"You Got It" is a song from American singer Roy Orbison's 22nd studio album, Mystery Girl (1989). The song was released posthumously on January 3, 1989, with "The Only One" as the B-side,[2][3] and released again with "Crying" (version with k.d. lang) shortly thereafter.[2] The A-side reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Adult Contemporary chart,[4] returning Orbison to the top 10 for the first time in 25 years.[5] It also reached number three on the UK Singles Chart in early 1989, posthumously released after Orbison's heart attack on December 6, 1988. Although it is an Orbison solo single, Orbison's fellow Traveling Wilburys bandmates, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, co-wrote the song and played instruments on the record.
According to The Authorized Roy Orbison, the song was recorded at guitarist Mike Campbell's garage in Los Angeles, California and mixed at George Harrison's residence Friar Park in Henley-on-Thames, England.[6] Orbison gave his only public rendition of the hit (a mimed performance) at the Diamond Awards Festival in Antwerp, Belgium, on November 19, 1988, just 17 days before his death and before the single was released. This footage was incorporated into the song's music video.[7] A 2014 version incorporated videos of rehearsal and practice sessions.
This was the Late 80s. And what a Magnificent Song. It Speaks a lot of Volumes of the Way a Man should Love a Woman. This is One of My Favorites of Roy's.
This was on the radio all the time between about 1989 and 1992.
Roy Orbison enjoyed a revival of his music in the years before he died on December 6, 1988. Today is the 33rd anniversary of his death. "You Got It" was released a month after he passed and quickly became a top ten hit. Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty helped wrote the song and Lynne produced the single which is why passages of it may sound a bit like ELO with those string arrangements. Orbison worked on the album featuring this song during the last year of his life. The other hit from it was "She's a Mystery to Me" written for Orbison by U2. His voice shines on that one too. Included among the many contributors to the album are George Harrison, David Evans, Paul Hewson, Elvis Costello, Steve Cropper, and T Bone Burnett. And all this more or less led to the formation of the Traveling Wilburys. I might have the vinyl of the album stored away, but it's been so long I'm not certain.
Interesting ‼️
I had heard of Roy Orbison when this came out in the late 80s, but never really sat down to listen to his work. My Mother loved him and always quoted the Elvis saying that is something like "Roy has the best voice ever heard". Now I have nothing but admiration for him, his life and his voice. Legend.
🔥🔥
Roy Orbison is great. My favorite song is Blue Bayou, and I love his part in the Travelling Wilburys.
Love this song. It has that 60s throwback sound but with the late 80s production quality. It’s too bad he passed so young, shortly before this song was released I think. I didn’t realize how much tragedy he endured until I read Johnny Cash’s autobiography where Johnny talked about him and their friendship. He went through some stuff. Also as I type this a commercial just came on TV playing Pretty Woman…eerie!
That is eerie ‼️
Great song great singer royorbison was awesome
great to see that new generations can appreciate this song. Thank you for share the reaction!
what i love most about roy is just simply his insanely amazing voice.
ONE OF MY FAVORITES OF ROY!! MAKES YOU WANT TO DANCE, SING & ENJOY GREAT MUSIC!!
quick fact: I was born 22 days after he died in December 1988. Sad loss of a great singer, who sings from the heart. There will never be another like Roy. What a Legend!
This is all just coincidental, but before he died, Roy Orbison had been signed with the Virgin Records label, and he had delivered both a "Greatest Hits' record where he rerecorded his best-known songs, and the MYSTERY GIRL album, which this single was the first from; at the same time, there was a great up-and-coming band called Jellyfish, who also signed with them, and were fans of him and the producer of MYSTERY GIRL, Jeff Lynne from ELO.. Some time after Roy died, Virgin released an album called KING OF HEARTS, which had more songs he recorded before his death, and one song, "Heartbreak Radio," was getting momentum on several radio stations. And again, about the same time, Jellyfish released a song called, "The Ghost at Number One," which I've long believed was inspired by the posthumous success Virgin had from having Orbison under contract after he died, since MYSTERY GIRL was a big album with several popular songs, and in the lyrics, Jellyfish have a bridge, "Mrs. Lynne / the fruit of your labor / Gives us a savior, nappy superstar / To you we bid congratulations, to him adulation / A blessed life begun, for the ghost at number one"
My point is, Jellyfish loved Roy Orbison and ELO, and their songs are worth exploring.
I found out about Roy's death after listening to You Got It on the radio, and the announcer saying, "And that was the late, great, Roy Orbison. There will never be another like him."
dang😢
Here's some more of Roy's great songs you would love also:
( In Dream's) ( Running Scared ) ( Drove All Night ) ( Only The Lonely ) ( Pretty Woman ), all are great!
Written in 1987 and released in 1989 after his death. It went all the way to number one, and yes, has been used in endless commercials. Whomever has control of his estate is not too shy about selling off his songs to advertisers it seems.
Wow interesting ‼️
It made it to #10
But it's a masterpiece
Another reason The Empress is an amazing reactor? She knows her music. I love that she accurately placed the time period for this song...it was a tricky one!
wow thank u!😊
You're too cool too, Empress! Love this song!😍😎
Thank u‼️🥰
love this song, easy to sing-a-long to this one. thanks empress!
It’s such a great song! Thank you for this reaction, Hayden and Empress!
our pleasure
this song has more hooks than a fishing tournament !
Roy Orbison performed this song at the Diamond Awards Festival in Antwerp, Belgium on November 19, 1988, just 17 days later he died from a sudden, and massive heart attack while visiting his parents at their home in Tennessee. Roy Orbison was 52 years old.
one of the most beautiful male voices in the modern music era
Such a TUNE!!
🔥
I don't usually leave comments or likes but you're vibin so keep doing what you're doing
Wow thank u‼️
You asked for it, you got it, Toyota.
I believe that this song was produced by one of same producers who worked with Olivia Newton-John on the Xanadu album, ( that we all love so much.)
Ah cool❤
This really is one of those BOSS love songs you just don't really hear anymore. Great reaction too kid!
Roy
In Dreams
If you get a chance E, check out Handle With Care, by the Travelling Wilburys. Roy also sings in that, and it was recorded just before he passed.
It's got that typical Jeff Lynne sound. Amazing.
So it was basically produced and (co-)written by the same guy who wrote and produced Xanadu (the song).
wow so cool
... love this song, love Roy. :)
Great song! Love this, and love Bonnie Raitt's cover too!
60s star with a late-80s comeback. Then he just died.
Empress, I hope your patrons request "Leave It" by Yes (the long version). It's really good.
🙏👍💯🌹
1989
Great reaction! Please react to Elvis Presley. Trying to Get to You, If I Can Dream from the ‘68 Comeback Special. Elvis’s voice, charisma, style, talent are unmatched even today.
Thank u‼️
The background singers sounded a little like E.L.O. to me. Great song E
