I dicide to ask Google and I saw your video it help me to find the problem. THANK YOU
Your a God!!!! You just fixed my problem I had the same one as you the wire was out and my thing was stuck in park and my break lights didn't indicate stopping you fixed both my problem. Thank you!!!
PERFECT my wire was black and the end of it was frayed I pinched them together and stuck them in the black box they were coming from and everything works now thank you your the best
& if you need to move the car before fixing problem , turn key without starting car and switch to Neutral. then start car and switch to drive. Keep in mind, break lights wont be working.
My 03 mustang gt tail lights wouldn't shut off at all, had to un hook the battery to keep if from dying!!!! i damn near panicked but went straight to youtube and bam... Thank you sir my problem is fixed
so, i go check and sure enough, that was the problem. the wire was barely making contact, the copper was rusty an brittle. its all fixed now, thank you.
Thanks so much for posting this. My 03 GT had the same problem. The warning about the battery disconnect saved a lot of time because there is always power at the switch, even without the key in the ignition. This wire broke off because it flexes each time you press on the brake pedal. Sticking the wire back into the connector may work as a short term fix. Spade lug connectors are the permanent solution.
Thanks A lot Man This Just Happened To Me Right Now It Was That Same Cable That You Showed With Red And Green And It was Popping Out I Just Put It Back In Problem Solved Now I Could Shift From PARKING (P) AGAIN 🙏
I just ran into this twice. My 97 tbird and my mom's 01 Taurus both had this issue. The Taurus had a disconnected wire. In the tbird, the plug itself was loose. Pushed it back in and it shifted fine.
Till have time to fix..my 2004 mustang v6..I turn key on only...shift to neutral START CAR ...IF ACCIDENTLY PUT IN PARK TURN CAR OFF .. TURN KEY ON..PUT IN NUTRUAL START CAR..PUT IN REVERSE OR DRIVE...I BEEN DRIVING MY CAR LIKE THAT FOR 1 WEEK
My daughters 2000 was doing the same thing. The wire was fine but the switch was bad. Also causes no brake lights of course and your cruise will not go off when you hit the brake.
Thanks a TON man! Saved me a headache. This just happened to me yesterday, got stuck outside a pick up stop, drove there just fine then when I was going to leave my car wouldn't shift out of park. Had to call for help and luckily my dad is a smart guy and knows about cars. He ended up jiggling the key slot back and forth with the car shut off until it unlocked the shifter. Then moved it into Neutral and I turned the car on while in neutral. From there I was able to shift into Drive. That's how I got my car back home, but it still locked in Park after I parked it. This saved me some time, easy fix.
OMG and thank you as well for this video. I'm tall and it was hard to do but got er done! If there is a next I will just take out the seat so I can get under that dash.
Its a very common problem for that generation, so if your having problems with your brake lights and shifter being its most certainly that sensor behind the brake pedal
My boyfriends mustang doesn't want to shift out of park so I'm going to check and see if this is the problem. Usually I just get a friend to rock the car back and forth and I shift into drive while it's rocking (works everytime) Hopefully this is what's wrong and thanks for making this vid!
I'm confused 🤔 How would you place the shifter in neutral if it is stuck on park and won't move ?...unless you are talking about a manual transmission wish 99.9 percent of us are not ...We are talking a automatic transmission shifter ...
Same problem too, first i did the light bulbs some wore blown so i thought that might fix it but then look under the dash where the pedals are at and found out the same issue, acutually i did a fuse change too but then realized a sensor on the pedal with a wire hanging loose so i was like what the heck. So thats the brake light sensor
03 Mustang wire appears to be burnt off at the connection. Do I need something added to the wire to connect it again? I read below people were just pushing it back in? What would make it stay? Appreciate any help you can give me.
Jill Monroe the wire is held by the contacts in the sensor, so you should be able to pull it out. Strip it so new wire is exposed and push it back in. And thats it, you should be good after that.
And no for future watchers you do not have to disconnect the battery and just push the frayed end of the wires to touch were they were coming from my wire was black
Branden DeTemple honestly i jus googled it and it was really hard to find like extremely hard. But jus search up the diagram by your cars year and try to make some sense of what you see. Because it wont be the exact diagram
Man I don't even have a spade terminal ( the black box the wire go into) then are individually connected to the metal pieces on the break switch, I repaired the broken wire to a new spade but still nothing. Anybody have any ideas on what I should check next? The brake switch is less then 6 months old so it shouldnt be that.
Skylar Lowtower check your fuses and any other wires going to your brake lights because the problem could be between the brake lights and the switch or it could be your neutral safety switch.
Got Bunnies your lights could be getting power from a constant 12v source, Either 2 bare wires are touching or they are wired wrong. But i could be wrong
I have kinda the same problem my left brake light will turn on but not my right and it's not the bulbs And those wires are plugged in has anyone run across this help!!!!

Thanks man u saved me a lot of aggravation. My dad just gave me a 98 and i watched this and went out and sure enough the brown wire was broke

Thank you! Exactly my problem
thank you...this was the problem
Do I have to unplug my car battery
Yes
Thank you very much!
For someone who just needs to get it home before fixing it u can put it in neutral just before u start it and then start it and it will shift
I'm confused 🤔
How would you place the shifter in neutral if it is stuck on park and won't move ?...unless you are talking about a manual transmission wish 99.9 percent of us are not ...We are talking a automatic transmission shifter ...

how much thing is hard to get out of park should I do
You're a freakin hero dude!!!! Liked and subbed!!
how do you stick it back in
Have you had any problems with it since?
Austin Blankenship none at all, and its been a long time.
Hope it's just the wire? I have 04 mustang
I had exactly the same problem with the same wire

do you know how one would fix it completely though? like what i would need to buy and stuff
Just happen to me last night... I just kicked the yellow thing and it worked lol... But not workin I see the wire isn't connected
do I have to disconnect the battery before connecting the cable?
Yes...very important
I had the same for my 2004 but it happened again, but the wires are fine
Hi when u put the wire back in do u have to disconnect the battery or can i just turn the car off without popping any fuses
My switch keeps burning up! Where did you find that wire diagram you speak of?
Branden DeTemple honestly i jus googled it and it was really hard to find like extremely hard. But jus search up the diagram by your cars year and try to make some sense of what you see. Because it wont be the exact diagram
