Fun fact, when I was in the US Navy from 2008 till 2012, my aircraft carrier pulled into San Diego like twenty times. One night on base, I was with a couple of sailors and marines at the smoke pit when all of the sudden we sang Lowlands together. People from the base just started walking over. It was magical. When Assassins Creed came out on Switch, I immediately picked it up. Now I sing Lowlands on the toilet.

I rememeber when I was running a pirate-themed Dungeons & Dragons game, and this was the background soundtrack for sea travel. At one point, a character lost a bestfriend to the royal fleet, having been captured in a raid. They raided the fortress he was on, but they couldn't get to him before his execution (a la, One Piece). They destroyed the fort, killed all the sailors inside, and as the Players sailed away, the fort a burning behind them, something happens. The players are silent, grim-faced, and the crew works quietly and diligently, trying to put as much water between them and the burning fort. The air tastes of ash, cinders, and sorrow. "Lads," says the Captain, one of the Players, "There be a foul mood in the air. Give it a song." "Aye, cap'n," the First Mate speak barely above the wind, "what'll it be?" The answer was obvious. A lost friend deserves only one song. "Low lands." "Aye, cap'n." First Mate Dobs turns to the deck, meeting more than a dozen side-eyes and just as many mirthless grins. "Ya' heard 'im boys, let's hear it!" the session ends with Low Lands Away fading into the wind. A crew one man less, and all the worse for it.
This..... this literally is just perfectly executed, I couldn't imagine a situation in a pirate themed D&D session to go any better than that. Even the way that you wrote this out just reads like a great novel. Well done my friend. Part of the ship, part of the crew. Even with only one man missing, it feels like the ship is empty.

I love these shanties. My brothers and I used to play the game when we were younger, and a few years ago, we were rowing a canoe in the Colorado mountains on a vacation, and we started singing the shanties (namely "Randy Dandy o" and "fish in the sea"). Once we did, our stride synced up to the beat of the shanties, and we zoomed across the lake at Mach 10. It was so fun! No wonder sailors sang shanties as they sailed the seas. It really brings the crew together
Years ago I had the privilege to attend a summer camp that taught sailing, their for one of the activities people could go at night to sing sea shanties with the sailing instructors, it was a dark night with a group of no more then 20 people sitting around the fire singing sea shanties, a truly magical. Side note my favorite sea shanty, Fiddler’s Green, is apparently still impossible to find on youtube and that song deserves some exposure
It's a very poplar song. Loadsa videos just type in "fiddlers green" in the search bar. This one is my favourite: ua-cam.com/video/OMPId8XjLMA/v-deo.html
I had a similar experience like you at a Different camp. There was a Few sailing instructors there as well and they also did some shanties at Night with a Campfire. I was a Bit tired but I heard some music as I was gonna go to bed so I put on some clothes and walked out to see what it was. Of course there were some people at the campfire(15 of them)singing shanties and my friend was there and Noticed me. He invited me to sit down. I asked what was going on and He said “We’re singing Shanties that pirates would usually sing” They just finished up a shanty(I think it was Drunken Sailor) and they were asking us If we knew any shanties. Everyone thought about it but didn’t ask So I raised my hand and the counselor pointed at me saying “Yes Mister….” I replied “Viper.” He then said “Is there any shanties you know Viper?” I said “I have one that I know. It’s called Leave her Johnny. From AC Black Flag. Quite a Beautiful one of you sing it right. I’ll lead you guys if you want me to” so the counselors let me. I said “Well you gotta Simply Know 2 Lines where you all come in.” Which are 🎶Leave her Johnny Leave her🎶 and 🎶and it’s time for us to leave her🎶 and sometimes those lines repeat. So i will make this easy by displaying a Number on my finger between 1 & 2 on the part you guys come in. if I do 1: 🎶Leave her Johnny Leave Her🎶 and 2: 🎶and it’s Time for us to leave her🎶 so after they Got what im Gonna Do I asked them if they’re ready. I took a deep breath counselor said “When your ready Viper” I breathed in… 🎶I thought I heard The old man say🎶 then displayed 1 Finger and everyone Joined in. The next day Most of the people from the campfire Told me I made a Great performance. They nicknamed me “Maestro” since I conducted it and sang as well.

For the longest, I was pretty well isolated in my love of shanties; then AC Black Flag came along and I thought they might catch on. Low and behold, it took 7 years but we made it to the year of the Sea Songs and this video felt so good to sing along to. I am happy!

Lowlands will always be my most beloved shanty, and I always tried to hear it in any of my voyages when I played AC4. The melancholy that one feels at sea, after having completed a mission or beaten many a navy can't be compared with anything.
most are the same, actually (pretty sure they're even the exact same sound files), but the ones rogue added were damn nice, you're right. would be great but since it's no longer pirate/sailing focussed (plot wise I mean) I doubt it'd fit too well thematically... I'll be honest, if they're up for it in general I'd be happy to provide my 100% file of rogue so they have all shanties and can do whatever they like with whatever customisations for the background gameplay
There’s smth indescribably beautiful about these songs and their voices Brings tears to my eyes, nostalgia is strong with this one Good days those were

I couldn’t afford Sea Of Thieves, so I bought Valheim, built a longship with my friends, and we just travelled around the ocean singing sea shanties together. :)
This gives me flashbacks of when I played sea of thieves with a bunch of my friends and we got ona Galleon with 15+ people and sang sea shanties around the islands and people would say how synchronized and good we sounded

I feel like this is secret message/shanty to Jack sparrow aka Johnny Depp. I think it's not coincidence at all.
Randy Dandy-O just hits different, their harmonization is mesmerizing. Chills.
This one is my favourite:
ua-cam.com/video/OMPId8XjLMA/v-deo.html
There's loads on Spotify
Barney McKenna had a rendition of that as a song, but never heard a shanty of that name.
@@viperdmk1483 the camp i went too had a tradition of everyone who took sailing classes getting a nickname, and then at the end of session we would write our name on the main building, my nickname was frisbee
Randy Dandy O legit gives me flashbacks to playing this game when I was younger. Serious nostalgia. Thank you guys for doing this.
Yeah, imagine not boarding a Man-o-War you wrecked, cuz some pirate Bois started off with Randy Dandy O
Love even how they put it in the intro of AC Rouge, truly some memories of Xbox 360 days

"Low lands away" That song played when She died in the game and my crew sang as we sailed away. It was so sad :(

Lowlands, Leave Her Johnny and Padstow’s Farewell are just so good
Lowlands will always be my most beloved shanty, and I always tried to hear it in any of my voyages when I played AC4. The melancholy that one feels at sea, after having completed a mission or beaten many a navy can't be compared with anything.
Shanties from Assassin's Creed Rogue next?
There's an interesting distinction between the North Atlantic vs. the West Indies shanties
most are the same, actually (pretty sure they're even the exact same sound files), but the ones rogue added were damn nice, you're right. would be great but since it's no longer pirate/sailing focussed (plot wise I mean) I doubt it'd fit too well thematically...
I'll be honest, if they're up for it in general I'd be happy to provide my 100% file of rogue so they have all shanties and can do whatever they like with whatever customisations for the background gameplay
