Ruger "American Ranch" 7.62x39 Rifle (mini-30 magazine)

- The Ruger American rifles continue to impress me as a budget rifle that just simply works. The Ranch model using mini-30 magazines easily put 3 shots into half an inch @ 100 yards, so I don't know what more you could possibly ask for from a budget hunting rifle? I had no issues with the rifle whatsoever.
Check out our review of the Ruger American Ranch in 556 NATO (AR15 Mags): ua-cam.com/video/Pf-OBPfQkgM/v-deo.html
I love mine in 556 so much that i just bought a second one.
Nothing wrong with over engineering, is a rare thing these days.
Certainly not, but….it does add a lot of weight to have a hefty bolt that could be smaller and shorter. Ruger uses the same short action for their 300/5.56 and 7.62x39 guns that they use for their 308 chambered guns when they could use a micro action such what’s seen in the Howa 1500 micro or CZ 527.
@jimyeats you haven't been eating your wheet-bix if you think this rifle is too heavy.
I have a 7.62x39 Ranch. I bought a bunch of steel cased Russian ammo when it was cheap. Deadly accurate, even with 20-cent a round ammo. When I head into the back country this rifle comes with me.
Do you find this model easy to dismantle and clean if you are using the surplus corrosive ammo?
@@jg6658it isn
@@jg6658yeah there’s a little switch for a lack of words that let’s the bolt slide all the way out the back when pressed
That’s really reassuring. I’ve only fired Norma Tactical brass rounds from mine and have been having a hard time finding them at a decent price, was thinking of grabbing steel cases ammo to shoot instead
i own 4 ruger americans including this model and i love them all. really affordable and supremely accurate for a budget firearm.
Great overview. I'm glad to see you fellas "down under" enjoying Ruger rifles.
Great video. I have this rifle and my experience mirrors yours. Cheers from East Tennessee!
Nice review here. I’ve got the same model, being in the US, I have some 20 rounders for it as well. It really performs the best with the 5 or 10 rounders. I’ve also got a Mossberg MVP Patrol in 7.62x51. They both are great rifles, but I always prefer the American. It’s got a great action. Thanks again for a thorough review sir.
skinner sights makes a really cool scout rail for these.
I've got the same model in 300 blackout and would have put close to 500 rounds in it and hasn't jammed or misfired once... I've given it a very hard time and it has some great stopping power within 100mtrs... My best is 116kg in the cane 👍 my review would be buy one!!!
I’ve been thinking about getting into hunting, and these look the goods for the price. I’m tossing up between the 300blk and 223. What sort of game do you find 300blk is solid for?
@@bloodynoobtubename there's a lot of hype over 300 Blackout but I can't see the fuss. It's designed for special military units who desire a quick calibre change to get heavy hitting barrier-blind, suppressor friendly ammunition into their automatic 5.56 NATO weapons systems. Factory ammunition can be expensive and not always readily available.
The 223 Remington is a superior hunting round in my opinion. Widely available, far flatter shooting and much better suited to Australian game requirements. Cheap, accurate, easy to find on the shelf anywhere.
To a certain extent I'd also recommend the 7.62*39 cartridge as well for the same reasons - cheap, pretty easy to find and effective on a large variety of Australian game. Due to its inherent design it also functions well in a short 16" barrel, as opposed to the 223 which runs best around the 22" mark.
All will work on game but as a general rule I'd recommend a 223, or 7.62*39 if you are not generally in more open areas (300m+ shot distance) as the 223 will shoot far flatter in those 300-400m scenarios.
@@boingkster Really appreciate the reply. I think I'm swaying more towards the 7.62x39 now, should cover most of my needs and the ammo prices seem really reasonable.
Thanks for the tips, have a great day!
@@bloodynoobtubename No worries, happy to help.
PS - save your empty brass for reloading later on, or even just to sell in bulk lots.
I HAD the same and it fed like crap, the whole thing was the worse rifle I’ve owned couldn’t be happier to see it go
The magazine on it takes the cake for the absolute worst part
Amazing rifles and a great cartridge. I'd recommend the American to anyone, and often do. MOA or better, fast-cycling action, reasonable price and available in a large variety of variants and calibres. What more can you ask? Sure the fit and finish isn't too shelf but as a solid dependable workhorse you've got a pretty decent rifle there.
Awesome work as always, keep up the good stuff!
Ahhhh, the old cheap Rugers. I’ve got the American in 22-250, and it’s a “lights out” shooter. Taken plenty of things with it, and put a bucketload of ammo through it; nil issues. I even let my Mate use it for a little trip we did, and he even did quite OK with it. Again proving you don’t have to spend a King’s Ransom to get good hunting results. Good vid Mate. Cheers.
Keep the videos going. Thumbs up from everyone who watches.
I have a Ruger PC 40 that has a lever delay like mechanism inside of it, the firearm had a squib load once (a friend was shooting it at the time) and a full power load came up behind it ! the gun unlocked violently but no damage to either the action and or barrel, rugers are tanks.
Every time I watch one of your videos it makes me wanna buy more guns
Yep. Go spend some more, you can never have enough.
Got my 223 ranch on Friday🤙🤙🤙
Happy with it, action is a bit raw but it definitely gets better the more I use it.
Great review. I picked up my Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 the other week - already impressed - bloody great rifles!
Just got one in 6.5 Grendel other day great little rifle
Great review. I think think this will be my next rifle.
Yank here, and I love mine. Ammo is still well under $.50/rd, and inside of 300 yards, it's perfectly capable. I have 20 round, mini 30 mags for it. It's a fine, short-range hunting rifle, and blast of a plinking gun. I'd like to pick one up in 6.5 Grendel, 5.56/.223 for sure, and possibly a .350 legend at some point.
Great review! There's so much you said in here that aligns with my own thoughts and that doesn't happen often.
The Bolt action doesn't look like it's giving you any troubles, your doing a lot better than any of the others reviewer's I've seen
Those are some nice groupings. From what I'm seeing these rifles also do pretty well with the seriously cheap ammo.
Thanks for doing this review. Planning to add this rifle to my safe soon.
Good review. I appreciate the obvious surprise in the hold open…..that’s an honest review.
Thanks for the review, my brother from a different motha, from across the pond.
Enjoyed the video agree with your review 100% Great little rifles
Love the rifle and the caliber, perfect 200 yard deer or hog and with 154 SP steel case a good bear stand rifle, 3X9X40 RITON scope, camo job and installed fixed rifle sights for a backup just in case.
If I come across one of those at a gun shop my wife is going to be pretty mad because it's coming home with me.
I have been looking for same rifle in same caliber for over 6 months ' but not willing to pay more then MSRP. But as soon as I find 1 I will definitely purchase this rifle especially since I already have mags for it from when I owned a mini 30
Great Gun!!
Bought one for pigs but because of the plandemic, drought and now flooding I haven't shot more than a few foxes with mine. But it shoots well. Ten round mags are very handy.
plandemic indeed
I have my PTA in for one of these currently. I already own one of the short barrelled RAR's and it's the best 22lr I have ever owned.
Out of interest Ozzie, have you had a lot of time on 303's? You certainly work a bolt like someone who has had significant time behind an Enfield ;)
I used 303s when I was a kid
I have already brought 2 Rugar American's based on your reviews... and have been happy but do i need another? :)..... but 7.62... draw card
Thanks for sharing. These are great rifles. 👍👍
Now I wanna buy one and handload some of Sierra’s 174gr Matchkings in it and take it out to some range.
Ute gun OZ, Keep up the good work Mate..! Ruger Great Bush or Paddock Rifle.
They are talking of coming for our Sks's now here (🇨🇦) too so I'm looking at one of these
Shot a SKS a lot as a kid and now do a bit of hunting with a Howa Mini Action in 7.62x39. Love the cartridge for pigs and have taken a fair bit of game with both that that steel case SST and Winchester soft points. Mostly shoot SST hand loads these days. 7.62x39 has been a pretty limited cartridge in country for years but in the last year or two it is now super expensive and rare as rocking horse shit. I’d definitely consider one of these Rugers, they are right up my alley for accuracy, packaging, and cost.
You can find some old FMJ Norinco at a decent price (with a bit of negotiation that said :) some batches shoot better than others, from experience the most desirable ammo are dressed in silver...
@@countercivilization A mate recently gave me 600 rounds of the Norinco that he's had sitting in his safe since he handed in his SKS in the 90's. Being FMJ it's not much chop for hunting but looking forward to doing a bit of plinking with it. Keen to see how it shoots.
@@Alan.livingston Lucky you! It is possible to pull out the factory fmj bullets and replace them with some SP or BT same weight. you will have less neck tension but a crimp can be apply...it tend to work nicely but each combo rifle ammunition is unique.
@@Alan.livingston yeah here in canada they want our sks's now. It is bullshit. I'm going to steal the expression "rare as rocking horse shit" if you don't mind, I haven't heard that one before 🤣 what is the date headstamp of the norinco? Everything I've bought here has been factory 61 '85 steel core. Supposedly the Chinese ammo is some of the best for surplus ammo. Little stinky but it works. Careful shooting it when it is dry out, the steel jacket and core can start fires. It's corrosive primed so you have to clean the rifle good after.
@@juliogonzo2718 shot a lot of this ammo in the 90’s and even though it says “non corrosive” on the box I always cleaned the rifle thoroughly. This lot is headstamped with two numbers on each case. 71 & 87
I have this rifle in 5.56 and .308. Good rifles and fun to shoot.
They don't make this rifle in 308
@@craiggerster9282 yeah they do.
It's called a predator, and is a longer action than the ranch, mechanically the same except for the chamber and magazine.
@@NelsonZAPTM they don't make the Ranch version in 308 was what I was implying. I know they do in the Predator model
All 5 of my Ruger americans smoothed out after a few hundred times of cycling the bolt.
Hi Ozzie, nice review. Im the process of buying one of the Predator models in 308, waiting for my PTA to come back. Would be great to see a review on how those perform. I suspect they would be mach the same from what I've seem online. Also checking out iron sights from NDS. The lack of open sights on rifles these days is really annoying.
Way to go brother!👍👍
i got one of these on sale in canada for 719 i love this gun very accurate and it is a good change from my sks rifles but i also love my sks rifles to
I’ve been wanting one of these for a while, my AIA m10 in 7.62x39 is a bit to nice to carry in the bush and it gets heavy on those longer walks.
Get a sleeve for it and do some curls it wont be heavy then.
@@aynjeleyes haha I knew there’d be someone with this comment.
@@lukeshervey4849 to be fair its a good rifle that is a tool for hard use as intended and end looking like beautiful 303 colour for the stock. Either its only value is collection or for use. I use a Mauser in 7x57 its over 100 years that I use for pigs and deer.
Im going to get one and make a mini scout rifle with it. Since the state i live in made up an unconstitutional mag ban over 10 rounds ill keep my 30 rounders for when when i need them. And use 10 rounders for this just hiking around or hunting in deep timber
Look like perfect rifle for hoging on the move =) I learned hard way you dont need heavy and long hunting rifle if you have in plan to cary it around on your back all of the day.
Great workhorse rifle. Shame we can't get the 20 round magazines here.
I'm sure that having a 20-round magazine would be more fun, but after watching the video, 10 rounds seems to be a good amount versus how much the magazine sticks out of the bottom. Just means more frequent magazine changes, though.
Would
You shoot steel case ammo out of these
Good review
Just bought the same one.

Good review mate
If you wanted to you could actually swap it out so it would use AR pattern magazines as an alternative just FYI. That would be my personal preference.
There is also a conversion to run Ak magazines in it as well
Hey Ozzie, how are you mate? COVID didn't knock you around too much I hope? Are you as excited as everyone else seems to be in Australia for the Southern Cross Small Arms Taipan which will hopefully be in production very soon. Are there any plans in the pipeline for a review of it? Cheers mate. :)
Great rifle. Wonder how a muzzle device affects accuracy?
I have that same scope on my .44 mag Winchester carbine.
Was cycling one at the LGS . Felt a bit had Mauser like feel.
Hey Ozzie any chance of getting hold of a Black Creek Labs MRX Bison in 300 Black Out for a review. Cleavers has heaps but I can barely find a review....the ones that are out there are terrible...
Hi Ozzie
For Australian conditions would you take a 7.62x39 or 6.5 Grendel
I'm not a huge fan of the hold open. I even ground down the hold open arm to eliminate it.
You guys are allowed 10 round rifle mags in Australia?
Nice gun but as for budget I'd say Howa has the market.
Hi , big fan
Very nice
How much dose the ammo cost
like one with longer barrel with trigger and stock cerakoted so much
Have a look at the ruger American predator go wild model
I got a 30 round mag for my mini 30 and it fits the ranch rifle perfectly,I never cared for the 7.62 x 39 until I bought the ranch rifle.Does any one know for sure whether the barrels on these guns are .308 or .310? Fro, what I'm seeing they are .308 so please enlighten me if I'm wrong.
Thank you.thats kind of what everyone else has been saying so I'm staying with the 308 bullets for now and is the barrel ever wears down I can always go to a 311-312 bullets then. @@kellyharbeson18
Wow 100 AUD for a 10 round mag! Crazy. I can get a 20 round mag for $32 USD ( 49 AUD).
Ever going to review a Haenel jaeger 10 ?
Is that a low profile rings setup?
Top stuff ozzie i love ya =)
i wonder if it will shoot cheap 7.62x39 suruplus okay?
I shoot Tula in mine just fine
Stupid question/s:
Is the bullet diameter 308, or 312?
What's the ballpark speeds you'd be getting out of that 16 inches?
Cheers!
My reloads are average 2450-2500 fps I’ve reloaded 308 and 310 bullets no problem I get better accuracy out of of the 310
@@2legit89
Thanks, where's the best place to get 310 projectiles?
I’ve ordered all mine online midway or optics planet. Good luck
.310 projectiles but you can also use .308 if need be though the heavier ones go better. 303 Brit also works as it’s .311 diameter.
You can reload with 308 bullets but you will loose a little velocity and accuracy. Ruger bore is to shoot 310 (HDY SST)
CZ bore is to shoot 311 (Norinco PPU...)
Not sure bore diameter for the Howa but with its longer barrel it shoots easy over 2500fps.
I had good luke with 150gn 303/ 312 bullets, best is to use very soft projectiles like the HDY SP as velocity is low.
👍👌
I thought u guys werent allowed to have guns?
Just stricter laws than USA
Can’t fault the Americans. Value for money not much comes close.
🇦🇺😎👍
The first shooter with a non prententious chamber on a bolt action.
Love the rifle but the Ruger 10 round magazines have been crap. Rounds will frequently take a nosedive in the mag. Poor follower design. Even told the CEO on the Ruger website. Mine is good to go with steel case Wolf and Silver Bear. Loves PPU brass.
They are like hens teeth around here if anybody even has one
What class of licence do you need to own one of these in Australia??
B
Centerfire rifle so it's cat B.
wan
Are you folks allowed to own firearms? I always thought that Australia had became a communist state and banned all kind of firearms on its citizens!
Nah media beat up. Whole world thinks all guns were banned. Just a lot harder to get self repeating. Bolt, lever, pump is easy to own on your standard category A, B license. But any chance they can they try restrict us more and more.
For me there is no pride of ownership in owning cheap and nasty rifles like that.
