    The only downside to "Bloody Mess" is that you'll sometimes have to spend longer looking for a specific enemies body part to loot them than you did actually fighting them.

      I liked it well enough for one playthrough, but it also feels very unimmersive for me. The extra damage is not THAT much of a bonus for me to be staring at exploded carcasses the whole game through. And you might as well pick a better perk that's also damage based.

      @@RedFloyd469 Indeed. There are many perks that add +10% +15% +25% damage for certain weapons. Sure, Bloody Mess adds +5% to every attack, but most players specialize in one or two weapons anyway, so it is better to get Grunt, or Ninja, or Laser Commander for the damage boost - especially those that increase critical hit chance.

    LONG HAUL is essential for farming Legion Assassination Squads; with a high enough BARTER, you can take all their weapons, armor, ammo and $$; sell them; soon you won’t need that pile of chump change in the Sierra Nevada Vault; I finished one playthrough with nearly 1/2 Million caps, mostly earned from killing Legionnaires; it also helped that I used the Right Now perk, to get extra perk points early, to dump into Barter; with enough caps, you can sneak into The Divide, early, and buy a set of Riot Armor, by lvl 10, and hunt even more Legionnaires…

    Attempting to defend all or most of these perks, GO
    10. Blast Radius: Well yeah, no kidding that blast radius can backfire, explosion radius in the game in general is huge, hit the deck is almost mandatory for explosive builds. Its a great supplementary perk.
    9. Weapons Handling: Yeah as you said, its good but if you're not looking for the heavier weapons or have high strength its not necessary.
    8. Unstoppable Force: Yeah its kinda mediocre unless you're fighting human enemies because lemme tell you, the white gloves LOVE blocking their nuts off
    7. XP Perks, cant really defend most of them bc they're noob traps, except for lessons learned as its 1 slot for a far more effective boost to XP gain, and even then becomes a dead slot when you hit 50.
    6. Certified Tech: Yeah the bug kind of makes the crit chance irrelevant but the scrap components are great, especially for science focused characters. Faked sierra madre slugs and energy cells, auto inject stims galore, scrap metal and electronics are invaluable for making things like weapon repair kits since sometimes you'll be plain short as fuck on scrap electronics, and scrap metal is used in several recipes.
    5. Yeah nah Junk Rounds is worthless.
    4. HOP OFF LONG HAUL YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THAT PERK SAVED MY SANITY WHEN I WAS OVERENCUMBERED WITH LOOT

    With Junk Rounds, another HUGE problem with Junk Rounds, is that you can BUY ammo from the Sierra Madre vending machines. Why waste all that time and effort to make a piddly 54 rounds of ammo when you could instead just buy a bunch of ammo from the vending machines once you find the holotapes to unlock those? And yeah, chips are limited... until you get 75% of the way towards getting banned from the casino, then you get regular shipments of 1,000 chips to use in the vending machine in the BoS bunker after you're done in the Madre for the rest of the playthrough, where you can buy stimpaks, weapon repair kits, and yes, ammo. As much ammo as you could ever want.

      Junk Rounds can make you ammo for 12 gauge and 20 gauge, which you can find weapons for but can't buy ammo for in DM (ammo is only in random stashes). Still utterly useless.

      Step one: Start hoarding scrap metal, scrap electronics, wrenches, damaged books, clipboards, pencils, household appliances, plates, coffee mugs, and various unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Taking Long Haul helps with this.
      Step two: Complete Old World Blues. Haul most of the junk back to the Sink and feed them to the various deranged appliances for crafting materials and Salient Green. Sell the Salient Green for a ton of caps. Set aside one bottle of Wonderglue for every two damaged books, then use the remaining glue and the duct tape to turn the scrap metal, scrap electronics, and wrenches into weapon repair kits.
      Step three: Take the Voracious Reader perk. Get Veronica and have her follow you to your home. Pick up the half-ton of books and Wonderglue you have laying around and use her as a workbench to craft 400+ crit chance magazines.
      Step four: Travel back to the Sink and rebuild your character at the Auto-Doc since you won't be needing Long Haul or Voracious Reader any more.

    Here’s another great thing you can do to get around Rad Absorption’s slow rad reduction: Press the wait button. Literally that simple. As long as you’re not standing in an irradiated zone, press the wait button, wait a few in game hours which takes very few real life seconds, boom! You’ve decreased a bunch of radiation!
    If you don’t care about the time of day in New Vegas, if you’re not in combat, & don’t have any night time perks, Rad Absorption’s not as bad as you think it is. Going to a doctor is nice, & you’ll probably have a bunch of chems to get your rads down by the end game, but you can bypass the slow rate of the perk by using and abusing the wait button. If you’re willing to invest in the perk because you’re so paranoid about radiation. Which admittedly some players are.

    Also: For Rad Absorption, perks and armor effects and whatnot, that do a thing over time, generally tend to keep doing the thing while you're quick traveling. So, if a journey would've taken you five minutes to undergo the hard way, traveling the fastest route possible, then you'll arrive to find five minutes' worth of Rad Absorption have taken place. At five ticks per minute times five minutes, that means you lose 25 rads just for doing some fast traveling you were gonna' do anyway.
    Additionally, Long Haul isn't *just* for grabbing all of Dead Money's gold bars. If your play style has you grabbing enough loot from every enemy you kill, that you're getting over encumbered frequently, then Long Haul will let you quick travel to a vendor every time you get the "over encumbered" message. ...or stash all the excess loot you're getting in a container near the start of the dungeon, then once the dungeon's cleared, hit "take all" on that container, and fast travel despite being MASSIVELY over encumbered.

    Weapons handling is a good perk in Fallout Tactics. You can recruit people with specific character settings so you can only adjust them to some extent. If you take them early on, you can change the characters more. Some of the later recruits have good Big Guns skills but can't carry for example M2 Browning. With weapon handling you can carry big guns without having the strength requirements which is a big help when you are already around level 20 so you can't customize them so much.
    The best perk, on the other hand, is Jury Rigging :)

    I've gotten a decent amount of mileage out of Splash Damage, but that's very much because I've paired it with Travel Light. Juking into fling an MFC or Tin Can Grenade and rapidly pulling back at nearly max Movement Speed makes it much less likely for me to get caught in my own blast and makes scoring hits with the rather fiddly, bouncy grenades much more consistent.

    That rad perk is useful on some builds. Like Energy with that doesn't use Light Armor, you just have too many perks with nowhere to spend them and you are slower so you get more rads. That and if you play Tale of Two Wastelands then you gotta deal with all the rads in Fallout 3.
    But in most cases, yeah the perk is useless.

      depends on a build. Preston and Deacon are generally the best perks. Strong if you are melee build, Hanckock for vats crit build. The rest are trash. Just use lone wanderer perk, it's better than anything companions can give you.

    • @MrGhosta5
      @MrGhosta5 Місяць тому

      @@Zeon081 Once you have the perk it's permanent. You don't need to keep the companion around. You gain companion affinity as long as they're in your party. You can just stand in a corner and leave the game running and then come back and then talk to them to begin the next stage.
      @Zeon081
      Piper's is a lot of free exp if you get her's early.
      Deacon's is really strong because the sneak attack bonus from cloak and dagger is multiplied by Ninja and Mr Sandman. Just get Cloak first because for some reason cloak doesn't affect ninja and sandman if you get cloak afterwards. The railroad also has a lot of really powerful early game items.
      Preston's is really good and will be active pretty much all the time.
      Danse's is just a nice 20% bonus damage to a couple of common enemy types.
      Cait's is completely wrong. What it actually does is if your AP is below 25 it regenerates 50% faster. It's an okay bonus but if it worked like it says it's supposed to it would be really strong.
      Codsworth's is a very small bonus but if you have Automatron installed then even a tiny bonus is appreciated against robot death squads.
      X6-88 +20 energy resistance is +20 energy resistance. For lols you can get this perk and then betray the institute and then laugh as they try to kill you with the energy weapons they just taught you to resist.
      Hancock's is good for a vats crit build.
      MacCready's is good for any ranged vats build. It originally was bugged to give +2000% chance to hit the head.
      Strong's works well with melee but specifically the low health melee build.
      Curie's is not very useful but she's one of the more interesting companions to have following you around.
      Nick's is useless. Hacking is already easy enough or you can just have Nick hack the terminal if you don't want to invest perk points into hacking. Also his quest is boring and requires you to travel to every police station on the map. That said, old Belethor is a great traveling companion.
      Longfellow's is pretty good considering how tanky fog crawlers and mirelurks are.
      Gage's perk is a very small bonus to xp from kills and damage resistance. It's still a bonus but it's not really noticeable because most players are already high level and good armor when they start nuka world.

Also, not just good for the gold bars, the commissary things in the divide are bugged, if you clean them out of all 6k caps, leave, then open it again, it will restock the caps, they are where I got to sell everything in bulk. Just fast travel to the dlc entrance, then to nearest commissary location, then do the deed. I picked it up and was super happy with it my first time going through the divide from all the marked men armor and weapons you get, you just get so much and it's all worth a lot too so it's nice to be able to zip to the nearest commissary after grabbing every single non fixed object within your latest marked men skirmish. Also didnt know the keeping perks after bullying Chet for 37 hours trick was exclusive to dead money perks, when I did it years ago I always thought that it was only perks that have no stat or special reqs, because in my mind that made the most sense, stats and special change when you do the reset, level doesn't I don't think. Maybe both? Is explorer a DM perk? Because what I used to do was bully Chet to 20, make a save, then when I wanted to play with a new build I'd just start from there and reset and explorer was a perk i had in the keep roster just because it's still useful even if you know the game map very well (mainly for finding the fuckin armor in HH cause i always forget where that particular cave is)

    @DraconiusDragora Місяць тому +4

    The thing is: Long Haul, is a base game perk. It existed way before any of the expansions.
    And it is the most powerful Perk you can have in Hardcore mode.
    Since you can still fast travel in Hardcore mode (Survival Mode basically), getting over encumbered was extremely easy, since Ammo weighs a lot, having too many weapons, food, healing powders, clean water. This perk became quite literally essential.
    Also sure in a non Hardcore playthrough the perk that removes Rads, is kind of redundant, because you can scarf down Radaway like no tomorrow.
    But in Hardcore, how much food and water do you have on you? Actually many times, you will gain *MORE* Rads from the amount of food you need to balance out the Radaway. Since it will require you to eat and drink more.
    And Cannibalism in Hardcore can be very useful since it is free food on the road.
    Sometimes you have to put in the weight of the perks on all difficulties. Since a perk that is useless in a non hardcore or survival mode may be essential in the hardcore or survival.
    It goes with the same as the old argument of "Damage Reduction is bad, because I can just use TGM".
    Same with the Hacking wiz, some don't want to use the exploit of going out, and then back in, to reset the hack attempts. So it still serves a purpose for those people.
    And yes the go out and in to reset hacks, is an Exploit, it is not intended to do so.

    • @ReapeeRon
      @ReapeeRon  Місяць тому

      I disagree, I only play on the very hard hardcore mode Long Haul is nice to have but I have never seen a need in it. If with mods that limit your carry weight to 100 you still don't need it. Only take what you need, you also don't have to get a ton of rads from food and water to get to high hp in hardcore, Sunsets are the best early game healing and once you hit level 20 you can Them's Good Eattin, or at level 4 you can get Rad Child and waste no healing for 90% of the game. I also disagree with the computer resets, this is in 3,NV, and 4 at this point it is a feature.

  • @TheRavenShadowsWolf
    @TheRavenShadowsWolf Місяць тому

    Blast Radius would however make Hit The Deck a very good option to take for mitigation; and if you're going explosive weapons anyway to benefit from Blast Radius, you're probably also going to want Hit The Deck.
    * For the impatient; I would argue Swift Learner at least for one rank - Yes it's 10% exp when the majority of exp rewarded is bupkiss, but it's also a flat gain. For one perk point. You get 25 of them in game if you go up to Level 50 (In theory anyway, I haven't played in a LONG while) so 1 perk point to max your power faster can be a decent trade off. Especially if there's nothing else you really want at whatever level you choose to take it.
    Rad absoption I'd say is more not great as it may conflict with rad child... BUT it can also mitigate the negatives from Rad Child by keeping you at a lower bar over time. So depending on how much HP regen you want they CAN work together. I think this one is more for the stubborn pack rats, and the very patient. Or who want a particular themed build.

    How dare you put Long Haul on this list? The Strong Back / Burden to Bear perks are for newbs who can't manage inventory properly.
    Long Haul is essential after Dead Money. Even if you did OWB and have the Transportalponder, there are other important places to travel to.
    Also, Rad Absorption is unnecessary with how easy it is to get rid of rads, but it works continuously in the background. Unless you are often in a high-rad zone, just sleeping, fast-traveling, walking around will eventually flush out all the rads making rad-away irrelevant unless you are in Vault 34 or Searchlight.
    It pairs well with the Atomic! perk and hotkeyed coyote steaks: eat a coyote steak for a strength and speed boost from the radiation, and then Rad Absorption takes it right away.
    Even if you have Rad Child, you will have ways to increase your rads faster than Rad Absorption can take it away.

    Skill and Experience Perks in my opinion fall under the similar blanket of "after a point, Perks aren't really necessary for a focused build". Lessons Learned is probably the only one I'd consider for anyone, as it scales and does give a huge chunk of EXP, helping you get to the highest levels (because why not become ungodly powerful). Here and Now is actually the most useless since you're better off just leveling 10% faster anyway. I only ever use it for finishing off any last bit of skill leveling post-30. Tag! is only useful if you're running with a low intelligence build, can't really go wrong with an extra +15 (even if Educated eventually gets you more than that in 8 levels), but then you could argue Comprehension has an extra +1 skill gained per book AND you can get double the skill boosts from a magazine, so if your character collects them, getting a +20 to skills is certainly nothing to sneeze at early on, or even in the midgame. But when you're in the 20+ range, you've usually taken the perks that define your build. By level 10, with a shotgun style in mind, you can take the 10% damage to opposite sex, Rapid Reload, Bloody Mess and/or Shotgun Surgeon, Commando or Quick Draw (Cowboy for the Lever Action Shotgun), and Finesse (or the aforementioned perks you didn't take). At 12, I take a quality of life perk. At 14. At 16, I should have high enough guns to take "And Stay Back'. But honestly, there's a stretch of taking perks for a shotgun build that can be a coin flip between extra XP generation or more AP.

    I think Atomic is pretty bad tbh. Sure, has AP refresh for Rad sickness, but that movement speed bonus is only applied with receiving Rads. Very situational. You could horde Coyete Meat to get some Rads over time for a short speed boost, but it's honestly not worth the hassle and reminds me of FO4 Ghoulish

    Idk if I’m doing something weird but I did every single mission in the game as a non-stealth build excluding mutually exclusive ones and never reached level 50. I tend to get at least 1 level in something like swift learner just so I can experience max level gameplay.
    Also explored every marked location including all marked locations in all DLCs

      If you start with the Skilled trait and take Educated followed by Comprehension early, you can have very high skills starting a low level and can get a lot of XP from NPC interactions: passing dialogue checks. Also, you get more XP from picking locks and hacking terminals than from killing enemies.
      I always take Skilled, never take Swift Learner, and I reach level 50 without trying before I am halfway done exploring. If I start the DLCs any time after level 20, I will hit max Level before finishing all 4.

      @@CliffSedge-nu5fv In that specific run I played NCR and took skilled. Explored every location picking all locks and hacking all terminals I could find even if they were to irrelevant optional exits I never used, did all quests I could find at those locations that weren’t conflicting to the NCR, even some of the more generic noncombat legion, yes man, and house quests. After doing all the quests I looked up the wiki and did every unmarked or hidden quest I could, then I wiped out every single enemy encampment killing them all. Looked up enemy encounters at unmarked locations and killed them all, did all DLC doing likewise with 100% completion. Was like level 48 going into Hoover dam. Never reached the level 50 perks. A handful of minor quests were locked that I could have theoretically done if not for other options locking them.
      Also played with 9 int upgraded to 10 at level 2 and even cheesed legion game at cottonwood for the lucky sunglasses, used skill checks almost all the time they were offered.
      I don’t know why I had such low xp gain, only thing I can think if others don’t have that problem is that completing the DLC at lower levels gives less xp or something as I did dead money at level 5 and completed all dlc by around level 25 or so.

    I feel like most of the perks that are just bugged should be honorable mentions. Like if you just add a mod that patches the perks so that they function as intended then they're pretty okay. Also I'd say Explorer is more useless than some of these perks since it literally just adds every location to your minimap and nothing else.

  • @Robert399

    I think Weapon Handling's useful if you're only gonna fight with guns/energy weapons. Saving 2 SPECIAL points is a big deal. And sure, there's the strength implant, power armour and spine at the end of OWB but it's a *long* wait to get some of those pieces, especially if you don't know the game inside out. Agree that all these others perks are useless though.
