    Hank is so humble and modest. He refuses to take credit for his accomplishments and contributions. He is, to a degree, self deprecating and he throws humour into the mix it as well.

    Hank makes it look supremely easy, but it's almost impossible to do it just like he does. A truly brilliant beautiful human being, with a musical talent like no other.

      Quite agree. You think you can pick up your guitar and bang out his tunes (it's hardly like you've got to play fast or tap etc etc 😅). Then you plug in, play the first few bars and realise you're a million miles away from coming close

    Hank is such an amazing technician. His tone and consistency is just so hard to replicate. And so many different tones. You couldn’t find more different songs than Apache and FBI - completely different tones, styles, genres and techniques, but you immediately think of him when you hear them, because he invented it all. British Rock - he was the genesis. He was the guitar sound that the Beatles, Stones tried to replicate. I mean, even in the 1970s, Jimmy Page’s jangly jagged playing can be traced back to Hank playing FBI. And all of that is why all guitarists still worship the ground he walks on

    Hank was not well known in the US, even though Cliff Richards was popular. But George Harrison put it best when he said "No Shadows, no Beatles". And by extension. No Stones,Zeppelin, Floyd, etc. I wish I had discovered Hank's music during b the 60s. Long live Hank Marvin!!

      Neil Young wrote a song "From Hank To Hendrix", and most people assumed it was referring to Hank Williams until he said in an interview it was Hank Marvin. He was a big fan when he was starting out.

Still plays in a Shadows cover band, still has a Fender Strat and a Burns, still tries to sound exactly like Marvin since when he were a kid.

      Well that goes for Cliff and cool Bruce too.
      In an interview Bruce Welch refers to health and mentions that the three of them have always been non smokers. So, as he said they'd have never thought of lighting up a spliff in the sixties.
      Worth pointing out that until a few years ago The Shadows could have fielded their original team years after so many other younger acts have all passed away.

    WOW this man is timeless - and an English Gentleman (lives here in Perth Western Australia) the instantly recognised guitar rifs and tunes written and played by men like this will never be repeated - Here are some names and ages that old people like me (50) may relate to and not realise where the years have gone - Bob Dylan (75) Carlos Santana (69) Don Henley (69) Neil Young (71) John Fogerty (71) Paul Simon & Art G. (75) Neil Diamond (75) - I saw this old man (Neil) in concert 3 yrs ago and I was blown away, what a legend. Mark Knofler (67) Mark is my personal alltime guitar/sing/writer legend. David Gilmore (70) Roger Waters (73) Willie Nelson (83) - (note: I will miss seeing Willie by a few hours in Belton TX in March business trip - would love to shake this mans hand/bucket list) Mike Oldfield (63) Mick Jagger & Keith Richards (73)..when Keith finally passes away in another 265 years time they will make guitar Zombie movies about him. Nobody reading this will still be alive when Keith dies. Jimmy Page (73) a small list of those legends that are still with us - Now some we have lost recently.... The original Gangsters first with respect - John Lee Hooker (88yo, 2001) & BB King (89yo, 2015) - then a shock, Gary Moore (58yo. 2011) Jimi Hendrix (27yo, 1970)...fame has destroyed many since in the same way. Karen Carpenter (32yo, 1983)...in my opinion the most beautiful voice I have ever heard...just so tragic. For us Aussies - I put this old Gentleman first for obvious reasons - Slim Dusty (76yo, 2003) Bon Scott (33yo, 1980) Greame Strachan (49yo, 2001-Shirl the Curl - Skyhooks) Jon English (66yo, 2016) Doc Neeson (67yo,2014) Ted Mulry (day before his 54th Bday, 2001) Marc Hunter - Dragon (44yo, 1998)...there are many more, these are ones that came to mind for me...

    Hank and the Shadows was the best clear cut sound around, groups who used those fuzz box gimmicks distorted their guitars to such a degree you couldn't identify what sort of guitar they were playing, It's amazing how many different sounds Hank could get out of one guitar, and he never made the guitar screech like some groups did to the point where it hurt your ears and you wanted to get away from it. another great guitarist is Mark Pnopfler of Dire Straits fame.
    You instinctively knew who they were by the sound of their guitars and playing style.

    Hank mentions at the start that the echo is a bit weird tonight.
    And it is, I assume that that's his amp behind him and it's atypical. It appears to be a Vox something that has been miked up.
    Could anyone suggest why the sound is as it is? Presumably it would be because of a supply? Technical issue? And relating to the longer session referred to.

    • @tabormorin4526
      @tabormorin4526 4 роки тому

      Vox AC30's weren't atypical for Hank; he was the guy who helped make it, of course. It looks like Hank's playing a JMI AC30, which is a bit different. This may cause his echo/reverb to sound a little different. Idk

    • @chrisst8922
      @chrisst8922 4 роки тому

      @@tabormorin4526 The JMI badging was the atypical part I meant.
      I don't know what technical differences there may be between that and a regular AC30 but when I saw them in 2004 only Bruce used his Vox so I assume that the JMI badging had something to do with Hank's use of it subsequently.

      I seem to remember that Neil Young was once on Jool's programme and whilst being intereviewed said that rather than watch an old clip of himself (off OGWT or whatever) he wanted to see a clip of The Shadows because he'd never seen them.
      So they wheeled out that film of them doing Atlantis to the film of FBI or something and we saw an insert of Neil's reaction.
      It was priceless, Young sat open mouthed and realising something was amiss Holland interupted the clip and Young uttered:
      ''They did a little dance!''
      The audience started to titter, yes it's The Shadows walk....obviously Neil Young didn't know about it or the high kicks etc, he'd expected the rock star thing and Jool's laughed it off.
      I'd love to see the film of that if it's avilaable.
