Hi Sally. I have been following your videoes and got so much out of them🥀😊 Thank you for posting. Recently I discovered, that I have developed a great sesitivity to acrylic mediums and get really sick when using them. Do you know of any other glue/medium/substance that can make tissue paper transparent/see through so I can used it in collage making ibteresting layers? Kind regards Nina

Hi, so sorry to hear that. Unfortunately it would need to be something that did not 'leak' when you use it for collage and only acrylic polymer stays waterproof . I have explored embedding tissues in cold wax medium, the wax soaks in and provides translucency but the cold wax medium contains solvent and if you are sensitive to products that may be a problem. Have you tried different brands of gloss medium? It may be there is something in one you have used that isn't in the others. I know I had some cheap gesso once that smelt so strong I couldn't use it. When you say 'acrylic mediums' do you mean all of them? Some contain bleach, others like matte medium contain marble dust etc. It may be the additions you are sensitive too rather than the acrylic polymer.. Golden Gloss Medium and their GAC100 are pure polymer, nothing added. Failing that, explore adhesives used by conservationists, they tend to be inert for conservation reasons. I do mix my gloss medium with Methyl Cellulose paste for collage, that would work for this method too, it's using less gloss medium, as long as its 60% medium to 40% MC.. Methyl Cellulose is an inert product, don't use wallpaper paste it contains fungicide. If its the polymer that is the problem obviously there is acrylic polymers in tube paint so I would avoid those as well. What glue are you using for collage?

@@sallyhirstartisttutor6324 Hi Sally. Thanks for your answer. 😊🥀 For collage I have been using Golden gloss medium (that seems to be the worst for me) but also their matte medium. I have been in contact with Golden and they confirm that there is a higher percentage of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in their mediums compaired to their . I have also tried Liquitex mat gel and Galeria mat medium. And I get headaches, nausea, dizziness and heavy breathing from all of them. I am pretty sure it is the high concentration of VOCs in the mediums I react to. I have been experimenting with wallpaper paste (the kind you buy and mix up yourself) and it glues down papers fine but does not make the tissue transparent. But I didn't react to that (do a potential fungicide in wall paper paste damage the paper/artwork?) I will also try methyl cellulose, but the one I got does not make a clear paste, rather a beige one. I am experimenting with homemade rice glue, but the rice flour I got from the supermarket here in Denmark was not fine enough, so it became somewhat gritty. It glued paper down ok, but didn't make the tissue transparent. I am using wet strength tissue paper by the way. I might have to get premixed Nori paste instead. I can still paint with acrylic paints as long as I don't do too long at a time. Maybe the solution of mixing the gloss or matte medium with methyl cellulose could make it workable for me. I will have to try it out. 🥀 Nina

Hi Sally. Thanks for your great videos😊🥀 Unfortunately it turns out that I get really sick from using the acrylic mediums. I wonder if you know of an alternative glue that will make the tissue paper transparent/translucent when glued down? Best, Nina

The artist Jacki Bernardi recently did an experiment with papers just like this but also had physician's paper in the experiment. She found it becomes transparent when you wet it with water before laying it down on gloss medium and then covering it with gloss medium. You can later go over it with mat medium to stop the shine.

FYI Bristol board, also known as Bristol paper, originated in Bristol, England around 1800. It's named after Frederick Hervey, the 4th Earl of Bristol, who was an art collector and associated with visiting cards and the fine arts. Early Bristol boards were often made by local stationers.

But not enough pressure for collagraphy. The rubber rollers absorb the pressure. The larger Suzzix is a better build.

@@sallyhirstartisttutor6324 I know we should not be picky of disparaging of other artists, but still...heck, I wish to say I am sorry for the last part of my original comment. But once said it cannot be taken back. I guess why I am a bit touchy, is that my degree is in Lit with a minor in World Myth. Often when artists who have an advanced degree in their field of their workshops, know this, they often are condescending to me. That was amazing for a beginner who would like to try printmaking. Found the sizzix and the Bira got the best clear results what do you think⁉️🤩

Couldn't really notice a difference between them. Any difference was my inking rather that the press. ☺

Thank you Sally do you think this mix could be used on canvas as a ground for watercolours, instead of using watercolor ground

This is so helpful! I have been using Open Medium with my heavy body but may not be using enough. Are you cleaning the plates with a baby wipe or cloth dipped in soapy water? I have such a hard time cleaning my plates. Enough using Open Medium. Thanks!

I try to 'print off' any excess paint, but occasionally use babywipes. Baby oil gets stubborn paint off.
