Three years ago in 2020 Elizabeth Schowachert sent me some of her hand made brushes and tools to use with oil and cold wax medium. The result was a blog post I wrote for her which has helped countless artists to see how her tools are perfect for painting with oil and cold wax medium.
More recently Elizabeth had been following my posts on social media about my online Monotype Materials & Methods course and wanted to see how her tools would perform with gelplate printing. I was thrilled when she got in touch and asked if I would review a selection of her tools.
Elizabeth is known for creating fabulous tools for artists. Her brushes and tools can be use with a wide range of media. I was particularly interested in seeing how the silicone blade tools work with gel plate and acrylic paint. Although suitable for any wet media Elizabeth uses them for encaustic monotype and creates these spectacular patterns

I’ve had the great pleasure of taking several of Elizabeth’s encaustic & toolmaking workshops here in Texas! I also own many tools she’s created - using them on both the hotbox for encaustic and on the Gelli plate…she’s also custom made several tools for me (one from horsehair that belonged to a dear friends favorite horse and 2 silicone tools made from antique nail buffers!)…Elizabeth is so creative, knowledgeable of mark making and if you ever have an opportunity to take one of her workshops I promise it will be one you come away from with a wealth of knowledge & creative ideas!
