Exactly, it was actually mocking white washing where they hire white people to play other raced characters in movies in real life. The most underrated joke in this entire movie was the news broadcast detailing how Kirk Lazarus underwent surgery to change his skin color. One of the shots was of a bottle of a popular Chinese ointment with a red label. I swear...only Chinese people get this joke. It's a medicine for aches, pains, and sprains and legit changes your skin colour to a dark brown. Another thing to note is that the ointment stings like Hell when you apply it anywhere near the eyes, nose, mouth, or open wounds. I was the only one who died laughing at this scene in a room full of my white friends and they had no idea why.

I unfortunately never saw this in the theater, but the most animated I’ve seen a movie theater audience was during the opening of Jackass in 3D. That was the only 3D movie I’ve ever seen, but oh man was it _SUCH_ a good choice and a lasting memory.
It’s opening sequence with, uhm, “sex toys” flying straight into our faces was one of the most hilarious theater experiences of all time. The audience was crying with laughter and flinching everywhere, reflexively putting their arms/hands up like that would stop the “toys” from hitting them in the head. 😂
It was said that the movie had some of the best 3D effects ever featured in a movie thanks to the fact that the majority of the movie was filmed using cameras specifically made for that purpose. Most 3D movies did 3D as an afterthought to make some extra money, and did it in a cheap manner that was done entirely in post production, so it really they’re never remotely as realistic looking as when special 3D cameras are used.

RDJ is a Daniel Day-Lewis type.
Jack Black would be Eddie Murphy (ironically mixed with RDJ's real past)

Ben Stiller’s Simple Jack role was making fun of Sean Penn’s “I am Sam” character, which tanked because the movie had Sean going full “r-word.” So pathetic that YT won’t let us write that word (amongst a million other things). There was nothing endearing about Sam - you’re just meant to feel bad for him the whole time. That’s the movie that one would need to watch in order to understand that specific parody.
Forest Gump was merely an example of a movie like that being successful because Forrest was bizarrely great at so many things. Like ping pong lol. Forrest lived such a successful life.

this movie was brilliant, and incredibly clever. i love how it completely rips into Hollywood's bullshit, from method actors that go too far "for the art," to studio greed, racism, and general insensitivity to marginalized groups (ie, the Simple Jack character and in general depictions of individuals with mental illness or disabilities). RDJ put in such a great performance, and it was amazing to see how many people missed the joke when it comes to the character of Kirk Lazarus. As a Black guy, I didn't see it as RDJ making fun of Black people, or even playing to black Stereotypes, but a pretty accurate portrayal of what many in Hollywood think is an "authentic" portrayal of Black people and "Black culture," but also how quick Hollywood is to cast a non-person of color actor/actress in a story based on true events in which the actual person is a person of color. It's just so good.
Easily one of my favorite Ben Stiller movies, if not, his best movie. This reaction was great, and I was cracking up right along with you. I remember me and a bunch of friends and my ex wife went to see this movie opening weekend, not knowing what the hell to expect, and loved it. It was also really funny seeing the audience react to the reveal of Tom Cruise as Les Grossman. I was surprised at how many people in the audience didn't realize it was him! It took me until the scene with the crew right before they go to Vietnam, for me to finally pinpoint why his voice sounded so damn familiar to me, then I was like, "Wait a minute, that's fucking Tom Cruise!"

I believe that before this movie came out, Tom Cruise was ostracized with the whole “jumping on Oprah’s couch thing.” This movie had people slowly accept him back into the mainstream.

@@republicofcasuals I'd say he kinda went in the opposite direction later in life, his earlier movies are actually way better acted than almost anything he's done in the past 20 years. That's not uncommon for aging actors but his came about way earlier than most. Let's just chalk it up to him being a very eccentric and weird person.

I watched this on tv a couple years after it released when I was a teenager. I started watching right before they got dropped into the jungle for real, and so I had no reference for Robert Downey's character. My little teenage brain lost it when he took off the wig and contacts at the end of the movie. So funny. Definitely the best watching experience having not seen the beginning at the time. lol

RDJ's character is something I enjoy massively because it's a satire of a particular school of acting, Stanislavski(?) or Method acting, which involves going through all these extra steps to make the character 'authentic'. I'm still a huge fan of the exchange between Laurence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman on the Marathon Man set...

I love that this is a perfect example of "context" - one way in which "blackface" is used _in a context_ that allows it! Rolling up at a halloween party in blackface is _not_ an appropriate context - but this movie uses it to lampoon not only Hollywood preferences for white actors over blacks, but the act of white-washing in itself: The context clearly is to ridicule the act as well as the sentiment around it. It isn't "just a joke" - it is a joke attached to an appropriate message! The joke punches UP, it takes the side of the sidestepped - in this case, it consistently takes the side of the secondary actor - who really happens to be black - *against* the "a-lister" in blackface.
It was still considered extremely risky when they made the movie, I see a lot of people go "how awesome stuff like this was totally fine long ago, back in the early 2000s", and that just isn't true; they knew they were potentially stepping over some boundaries, but after some deliberate testing with POC-audiences, they felt vindicated in their move, especially since the audiences caught and accepted the _context_ around it!
