The thing about chantys (and other vocal music folk traditions) is that they are true people's music. There is no dividing line between "audience" and "performer". Everyone performs, and everyone listens, and in this act are connected, in the present, in the deepest way people can be connected. Everyone (almost) is born with the only instrument required: The human voice. There is almost no greater joy (for me anyhow) than singing with a bunch of strangers and feeling how this connection grows in depth and breadth over time. I really love it at the Sea Chantey Sing when someone gets up the stones to lead a song, and it is immediately clear that this person has a huge uphill battle to carry the melody. Sometimes it is impossible to tell what the melody of the chorus was meant to be, if the song is not that well known - but eventually, enough people will recognize it and start supporting the singer, and the rest of the group can then begin to join in, until, by the final chorus, everyone is "on board" together. The sense of community, mutual support, trust, even love (and maybe a little relief) is tremendous. As Peter Kaisin says, "Think of the song as a life line, and you've gone over board. It doesn't matter if you don't get ahold of the line right away, as long as you grab ahold before the end goes by!
I can almost physically feel how the choir splashes like waves on stone; In a abundant explosion of voices, and yet the water of voices go smoothly into each other, like one water drop goes into the other. It‘s beautiful and empowering at the same time.
I think she's taking advantage of the fact that the audience is going to sing it the regular way to play countermelody to them. It works _really_ well!
I bet this wouldnt be as cool as it is here if it was on a sound engineered album. The voice diversity, impromptu harmonics and the nonexistant acoustics really bring the whole thing to life. What an experience it must have been for the folks.
That is exactly the point of this music - it is NOT professional. It's raw, and imperfect but it is for everyone to sing, not a selected few, separated from an audience.
No need to get defensive, my friend. Nazis were fascist socialists with a stupid ideology that let their government control everything. They would be extremists of the so called "left wing" in this American politics. Extremists for the so called "right wing" would be anarchists that think the biggest a government should be is settlements, and considering that people could easily govern themselves I would love to agree with them. I can't however, because I acknowledge that we would still need foreign ambassadors, emissaries, etc. My point being, getting defensive like that over your political ideology, when it so clearly is not only the opposite side, but an extreme version of it, only inherently weakens the point you try to make. This is of course meant with as much respect as one can give to an anonymous person on the internet.
"Sea Chantey" - this one is a "capstan chantey". Chanteys were the work songs of the sea, sung aboard the tall ships and sailing freighters, helping the crew synchronize the motions required to accomplish long, hard, rhythmic activities (like raising anchor, or setting sails - a capstan is a winch used for these purposes). There were chanteys for pumping, rowing, freight handling--everything that required the coordinated work of many people. They were also leisure songs, helping the crew maintain morale, and reflected the joys and hardships of life at sea, far from home and family. They also served as the conveyor of oral tradition, transmitting stories in song down the generations.
For anyone not sure a tall ship is like a stereotypical pirate ship, a wooden ship with a tall wooden pole or "mast" that had sails attached that were used to move the ship along, they were mostly used from so long ago it's not known to the early 1900's but they are still in specific use today.
This scene is aboard the ferryboat Eureka (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eureka_(ferryboat)), a historic ferry built in 1890 and now docked at the US Maritime Museum in San Fransisco, CA. It's one of several ships that the Chantey Sing has called home since it began, in 1979.

She's going to be the best pirate singer I've ever seen...
I love her voice too, but Anne Bonnet might have something to say about that.
And so it will be...
I've never heard someone sing this song in an up sound, it's like she's driving the notes high when they usually go down!
It sounds GOOD tho the way she’s singing it. Prob my fav cover, she has that spirit

Ah, not my thing
The power of the song and how it's sung beautiful

i think we need this shanty this year more than ever.... with whatever is going on..music is something that will keep us together
That one on the camera's knows how to do some good harmonics
This is a great and deeply felt rendition...
I really like the ending, where everybody is into it, but just imagine she sings that song with a professional chorus. I would love it!

Hayden Tenno thanks! One minor correction: The phrase is “t’ me” instead of “to be”. This has colloquial origins in English and Irish...

Had to laugh at the comments, this is an English sea shanty not a bloody Irish song..although those thieving sods steal every song going.
Does everybody who sings this song get the lyrics wrong? Like shit almost every cover is wrong.
The good thing about shanties is there aren't really "right" lyrics
Nah
Nope
