Developing a spring on our land has been a top priority since day one, especially since we are off grid and still relying on a rusty old well drilled a long time ago, but we finally got around to it with some perfect conditions in the middle of winter ; ) Lou has been on the hunt for high-elevation springs for over a year, and the one he found has been a fountain of fresh water so far, so fingers crossed it continues that way year round! There appear to be 3 more springs in that area, so our hope is to develop all of them, funnel that water into a ram pump, and get a near-unlimited supply of gravity fed drinking water at the top of the mountain. If there are any experts in spring developing watching this video, please send us any notes/advice because we could use the input for future spring projects!!!
Big love,
Dana, Lou, Max & Freja

The sound of that running water is so peaceful
Thank you, Judy! It really is so peaceful... that is, until Max or Freja decide to splash haha! Big hugs ❤
Cliffhanger on the water test results... ! 😯
Hey Dana and Lou,
First off, i am dumbfounded everytime you start a new project, not simply because of the sheer will to take on such demanding tasks but also from your sense of creativity to think of new ways to improve your off the grid lifestyle. i started watching you way back when you did a tutorial on how to develop film at home ( i was 14) and kept up with you throughout all your changes and found myself growing alongside you. im in the middle of medical school and as demanding as it feels, somehow your courage makes it easier to find new ways to assess whatever comes my way and leaves room for excitement and hope for the future no matter how different our circumstances are. thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me push through and hold fast ❤
That is so awesome, Good Luck💚❤️
@@sgrvtl7183 thank you !!🫶
Woooow ❤ Thank you so much for taking the time to share that, my heart is so full reading your story!! We are beyond humbled to have made an impression like that :) We wish you all the very best with med school!! Sending lots of love and well wishes and hugs your way ❤
Well done Lou! Just another completely natural resource for your lovely family. ❤
Thank you Emma Morgan ❤ The spring really is some of nature's magic. Big hugs from all of us!
I think Freya was in her element with you! Also thank you for that running water sound & not playing music over it.....
So glad you liked the water sound, too! Nature makes her own music :) And haha yes Freja loves frolicking in the woods!! Big hugs ❤
This is exactly what I needed to see!!! Thank you for sharing. I have found springs but wasn’t sure what to do and what not to do. It looks just like yours!!!! ❤🎉😊 Our Shepherd even looks like yours. We’re in Kentucky, probably going to binge on your channel today. I’ve been raising babies/kids for 32 years yesterday, the land has been waiting for me to make the best of it. It’s finally time. 😅
Your user name is perfection 🤌
@@Hillside-Hive awe, thanks!!!
Aw that makes us so happy to hear, thank you!! Hope our content is helpful for you, and you enjoy all the wonders your land has to offer!! No time like the present :) Big hugs from our family to yours ❤
Wow. This made me realise how little I've thought about where water really comes from when its not provided by the city 😅 What a great project.
So exciting and so satisfying to see you filling the jugs of water up!!!!!! So impressed with all you all have accomplished. Can't wait for next weeks video
I love the German shepherd fur babies. Good job
Wow, Lou at work again. So talented my man! You are lucky ,yet bet it's harder to get used to at the same time.
The top spring during a drought will dry up first. Build down below. I could be wrong.
Thanks Lou, that was super interesting. Another task done to make your lives easier. ❤
Wow but also what. I think this is the first video that left me with so many questions 😅 i dont get it, where were you getting water so far? What was that dam you build supposed to do? Will you install filters or is it not necessary? I dont know anything about spring water obviously, but why was it good that it came from under a rock? 😂 and that long pipe.. is it not fragile to the outside factors? Is there any water leaking around the main pipe at the beginning and how did you capture it in the pipe? Will all the free flowing water that is left in another spot create a problem down the line? Anyway, im all up for a part two video with background information 🙏
Gotta love watching people struggle with unrolling poly pipe!!! There is a trick to it!!!
Great system of doing it i am currently using a 100year old developed spring
You are freaking brilliant. Love this channel. May the spirit of Christmas bring peace and joy to your heart.
Thank you so much, Anne! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, too ❤
Water 💦 is Life
Have you thought about getting a hydroelectric power kit to generate power from one or more of your springs or from the creek?
I just watched a "short" that showed these graphite/ composite filled, lightweight ecoblocks building a house. It was amazing & I thought of y'all!! You design it on the computer (yay Lou!!!) and it goes up quickly--framing, insulation, & inside walls all in one! Hope you will see this comment & maybe give you an idea--sponsoring help, too, maybe??
Your editing, videography, storytelling, music is just all so incredible. I’m instantly relaxed when I watch your videos. Y’all are my favorite channel. ❤
Aw Esther, thank you so much ❤ We are so happy to be a source of relaxation for you, that is so nice to hear. Big hugs from us!
Some type of filtration system would be nice idk anything about that but that came to mind while watching the video lol. Plz keep pumping out more videos like these I literally binged watch the container series after work which is so nice….
Love love love this video
Everything is so beautifully filmed and explained. Freya living her best life. Thank you
Haha she really is, she loves running around in the woods :) Thank you so much for the kind words, Alexandra! Big hugs from all of us ❤
Our creative living gurus 😊
That is definitely good news. A spring for drinking water. Good for you guys. Have a beautiful Merry Christmas!!!🎄🎁 Love and be safe!🤗😘❄️🇻🇪
Thanks so much, Monique! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, too ❤ Big hugs from all of us!
Huzzah Lou! Kudos ~ You are the hardest working Papa in the land. = ) ❤
Haha thanks so much!! So kind of you to say ❤
Beautiful video ❤
i always learn something new while watching your vids! love it :)
That makes us so happy to read :) Thanks for sharing and happy to be a little learning channel ❤
Amazing ❤
Such a good video. I strongly recommend you also do a mineral test for the water. Once is usually enough since the rock composition doesn't change much. Underground water takes salts and minerals from the ground it flows onto (before being stored underground) and depending on your area some minerals can be present in groundwater (such as arsenic, manganese, radon, uranium). And bacterial testing is recommended at least yearly for personal use
Thank you so much, appreciate that advice!! That definitely makes sense to look into. Wishing you a wonderful wintertime ❤
Beautiful! Well done you
Happy Holidays! 🎄
Amazing what you can do!
This is AMAZING
I was wondering, could you make a drone video showing us where the spring's beginning is and where the black hose by yr driveway ends. It's hard to otherwise imagine the distances...thank you...Greetings from New Zealand.
Three gallons a minute is impressive! Where is this at? Any tips for buying a land with a potential spring on it?
Joolca makes a nice variation of off grid hot showers ..,
I have so many questions. 😊 What sources did you study before beginning work on the spring. The leaf blower, I got three batteries, can’t wait to get out there. 🎉
Does that alter the flow of the larger creek that was further down the hill?
Congratulations❗️👌🌲
Wonderful resource! Have you considered doing a raised tank by the shipping containers? A practice that is used in Central Asia often.
That is a great idea for down the road! Thank you :)
Incredible! How do you plan to insulate the hose to prevent freezing?
I wonder if running water would freeze?
@@carrie3206waterfalls freeze largely if it is cold enough so I guess it can
If someone didn't have this knowledge, is there a type of professional to consult on how to select a property with ownership rights and access to resources like this and what sort of landscaping infrastructure and terraforming would be needed harness them efficiently and ecologically friendly? And also to guard against landslides?
This was awesome !!!. So if that creek runs year round, can you not set up hydro-electric? A friend of mine did that on a creek by his home, and it was producing excess power. The power company wound up buying the excess. How weird is that. But pretty cool.
That is really cool! Thanks for the idea, will keep that in mind :) ❤
Qt, what happens to the rest of nature that gets interrupted by your project? Hmmmm 🤔🤔 You know all the things that was feed by that spring. What affect will that have on the ecosystem?
Good questions
I'm wondering if there are ways to do that without plastic.
Just wondering, do you plan on getting water storage tanks?
What do you do if the pipe (or more accurately the water in it) freezes in the winter?
What is the name of the track playing at around minute 9:30? It's so beautiful!
Nice job!
May I ask, where do you do your laundry at?
If you break that down, that's 1.9 gallons per minute. 😮
Just wondering how you manage about sanitation at present, especially with a toddler. There is certainly a lot of washing of clothes etc with babies.
We have our compost bathrooms up here at our tiny home, but we are very lucky in that we can do clothing washes at my parents place nearby, too :)
Why not drill a well?
No more videos?
Good work but how do you unplug the head of the pipe? Should have built a box or buried a plastic 55gal drum at the head.
Well? Bacteria or no?
