James and his father were both officers in the British military, and despite being very close, were never overtly emotional with each other, and when this amazing video was made, James's father had only recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney disease, so this video ( done in one take) was a very tough one for James to complete, and we can see the slight wavering of his voice on occasion. He refused to use 'Auto Tune' because he wanted everything to be 100% real and genuine. I heard he donated every penny of his royalties of this song to the brilliant UK charity' Help For Heroes' who do so much great work for ex-servicemen & women, which was a lovely thing to do. God bless him. ❤ 👍 🙋‍♂

were you struck by the horrible irony of James trying to bully the public into taking medications with a high risk of causing demetia amongst other things ?? he delighted in saying he took all 3 brands. Do you think he took the real ones ? Do you think he was given placebos? Amazing how we are always facing the wrong way when the enemy attacks.

It's honestly the phrase "It's my turn, to chase the monsters away" that get's me. Like a full circle of life moment, where your dad looks after you, scaring the monsters away under your bed.
To the sad realisation that your dying father is probably terrified of the darkness, the unknown... the monsters. And it's your turn to make him feel secutre, and chase the monsters away.

My mom lasted a long time after a stroke, 11 years actually and she passed in her sleep in 2015. Towards the end she needed help walking, standing and eating. One day I was helping her back into bed. I picked her up (she was about 80 lbs. at this point) and asked if she wanted to dance. She chuckled a little and weakly said "We can dance tomorrow". I laid her down and covered her with her blanket, told her I love you and she said it back. Those were her last words to me. I cry more telling that story than I did when she passed. I knew it was coming to that and I was just so relieved that she was no longer in any pain and struggling every day just to see tomorrow. She was a very proud woman and I know she felt ashamed for needing the help to do things that she used to do herself. I always reassured her that it was my turn to take care of her. I don't wish upon anyone to watch their parents slowly pass BUT it was the biggest honor in my life to help her when she needed it the most. Love your parents and love each other. Tell them you love them.

For 7 long lears I had to witness it rob her of everything she was. My devout Catholic mother that I was grown before I heard her say more than $#!+ and damn in my life, on the morning she passed (the 16th of this month will be 4 years ago) she called me a goddambed son of a b!+ch for getting her out of bed. None of the direct family were compatible for a transplant, but, with the popularity of this song & the publicity of this song brought an unexpected twist when a distant cousin (Charles Blount) the same name as James Blunt's Father, came forward & was a compatible match for Charles & he is now living comfortably at home with his wife (James Mum). Also, after the recording of this video, Almost all the crew were in tears & sobbing. In his typical English Stiff Upper Lip attitude, Charlies said, why all the tears, I'm still here. Haha

Still tear up almost every time I see the video though - when it was filmed it truly was a goodbye video and you can see it all over his face how understandably difficult it was to make.

The first "It's my turn to chase the monsters away" breaks me apart every time, not gonna lie. And - as egoistic as I tend to be - I can't help but feel jealous. Because I'd have loved to feel that way about any of my family and I sadly do not. So I'm coming back to this song and similar ones from time to time to feel something.
Great reaction, guys. It's nice to share an emotional moment with complete strangers, neither one judging the other, since they don't know anything about each other.

Man, I bawled my eyes out the first time I heard this song. I'm very, very close with my parents. My Dad will turn 60 in June. My Dad and Mom are two of the strongest, hardest working people I've ever known. Over the last two years I've seen a change. I've seen them growing older. Nothing drastic, but they are both slowing down. Last year my Dad had a rollover accident on his way into work at 3 in the morning. I got a call from him in the back of the ambulance telling me he rolled and needed me to go get Mom and drive her to the hospital. I was petrified. I've never made the 15 minute drive to their house faster, it took me 7 minutes. Dad was okay, no serious injuries just banged up. It really affected me. For the first time I really thought about losing one of them. It was short thereafter I heard this song. I've since had deep conversations with both my parents. I dread the day I have to say goodbye in this life, but I know there is nothing unresolved between us.

I had both. A mother that died of cancer over a long period. My father died died suddenly of an MI. Both were hard. They say time heals all wounds but it doesn't, it just lessens the wound.

I cried. I watched my mom die of cancer after one year of treatment. I was crushed. I then was my fathers caregiver in his last five years with Alzheimer's. He was on his bed while I was next to him., After giving him a sponge swab with water in his mouth , he opened his eyes and turned his head and looked at me. I knew he was saying goodbye. I said hi dad, you're gonna be fine. He then closed his eyes. He passed within 5 minutes.

I bawl like a baby EVERY time I hear this song. I am 48 and lost my dad in January 2022 and then my mom in March 2022. My dad and I didn't have a good relationship growing up, so we missed a lot of time together. I finally managed to forgive him in the last few years of his life and we had some long talks together. We missed a lot because of the past...but at least we had closure in the end. I miss them every day.❤❤

Most people in the UK take the mick out of James Blunt, but he takes it on the chin with self deprecating humour,he is a very decent bloke and deserves all praise he gets for this song.

my father was my best friend, my brother was my mothers best friend, closer bonds, in two different directions of life, i father had cancer, my brother was away serving our country, i served but was not deployed, me and my father worked together in the facotries, drank together, i would never go out without my father, he had cancer, he did the usual treatment, i took him evey day, he was my mate my best friend, he cam home to to my mothers to die, nothing more than they could do, its life, he rallied looke good, went downhill fast, my brother was home, staying at my mothers, he went in to a colapse, by the time i got there he had past, i never got to say good bye to my best friend, and he was, he had gone, i was numb for 2 weeks even at funeral, i had no emotion, i questioned myself why, why do i knot feel anything, my brother had a picture in his hand, when hee was well side of his car pride and joy, i lost it then, because thats how i knew him

So interesting bit of info, James blunt was a Captain and served with the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo and finished out his time in the military as a member of the Life Guard Regiment in the British Household Cavalry, his father served in 3th/18th Royal Hussars as a cavalry officer before becoming a helicopter pilot and colonel of the Army Air Corps.

Great emotional reaction to a beautiful tribute James was paying to his father. I agree 100% with what the nurse told you about a loved one's passing. I have lost both parents, all my uncles and aunts, four brothers, a sister, two nephews, a niece and several cousins. The hardest by far were the ones taken from me suddenly. With those who died from cancer and other long term illness I had a chance to say my goodbyes and I also knew they were no longer suffering.

I lost both of my parents to cancer and although I had a few months with each to try to tell them how much I loved them and how sorry I was for putting them through the hell that I put them through growing up, it was tough watching their suffering. I still have regrets about the things I could have done differently to have made them prouder of me or about how I could have been a better son to them some 30 years later. It gets easier over time, but the pain never truly goes away. 🙏✌️

Never heard this song until after my dad died May 30th. I spent 7 days in the hospital with him he was fully aware and conscious. We had almost the same conversation as the lyrics of this song. He tried to apologize, I wouldn't let him. He had nothing to apologize for. He was my dad and I loved him.

My gramma took a while to pass. I remember going into her hospital room and seeing her eyes light up when she saw me. Inside I was broken but i tried to stay strong for her. I hugged her and held onto her and told her I loved her so much. I thanked her for being the most amazing gramma i could have wanted. She held onto me and told me she loved me. Then she told me she was so tired. It was at that point I cracked and cried my eyes out while she rubbed my head and said it was ok. She passed away the next day. I miss her so much. Love you gramma.

In 2016 my sister died very unexpectedly when she was just 22. It rocked my world, and 8 years later it’s still a loss that I’m learning to grow around. My father on the other has been slowly going for years now. I’ve watched him get weaker and waste away for the last 3.5 years. Yes, his passing won’t be as hard, but it’s devastating to watch someone slowly die before your eyes for years and know there isn’t anything you can do to stop it besides make them comfortable. We’ve all said our goodbyes and I love you’s. My sister and brother and I know he will be at peace when he leaves us, but that is won’t help the grief being just as intense as it was with the sudden death of my sister.

I lost both of my parents in 2022 at the age of 30 while trying to graduate from university. My father passed away in 2 days and then 10 months later my mother passed away in a week. I never got to say goodbye to either of them. What I wouldn't give to see them one more time. To see their smiles -, to hear their voices -, to talk to them -, to hug them one more time. I miss them so much.

I agree that, for me anyway, to lose a loved one unexpectedly is harder than having the chance to say good-bye through a terminal illness. My husband left the house with a couple of his forever friends to go to the nearby go-cart track. He had a massive heart attack and never came home. It's been 5 years this weekend and my heart still aches and breaks over his being gone. Last year I took care of my dad after he was diagnosed with liver cancer and liver disease. It wasn't easy watching what he went through. But I got to spend precious, precious time with him and did have the chance to hold him and say good bye.

What you are saying is true. My brother was killed in a car accident when he was 20 ans i went down a bad path that that took around 20 years to climb out of. When my Dad passed he was 85 and had Dementia for the last couple years of his life. He knew his kids and his main speaking was asking us if we ate ok. It shows where his main thing in life was is out well being. We spent the last week of his life everday in his hospital room just beiing a family again singing and laughing and saying goodbye. This song reminds of the night before he passed I whispered in his ear the it's ok, we'll look after mom. (She's a tough old farm gitl, even at 90 she still drives gardens and probably take us to the shed if we get out of line, lol)

Then I lost my stepdad in 2019 to a large pituitary brain tumor. I have to tell you I have a huge heart and a soft spot for those whom we have lost do to cancer or other terminal diseases. God bless you Burch for your losses and thank you for showing the true emotions that this and other songs that clearly show heartbreak.
