- The Worst Watch To Service ? Vintage Watch Accuracy ? - Talking To A Master Watchmaker !
In today's episode of Federico Talks Watches I talk to my master watchmaker Hansy and I ask him certain questions. How accurate can a vintage watch be? What is the most annoying watch movement to service? What does he think about silicone parts? All that and much more in todays episode.
Thank you Hansy for joining us!
Thanks for all the support!

Hansi is a treasure. Every episode with him becomes an instant classic. More please!
Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know of a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Vincenzo Genesis Instablaster :)
@Ian Grayson Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and im in the hacking process now.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Ian Grayson it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my account !
@Vincenzo Genesis glad I could help =)
You need to have Hansy on more!
Will do!
Hansi is a fantastic addition to your channel. More of this!
Seriously dude, you need to have Hansy a regular on this channel. This was so entertaining and informative. I wanted to hear more on every topic he talked about. Each question could have been an hour long video.
Thank you for watching. I made a commitment to be on the show with Don Federico. Maybe the next time my wife will also sit in. I thought her watchmaking and she worked in my shop for 17 years.
Hans is The Man - love his insights
Wow, mr. Hans is very interesting and charismatic person who has and a lot of knowledge about watches and share it to your viewers. Definitely one very inteligent and humorous person. Love to watch him!
"What do you want guys?"
Whatever! I could listen to Hansy for hours!
Thank you for watching.
Make more episodes with this guy. He is very cool. Question for the master watchmaker : what would be the maximum life span for a watch? If I buy a brand new rolex today and service it every 5 years at an authorized rolex location could it last 100 years? (assuming I’m still around then)
In the video he basically answered that question he said yes even a caliber 11
Great interview Fed, Hansie is not only knowledgable as hell he's funny and a good screen presence as well. Loved how blunt he was about Si, might be cool to hear his opinion on Seiko Spring Drive and some of the newer Vacheron movements (4400 etc.) in a future vid.
We will bring that up for sure in the next episode. I was the Technical Director of Vacheron Constantin USA for many years.
Great to see Hans again. He seems to be a very interesting person, and very confident in the watchmaking field. Glad he worked on one of my watches. Will get more in the future. Fed, make him get on camera more. 👍🍻
Hans is amazing!!!! Please have him on regularly!!!! He reminds me so much of my local watch repair guy: he cuts through the marketing and glorifying BS of the watch industry and just speaks truth about those little machines that tell time. I think an occasional vid of Hans working on a movement would be really interesting, too.
Dynamic Poisoning hahaha. I spent a while on Google searching that. Its Dynamic poising for those of you who want to do more reading on it. Good to see Hansy on again!
Hahahahaha got me there.
Yeah even Federico started saying poisoning for a brief moment xD Great video, love this series!
Great video! The ETA/Selitta/Seagull discussion was especially enlightening. On silicon, my watchmaker has the same opinion, it is extremely brittle and not worth it.
Fantastic show with great format. Hans opinion on seiko 4r and 6r movement's would be very interesting to so many of us. Great to know he is available to us and Del Ray. His opinion on sellita vs eta in itself was a true pearl. Thank you both. 👍
Man I love Hans. He consistently makes me laugh, what a legend, what a mind.
Very very interesting. Handzie knows his stuff it will be good to know who learns the most when he does go to Zenith. Love love love the idea of watching him work on a movement too. Great Q and A glad I don't own a Monaco! 😆
Hahahaha. Thanks for watching Mark!
Federico Talks Watches we need him back when he gets back from Zenith with an update!
Great content! Since he loves el primero, you should make an episode with service, or show some of its weak spots? Or how to inspect a movement before a purchase? Cheers
I'd love to hear more about the pros and cons and quirks of different movement; most robust vintage movement, most accurate (or inaccurate) vintage movement, spare parts situation for different movements etc.
More shows with Hans please! Very informative and I like the fact he doesn’t pull his punches👍🏼
Man that was awesome
You gotta get him on more often, he’s is great!!!
So much respect for Hans. Hopefully guys like him will inspire a new generation of future master watchmakers.
Great video, I could listen to Hansy all day.
I want to go get a cup of coffee with this guy and just listen to him talk about his passion
Would be cool to hear his (and your) opinions on regional differences for watchmaking, like from Japan to Germany to Switzerland. Maybe how the philosophy or technology differentiate between them.
Another thing that could be cool is if you picked some crazy obscure complicated watches and had him guess the retail price based on the functions of the watch, that could be a fun game!
Or maybe which movements solved problems in a creative or innovative way and which movements attempted to fix a problem but ultimately failed
These are my favorite of your videos, simple but great!
From the three you mentioned I like the Swiss style the best. German watchmaking has a different aesthetic to it. Japan is pure straight to the point but also precisely made like the others without much decoration. I like my own creations the best. LOL
What a spectacular way to start the weekend, watch talk with Fed and Hansy!! This is a very unique value prop you're offering to the watch community Fed, professional insights from the retail side (you) and the science/mechanics of watches (the great Hansy). Please keep doing these my man, these episodes clearly show you are the most credible and knowledgeable UA-cam watch channel available, hands down.
Thank you for watching.
Great video Fed as ever - loved hearing Hans’ knowledgeable opinion on the El Primero ( Hans is a legend have him in more please ) an iconic watch / movement to be sure - question is I’m thinking of buying a new one for my 50th ... but now I’m not so sure - when did Zenith start putting silicon parts into the mechanism ? I’m thinking now I should buy older to avoid the silicon parts ? ( as they are brittle and ultimately can break ...) I love the watch but want to make sure I get the correct model and avoid heartache down the line...would appreciate your comments
He is so refreshing honest and straightforward. I really like him, nice pairing Fed!!
Can't wait for the next video with Hansy, let it be soon please :)
Good one Hanz and Frederico! Maybe Hanz could show us some movements and compare them for us !
Fed your videos are *always* great but this one was AWESOME - hilarious, fascinating, and educational. Thank you.
Dang I might have to get a watch movement photo blown up like the background man, that looks awesome.
Justin Soong yeah Fed where did you get that??
Hansi was a breath of fresh air. Appreciate his no BS approach.
Any content with Hans is a pleasure and a joy. Amazingly interesting!
I was wondering how Hans sees watches which are priced so high (Richard Mille, etc.) which, even not even rarity or materials can justify. Does he like any of these brands in particular, all of them? If he was given $100k + to spend on a watch (not his own), what would he buy??
Also, what is his favorite dive watch??????
Never liked Richard Mille but when I was the Technical Director of Vacheron COnstantin I was exposed on a regular base to million dollar watches. The Kallista then sold for 14 Million US Dollars
love this!!! ive always loved watches, love hearing from experts who also care so much!
Your videos with Hansy are my favorite ones!
I really enjoyed listening to Hansy's take on watchmaking! Great video Federico.
Aww poo pooing Sellita! I have SW200 in an Oris Classic Date from 2006 which has been incredibly reliable, only the printing on the dial says 25 jewels (ETA 2824) instead of 26, it's quaint, loving these interviews! Cheers AC
Thx for bringing this fine gentleman in Fed
Please, keep up these videos with Hansi! ;-)
More of Hans pls. Bashing the cal.11 awesome!
Great video - very informative. Would love to learn more from him.
Great video Fed, as always. Enjoyed Hans' insights, have him on more often. Constructive comment - you should invest in mics (Jory has done this, sounds much better) to improve the audio. Maybe a future video Hans could discuss common repair issues with certain types of watches, ie Rolex GMT Master, Omega Speedmaster, etc. Could be done as a series? Thanks
Will do. Thanks for watching.
I would love to see a video on Hansy’s watch collection.
I don't collect third party products. All I have is my own production like. Unique pieces I made over the years. Thanks for watching.
Love this segment , Haansey is knowledgeable , funny and smart imo keep it up Fed! 😘
We hope to have him back on very soon.
Fantastic Show
Please feature Hansen more!!!
Here is what I would like to know:
Are watch winders ok to use?
When traveling, do the the X-ray machines magnetize mechanical watches?
Thanks
Great Show!!!
Paris Pat no they don’t
Chris D
Thank you Sir
Fed excellent video you guys have a good dynamic. Maybe next time you bring on Hans you guys can talk about some of the smaller Independent brands that seem to be really popular in the entry level. It would be cool to see his take on what a brand like CW is doing with their in house movement. (Even if you don't care for them.)
Hans is pure gold! More!! Great advice on demagnitizing.
Thanks for watching.
Those videos with Hans are damn good! Keep them coming man!
Today I went to my watch maker to get a new crystal for my 1965 Omega Seamaster Cal. 565. Had it on the time-machine. Amplitude is very good and accuracy 3-4 sec a day. According to your video I am a lucky person :D Yeahiiiii :D
Great episode. Really enjoyed Hans on the episode.
Excellent discussion, good points on ETA/ Selitta.
Great vid Fed 👍 Great to hear the thoughts of such a skilled and equally cool guy! Appreciate the effort you put into the content. Best Regards from the UK!
Thank you sir! Glad you enjoyed it.
I’m binge watching you & Hans Fed! Thanks guys :-)
Questions for Hans. If it’s already answered, I will of course watch/like that video. Should automatic watches be kept on a winder or not and why? Thank you.
Cool vid 🖒🏼I spent 6 hours at my watchmaker's workshop the other day. Talking and annoyingly looking over his shoulder at him working. He personally hates servicing Daytona's and Royal Oak chronographs.
I like Hansi. "If you always brought the watch to me..."
I work as a machinist and I'd be very interestined in hearing anything about the manufacturing of watch movement components. One of the big reasons I originally became interested in mechanical watches was seeing videos of watch lathes on youtube when I was at the time operating an industrial lathe for work.
Great video Fed, awesome to hear the knowledge and opinions from a true master watchmaker especially about some of the current technology being pushed out from the big swiss brands, love the fact that Hansi tells it like it is👍
Hans is the man. If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it. Very true my friend.
Hans is really great. You should have him on more.
There's so much to learn from him!Cheers Hansy!
Excellent Interview Video..!!! You have a Tremendous resource in Hans, hope to see him again in the near term.
I found his take on Silicone quite interesting!!
Very interesting video with Hansy!Maybe you could do a close up video on the co - axial movement! Or a video on movements showcasing the difference say between a Omega movement and a Rolex movement for example!
Thank for the idea.
I think Hansie mangled 'Murphy's Law' when he meant (I think) 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Great video Fed.
Awesome Frederick and Hans...thank you for the video. Interesting info re silicone. Could you comment on this pls....is there a sweet spot between letting a watch run down and “relax” vs using a winder from time to time if like me (sorry if this sounds offensive) you have a few too many watches to wear in rotation? I am trying to understand where the balance is between the wearing down of the mechanism vs wear on the crown seals. Thanks
Properly maintained watches dont wear out during use. You have take my word on that one. Thanks for watching.
Thank you, now I am happy with -10 sec on a AP Royal Oak .... so chic that it does not care about good timekeeping:)
Let’s see Hans do some of his master stuff for the audience. I’d love to see a true master at work. Your Q & A vids with Hans are always very cool and a lot of fun Fed.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
We are planning to show DYNAMIC POISONING not poising in one of our next videos. Just don't call the cops. Hahahahahahah
This guy is amazing, and your conversations really work. Good content.
Hans looks like Jürgen Klopp :)
Great content, very educational, thumbs up!
Thanks for having Hans on.
Hans is a great guest! We want more!👍
Interesting.. Should make more series with him..
Btw regarding the silicon and many more anti magnetic materials / technology, I wonder what his views on someone who has a mechanical watch and using a train or mono rail transportation on daily basis. I wonder if he can explain what’s going on with the watch movement (escapement, transmission, or regulation) since the accuracy of the watch will be impacted and disturbed by the magnetic field..
Thanks for watching. The situation you describe is outside the magnetic threshold for watches. Only MRI machines will make mechanical watches erratic.
All of which goes to prove that the difference between engineering and collectibility can sometimes be measured in light years. Nice video chaps: well played.
Mic was unfortunate, but the conversation was gold.
Hans is enjoyable to listen to. More vids with Hans. 👍
Thank for watching.
I love it when Hanzy is on!!!
Would Hansy be interested in replacing the silicon parts on a defy watch? Is there an estimated time and price for this service?
Great video , missed you and Jory on your usual Thursday live chat
Hansy is awesome, more please. great channel Federico!
Always great to see Hans. What watch is he wearing in video?
Exclusively wearing my own creations. Thank you for watching. In this episode it was a Roman numerals GMT with a two tone mechanism.
More with Hansy please. I found this episode so interesting.
Thank you for watching.
Great show with good information. More of these, please. Thx
Something i will always appreciate is an opinionated person (rare nowadays) so. i enjoy this video very much, definitely one of my favourites in your channel, more Hans please.
This is your best video yet... ideas: “in the workshop with Hans” “how to with Hans”
Think I've been watching Hans videos for at least three hours now.
I know you don’t work on Grand Seiko, but what does Hans think about their movement design and execution?
What is the real option of using an ultrasonic cleaner with your watch or only bracelets?
Question for you: would you service "cheaper" watches? For example, an SNK809 or an SKX? I realize you might be able to buy a new replacement for the cost of servicing, but for sentimental reasons if someone wanted it fixed, would it be possible? Thanks
We would, but usually the cost of service would be significantly more than the cost of a new movement.
Hey Hans... wanted to know if you can use a ETA escapement in a el primero instead of its silicone one ?
Hansi is the Master.....watchmaker is just a nice addition to his titel ;) keep on rocking Hansi
Really like the episodes with him and a Hallo from Germany to Hansi!
Freut mich sehr. Noch einen tollen Tag.
MFZ Watchmaker danke - das wünsch ich auch und ein schönes Wochenende!
We all need hansy more please
So the cal 11 heuer is the most difficult. Is the zenith el primero an easy one?
Hans and Fed, i just ordered Daniels book , any suggestions on chapters that are a must???
Thanks guys
And well, catch you
In the next
One
Take
Care
Nice episode! Congrats!
Great Video! May be sending in my 7750 after watching this.
Having watched so many videos and seeing this video which is a year old, I definitely think Hansi should be there more often... my suggestion, do a video yourself, then have JohnP pn the 2nd one, and then with you, JohnP and Hansi.... try and make the last video longer with Q&A etc... It would be the most interesting 30 minutes of 2.5 minds ;) (sorry, no names)
Thanks for the very useful information.
Question... Do you only service watches or can you do a repair? I don't need the movement done, but my bezel spring is messed up. Marathon GSAR and the bezel will rotate clockwise.
Sooooooo Tudors new movement breaks easily? Planning to get a Pelagos and if the silicone parts break easily than that would be a deal breaker.
In my humble opinion SILICONE is not here to stay. It was a fade. And it is SCHEISSE.
MFZ Watchmaker hahahahahaha thats why my last watch purchase was a Glashutte Original.
What does Hans think of Grand Seiko in general, and is servicing Grand Seikos a chore or a joy?
Hans , i got to ask Peter. Speake-marine the question about Silicon , and he was diplomatic about his answer , but basically i think he did not like silicon, something along the line that “there is a. Time and place for silicon/ or ‘people over enthusiastic about silicon”. Maybe he said both...thx for the answer
