- In this episode of Tuna on Toast, Ted Stryker welcomes Davey Havok to the Tuna On Toast studio to celebrate life and 30 years of AFI in this in depth and fun interview.
For this episode, it's the Avocado on Toast studio :)
Stryker and Davey cover so much ground, from AFI, Blaqk Audio and Dreamcar, to funny late night Hollywood stories and a ton more!
Davey tells Stryker how he injured his throat during quarantine, what the diagnosis eventually was, and how it's healed.
The guys talk about the big New Years Eve Blaqk Audio Show coming up and Davey actually surprises Stryker with his answer to the question about Blaqk Audio rehearsals (or lack thereof). He explains how he and Jade Puget get ready for their BA shows.
Davey tells Stryker a great story of his Katy Perry encounter including a situation that went down at her show when Davey was rocking a beautiful raspberry red Marc Jacobs suit.
Davey then explains to Stryker why he constantly creates, where that passion comes from, and what album he received for his 5th birthday.
Davey discusses with Stryker growing up in Ukiah with guys like Adam Carson, Jade and Nic 13 and the life journey that took him there.
Davey tells another great and funny story about the time he met Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Hawaii.
Davey and Stryker talk about when AFI moved to Berkeley, and the first time playing 924 Gilman Street and jumping on stage to play a few songs during a Rancid show.
Stryker and Davey then discuss early AFI albums and what the legendary concert booker Stormy Shepherd told Davey when he asked her to book AFI.
Both Stryker and Davey attempt to recall a night many years ago in Hollywood that involved supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio and the very fun Chambers Brothers.
Davey talks about meeting with and signing to a major label and what that experience was like.
The guys chat about the All Hallow's EP, the Total Immortal video, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow and decemberunderground and what the avalanche of success was like.
Davey and Stryker also chat about Dreamcar and the possibility of creating more music with Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont.
Davey reveals to Stryker his favorite AFI album and the guys talk about the upcoming AFI bodies tour.
The new AFI merch (some designed by Skinhead Rob Aston) is fantastic, be on the lookout for the different releases to celebrate 30 years of AFI.
So much ground was covered, the above text are just a few of the highlights of the interview.
Davey is such a powerful and sweet man that has always stuck to his guns.
He is a true artist and a great dude. Thank you so much for watching this episode of Tuna on Toast.....Avocado on Toast.

No matter how many interviews I watch of this man. He still is a mystery to me, It's never enough.
Davey changed my life... in 6th grade i bought the Halloween E.P... and after that, it took me only 3 months to buy every AFI cd... now i am a hardcore vocalist, and it's all thanks to him.
Davey is a legend. He's paid his dues in the music world. Dudes official.
I smile when I see Davey appear on anything.
2003 was the best year of my life, and AFI was part of the soundtrack.
They came to Australia for the first time that year. 20 years on still hasn’t been topped. What a man. What a band
Same man same
same...
I concur 🤘🏽
Davey was/still is one of my all-time singer heroes. The 14 year old me geeked out over this interview. Its so cool to here these guys talk about stuff as an adult now. Just rad dudes.
Davey is just such an absolute delight, I could listen to him ramble forever about...pretty much anything. Great interview as ever!
I listened to an interview he did on Daniel P Carter's podcast yesterday and I agree. He's such an engaging guest, you can tell he enjoys chatting with certain people.
Ilove good music,with nice verses
My favourite songs, ilove everything,but"17crimes","3dseason","love like winter","this times imperfect","man ina suitcase are fave
Also love"The days of the phoenix"
Can't stand listening to any male sounding like a female. Shit is annoying
Sing the Sorrow, possibly my favourite album of all time. Loved seeing them in the UK at every possible opportunity. Please come back soon! What a great guy.
My ALL TIME favourite!
Greetings from Sheffield 😇
Incredible album. Everything on that album is stellar
Stood out immediately cos I loved every song on the record 😍 and I almost never feel that way about any album 🙌🙌🙌
Sing the sorrow is the album of my childhood. Holy fuck not one skippable song
AFI was the most influential band of my youth. My first 4 tattoos were all inspired by the AFI albums Shut Your Mouth/Black Sails/The Art of Dowling/Sing the Sorrow.
I have a Art Of Drowning tat. 🙂
How embarrassing
Nice to see Davey is still Davey being Davey
It blew my mind that Dave’s brought up his Son Of Sam album - its an awesome album
Man for real. I still listen to that album. It’s so good!
@@WulfJake same!
I've got it in my car at the moment - one of my all time favourites.
Noo Michael!
@@danielnelson4881 not this time!! I’ve been waiting for oh so long
Rewatching this interview after the epic 20 Years of Sorrow show at the Kia Forum in L.A. this past Saturday. I adore you, Davey Havok! 🖤
This east coaster loves Davey so much. I feel like I grew up with AFI & we never grew apart.
“Now that A Fire Inside is Lit ” I just know you were excited for that pun opportunity hahaah 😂🔥
AFI played “Self Pity” at the Salt Lake show for the Bodies tour. He dedicated the song to Stormy. Listing to him talk about their history makes it so much better
You should have printed out an avocado 🥑 and taped it over Tuna
Songs from the Earth was such an underrated album. Davey and AFI were such a huge part of my teenage years, I'll always hear Sing the Sorrow or something like Songs from the Earth (Son of Sam) and hear Davey's soaring voice in my head!
Davey is such an under-appreciated artist. So nice to hear him mention the Son of Sam era.
He's a rockstar these days, what do you mean he's under-appreciated
@@greghauser742UA-cam....Reddit....the safe place for idiots to make idiotic comments... here's an example - "Whitney Houston, her vocal range is very much under rated".
"The Beatles are under appreciated and they should have more fans. They'd definitely be more likely to tour because it's financial madness to be playing to clubs and pubs with just the half doz drunks that basically live there".
It’s so sad to hear that Dreamcar didn’t do well enough to ensure a second record, it’s probably my favorite version of Davey’s vocals, so joyful, so uplifting, so so much fun, I’ll take the 50% chances of them releasing new music.
Really bad project imo. New AFI would be much better
I'm with you on that!! Also with "Bodies", I was so trilled when he said it0s his favorite AFI album, cause it's mine as well xD , And it saddens me so much, to know Dreamcar didn't do well unu
I would love more Dreamcar too. Even if it can't exist furthermore under full LPs and it's the occasional song or EP. Granted music is something that everyone has a different opinion on, but I prefer Dreamcar to AFI's discography following Crash Love, and near the entirety of Blaqk Audio - which debatably exists now as a passion project than a commercially vial outlet.
my parents raised me on afi. i remember being 4 years old and decemberunderground had just came out, and i forced them to play the cd everytime we were in the car. still love afi so much.
EDIT: almost a year later and i still adore afi with everything i have. i tried so hard to get tickets to the 20th anniversary. was gonna go to the other side of the country for them. ticket master sucks tho :(
Wow I am old
This makes me so happy to read, I was in highschool when decemberunderground came out🥰
@@ellejay1598 I was in highschool when sing the sorry came out 😢
My life in a nutshell, been listening since birth 🤘
You were 4 when that album came out?! 😭😭😭😭😭 I’ve never felt my age more than I do now
You're welcome to both of you. We all surely appreciate what you have to say, Davey. All the love for every iota of emotion and energy you present for each and every one of us fans and hopefuls.
You're so welcome, Davey! What a privilege to hear you talk about yourself and your bands! Been a fan of AFI for 20 years!
Davey just needs to accept that he IS a Fashion Icon 🖤 and the swift sunglasses at the end 😂
Stryker is a legend. The relationship he’s formed with Davey lends itself nicely to this interview. AFI forever.
I could listen to him talk forever. What a fantastic interview and thank you for asking about Dreamcar! I loved that era soo much and hoping they make a comeback sooner rather than later. Thank you for this ☺️❤️
what a delight of a chat! all those stories and the love they're shared with sure took me to them despite the fact I was just a kid by then
Amazing interview with an amazing subject. Fucking wild to hear him say the name "Son of Sam" in 2021.
My face literally hurts from smiling so huge for the entire interview! Wonderful! Davey is *chef’s kiss* as close to perfection as a human could be in my eyes. Excellent interview. More like friend’s chatting. Just delightful!
Ohh my....I was sooo obsessed with AFI. Black Sails and Art Of Drowning are you kidding?!?!? This is great thank you so much!
So glad Stryker has a podcast, one of the few who can actually interview/talk to others given his background!
He and Davey always have great chemistry this podcast could have easily been multiple hours long.
Love listening to anything Davey has to say
THANK YOU so much!
Somehow just now watching this but, Merry Christmas to meeee 💚💚💚 thank you for this. Always an invigorating experience to hear Davey speak on himself and his escapades uninterrupted for over an hour straight 🥰✨
What a wonderful Interview!!! Davey always so humble 💜
Stryker you’re so amazing with these interviews, thank you!
Such a good interview. All of your interviews feel so organic. It’s refreshing, and feels more like old friends catching up. Davey is such a humble guy, would love to see him on the street and just give him a high five.
Jesse, I really appreciate the nice words!
Such anice conversation! favourite artist and band
Love 💓😍 Afi andDavid
Love 💕
Totally! Love his aesthetic and energy. Would love to see him on the street too!
Davey and Stryker chatting and chilling out is just so delightful. I could listen to them all day. Davey fascinates me and I adore him - he is so talented as a multi-faceted artist and vegan spokesperson 🔥💜🖤
Son of Sam! Yes! I loved that CD! I’m so glad to hear Glenn was on board. Thanks, Davey!
AFI my favorite band of all time. Davey comes across like such a genuine and nice gentleman. Their lyrics have meant a lot to me. Definitely underrated as a band. The Son of Sam album he sang on was awesome. The song Michale 🔥.
I hope they continue to make music for many more years to come as AFI or Blaqk Audio.
Thank you for sharing this interview Mr. Stryker!
30 years of AFI! That's amazing. LOVE this so much
I have been constantly impressed by him and his works, lovely to see recent interview, especially a good one such as this!
This makes me miss KROQ when Styker played a bunch of AFI songs for the first time for the masses. Kevin and Bean in the morning with all the stoner jokes. Best times 😁
I just saw afi in Chicago at the Riviera on Nov 15th. The show was outstanding and Davey the ultimate singer and showman. The energy in that theatre was off the charts! AFI delivered.
i was there too! that was my first AFI show. I'm a huge No Doubt fan and learned about Davey thru Dreamcar. I'm late to the party but i can't wait for the next time he tours.
Pure pleasure 🤗,great talk!love Dave and Afi!30years! incredible
Thank you so much for this interview!
He’s so sweet “oh no, don’t do it, I’m not worth $475” 😭💕
I absolutely adore everything about this man🖤☠️ one of the best humans on the planet, not to mention one of the best vocalists of all time. So stoked to come across this interview.
This was such a good interview. This made my Monday, honestly.
Out of all the bands I have followed and all the front men or women I have admired, Davey is my all-time favorite. So genuine, unassuming, kind, friendly and a pleasure to watch and listen to. Not forgetting to mention, a talented creative genius.
Great interview Stryker! Thanks for doing this Davey. Even more of a fan after watching this. Been listening to AFI since the late 90's.
Love the chemistry here. Stryker knows how to give compliments and Davey is so open and appreciative. Great interview 👌
Son of sam is perfection.
Such a great interview! You vibe off each other well and you don’t cut him off and just let him spew out everything and then you add and lead. Top notch
I haven't heard AFI in a while, but they were a pivotal band to me growing up. This was amazing.
Everything about this interview is adorable. I love how excited they both are to be hanging out. It's infectious 😁
It's so cool hearing about the long history of AFI from Davey himself and he's such an eloquent personable guy. I just got done watching the '96 Fireside Bowl Chicago live show on BlankTV channel as well
The most fun and interesting sit down I've seen yet with Davey. Ty
This was such a great interview!
I met Davey back in 2000 in Louisville, KY. AFI slayed! Also the art of drowning is still in my opinion the greatest punk rock album of all time. Davey is to punk/post punk what the misfits were. Underrated but True artist! AFI forever! Got nothing but love! 🦇🦇🦇🦇
Rob
Came here for this comment!! Yes best album! 🤘🏻
Yessssss
Cant argue with this, sing the sorrow and black sails are also great runners up
Loved this interview ❤ , and its so crazy to hear where his influences and his inspirations about creating art came from ,universe its so amazing and how art comes and goes during the eras its just amazing to know
I love this man. Very underrated, extremely talented, great person all around. Hope to see more stuff from him soon.
Davey is just the best! He’s such a smart and articulate guy, and genuinely interesting. Always so polite!
I'll never forget, and I'll forever love the AFI/MTV concert for Sing the Sorrow. 🖤🖤🖤
I think Davey is one of the most eloquent and interesting people of all time. 🖤 my best gal and I saw Dreamcar in AZ in the very beginning and it was packed and so much fun. I got to see them again at a festival and it was just such a experience.
Loved every second. Davey is the GOAT
I ran into Davey back around October at a show in Los Angeles and chatted with him for a good ten minutes or so. He's such a sweetheart. I asked him about Son of Sam and if there would be any possibility working with at least Steve Zing and London May again, to which he said that he wouldn't feel comfortable pursuing again since Todd Youth was the main songwriter for that project. He then went on to tell me that the artwork for the album was supposed to be completely different from the gal that we got..I think he mentioned it was supposed to be a man with goat legs? Pretty much an evil Faun. Either way, as another user mentioned, it's so awesome to hear him talk of that project nearly 21 years later. Perhaps the first time he's mentioned it on video? I could be wrong.
I'll go ahead and be comment number 138 and thank you for this podcast. So well produced, so endearing, Stryker I listened to you on loveline for years and still remember something pretty specific you said (too raunchy for youtube comments even) that stuck with me my whole life haha :) I love Davey Havok, used to use his name as my screen name in chat rooms back in the dayyyy... anyways thanks again and cheers to 2022
THANK YOU! Just reading your comment, I really appreciate it!
I got into AFI during 8th grade in '96/'97. Been a fan ever since.
If I have to spend my life on a deserted island and can only take ONE album, it will be an AFI(hard to choose), but definitely AFI. Thanks for the most KILLA songs, no one out there has come close to topping the quality. Fave tunes: end transmission, beautiful thieves, girl’s gone grey, this time imperfect, bleed black, medicate, … i could go all day. Your music is food for the soul🙏
Davey is always so classy, intelligent, and well spoken.
Absolutely love him.
Afi is my favorite band ever. I have 4 tattoos inspired by them. I love all their albums for different reasons. Been a fan since I was 15 in 2001 and not one day goes by that I don't listen to at least one song.
I've been listening to AFI since early/mid 90s. So many amazing albums in different musical styles. Can't wait to go to the Salt Lake City concert later this year
Great interview ! Davey is the best
Davey H. Man. So glad homeboys still out here making tunes. Been a fan since they first broke. He's always been such a good role model- I hope he knows he's responsible for alot of great people's choice to be kind and googhesrtex while still handling there business
Wow. Excellent interview. My complete undivided attention. Thanks Stryker! Thanks Davey!
thank you, Daniel! appreciate you checking it out!
@daveyhavok just reached the point in the interview 38 minutes when you thanked us for listening to your music and message. Honestly I want to give you a shoutout as well because the music you make has evolved and I def appreciate it. !
THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR TALKING ABOUT SON OF SAM! I know I'm a little late to the party here, but that album was a riot when I was a kid.
When I was in High School I remember watching Davey post flyers on Telephone poles to their shows at Gilman. I'll never forget that. He started A.F.I. with his own fukin' boots on the ground and is as legit as they come, he's an absolute legend. Not to mention, Very well spoken and sincere. When "Answer That & Stay Fashionable" came out my friends & I lost our shit and didn't go anywhere without that CD. We had it on repeat wherever we went, day/night. Even though I personally gravitate towards the early years of A.F.I. I can appreciate how they evolved as a band and have the utmost respect for them on every level.
Lastly, mentioning Jim Thiebaud was the icing on the cake. Brilliant interview
Great interview! Great chemistry. Huge fan of both these amazing men. 🖤🖤🖤
Katie you are the best thank you!
Loving these interviews, brother 🙏🏼
@TunaonToastwithStryker This was the best Davey interview I've ever seen! It was cool to hear stories from back in the day and old experiences. Most interviewers would just ask generic questions about the new record lol Felt more like a conversation / reminiscing between old friends which I find way more interesting and kool! It sounds like you guys could go on forever, perhaps a Part 2 with Davey could be possible in the future? Maybe? Wink wink nudge nudge lol :D
Davey is the brother I never had. Absolute legend.
Thank you for the post again!❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥💫💫🙏🙏🎄🎄

Woah, the throwback part to Son Of Sam & some of the bands mentioned was awesome.
This is such a fantastic interview with DXH. I appreciate Avocado on Toast! 🥑
I remember seeing AFI on home turf as a kid between that and a kid playing greenday at scout camp got me into punk rock. Growing up in Fort Bragg Ukiah seemed big.
Davey is such an interesting person, I could listen to him talk all day.
I love the mischievious look he gives the camera as hes eating the snacks at the start. He is so beautiful.
Every time AFI releases an album the hardcore elitist in me tells me "okay, this is the last time you'll listen to them" but I'm just blown away every damn time. Davey and the rest of AFI just work magic. Awesome interview! Maybe try getting Mark Hoppus or Jim Adkins to come along
I used to be like that as a teen and my early 20’s especially in my teens when I found out Clive Barker wrote more than just visceral horror. It hated change, but as I’ve gotten older I find change more interesting especially with Davey having done different musical styles and his influences and such. Doing the same thing to me is so boring and stagnant. But yeah AFI never ceases to amaze me with each album having a different flavor.
I wish I could think the same thing, but every album after December underground I think is absolutely terrible. And it's not because they change style, it's just flat out not good
@@Boo2012Yah Every album after the Art of Drowning, really.
@@Boo2012Yah you’re not a hardcore fan, or musician.. real hardcore musicians listen to everything
This was such a relaxing, enjoyable watch. It feels like I'm part of a group of buddies just chatting about what we love.
Thank you so much!
I really enjoyed this interview. Davey seems like such a great person.
This could have gone on for another hour and I would have loved every minute. Great, personal and relaxed interview
thank you, Kevin!
Ahhh the way he says "overcome them," at 5:15 makes my heart go pitter patter.
Cool interview! Well done Stryker 🔥
Incredible interview! Love you both
love you sam!
Awesome interview! Awesome to see Davey doing so well. I'm in Texas and now I am a subscriber! Well and Island off the coast, called Galveston, which is part of Texas =)
This is the most California Davey has ever looked lol love it
davey is just delightful. a proper dude that is.
Love Davey. What a fantastic and awesome human being 💚
I love this interview
I got to see Dreamcar live in Sacramento it was so good and got me back into AFI
such a cool interview, what an inspiring man! great job
