Tropic Thunder is a 2008 action comedy film directed by Ben Stiller, who wrote the screenplay with Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen. The film stars Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel, and Brandon T. Jackson as a group of prima donna actors making a Vietnam War film. When their frustrated director (Steve Coogan) drops them in the middle of a jungle, they are forced to rely on their acting skills to survive the real action and danger. Tropic Thunder parodies many famous war films, specifically those based on the Vietnam W*r. The ensemble cast includes Tom Cruise, Nick Nolte, Danny McBride, Matthew McConaughey, and Bill Hader.
Stiller developed Tropic Thunder's premise during the production of Empire of the Sun in the spring of 1987, and later enlisted Theroux and Cohen to complete a script. The film was green-lit in 2006 and produced by Stuart Cornfeld, Stiller, and Eric McLeod for Red Hour Productions and DreamWorks Pictures as an international coproduction between the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Filming took place in 2007 on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i over thirteen weeks and was the largest film production in the island's history. The extensive marketing campaign included faux websites for three of the main characters and their fictional films, a fictional television special, and selling the energy drink advertised in the film, "Bo*ty Sweat".
Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks released Tropic Thunder in the United States on August 13, 2008. It received generally positive reviews for its characters, story, faux trailers, and cast performances. However, the depiction of the mentally handicapped and use of blackface makeup attracted controversy. The film opened at the top of the American box office and retained the number-one position for three consecutive weeks, ultimately grossing more than $195 million worldwide before its release on home media on November 18, 2008. Downey was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, while both he and Cruise received nominations for a Golden Globe Award.

Can’t believe you didn’t let us see Tom Cruise dance! 😎 haha
Blades of Glory is the same type of movie 💯🤣
You need to watch Dewey Cox. Probably the funniest movie ever made that hardly anyone has seen
Dude... you have to watch the entire movie to appreciate it... can't watch these clips.
@@bingram2011 THE WHOLE MOVIE WAS WATCHED. THESE ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS. I DO NOT OWN THE MOVIE I CAN NOT POST THE WHOLE MOVIE
I think “what do you mean ‘you people?’” is one of the greatest gags ever put in a move
No it's the _Satirical_ *"genuine"* black-face that actually allows that gag to even exist in the first place.
Gonna have to agree. The "HUH!?" afterwards just sets it off. "I'm a lead farmer mf" is definitely a close second for me though.
Uh uh. For me it's "I'm a dude, playing a dude, playing another dude!"
@@drax1526I think you're confused.
"God damn it! We lost! We fuckin major lost!" is the greatest line in movie history.
I'm a rooster illusion
"Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary."
Fun Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary in the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses.
Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. Johnny and Luther Htoo were fond of American action movie heroes, especially the Rambo franchise.
Cruise Unbound Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.
My all time favorite commentary on a movie. He's the GOAT. 😂 and OMG Les Grossman.
yes, the initial conditions of him playing the role was, he had to dance and have big hands.
@@Shiirow He must have based that character on someone he worked with in real life. It's so authentic somehow. I love that performance. Shoutout to Tom Cruise for doing so much with so little. 😂
@@dancewalkertarot it has been reported that Joel Silver was furious when he saw it, and hasn't spoken to Cruise since.
Stiller and Cruise have been friends since Stiller played Cruise's stunt double in a comedy sketch. He brought the script to Cruise for advice, afraid that the film went too far. Cruise loved the script, told Stiller to make it and offered to be in it if he could play the studio exec. Cruise had two conditions: He wanted giant fat hands and he wanted a dance scene.
This period is the highlight of RDJ's movie roles. In less than 2 years, RDJ starred in Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, and Sherlock Holmes. He was at the top of his game!!!
I remember he was happy doing Sherlock 2 because he never had the opportunity to make a sequel and he was doing his second sequel after Iron Man 2
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang started it all

He was great in Due Date as well lol
He pulled off an excellent performance in Home for the Holidays
"What do you mean, you people?"
"What do YOU mean, you people?!"
"Huhh!"
This movie is superb. No way in hell it should have worked but it did. The whole cast was fantastic.
It works, because it's making fun of Hollywood's nonsense and is very unapologetic.
People say: "I'm above this kind of humor! I'm above this kind of humor!"
No you're not. You are laughing, because you know deep down that current day politics is STUPID. However you won't admit it publicly. This movie will tell you who you really are.
That's why it is a classic and every reaction channel farms it for easy and yet well earned points.
@@BigGator5 Agreed! Honestly reminds me of Mel Brooks because of how well it reveals and/or relates.
Your right its fantastic
It works because Ben Stiller based the whole thing on his experience working on Empire of the Sun with some big name stars.
Tom Cruise as Les Grossman was hands down the best surprise within this movie. Tom was not promoted as a cast member and it was left to the audience initially to figure it out. The fat hands was one of his conditions to doing the film after Stiler told him about the movie exec role.
Makes me wonder how fat Harvey Weinstein's were...
Allegedly, he said “I’m gonna do the movie but I’m gonna have fat hands and I’m gonna dance”
To my shame I don't think I recognized him until the credits when I saw it the first time.

One of the best comedies ever. The Blazing Saddles of this generation.

Well maybe not on Blazing Saddles level but i agree 😂
I say the same thing
@@marcwarren5985 nothing will get to the level of blazing saddles, but this movie earns the honorary title tbh
I can see that.. absolutely some comparisons could be made.
I've never been a big Ben Stiller fan, but how can you not love this film? In my book, it's one of the best comedies ever.
His best stuff is what he writes usually.
Dodgeball, this, zoolander and the watch are my favourite Ben stiller films
Heavyweights
@@BradyBonesPS3 Meet the parents not good enough? Id at that to the list and meet the fockers even more ridiculous
Ben Stiller has a lot of bangers.
He has some bad ones, but his good ones are some of the best comedies even to this day.
Would also like to let it be known. In theaters; the beginning fake movie trailers were actually mixed in with the real movie previews before the actual movie started. So it had people EXTREMELY confused before they caught on lol
I dont think I missed it, but I'm kinda sad you didnt leave in the infamous line, "I'm the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another dude" But there are so many great quotes from this movie, I know you cant get em all. Still thoroughly enjoyed.
Downey later said he thought the blackface flew mostly under the radar because everyone was more outraged by Simple Jack and that whole story.
Also i think because he was an actor playing an actor who was playing an actor. Also white chicks came out a few years prior
Also because there was an actor literally calling him out for it in the movie
@@TheNightOwl11683 this def helps, also because Black people weren't the joke, the actor thinking he can pull off blackface so he can play a black guy in a movie with an actual black person in it was the joke.
@@dansmart3182 "And why am I in this movie? Maybe I knew I had to represent, because they had one good part in it for a black man and they gave it to Crocodile Dundee." - Alpa Chino
But he didn't play blackface... his entire body was surgically altered! 🤣🤣🤣 black body would be more appropriate.
Tom Cruise is hilarious in this. And he had specific requests, like the large hands and to do the dance.
Also the fat suit!
And the hairy forearms
This is RDJs masterpiece. Such a great movie.
True, nominated for an Oscar for this. Though, he was going against some hard hitters that year. Oscar went to heath ledger for the dark knight
@@coachphill5076 Yea can't argue with that lol.
“Don’t judge meeeeeee!!!!!”
Jack Black is hysterical in this
This is one of those movies where I can recite the entire thing from start to finish. From the very first time seeing this in the theater to seeing you watch it for the very first time, Tropic Thunder never fails to make me so incredibly happy.
Fun fact: I showed this a few years ago to one of my friends who was a Vietnam vet and he loved the entire thing. He said it was one of the funniest movies he had ever seen, and that it was one of the best (loosly) based on the Vietnam war ever. R.I.P. Bruce. I love you and miss you so much.
Ahh yes, finally a person of culture. My best friend talked about this movie during his best man speech at my wedding.
@@WillMarr13 I have applied Kirk Lazarus's lesson on acting to real auditions and roles in my actual life. They are very few and far between, but I have used it nonetheless
Lol, the only three movies I have been capable of reciting word for word is Ace Ventura 1 and 2 and Tenacious D Pick of Destiny... But I can see why this is one of those types of movies too... I guess I just didn't rewatch it enough, as an adult, compared to how I watched movies constantly as a teen...
p.s. Send my thoughts to your friend Bruce for me!
me too
Have you watched the director's cut? Only a few changes, but really makes the movie that much better. And the commentary is great.
The fact the premise and the joke behind RDJs character is targeted at method actors/acting has toe'd this brilliant line of stereotyping is some of the best comedy scenarios I've seen in this era of movies.
Like you said, without context, RDJ doing blackface and a heavily stereotyped portrayal of a black man is a huuuge YIKES, but in this movie, in this context it works so well and doesn't come across as an attack
100% it did not punch down. It attacked Jared Leto types a decade before his joker debacle.
That's what happens when you have very superb writing... You find all the loopholes so nobody would get offended 😂 it's a shame really that you can't just portray something and everybody knows it's a joke today generation so sensitive you can't sneeze without offending somebody bunch of pussies
His character of a method actor who believed he could, and was right to, play any role was genius. Even more when he was called out on it so often throughout the film.
The really funny part has been when he's been called out for it by the PC brigade who just didn't get the whole point of the character and just saw RDJ in blackface. I mean, he even says "I'm a dude playing the dude, disguised as another dude!". Pick a stereotype of a Black officer in Vietnam and they threw it in.
@@dansmart3182 doesn't break character until the DVD commentary is done 🤷♂️
@@SteveForteGMR Yeah, for crying out loud, the movie was so self-aware they even had the genuine black guy point out the issue. The PC brigade can't grasp satire even when the movie points to it and says, "this is satire."
Most underrated comedy of all time. Hated it thought it was so stupid first time I watched it and then rewatched it understanding it isn't stupid and it's 100% what they were going for and it is gold
You know it's going to be a good video when MrLboyd says "Uh, this is gonna be weird guys..." less than 10 seconds in.
Lol…at we didn’t break from so hard, like he did on last week’s movie! Loved this reaction💜…dad always liked this one because it was a little lighter, it was hard for him to watch anything that pertained to Vietnam.
Ultimately, this is Hollywood actors making fun of Hollywood. Which is a once in a lifetime event, that they got away with it.
Your natural ability to always take things at face value and to never understand irony, is the first time I've heard anybody catch the "David Blaine" line. You have value.
I HIGHLY recommend Idiocracy. Especially in today's society. When it came out in 2006, we all knew it was going that way, but to see it realized is incredible.
Idiocracy has now become a documentary
It's got electrolytes, that's for sure
I can't believe you stopped your reaction before Les does his dance! Why!?! Best part of the movie.
Yeah...
I'm highly disappointed about not seeing a reaction to that....
That dance was epic lol I did not expect that dance lol
Rdj said he'd only take the role if the NAACP agreed to it and helped direct how to play the part so that he only offended the actors that thought blackface is a good idea and not POC
My favourite thing about it is that it's a commentary on method actors at least in my opinion. Tell me someone like Jared Leto wouldn't do this if he thought he'd be able to get away with it
@@silentassason Or Christian Bale
I can see Jared Leto trying to pull it off but not Christian bale but that’s just my opinion
Yes, that was Lance Bass of Nsync. This is the 2nd Ben Stiller movie in which Lance appears. I always just assumed that after he worked with Jerry Stiller in On the Line that Jerry introduced him to Ben and that's how the cameos happened.
I love the whole meta concept of Robert Downey Jr. being a Jewish guy playing a Australian guy, who's playing a black guy. There's layers to this.
It is mental to think RDJ was Oscar nominated for this, incredible
Its not mental, he plays a masterpiece in this lol
@@marcwarren5985 totally but comedies rarely get a look in at Academy Awards, especially not outlandish ones like this
Tom Cruise was so jacked about his roll that everything you see going on was his own design. Arguably one of his best rolls.
There are not many movies that made me laugh as hard as this movie. I remember being in the theater in tears from laughing at the absurdity. The parody of how Hollywood works is just perfect.
So glad you watched this movie. It's in my top 10. Someone sent me a bootleg copy when I was in Afghanistan. It certainly helped me and other folks. So funny.
You should check out Mystery Men. The best super hero movie to come out before super hero movies were popular.
This may be my favorite reaction of yours. Your bewilderment had me dying. The movie was that much more fun for it.
It's not every day you get an intellectual dissection of Tropic Thunder ;-)
I always figured Matthew McConaughey's character accepted the G5 and used it to fly a rescue mission. In the end he runs back into the woods - presumably back to his G5 - so they don't need to land and pick him up
“This is Twigman.”
“….does he want to come with us?”
That part kills me every time 😂
I can't believe that you stopped before the best end credits ever!
Music copyright strikes are too strong
You might enjoy the golden globe awards (in 2008, I think) it won...everything...a comedy...beat EVERYONE...it was insane.
After your great reaction to Blazing Saddles I really hoped this one would come up next. Just a brilliant comedy movie all the way through.
Steve Coogan's career is comedy gold. Alan Partridge character just one of gems he has created.
13:30 tom cruise requested large hairy hands because he thought it would be hilarious.. Especially in his dancing scene. His freak outs in this movie are top tier.
Edit: wrote this before I finished the video, really happy you said "top tier" lol
The line where rdjr says he dont drop character till he does the dvd commentary is true. He holds his char all the way till the end of the dvd commentary, i highly suggest watching it

Oh man. Even while bleeped you still should've kept Tom going nuclear on the ... whatever dragon. Funny as hell.
"I know who I am! I'm a dude, playin' a dude, DISGUISED as another dude!" Epic 4th wall breaking.
Glad you enjoyed it brother. A true classic. I would love to see you watch "Step Brothers" with Will Ferrell. It's probably my favorite comedy ever.
For comedy to be true and funny you can't be afraid to "go there". Look at the work of George Carlin, Richard Prior, indeed any of the great comedians for example.
Robert Downey’s best role ever! He was brilliant!
Fantastic movie! I liked it the first time I watched it but oddly enough, I thought it was even better and funnier the second time. Definitely a classic.
Another movie that came out around the mid-2000's that's also made its way into pop culture is Mean Girls. I watched it again recently with my daughters, and I was shocked at how much came from it. You should give that one a shot if you haven't already.
One thing that astounded me is finding out Les Grossman was played by Tom Cruise.
My mom went to see it in the theatre with me (I’d already seen it) and watching her face when Les Grossman showed up and then slowly realizing was hilarious.
Love that you reacted to this! It's hilarious and outlandish, but it also brings up some great things to have conversations about.
Glad you enjoyed this! One of the best comedies ever!
This is one of the only movies I’ve ever paid to see in the theater multiple times in one run. This movie totally embodies my sense of humor and it ranks as my all time favorite movie as such. Glad you liked it
First time I watched it I got in a minute late and sat down at the start of the booty sweat fake commercial. But I thought I made it in time for the trailers, so I thought it was a real thing for a good solid minute, until the scorcher trailer and I’m like “oh shit it actually got me”
Cabin in the Woods if you haven't seen it. One of the best movies ever.
I dont know about "one of the best movies ever" but yes, it is a fantastic movie and it is satire that's done so perfectly. Cabin in the Woods may be the most expertly crafted horror parody of all time, I'll give you that.
this is one of the greatest films of all time
Whe he starts doing the Jefferson's theme, I was crying in the theater....
When you started doing movies people were suggesting The Princess Bride. That would be a good one to do next or at some point
Probably my favourite comedy of all time. Pure genious. So great to see you appreciate it like that. Thank you.
Robert Downey jr did the DVD commentary as the character/w Ben stiller and jack black well worth the rewatch

Tropic Thunder is one of my all time favorite movies. Frickin' hilarious from start to finish. And in my opinion, Tom Cruise's best cameo if not his best role.
Your deadpan humour and this utterly absurd movie was a match made in heaven! *chef's kiss*
It took balls to play that character by Robert Downy, he played it just right where you can accept the absurdity of it and laugh.
I have to make a pitch (speaking of absurdity) for you to watch Weird Al's movie "UHF" a gem of a film, and totally weird. It's everything you expect and so much more! I think you'll enjoy it. Anyone that likes his music & video's definitely will! I look forward to seeing your reaction to it.
I think a lot of people missed the point of Downey's character here, it's made pretty clear that the African American character really was a bad idea, as people point out to him during the course of the film.

"I have fat hands and I'm gonna dance!" - Tom Cruise, on how he wanted to play Lex Grossman. FACTS.
Tom Cruise dancing at the end just put the cherry on top. Is there anything that man can't do.
It took until closing credits for me to realise (find out) les grossman (french for "the gross man"?) was Tom Cruise. It bugged me whilst watching it that I recognised him from somewhere but the over the top insanity of the character threw me off guessing correctly.
