Robert Downey Jr was nominated for an Oscar for this, and it was WELL deserved lol.

Yeah but Heath Ledgers win was deserved as well. I think that's the only reason he didn't win was because they were nominated the same year.
Unfortunately, I realize now that, while Robert Downey Jr. played a respectful role, people who are filled with race-prejudice can't help but see every comic black character as a demeaning representation, that's just how these people think about black people, and these people, the OP is one, think that Robert Downey Jr. is mocking black people in his portrayal. While this is completely false, that is exactly what they think, and they constitute roughly 1 in 10 of the non-black audience of this film. This is why those few racially biased morons recommend this film to creators of color, especially to women, because they think that reviewing the film and watching the portrayal somehow humiliates black people (as it does in their simple minds). I have to point this out, because to a person of normal sensibilities, this isn't obvious at all, I didn't even realize this until I had a back-and-forth with a racist in a comment section. That's why I don't think creators notice until WAY too late that they are being subtly mocked by fascists. This is not Robert Downey Jr.'s fault, he did a good job of being respectful.

What I am saying is that RACISTS aren't all that clever, and they don't understand that point, and just see Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal as a stereotypical performance, even though it is not.

The fact that Robert Downey Jr actually does the directors commentary in character is one of the most meta and brilliant things ever. Best part of owning it on DVD.

Favorite thing about Tom Cruise being in this movie is he said he'd only do it if he could wear a fat suit, have big hairy hands, and that he'd be able to dance also RDJ legitimately did the DVD commentary in character💀

Tom Cruise has basically the greatest cameo in film history in this movie. I remember seeing this in theaters and everyone lost it when he hit the screen.
Only thing is this wasn't a cameo, it was a full role.

Seeing this in the theater was such an experience. It took everyone a minute to realize the trailers were part of the actual movie, and just like you, it got everyone laughing and smiling immediately, which then extended the entire runtime
Just the idea that the movie was about events that happened and the making of the movie about those events and that all the events were all made up and never even happened to begin with but then the things happening were actually real and they all thought it was part of the movie... like seriously who would ever even come up with that?? Thats just what makes this movie so good.
RDJ was so serious about not dropping character. I first watched this on blue ray. He did the whole commentary in character! That was as funny as the movie. He and Ben stiller doing commentary, and he is still in character as Lincoln. He keeps it up until the rescue scene. Then he does the Australian voice until the end.
This comment made me circle back to see the entire movie with RDJ in character, no regrets

Watching her lose her shit during Cruise's dance scene made me laugh harder at this movie than any other time since I first saw it, lol.
Arianna killed this one. Many reactors have done this, but her reaction was the best. She really appreciated so many jokes others seem to miss.
Yeah, most of the reactions I've seen, they were just too worried about correctness. If it's funny I'm going to laugh whether or not someone else thinks it's not.
Most people actually don't genuinely laugh at every single thing that happens, this is quite a rare mood to be in.
She not only pays attention, she knows when to comment without talking over dialogue and just watches a movie how the filmmakers intended an audience to. It's not a "reactor's" business to apologize to or be offended for her subscribers and viewers.
BJ and Asia did a pretty good one, and BJ picked up on the “blood flavored corn syrup” joke. However, I’ve never seen anyone react to the bit where Bill Hader’s character bites a strawberry and spits it back onto the tray.

Steve Coogan. The director in the movie was at my Grandma's funeral in February. He came up to my mum and chatted about when they were kids. Then onto my aunts and then spent about 30 minutes 45 minutes talking to my Grandad. It was nice of him to come to the wake after taking his mum to the funeral part. (If people are wondering why he was there, his mum and my Grandma were best friends)
Coogan in Hamlet 2 was great as well
The Premise, the writing, the performances, the risk... I will say it, this is a top 10 comedy of all time.

Side note, Tom Cruise actually created the character of Les Grossman; Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller are actually close friends and Ben sent Tom an early copy of the script (that didn't have any of the studio side of things) and Tom said there should be a third party in the mix and suggested an over-the-top studio exec, and wanted to play the part himself.

Arianna's laughing through this movie is legendary. This movie has aged so well.
I remember when this movie came out. I didn’t take until I reach my 30s for me to fully appreciate it. I watched it several times and I still have no idea how they came up with this. Everyone was perfectly cast, and every scene was hilarious.
Hands down one of the best comedies in the past 20 years. Ben Stiller is a genius to make this.

But it is meta to us, for the character it was all true. Kirk Lazarus playing a soldier disguised as a farmer. A dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.

That opening scene with Ben Stiller getting shot is stolen from Platoon, one of the most tragic Vietnam war movies ever made, and that makes it even funnier.
This one's a classic. Saw this in theaters with the whole family. The entire theater was dying with laughter. Tom cruise's character was so golden 🤌🤣

They were speculating about if they could cancel Robert Downey Jr. for blackface. All we can do is enjoy the classics and mourn that our culture doesn't know how to laugh anymore.

This movie has become one of my top 5 comedies of all time. The writing, casting, acting, characters, call-backs and inside jokes, satire, one-liners - everything - are just top notch. Not for people that take things too seriously or don't like adult humor.
When Ben stiller approached cruise with this. cruise told him he wanted bigger hands and to dance. And convinced him obviously. The rest is history!!
Probably Robert Downey Jr.’s best role ever. Dude is hilarious in this.

There's an old maxim that says that, when a movie's cast is full of famous people, the movie is usually crap. Tropic Thunder completely disproves that. I LOVE this movie.
Mainly because this is a movie these actors joined because it sounded like a hilarious idea, not because the director had hundreds of millions to waste on famous faces. This was the passion project of a lifetime for Ben Stiller.

I saw this on opening day and the theater was about half full but people were crying with laughter throughout. Such a good time and incredible movie. I am glad she loved it.

Hey Arianna, we all know the legendary line Lazarus says "I don't drop character until I've done the DVD commentary". Well, if you watch the Tropic Thunder DVD commentary RDJ is on it and he does the whole thing in-character as Lazarus (who is in-character as Sergeant Osiris). It really doesn't get any better. WOW!!!!

It's been years since I laughed at a movie like this. Every actor gives a superb performance and the writing is crazy good. MVP to Tom Cruise and RDJ who took their roles to a whole other level. Best child throw ever!

Tropic Thunder is the closest any movie will get to Blazing Saddles made after 2000. We will never see anything like it ever again. An instant classic that I will have my kids watch some day.
I saw this movie with my buddies in Afghanistan. It made the deployment so much better. I have never been able to find anyone that reacted to this masterpiece in the way that it deserves until Arianna. Bless her heart. Btw, Tom Cruise also did his own choreography for the dancing.

Respect to Ben Stiller for writing and producing this movie. Nobody has the courage to dare to be witty and offensive anymore. Main reason I don't care about the strike in Hollywood is because writers now think Robert Downey's character is offensive. They live in a different universe and they can stay there if they want.

This is one of the few films that I'd recommend watching the director's cut of first. Genuinely one of the most consistently hilarious comedies of the 21st century, without question 🤣

This movie is incredible from start to finish, but one of my favorite lines to reference is Ben Stiller’s “NOOO!!!” after killing the panda. Saying it with the same intensity, but for very trivial things. 😂

This has become my favorite film for Reactions; given the witty script, perfect performances, and a genuinely well-made film, this movie somehow slipped by many people at release and it's a blast seeing others experience it now.
