  • Another action packed week out here. A couple different bear encounters once again. One day at a time out here, as it can be easy to get distracted with all the sights and sounds that Mother Nature has to offer out here.
The abundance of growth in this region is evident throughout this video.
Watch me frolic with bears, solar panels, chainsaws and a variety of things that one needs to consider when trying to make it in these parts.
You'll certainly want to watch this one!
    Shawn

Don't apologise for talking on the video, we are enjoying the experience with you and I for one like the chat otherwise it is just an off-grid cabin build. This channel is different and we are all along for the ride. The more that bear comes into your space the more comfortable it will be. It is the predator, protect yourself and protect your space.

I don't know if you will read this comment or not, but first and foremost I love your channel and the adventure that you are on. Just a couple thoughts, as a lot of people have said that bear needs to be dealt with. That bear is testing you and the last thing you need is it coming up on you in the middle of work. You are far from help and medical. On medical, investing in an extreme, comprehensive medical kit with something like a Garmin inReach to get help if you need it. Yes expensive but could be a life saver. Lastly don't be afraid to accept the gifts or donations. I beg you, because this is now your "Job" if people want to help let them. All jobs come with some perks as you know and this is one of them from doing this. There is a huge difference from being one of them that beg for the donations versus someone who lets it happen organically. You are providing a service whether you feel that way or not. Again love your content and you are doing an awesome job.

Not an expert but I would encourage you to take care of that bear. If he is circling you, this is predatory. It seemed like he's testing you to see if he can catch you by surprise. I'm all for living in harmony with nature, including bears, but when they start getting brave and trying to test boundaries, eventually you have to push back.

Black bears rarely hunt. They're not scared to fight over food, but they suck at hunting. So it's probably not predatory. It's more likely that they can smell food and just trying to decide if it's worth the fight. The end result is the same, but maybe if he could store his food and dishes better so the bears can't smell it, or at least not as strongly, they would be less likely to be aggressive. Just a hunch. You never know with wild animals though, so best to be cautious.

The bears don't know that you cannot smell them. A resting bear creates a 'cloud' of scent that all animals can smell except people. So the bear automatically can assume you are challenging its space by merely approaching and entering their scent 'cloud'. You should probably get a liking for bear meat, before they decide to get a liking for you. edit: after watching more of the video you do not want a bear entering your camp. Period. Black bears will eat you. If the bear is not afraid of you and your camp it is a danger.

Shawn, another great video young man. Enjoy them so much. Love seeing what the days hold for you. So you didn't get a lot of construction done this episode....no problem. Life happens and we do what we got to do. I am in agreement with a lot of the other posters, I think that bear has been given plenty of warning, I don't like his no fear attitude. Take him and share the meat if you don't want it, you gotta watch out for #1.
I was thinking as I was watching that I really want to be a patreon to your channel. Not sure why you are against it, don't look at it as charity, it's your friends wanting to help you through giving. You give to us each week, and a lot of us are living a dream through your videos, please allow us to help you thrive. Then instead of worrying about gas and food, you can think about a larger chain saw, a new trimmer, larger solar bank or other tools to help clear that path. Nice Intro! When that bear reached his paw out and touched the firewood after you said "dont touch my firewood" had me laughing! That being said I would definetly make bear stew/sausage out of him and a nice rug/throw! The ones that keep coming back are the ones you really worry about especially early spring/late fall if they have any issues with food you know where they are coming first!. Really appreciate you spending the time it takes to work on your editing and stuff but I know while i appreciate it, your getting what you need to get done this season so that you can safely winter seems most important! You will have all winter to edit/upload as long as you have your setup safely prepared/stocked for a winter! Your editing/photo skills, camera presence is getting better each video and will continue to do so just out of stuff you learn along the way like anything! Thanks so much for documenting for those of us that are living vicariously through you even way down here in Florida.

Shawn, I have a suggestion that may help you to find the spring on your property.. Find the water runoff from your spring, start by walking or floating the river until you find water flowing from your property into the river, if its a creek then walk up the creek to find a flow into the creek, then follow that flow to hopefully find your spring or continue that process until hopefully it brings you to your spring..😅 Seems it would be easier to start off that way than trying to hack through the overgrowth, which you still may need to do. (And carry a marine grade air horn with you as you search, sounding it off every so often to scare bear or moose or other wild animals). May or may not land you at your spring. If the spring is on the side of the river you're living on now then try doing the same thing, & maybe follow that freshwater stream you show in the your next video #16, it may lead you to your spring. Then, if you do have to look through the overgrowth, wear a mosquito net hood, also there is copper dowsing or divining rods &/or certain types of wood branches you can use to find water.. Just some ideas. Wishing you the best in finding your spring! Love your channel! 😊 P.S. Your glasses look cool!

In regards to solar, I believe this is a Bluetti EB240. Good choice! So this one can take a max imput from solar of 500W. Your pannels are 210W. They give you 185W ... so great pannels. You can plug 2 pannels in parallel. You will get an input of +/- 400W/hour. Since the battery on that unit 2400 watt hours. Charging it in full sun is about 6 hours. You can only plug in anything that pulls 1000W or less (these older units are limited).
So, on a sunny day, during daylight. You can run something big for an hour or so... without impacting your max battery charge. Good time to charge 18-24V batteries. So I would plug a few batteries. You have about 1500 to 2000W available of sunlight that your bluetti onboard battery doesn't use. Plug everything at the same time; The Bluetti BMS will manage it all. Everything will be charge in a normal 10 hours of full daylight summer day. Just a suggestion to maximize what you have available 😊

Beaver dam tip: If you can get some ABS pipe sections, you can use them to drain the pond without the beaver stopping it. The key is making sure both ends of the pipe are below water as much as possible - beavers dam based on the sound of trickling water. Either by burying it in the dam, or making a siphon. If they can't find the leak, they'll eventually abandon the dam. You just have to get enough cross section (like 3-5 1.5" sections) to drain a dam that size. But it is a lot of work... you have to check on it a couple times a month. but otherwise you'll constantly be moving your trail/bridge as the dam gets higher.

📢Shawn, Please get a AIR HORN to scare the bears away. I've seen them work when shouting did NOT work. I posted this last week, not sure you saw it. Joel added to make sure the air horn is marine grade as they are even louder. Keep it with the bear spray & your gun & on you at all times. For bear spray to work they have to get fairly close which you would prefer not happen.. And you don't want to rely on just ammunition as it will be pricey. Also get some type of tool belt that will fit both the air horn & bear spray in, would be easy to always have on you. This is important Shawn. And definitely going to need to put down the bear that keeps coming on your property before he puts you down!! I heard spring black bear can have a sweet taste to the meat & if you still don't like the taste then make sausage with lots of spices in it or give it away but I definitely for see you needing to put down bear at some point, plus they are over populated, however the air WILL help you scare them away!! I'm going to keep posting this message until I know you've seen it. 😉
P.S. Make sure you post a P.O. Box address for the followers that want to gift you tools & supplies, don't let pride stop you, we're your friends! 🥰

Yeah you're right you need to get a marine grade air horn to scare the bears away where Bells when you're walking through the bush and if you're using bear spray my suggestion is that the big can that shoots at a farther but it means that you got a damn close to the bear like I said in my past post I always carry out auto loading shotgun we have number fours two of them and then a slug now my shotgun doesn't have a plug so I can load six rounds so I load it to number fours and then slugs because if I have to kill a bear I just have to till it but the first two shots are just scare the bear away because I don't want to have to kill the bear. I had an experience where I was hunting squirrels up in the Northern British Columbia at my cousin's place and I didn't see the bear until it was almost on me and it was my over and under I was carrying but I had sevens shot and I was lucky that it was a young bear it was an older bear he would have just wore me to pieces that's why if I've been very territory I carry my auto loader just to be on the safe side. The other thing you can do but I've done camping in really heavy bird territory just get the hottest peppers you can get your hands on wrap them in bacon and set them out on the trail actually it's bacon and aluminum foil so the bear can't just spit it out that's one thing we used to do is also take old paint spray cans that I still have 75% of the pain in them that we don't use anymore wrap bacon and tin foil around it and the Bears would fight on that thing of paint and get out mouth full of exploding paint and a bear would never come back they learn to do learn pretty good and the other thing that works pretty good because Bears use their nose is crushed hot peppers and they sell them in huge bags you can get them on eBay and other places like 5 lb bag of crushed red pepper with the seeds in them and spreading that out around your place and when the Bears take a big sniff of that it gets into their nose and really messes them up they don't like it

Shawn, I realize you are a city guy. The bear did not "come by to say hi", and telling it not to touch your firewood will not work. These are wild apex predators, they are not dogs. For your protection you have to be firm. A dog or two would be of great value. These bears MUST be harassed EVERY time they come to your property until they associate you as a danger. Ensure your rifle is always fully loaded and close by. You can try spraying pepper spray around your property, but it will need to be applied almost daily. It's easy to let your guard down, but that's when Murphys Law occurs, just like your camera batteries. Possibly a small smoldering fire with green branches will create enough smoke to keep them away. Bears hate fire. Smoke is a good deterrent. Cooking smoke however is an attractant. I admire your gumption. Keep up the hard work. It will pay off. Remember you have about 100 days until the snow... Be safe and good luck. You're doing OK. 👌👍

@@cm-oo1td He's already fired the rifle in it's direction, fire crackers probably won't do much. A bear bell could come in handy, though its irritating to hear all the time, it should keep bears away. Also bear spray and I take a small "personal" alarm for sound if needed too.
The one shot of the beaver pond and possible dam showed its not likely a recent build, especially if greenery is growing on the dam. It could be multigenerational or abandoned. Good to test by taking a small amount away to drain the top few inches and see if its re-dammed within a few days. If not, then good to remove a bigger chunk and drain it. Otherwise it will be tough to constantly manage with live beavers. Please also keep in mind the kits are still being born till end of the month, so draining the pond could impact them in the lodge and expose them to predators.

I came across your channel just yesterday. Being a fellow Canadian I thought I'd follow along.
Regarding the bear(s), please see my comment from your previous(?) video. In the meantime, I would try using a sound that's out of place in the bear's environment: banging metal together? Maybe starting your chainsaw or string trimmer(?) or possibly you might cut some wood to baseball-sized pieces and throwing it at the bear(?)
Honda Power Products are ALWAYS worth the extra money because they just keep on going and going ... ! A former neighbour had his tracked snowblower for over 27 years and it was still going strong (In Ottawa, when we were still getting plenty of snow!🤥
