AFI will never stop being one of my fav bands. The punk years were the best. Sing the sorrow is also a fav of mine. They start losing me at December underground, but I still respect the direction they took. Great video Tome!
Same. I loved everything from Answer That to The Art of Drowning and even Sing the Sorrow. They lost me when Miss Murder came out and it sounded like overproduced radio pop rock.
My favorite album is black sails but basically everything before December underground was great & tbf December underground had some solid songs on it tho more main stream but thy lost me after that ! I tried to like crash love just not my style really but the talent will always be there.
I hung out with Davey after AFI opened for Converge circa 1997. There was barely anyone there when AFI played. Show was fun. He was nice. I was always happy to see him achieve success.
Black Sails is my fave album, perfect middle ground. Very few bands can stay at the top of their game for so long and through such a change in sound. Sometimes a transition in style fits well, even if you’re not into it.
I remember the first time I heard AFI .. I was in highschool when “Black Sails” came out .. thrasher mag gave it out for free when you subscribed for a year ! It was a win win all the way !! Miss when they use to work with nitro and the actual punk scene ..
I didn't know they were local, I thought they were some emo band. One of Rancid dudes and his gf or wife used to live in my apartment building, the Fred, I had to see her one day but I forgot why. Even better was the people across the street in Manor House, members of El Dopa lived there and people were constantly coming and going. I hung out wit a dut firm D.R.I one day and we were all requited to draw self portraits as the price of admission. I stopped hanging out there when some of my leather belongings were stolen but I was invited to their private move out party. They were kicked out and weren't happy about it so we had a hammer party on some dry wall. At some point someone wanted to score some crack but I didn't do any, it was a terrible day but we made the most of it. That was the early 90s in Oakland Ca so I'm not worried about repercussions or anything.
I was just tripping on that. With the Son of Sam record and all that I just assumed they were a Jersey/New York band. Makes sense though since they played my Podunk town of Sonora back in the early 2000s

SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND OPEN YOUR EYES so one of the GREATEST hardcore PUNK CDs of ALL TIME!!! starts at 90 mph and never let's up!!! Was his 1st glimpse into his GLENN influenced era!
Sing the Sorrow was the last good AFI album. Was it different compared to their earlier albums, sure. But that’s when AFI sold out and became a Hot Topic band
Agreed. It was complete shit after sing the sorrow. I watched when they went on the sing the sorrow tour at clutch cargos in Pontiac Michigan. It was an absolute amazing show!
All hallows ep and fly in the ointment were decent. Sing the sorrow is where they went in a lame direction to me. The old eps and nitro records releases are what you want to skim through
Oh yeah they were COMPLETELY different before sing the sorrow! I actually like sing and it’s follow up with miss murder but the early stuff was another level
@Tooobz-nn7ju I never claimed to be a punk. That's just an impulsive assumption on your part. To limit one's self to a single genre, such as punk, is shortsighted and vacuous. I can listen to a Buzzcocks album, yet I can also listen to Kraftwerk, Jacques Brel, or the Fairport Convention ( the Richard Thompson era) as well. It's called variety. Look into it.
Reading through the comments section, I guess Davey Havok has a lot more in common with CM Punk besides Punk using an AFI song as his entrance theme early in his career. Granted, I see a lot of the word "poser" being used, but I'll just leave that up to whomever reads the Comments section, LOL.
Met him in 1999/2000 AFI kicked my band out out of a backstage area for smoking cigarettes… I get it. He was the main guy that got pissed off at the venue bla bla bla
I remember that. I was there. Davey was mad that the cigarette smoke was interfering with his erection, which he planned to use to plow Jade Pudget. Pure gayness
Got into them in early '98. I was "this band could be EVERYWHERE!!! THEYRE SOOOOO RAD!!!" Them Anti-flag and Bouncing Soups were my top 3 CDs in my discman!!! Did I EVER think they'd be on TV with following Britney Spears? Hellsnaws!!!! But when they BLEW UP!!! 8:06 we're from Berkeley California. No you're not. This is why Greenday and AFI are lame. They have roots in small towns and when they got bigger they claimed they are from the Bay area. It's be way cooler to admit you're from a small town
Its like a teenager in drama club liked punk music then he didn't actually care about the music he played and just wanted to "perform". That's what I took from it
Jesus you need to get an f'n life. Your parents must be so proud that you are such a...follower. Grow up. That is cringe X 100 unless it came from anything other than a 13 year old girl who just discovered AFI 2 months ago.
He's a poser who jumped on more trends and fads than any other musician I can think of. Son of Sam? That was pure cringe and I can't believe London May defamed his own legacy doing that record. Davey went from wanting to be Glenn Danzig to copping from the Cure and the Smiths. He has ZERO credibility and is nothing more than an opportunist. AFI is total gayness and your girlfriend has all their records. The coolest thing about AFI is original bassist Geoff Kresge. When he left they had personaliry issues: "we're a punk band...we're deathrock...we're the Cure". The only reason I would ever buy an AFI record is in case I ran out of toilet paper and I needed something to wipe my ass. Remember their "white" period when they all wore shimmery white outfits on stage? Yeah that was straight gay.
I can’t believe you’d wipe your ass with something so ridged. That just sounds so painful. Like, there’s so much out there you could use. Like… I don’t know. You don’t have a magazine laying around or your dad’s socks? You could even eat your own poop. It’s probably not even that bad if you think about it. I mean, like, maybe there’s protein in it or something. It’s just so strange that you would do something like that. I just can’t fathom the feeling. Total sensory nightmare. I hope you’re okay. And I hope your loved ones are okay. And I hope you find the income someday to maybe get some toilet paper. It’s honestly not that expensive. It’s a couple bucks. You definitely have that in you. I believe in you. We all believe in you, bud. Just please, please, please take care of yourself. Please.
@getoldforever6774 How old were you when you got your AFI tattoo? Do you bake vegan macaroons for Davey when they are in town and gift them to him in a little black box with skulls you painted yourself? PS: how difficult is it to choose between shows when AFI and Tegan & Sara are in town on the same night?
@drugsdelaney2907 How much time a day do you spend in the basement eating corn chips and guzzling Mountain Dew while beating off your one inch rudimentary micro-peen to pictures of Davey Havok on the Art Of Drowning insert?

I prefer hardcore punk AFI, and yeah, they changed their sound, but they didn't really sell out. (At least no more than Metallica did between Master of Puppets and Metallica. Lol.) AFI will never stop being one of my fav bands. The punk years were the best. Sing the sorrow is also a fav of mine. They start losing me at December underground, but I still respect the direction they took. Great video Tome!
Same that's exactly how I feel about AFI. "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨" was my intro to them and my fave Album.
Same. I loved everything from Answer That to The Art of Drowning and even Sing the Sorrow. They lost me when Miss Murder came out and it sounded like overproduced radio pop rock.

I love the early stuff but, Sing the Sorrow album is just Beautiful 😎🖤
It’s a great album
Tome, you knock it out of the park every single time. This has to be the best content on UA-cam.
I agree showcase showdown thug murder rancid awesome channel
AFI always one of those bands that you know they sold out hard but I’d still listen to them because they were SOO GOOD
I hung out with Davey after AFI opened for Converge circa 1997.
Art of drowning and black sails got me through high school and famous monsters I might not be here without them albums
Sing the sorrow was the first I heard from them but their earlier albums really were a gateway to some awesome stuff.
strength through wounding was such a hit, created a whole genre
Best evolution format video I've come across.

Love all your videos Tome. We have the sane music taste.
I owned every album from them as a youngin. It took me a while to find Answer that and Stay Fashionable in 2005.
I still listen to sing the sorrow all the time one of my favorite albums of all time 🫡
Awesome video🎉 I love AFI and you definitely did your homework with this! Kudos!
Seen AFI back in 97 in Houston, Texas... Awesome Show
The fireside bowl Chicago. Grew up there.
Props to any guy who can rock a Karen haircut
In their latest albums, his voice always reminded me of Alison Moyet (Yazoo)
"... don't gooo!!!"

Damn early afi still fucking holds up my 4 year old loves it

El Dopa was badass.
speaking of Crimpshrine... maaaannn you should ABSOLUTELY do an epic Tome thing on them.
oh wow that first video is from Fireside Bowl, Chicago. I used to love that place!
My hero
From Punks to Posers .... 😂... Great content as always!
I never knew about their earlier stuff until way later. I was in to local Boston punk in '95 so anything California we hated. Now that I'm older I gotta say I'm super impressed by his range and ya know, artists have to grow or they just get stale.
Boston hated Cali but copied our Hardcore punk scene. Yawn
@psychobillynumbnuts1 no
I'm not a big fan except for the early stuff, but I gotta give him deep respect for his diversity and talent
This secret Ninja is the all time best AFI song ever
Great episode
Asking For It was one of their 1st names behind it!
Wasn't until the A FIRE INSIDE ep that it took hold!
I was in the South Florida Hardcore scene in the late 90s. We used to say AFI stood for "American Female Inspector"
Ahh... Old fireside footage.. the hundreds of times I was there in the crowd / on the stage ..
He went from whoa who is this dude to whoa what happened to that dude in a span of what felt like only a few years.
i really been digging your channel so far! Have you ever heard of a band called Pressurehed? Would you consider doing a video on them if you are looking for other underground bands?

Black Sails is when they became AFI, they really carved out what they were
SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND OPEN YOUR EYES so one of the GREATEST hardcore PUNK CDs of ALL TIME!!!

With 3rd season, which I STILL have that tshirt!
"Ben Weasel, he's an asshole, Ben Weasel, he's a jerk"

You hate him cuz he don't have to work

Agreed. It was complete shit after sing the sorrow. I watched when they went on the sing the sorrow tour at clutch cargos in Pontiac Michigan. It was an absolute amazing show!
I think Davey got tired of being called misfits meets the cure so he changed the sound.
Every song sounds like Saturday morning cartoons
Low IQ take. This is hardcore.
Wow it used to be a real punk band at some point, guess I'll check out their early stuff.
For all the Misfits comparisons, Shut Your Mouth - Sing the Sorrow (peak AFI!) Davey Havok always reminded me more of Dave Vanian
agreed!
I thought the same, very Dave vanian.
Idk a lot of the “woooahs” in the songs were definitely misfits inspired
At one point, he went through a Tommy Wiseau phase.
Dave Vanian? You must not have heard The Damned before…
No mention of "Son of Sam" - Davey and former member of Samhain and Danzig - for shame!! - Anyway - great content - do a Joe Meek episode!!
Flashbacks to overweight goth girls in my high school going "OH MY GOHHH DAVEYYY HAVOOOK"
Makes me glad I've never walked into a Hot Topic store.

Very proud of ya

They were ok ( i remember some video with an ice cream truck and Glen vocalisms),but then they truly sucked as they grew more and more popular.
As a teenage in the early 2000's I could never get past their emo image to justify checking out their early releases.

I like their goth style more 😂🖤💀
I have never heard of Duran Duran or Culture Club as dark gothic...always known those bands as new wave, never gothic....
It's all the same thing emo, goth, new wave. Same music with different names for different generations.
Culture club were a bunch of Nancy boys who made pop songs, they were not new wave or emo and most definitely not goth.
