    The rules favouring larger frontages makes me a little bit worried about the impact to movement. If massive frontages (bearing in mind bigger bases) are the norm, then what will the concessions be to enable large frontages to get around the board in a "modern" way.

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Рік тому +5

      Good point! The large frontages can't wheel easily- although that might be part of the downside to balance the upside.
      Also- paired with the bigger bases - there's going to be less space on battleline if wide formations are the norm.
      It made clear what the advantage was of wide formations but not the penalty. It's going to have to be more than rank bonus, given the amount of casualties being removed. Maybe ranks counting double or triple or something

    Some interesting extrapolations on what GW told us with their release. I feel very similar to yourself with regards to magic in that I think there needs to be some sort of resource (and resource management) for it to really feel like Fantasy.
    As for the bases in the pictures I think you’re right about the trolls, they look like they’re still on 40’s. The War Alter though seems to be on a slightly wider base, I’d guess 60mm rather than 50, as currently it’s wheels hug the edges of the base on both sides. Same for the Steam Tank

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Рік тому +1

      A sharp spot!
      I quite agree. The more I think about it, the more I think the loss of base-to-base for fighting is a pretty big departure.

  • @_munkykok_

    Fair idea about the wizards, that they might go for automatic aura-effects, at the same time simplifying them and making them have an impact in multiple combat phases.
    So for example, depending on what aura effect you'd like, that's the kind of wizard you'd hire...
    Which basically removes any necessity for magic ressource management after the initial army list building, apart from managing the wizard's positioning and HP, obviously.
    Though at first, I was thinking they might work like regular shooting units/characters.
    As in, their positioning matters cause they need a line of sight at their target, plus it's simple: just cast a spell as you'd shoot an arrow from a bow.
    This wouldn't even necessitate any mana point management, same as you're not managing anyone's quiver. For example, they could just cast one spell per turn and that's it.
    And as long as it's your pick in which part of a turn you're casting it, it fits the 'freed up' / phase-less magic narrative, too.
    Anyway, nice video / speculating. 👍

I stopped playing warhammer way back in 3rd Edition, I and my Vast 20,000 pt Dwarf army decided that 3rd edition was already too modern. Now that my beard is both very long, and very grey, the wisdom that it has brought me leads me to admit that I may have been somewhat.. Hasty.

      You might be wiser than me. Everything I have read about third ed (the core rules, army book, and realm of chaos) convinces me that, looked at from a certain (compelling) perspective, it was the real golden age- a time when MODERNISATION was not a term bandied about and a time where I might have worn my sunglasses throughout the entire game!

      I was able to buy all of the rule books over the years, and there’s something beautiful about those games, but they are very different from what we know as Warhammer from 4th to 8th edition.
      It’s fun to play, absolutely, but the structure of 4th through 6th is much better. Especially 6th.

    I always felt that some of the second and third ranks should have only been able to fight are those with certain weapons, cause as I'm sure you imagine it's hard to poke a shortsword over 4 ranks of guys in front of you.

    • @Lassemalten
      @Lassemalten Рік тому

      yeah if we have to think that they acctually hold a line against each other like some greek pikemen or well discplined romans. 2 units charging each other should mix up several ranks into the fight

      Nice point and I quite agree. There has been a little of that in the rules with spears and (in earlier editions) pikes, but those buffs were pretty small really.
      Spears and pikes also granting an initiative bonus against chargers would also be cool.

    Looking at the differences between new Heresy and old Heresy (and their differences from modern 40k) might be a good start to getting an idea of the rules direction for Old World, since I'm guessing it's likely the same people working on both games. The psychic phase and dice pools got ditched in favour of a simpler magic system using powers a bit more akin to weapons or wargear. Morale changed substantially as well. Weapon skill changed significantly punishing weaker units. I think it's useful to think about the purpose of the product, to me Heresy and TOW are mostly about monetizing nostalgia - something to sell to us jaded middle aged folks who want something a bit more like what we remember playing as kids. It seems to be working for them!

  • @owb1979
    @owb1979 Рік тому

    I would not be surprised if the units are a lot smaller in the Old world anyway. There is no way they will want to go back to the meta of massive blocks of infantry which are dull to paint and impossible to move over hills.

    I hope breaking get a more variose outcome. For example you have a high LD of 9 and you roll 10. That suxs. Then it's just 1p over so they just do a withdraw. But if your LD is 7 and you roll 10-11 then they flee.

  • @Svengar
    @Svengar Рік тому +3

    Very entertaining video. The push and pull could be good but there must be the option of breaking completely particularly as the immune to psychology type troops would be a bit wasted otherwise. The lack of a set magic phase does sound a little odd but could still be totally fine depending on the details. The whole front rank being able to attack does sound like a lot of dice being rolled and I hope it doesn’t just lead to all horde units. Cavalry units in particular will need some sort of offset otherwise they will just be obliterated
    Just as a side note I would tend to agree that some of the very best miniatures ever produced were those from the 80’s and early 90’s. I’m very glad I have a decent enough collection of the old metal sculpts not to say that there weren’t some awesome plastic kits too (skeletons being one of my favourite)

    Thank you Dr Blaxill for another interesting review video of TOW. I really appreciate your view on things, being another reactionary grumpy grognard, although I think I have a pretty different point of view to you being someone who loves 6th ed and a more narrative play style. I also prefer models from around 94 to 2004 compared to anything else, although I certainly agree that the 80s models are light years ahead of anything GW has put out since around 2006.
    Coming from the point of view of loving 6th and 4/5th eds, I can’t say I'm toi happy witj what they have announced about the rules so far, but I'll certainly give it a chance and I absolutely buy older rereleased models like those absolutely classic metal slayers shown in one of the pictures in the article!

  • @Stonehorn
    @Stonehorn Рік тому

    In 8th, every time your opponent says “I’m rolling six dice” in the magic phase, you know there is a 20% chance the game is over. We had to FAQ Purple Sun of Xereus in our group because it just became a feel bad mechanic. Otherwise I agree the magic systems throughout Warhammer have been fantastic (and the destruction of 40k’s magic, i.e. Litanies and Warp Powers is what truly turned me off of 10th edition).
    I hope we have winds of magic again but the player gets to use it throughout the phases, as magic seems to be a 4 phase ordeal with spells that affect each of them. I think it’s a change that isn’t bad at all, if they do it correctly.
    For me, 6ed is the Holy Grail of editions, it’s the most fun to play, but still hard to find a game.
    I started with the 4th Ed. box set, my friend and I were 12, and we split firewood to afford two box sets, trading halfs (purposely misspelled in honour of the noble Dwarf’s) all summer and fall of 1992. We also raised enough to mail order a couple of heroes and special units. Being country kids, we didn’t have a local game store, just the often unreliable Canada Post (they are much better today).
    The only reason we even learned of warhammer was an article in a role playing magazine we subscribed to. Magazine subscriptions, remember that?
    I still play WFB with that same friend thirty-one years later. We have a lot more armies now. I just wish I saw him more than a few times a year.
    I didn’t mean to ramble when I started this post, but I’m extremely glad I did. It was a nice dose of nostalgia and yearning for better days that at the age of 43, I know are gone forever.

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Рік тому

      Ah well, nostalgia is an extremely powerful force in wargaming. Model soldiers are somehow inherently sentimental. Perhaps because they are in certain respects a toy that both kids and adults are allowed to like- and the years flash past in seconds. With these videos I sound quite 'current'. but in reality warhammer is also a nostalgia trip to the 12 year old me 🙂

  • @never_wrong
    @never_wrong Рік тому +1

    I enjoy hearing everyone's opinion on models except from the shills, and almost everyone thinks the new models are bland. The bsb's flag is thicker than the massive horse's legs.
    If you don't enjoy the new models, the only option is to bitch and moan till something happens. It worked for the old world, New Coke, and classic world of warcraft/runescape. This is why the first amendment is the freedom of speech.

  • @BlaueCookieFan
    @BlaueCookieFan Рік тому +1

    Hmmm encouraging wide frontage units? Not the best of ideas mechanically, but historically you rarely saw very narrow frontages in battles, did you? An interesting choice, let's see how it works out...IF they actually release The Old World for real, that is. I am interested in seeing how they handle chaos warriors and beastmen. Lookwise those have changed very, very little since the old Slambo 2nd/3rd edition days (beastmen a little later than that, say beginning of 4th edition). What will they come up with to prevent people using the Age of Sigmar models in The Old World?

  • @markbedwell3100
    @markbedwell3100 Рік тому

    I would imagine if we see whole units being able to attack, that’s models with multiple attacks will be rare. Isn’t the that kinda like kings of war?
    I suspect the breaking in combat might be changed so you just take a standard break test or be pushed back like in 3rd. The mortal wounds thing instead of breaktests with push back does sound likely
    The newer editions of 40k don’t give me much hope for rules design.
    I’m not keen in the changes to wizards, it sound likes it going to just be an ability you use in a phase.

    When they said "reminding ourselves of rules that in some cases we hadn’t played for decades" it made me laugh, like 7/8th edition !? well can I interpret it like most of the team never play WFB ? Funny enough the beginning of the paragraph "For several months the designers regularly assembled" make me scratch my head... the Old World was announced in 2019... 4 years ago. Do we need to understand they just started to think of the rules in 2023 ? I'm more and more worried because of the handling of Horus Heresy (they don't care... still missing basic troops type , who said assault troops ?) and already jumping on Epic scales (funny enough they showed assault troops). Like for 40k with IMO a V10 launch fiasco, I'll go back to the old ones 3rd, 4th or 6th and play 9th age for competition.

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Рік тому +3

      Yes the wording of that deserved more viscious lampooning from me. 'Reminding ourselves'
      'Regularly assembled'
      Lol!
      Sounds like a backwater committee that is designed to spend years 'investigating' a policy proposal that is never designed to occur.
      Indeed- telling us (to great fanfare) they have started meeting to remember the rules 4 years in - somewhat amusing!

      GW no longer crediting their creatives in the books (nor most other opportunities) makes things needlessly murky, but we do know that TOW is at least in part the last hurrah of the last remaining OG Warhammer folks and led by people heavily involved with WFB6~WFB8.
      And they give no date for when exactly they did anything. Obviously, they aren't blogging about what they did just recently, but referring to the bulk of development process from 2019 to 2022.

  • @kerel995

  • @TheFGS
    @TheFGS Рік тому +2

    The only thing im happy for, is the chance to buy fantasy miniatures again. Ive got no trust in GW to be able to make a good ruleset here in "the modern times"..
    They have proved it time and time again , both with AoS and 40K that they are incapable of making a good ruleset.
    Of course I may be biased as I tend to compare the "times now" with the "golden age of Warhammer" and the people who wrote the "old editions" of warhammer.
    The fact that base sizes are different , - limiting the possibilities of playing in other editions, already shows that the people currently working at GW and developing this "old world", have got no clue or respect for the Fantasy universe. Instead they want to make "their own" edition that "apparently because of basesizes" cannot be played in all the older editions..
    I realise that we can just use movementtrays with larger footprints, but just the fact that we have to invest money and time into doing so, feels like something that havnt been thought through.
    Every model should be playable in "all editions" (like its been in all other editions) and if GW like to use "bigger bases", then release all the newer minis with larger bases..
    "Piling in" rules, in combat, Casting spells in every phases and basically just simplifying this edition, dosnt appeal to me at all.
    Warhammer Fantasy was never meant to be "simple".. It was a game that took time to play, and time to know, and the big rulebook was "the bible " we tried to memorize.. A game for "intelligent and patient people"..and to the ones who wanted to dedicate themselves to a Hobby.
    Now it seems like they just want to make a game for the dumb or the people who havnt got any patience .. But perhaps thats where we are at, as a society now?
    I may be wrong on all ive said, but I have a feeling im not...
    Anyways thx for posting Dr Luke

      @@twincast2005 I'll assume you're right about what's realistic, but I guess I'd still say I think bigger horses look better. Particularly for elite units or anything Chaos-y. There's just something "dinky" to me about older mounted units. Maybe it has something to do with posing too.

      @@wakephillips I do agree that Chaos Knights, due to being considerably larger themselves, should also have considerably larger steeds. Anyway, those poses are perfectly accurate as well. If you want to see actually "dinky" horsies, I encourage you to look up 1st through 3rd edition.

    I came back to the hobby about a month or two before The Old World was announced.. And stayed positive and hyped, until now.. Now I feel more, indifferent. I don´t trust GW being able to bring a fun and playable Warhammer back.. Sadly.
    6th Ed was my edition though, I played through all of it, having watched both 4th Ed and 5th Ed while playing 49k. 7th Ed was a disaster though.. Stupid new rules and a horrible power creep with the army books.. Never played 8th Ed back in the day.. But I do like it more than 7th Ed, now. Heck, I rather just have thta... Thing back over what this new thing seems to bring..
    If GW decided to bring back WHFB - they should bring back WHFB, not some dumbed down thing with changes just because the heck of it. The magic phase was one of the highlights and it seems we don´t even get that mini game but some stupid thing like various Farty K editions have had..
    Nah.. Seems like a Turkey this thing.. I am glad for the models I "need" coming back but the rules have to be good for me to leave 6th Ed - a popular edition, the high mark of WHFB.. Heck, I rather play WAP with those here doing it. GW can stuff this joke.
