Many of the original sea shanties have written lyrics that date back to the 1800s, but in reality, many were much older, some perhaps as far back as the late 1500s. Just goes to show that good songs and music were made to endure, legends and stories of the past will outlive us all.

I think, just as with how in instrumentals there is often a “basso continuo” that keeps attention and track ‘under’ the song with more moderate or high pitch instruments, when it comes to songs favoring low pitch near bass, having one instrument carry the song while the rest are close to the same is best. In this case, the voice represents that instrument. Where normally a single deep voice deploying under several lighter is the norm, with Shanties, perhaps mostly deep voices with maybe 1 not works best in any given setting, if one must deviate at all from pure bass.

Fun fact: The Wellerman song isn’t basically isn’t considered to be a sea shanty because a sea shanty is a call and respond thing with the head singer (the captain) singing first then the sailors (the workers) responding to the captains call. For example: the sponge bob theme song

... I know most of the actual shanties because as a child I belonged to a group that did Middle Ages recreation. We would sing them around campfires late at night after all the festivities of the day were done. It's really weird to try to explain to people but it was a wonderful way to grow up escaping into fantasy every weekend. ♥️♥️♥️

The thing about sea shanties is that they were common folk singing almost like telling tales where the working men would sing together have a laugh and keep themselves moralised. It’s less about how hard or good they are and more about singing with others

The cool thing about Sea Shanties is that you can add almost as many layers as you want. They are specifically made for many people to sing them at the same time without necessarily needing instruments. And they are even meant to be catchy so you can work motivated at the same time
