This BEAR Won't Leave Me Alone / Is Living Wild on a YouTube INCOME Possible? (Ep14)

  • The most action packed video yet!
I have a bear encounter where neither one of us would back down.
A cow moose and her young calf stare doom in the face amidst the raging river. With blow down trees choking the river, the calf struggles for dear life.
Work on the homestead continues with no end in sight.
I'm scratching the surface here, seeing if it's possible to live in the British Columbia wilderness simply on the earnings from my UA-cam videos.
Fortunately, I was able to purchase a super remote 41 acre property in one of the wildest areas of British Columbia a few years ago. This stepping stone will allow me to attempt to make a living in a most bizarre modern manner (UA-cam income), while living a throwback life, mixed with some modern conveniences.
Time will tell if this gamble pays off, but it has been one heck of an adventure so far.
    - Shawn

I for one think you have a perfect blend/balance of talking-no-talking-talking. I like your videos just as they are... I very-much like the fact that you don't ruin your videos (like some UA-camrs do) adding in unnecessary, loud, obnoxious music. Those are the channels I stop watching. I like to hear what is occurring naturally. Don't need, nor want a Hollywood production. Just my opinion.

Shawn, I've seen AIR HORNS work to scare off bears when shouting did NOT work. It would save you on ammunition too. Try it out to see if it works on the bears in your area that haven't had human interaction. And I'd try Bear Spray too & keep them close by your gun at all times. Beautiful proprty!! And you can talk as much as you want, this is your UA-cam channel! You're doing a great job, love the channel!! 👍🏻👍🏻

Yes never apologize for the content you record or say. It’s your “movie” if you will of what you are doing in your life. If you want to share your thoughts or ask for advice show us your plan take us on adventure or to the store, then do it. If you’re honest with yourself and film what you would like and comfortable doing so the rest will fall in line.
I enjoy watching the build as well as struggles and adventures you have. If I could I would be doing the same thing. Or helping a friend out working on their place.

That dug out “bunker” looks to me like an older style cabin design where they partially bury it for insulation. I’m sure in its prime it would have been an easy cabin to keep warm. Other than a possibility of claustrophobia and lack of natural light from a single small window. If done right you wouldn’t realize it was buried.

I was a bee keeper and had to deal with bears when my hives were located in bear country. The one thing that worked well in keeping bears from tearing up my hives was an electric fence, powered by a 12v battery. In your case, the battery could maintain its charge via a solar panel. Just a thought. Great show!

Screw us... talk when you feel like it, go mute when it suits you-we'll adapt. I'd be interested to know what sort of quantity of balsam fir is around. Usually straight as it comes, easy to debark, and much lighter than spruce. Don't count them out if you build in whole log... they are plenty strong enough. As long as they don't go into the ground, and you have ample overhangs on hips and gables. Be nice when you get your 4x4 on site-I'll share an easy way of pulling the logs out of the woods, with a chain looped over the tow-bar, and two wheels at the other end, metal strapping to secure (you have the photos).

Time to invest in a old 303 army rifle . Once a bear finds good oil and any grease , barbecue smell , fish guts and oil, they will pay you a visit, even dig down into your out house. One of cottager had to dispose of a bear last week because he dumped fish oil and guts into his out house . Just burn everything when our family was camping out in the wilderness . Bear bangers are cheap next time you're at CT. Just know that they are REALLY loud, and you don't have time to cover your ears before they go off, so be prepared for that. I've only had to deal with one aggressive bear, and it ran, but not that far. *always* have 2-3 charges on you, so you can reload and reinforce the message. The second one usually convinces the bear that you're not worth it.

    • @maficstudios
      @maficstudios 24 дні тому +9

He probably buried the structure because it keeps it cooler in summer, warmer in winter, not affected by wind. Local insulation, and you have much less structure that a bear can take umbrage with. He did something right, for a wood structure underground to still be there after so long...

Thanks for the video ! I wonder if the previous resident of the "bunker" might have buried the cabin so the earth would be a heat sink. It might help to keep it warm through the winter and maybe even absorb the mid-day temperatures during warm summer periods. I know people in northern Minnesota who over the winter will pile snow several feet up the walls of their cabin as insulation. He said that it especially helps reduce the drafts and the chill under his floor.
BTW, I appreciate when you explain what you're thinking. Keep talking.

Hey, don't stress on the talking. I think you talking is what brings in viewers and is what will help to grow your channel into something that's self-sustaining. People come for blog type content, they want to know what's going on. If anything, talk just as much in videos to come, it's why people will hit the subscribe button. That bunker at the edge of the property is awesome. Insulated and really easy to heat in the winter with a stove and a minimal amount of wood. Maybe look to cleaning it out and maintaining it with a new window? It would be great for storage and/or if you ever had a tree come down on the cabin or whatever, like an ace in the hole. A cheap/old stove in there with enough wood to get you through a week and some tinned/dry food? Like an insurance policy in winter.

Ive never had any interaction with a Brown Bear or Grizzly but have been charged by a pissed off sow black bear when i walked up on her and her cubs in the dark. I was walking into my Elk hunting blind in New Mexico. Its a helpless feeling when you have a enraged sow popping her teeth and making nasty huffing sound in the dark! Looking forward to next weeks video!!!

We look forward to Thursdays to keep up with you and your struggles. It will all be worthwhile. What a fantastic place to live. Keep up the chat with the videos, we find it useful to hear your thoughts on what you are doing and what your plans are. The bear has to go, it has no fear.

So many edibles/herbals around you. You should pick up a book of PNW edibles. Might help you through the winter. Those fiddlehead ferns for example are edible.

Yes, I agree. Supplementing with wild organics can add variety and nutrients for free. Old school all the way - just look what our ancestors did.

The bunker is fascinating, I think it being covered in the ground would've been very warm in winter. It also makes it very difficult to see it, so that might've been the reason. It's still really interesting and the fact that it's still there says a lot about how well built it is. Wow.👍

I would consider the "Bunker" a Dugout. A dugout is fairly easy to build with logs and what's available. To deal with the meat look into a pressure canner and some jars. I've never canned bear but I've canned lots of venison.

I love the occasional 'talk' (info, thoughts, plans, observations), but most of all I love that there's no music over non-talking scenes so I can fully absorb the natural sounds of the area for full immersion. I think most commenters agree that we enjoy your vibe and balanced approach to this entire project and have our best wishes for you and what you create as we excitedly await every episode. Be safe, thankful, and enjoy what you have all around you. Absolutely amazing land. Looking forward to those trail cam photos soon. :>

Your video has an element of walking around and showing the greenery, showing an old time cabin, your bike, working on the cabin, and the bear🐻 .
That,in my opinion, is a great video.

Just keep doing what you’re doing in your videos! I like the raw nature and rough editing technique that you use. Stands out from the slick formatted and commercial style that is getting way too common. My wife agrees! She’s tired of the ones that have turned into commercial ads! Have a great week and stay safe!

Great content, you're doing what I wish I could do, I'm 55 with a old knee injury that I have a hard time on flat ground to get around. I love your down to earth, go get it attitude and you will do well with UA-cam. I'm also starting a UA-cam channel exploring BC with my truck and camper. Bears are always a concern, they are very curious animals. Having lived in a remote cabin most of my childhood, you just need to be always be aware of your surroundings. That bear in your area, could be part of his terriority and see's you as an intruder, hopefully he leaves you alone. Looking foreward to your next video.

Burying the building allows it to be cool in the hot summer months and warm in the cold winter months. It was just them being smart about building in terms of conserving resources like firewood.

Don't know if they sell them up your way, but maybe a shotgun & some bird bombs for the bear. You need to set up a buy me a coffee account. Become an Amazon associate & maybe have an Amazon wish list. also do some you tube shorts, will draw people to your channel. And can also have a P.O box where people can send stuff. Have to let people in the states know what they can't send up your way. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.
