Dude that church is St Malachy's, known as The Actors Church where you were standing in 1926 women from all over threw themselves into the street as Rudolph Valentino's coffin was being carried into the church. There is a huge basement with a giant kitchen that provides thousand of meals for seniors staffed by volunteers. I used to volunteer there when I lived in NY.

In the 1960s, when I was attending classes at 30 Rockefeller Plaza to become a computer programmer, that exact block was the closest free parking! At that time it was "the barrio". I'll bet the rents were a lot less then too. Amazing what gentrification can do.

The reality of working in the city:
    1) You can get a great paying job and make your landlord rich by living in an updated shoebox with 3 other people so you can be close to all the places you'd want to get trashed or pick up trash at
    2) You can get a great paying job and commute 4-5 hours a day
    3) You can have a mediocre job, commute 2-4 hours a day, and hope to rise up but you waste decades working for employers who'd rather higher kids who have no commitments, who work longer, and use fancy buzzwords that simultaneously impress and intimidate the aging executives
    4) You can work a crummy job and live on the fringe of the city where the trains don't run, the buses are always late, and some real estate developers are converting former slums and empty lots into luxury lofts for out-of-towners who recently landed some great paying jobs and your landlord is cashing in by increasing your rent 20% but your employer says there's no money for a raise this year, but so-and-so is getting fired and you're gonna take on their responsibilities, so if you do a decent job at both your own job and theirs, maybe they won't fire you or give you a pay cut
    Did I miss anything?

Anyone in their 20's living alone in NYC obviously weren't taught about the time value of money. Putting that extra 2K/mo for 2 years into a market fund, at only 8%/yr growth would have grown into $220K in 20 years, assuming they contributed nothing more. Assuming they did the single Manhattanite thing for 5 years, that extra $2K/mo would have grown to $560K. Talk about opportunity cost.

The first apartment is legally only two bedrooms because the downstairs room has no windows. One of the upstairs bedrooms is the access to the deck and the other faces the sidewalk. The second apartment looks like fifth-floor walkup, and the two bathrooms off the living space inconvenience all four bedrooms equally. Three of the bedrooms are really small, but there is in-unit laundry. The last one has access to a nice roof deck.

Wow. The rents are astranomical. Those are good old buildings, but one would need to be pulling in at least $12k a month for it to any sense just to be renter in NYC which might appeal to people in their 20's and 30's that probably don't even make $5k a month. When I was 30 fresh out of university some 20 years ago, I was trying to move to NYC and was going to take a $50k a year job with a nonprofit doing accounting, but saw the rents and cost of living would make it too stressfull so I didn't fill that job realizing it's a low paying job for that market. If I ever had a good paying job I wanted a mortgage I could afford, but not possible. America just isn't the land of opportunity it traditionally were, but we don't really have another country or I'd already jumped on that opportunity a long time ago since this just isn't very fun.

I always laugh about if you can carry food on the stairs. It certainly depends on the person, I have lived in my house almost 34 years and have yet to fall on my slick ceramic tile stairs that came with the house. I met my current husband 8 years ago and he trips on those stairs every few months. We also have 2 wood stairs into the living room from the main level where the kitchen is located and my husband trips probably weekly carrying only a plate, bowl and beverage. I just expect it now but he doesn’t think that he’s a klutz. 😏
I raised a family in it and only had one person fall on the staircase. I grew up in homes with 2 levels and used to take the stairs 2 and sometimes 3 at a time, so that might be a factor. I do know that my husband drags his feet on stairs, since the wooden deck with stairs to the front door has the corners rounded with black marks from his work boots, which were never there prior to his moving in and probably contributes to his falls.

Thankfully I only kinda greyed out for a moment and didn't knock myself out completely, as I too was alone - though I did end up needing a number of stitches below my left eyebrow leaving a not-so-pretty scar, courtesy of my toes slipping off one of the steps and pitching me forward , bouncing my head off the edge of the top stair - ouch, ouch, ouch!
So ouchy in fact, that it was only when I tried standing up that I became aware of my broken foot, leading me to overbalance and only barely grab the bannister in time to catch myself from falling down the entire flight - and had my hands not been empty by this point...😳 So yeah - that was one lesson undeniably learned!

@@Tricia_K You were certainly fortunate not to have been injured worse. Head injuries happen to all ages during usual activities. A friend’s son, age 18, went to university and 6 weeks in he decided to join a pickup basketball game and woke up in ICU. He doesn’t remember what happened but apparently tripped on a curb, hit his head and blacked out. The kids he was playing with called for assistance and he was transported and spent the weekend in ICU. My FIL tripped down the 2 stairs from my living room and fortunately for him landed on top of my 90 pound German Shepherds. My dog was fine but my FIL had multiple lacerations on both arms and since he is on anticoagulants, bled everywhere. The dog was laying on a tile floor so saved my FIL from a worse injury. I was in another room and my poor dog hadn’t moved with my my FIL sitting/laying on top of her. I heard her initial yelp but she laid quietly while I had to slide her out from under him. My SIL removed the handrail on their long steep staircase which made me anxious. My staircases always double back so never can fall more than 7 or 8 stairs and since she lived out of town we would stay with her occasionally and have to carry our overnight cases up and down a wood staircase onto a wood floor. When they decided to sell, they were required to put in a railing, which made me relieved for the subsequent buyers.

If you want to live in The City, I mean *in* The City, this is the area.
Is Junior's only quite good now? I remember them being GREAT. But, of course, I was a kid then. Junior's Cheesecakes are a NY legend. We had some flown into Israel for a big get-together of Americans and Canadians in Israel some years ago. Yes, we were willing to pay to have them flown in.

Every kitchen sink shown is smaller than the one in my RV, and some were the size of the one in my old sailboat. Not many turkey dinners being cooked in these tiny kitchens.

I wouldn't throw away $4,500 a month and not have anything to show for it in the long run. $4,500 in my area can get you a one-bedroom house a front and backyard of decent size that can handle three big dogs running around comfortably and at the end of 16 months it's paid off. You own it you have it, it's yours. A one-bedroom one-bath laundry room kitchen dining room and living room with a front and backyard. And you can hear a pin drop a mile away it's so good quiet and peaceful at night.

It is illegal because it does not have windows for proper fire escape in some of the bedrooms. Also it does not have rails on some of the stairs and they are not wide enough.
