I bought one of these as my second rifle after my Tikka .243 T3X CTR, and I absolutely love it! although the Tikka has a smoother action, this little beast gets more use as my work horse because it is just so handy. Light, inexpensive, accurate, compact, reliable. Good tradeoffs for a glass smooth action in my opinion.
I've got the American Compact in 223 and 308. Great rifles and both shoot sub-MOA with cheap PPU ammo. You just can't ask for more. Love your stuff mate, keep up the good work!
Great review. I just brought one of these in NZ a few months ago. Definitely worth the money. I wish it were stainless but blued is ok. Accurate, very light and very cheap to shoot. Hopefully going to shoot some Fallow or goats with it soon.

I bought the 300 blk version because I reload my own ammo and cast my own powder coated lead bullets for that caliber. Mine is also very accurate. I wish Ruger would make a scout version of this rifle with iron sights. Similar to the Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle in 308 winchester, but on the, cheaper to produce, Ruger American platform.
@Dogman tossed my salad Yeah, I have the Ruger Mini 14 in 300 blk too. Plus an H&R single shot break action rifle. 300 blk is a good caliber to reload. Especially if you cast your own lead bullets and convert 556 brass. It's a very efficient caliber similar in efficiency to 357 magnum rifles. They both work great using the same gun powders at about the same charge weights which gives you very similar muzzle energies. That's why I call my Ruger Mini 14 in 300 blk a semi auto 357 magnum rifle. There's a slight difference in bullet diameter between the two and 300 blk uses higher ballistic coefficient bullets, but load data and muzzle energies are pretty much exactly the same.
Awesome beater gun. Couple things I learned with Ruger Americans. I used red jewelers rouge & Dremel with felt wheel on low to polish the entire bolt & lightly on the lugs. Cycles slick now. Buy the trigger spring from MCarbo. It took my trigger from lowest setting of 4 lbs down to a nice 2 3/4 lbs. The trigger smooths up more after dry firing and about 100rds. I made sure the barrel was free floated. The plastic was too close on 1 side, used sandpaper to make even. Lastly epoxy filled the voids in fore end to make it stiff. Shoots Moa or less depending on ammo.
I have the 5 round rotary mag version in Kryptic Highlander. Accurate! EASY to carry. Great pickup gun! Was testing a handload, 60gr Hornady Varminter on Varget and CCI 400. 5 rounds with each of two charges. Total 100 yard group for 10 rounds was .9”. Had I been interested in accuracy instead of the Chrony it likely would have been even better!
I want one of these. I have one in 7.62x39. I normally shoot with 10 round magazines but for fun I bought 20 and 30 round magazines. Shooting that tires out your arm. I love it. I've only shot out to 400 meters at the range which is further than I'd ever need to for hunting. I'm lucky to get 50 to 100 meters unobstructed here in an open field. Thinking of getting an AK47 magazien adapter since I got so many of those from over the years.

I bought the full length barrel ruger that takes the AR mag. It’s been decent with the OSA soft points. After a few hundred shots the bolt has definitely smoothed up a lot. The mag hold open annoys me a bit. And I likely would have been happier for the 5 shot flush fitting mag when walking around the farm with it over my shoulder, or shooting from the car. @@boingkster Yep :) I may need more patience than a hospital, but - shooting +/- 1k 22lr a week, I stick to my price limits (ps, a henry lever action and multiple "SPEED-D-LOADERS" are a bad combo on the wallet). @@boingkster "plan" for the sightron is multi-rifle (swap as needed), centerfire (multi-purpose, primarily target). I typically go for overkill on the magnification for target work. I've always figured greater X means less aiming error, but realistically, I can't see any real difference in group size (at least at shorter ranges) between a 6x scope and 25x (Japanese made Tasco 6.5-25x50 is a good scope). I've have several Primary Arms 6x32 'ACSS' 22lr scopes on different 22's, and I really like them - only drawback I've found (they're really compact) is it can be hard to add a torch / spotlight mount to them. But you're right - for hunting / field, 'lower range' magnification (and preferably lower weight!) is usually a good thing :)
"Decent" accuracy??? Every one of those groups would handily everything I need from a rifle! For anything that that needs smaller groups I'm grabbing my 17hmr. Thank you for the detailed review!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this rifle. I've been looking into a potential rifle for both plinking, and small game hunting. I think this is exactly what I've been looking for. I appreciate your content.
Yep, me too, got one on Gun Broker for about $50 under MSRP so not unsatisfied... My local Sportsmans Warehouse had them for about 10 seconds a couple weeks ago, again, MSRP is the going rate soooooo..... I had been watching from Feb - early May, it was obvious when Ruger dumped a bunch on the market... they're gone again at the moment, hang tight and watch Gun Broker, not that you have to buy there but it will reflect the availability for sure...
I picked up one here in Ontario Canada yesterday. I pick up my vortex scope today so I can try it out. It's pissing rain so I doubt I'll try it out today though.
No surprise on the Hornady ammo, best you can buy for an affordable price. I am a great believer in Lapua brass for reloading, never tried their loaded rounds.
Also I'll add that the only legitimate complaints on this rifle are: - Bolt action is gritty, and generally neither smooth nor tight. Loose tolerances on a budget rifle, is what it is. Also I noticed my example of the rifle showed a few spots of rust shortly after one hunt, so definitely oil it liberally when storing. - The barrel is "free floated" from the stock, but the stock has no rigid bedding and often comes in contact with the barrel. Another cost cutting measure by Ruger, but a very common complaint is the fit/feel and generally poor quality of the plastic stock
@@benjamin3290, you could likely put the action into an aftermarket laminate stock for more rigidity, but that will increase the weight. I guess it depends which matters more to you.
I always enjoy your reviews! It's nice to see a review that includes shots from standing position with this rifle. It makes the most sense to me, after all, this is a rifle that will most commonly be shouldered quickly and spontaneously while out and about, right?
Good, the .243 gets this to work for deer in many states. Too many will try .22 rimfire and while a .223 or a .22-250 could do deer, I like the .243 and 6mm Remington better.
I’ve got the rotary mag version. Shoots the OSA 55g ammo @ approximately .5”. I tried heaps of other brands at the time but the OSA stuff came up trumps. I now reload my own as I enjoy it, and still get approximately .5” if I do my part. Good cheap little firearm and would by again.👍👍👍
There's definitely a place for them in the market, they're a good rifle at a good price. Mind you if you're looking specifically for a minimum legal overall length, 16" barrel, threaded muzzle, integral pic rail and factory 10 round mag then the Ruger does pretty well for the price too. I can't think of another combo on the market at the moment with that, for that price, that shoots sub-MOA with factory ammo.
Been a year ago since my last post down below. I've attained a 1.17 MOA with the cheapest ammunition I could find. This was with the standard 4 lb trigger as well. Going to put a one and a half pound trigger on it and use match ammo and see if I can stack the shots so I can start going out to 500 yd. Safety is loud as hell. Other than that seems to shoot pretty straight.
Got me @ 556 rifle too. Norinco jw 105 556 bolt action 5 shot repeater. Its got weaver bases and setup with a tube style tasco red dot sight. Ive yet to zero it myself but I did shoot it and it was dropping at around 125 yards when aiming at 150 yards. very nice little rifle that Ill be using this year.
Top review. I notice you're wearing FDE tactical crocs. It must be a Qld thing ;-p On a serious note, did you find the shorter 16" barrel more blasty/noisy then the std 22" barrel on the other Ruger American's?
Ozzie, Ruger had a 308 Predator with AI mags 18inch barrel basically a Ranch in 308. Any inside info on why they discontinued it? seemed a great budget all round rifle setup.
I almost bought this gun, but I ended up buying the Henry 22LR lol. This bad boy is on my list though! My mom is worried I’ll have a gun collection (which is kinda true) sorry mom lol 😂
I signed up for tack pack and got some 30 rd 556 ar mags and I don't yet have a use for them but this rifle would change that. We had a ban on mags above 10 rounds but we can keep the ones we have so I need to put them to use I can't sell them and I want a 556 bolt action for coyote and other small game .plus all the other calibers Thay have it could b a funny collection .4 of the same rifle but all in difrent calibers and configurations 😎
Bought one .... Great little Rifle . If you want polished woodwork , buy a Baby Grand Piano . Just don't take it bush . Personally , I cant see the advantage of having a Long barrel on a heavy rifle that in reality doesn't shoot any better for day to day shooting .
Had one for 7 days , mine wouldn’t feed maybe 1 round out of a magazine full ! If it did the bullet tip was bent ! I tried 5 different brands and bullet types and 3 different mags !
Give some 60gr TAP and some Aussie outback 69gr, they both go good in mine. They are cheap but accurate, i changed mine over to AI mags to have the ability to single load, you cant single load and AR mag
@@D1NG0 i bought 1000 rounds of it 12months and have cloned 1000 rounds with 2206h and the 60gr vmax pills, i just measured the OAL of the tap and seated them the same length then loaded a bunch at adi suggested charge weights to see which is best and loaded at that, they get 1/2inch groups
Good review Qzzie. I've been running a Gen 1 RARR in 300BLK since 2015. It's a great little rifle and super handy in the farm ute or on the quad. The only improvements I'd have liked is stainless finish and detachable box mag of greater capacity, and the Gen 2 is halfway there! Did that price include the scope and rings?
You need an Akubra on your head to be taken serious, nah, just windin you up mate. Thanks for the review ! Keep the reviews coming and stay out of the sun.
I know this an old video but im interested in knowing if you glass bedded the barrel or did anything to the stock to achieve such accuracy with this particular rifle?
Cheers Mate ! Not mentioned in your video is the cutout in the bottom of the bolt and the special design of the three lug bolt face that allows this rifle to accept AR magazines . I noticed that you used the factory supplied mag and didn't use an AR magazine . Are 30 round AR mags banned or unavailable in Oz ? I live in South Carolina USA , and AR mags cost about $10 around here and are readily available . Palmetto State Armory in S.C. sells PMAGs like McDonald's sells burgers .

I wouldn't waste Match ammo with it
This is a perfect SHTF or all purpose rifle.
I have been trying to find one in 5.56 and 7.62x39. They are like hens teeth around here, sadly.
Try GunBroker, that’s where I got both.
Great review thanks Ozzie, keep em coming 🍻
I picked up one here in Ontario Canada yesterday. I pick up my vortex scope today so I can try it out. It's pissing rain so I doubt I'll try it out today though.
Would like to see a version with see through mount and iron sights
Those rings were so high I thought they were see thru sights.
No surprise on the Hornady ammo, best you can buy for an affordable price. I am a great believer in Lapua brass for reloading, never tried their loaded rounds.
Thanks Mate
I have this same rifle, it's one of my favorites in my collection. She's no beauty queen but a great shooter for the price point
Timney trigger and Anarchy Outdoors goodies are awesome upgrades. Also I put a Q Cherry Bomb on the muzzle, such a versatile rifle
Also I'll add that the only legitimate complaints on this rifle are:
- Bolt action is gritty, and generally neither smooth nor tight.
It really like those 55 grainer VMAX
Placed mine in a Boyd’s pro varmint stock with a glades armoury bolt handle, it rocks for a smaller economy rifle
I always enjoy your reviews! It's nice to see a review that includes shots from standing position with this rifle. It makes the most sense to me, after all, this is a rifle that will most commonly be shouldered quickly and spontaneously while out and about, right?
They really are great budget rifle my wife has one in 243 shoots half inch with osa ammp
Good, the .243 gets this to work for deer in many states. Too many will try .22 rimfire and while a .223 or a .22-250 could do deer, I like the .243 and 6mm Remington better.
When it shoots that good is it even budget lo
Saw 1 yesterday, 650 with a nice vortex scope. Think I'll get it today. Woot
Love this rifle. Very accurate once you find the ammo it like the best!
Which worked for you?
American Egale XM 193 55Gr
In 5.56
I’ve got the rotary mag version. Shoots the OSA 55g ammo @ approximately .5”. I tried heaps of other brands at the time but the OSA stuff came up trumps. I now reload my own as I enjoy it, and still get approximately .5” if I do my part. Good cheap little firearm and would by again.👍👍👍
Mine also liked the AE XM193 ammo - 1/2” groups with it.
You forgot to mention it's crazy loud.
Thanks mate. Another no BS simple review.
Buying this next week also I had no idea that Australians could still get any firearms
Got the 7.62x39 version and a couple of ten round mags for pigs. Good little rifles IMO.
would absolutely love one of these, how much did it cost?
@@russmeyer8981 About $1050AUD here in Australia now.
@@mudbutton2 cheers mate! time to start looking!
@@mudbutton2 500 US
For a thousand dollars I would prefer a quality Sauer 100 any day.
Sauers are heavy
@@Juganort81 if you find 3kg too heavy it may be time to hit the gym.
@@speakupriseup4549 heavier
Good onya, Ozzie! your reviews are great!
Hopefully mine will be ready to use in a couple of weeks. These are not easy to find.
Nice review. I’m thinking about grabbing one of these if I can find one.
Damn... Not the review I was expecting! Now I have to buy one.
Love ruger. I got ruger 10/22. Such a fun rifle. I bet this 556 is nice too.
I didn't know Aussie's were even able to purchase guns!
Ruger should have just done this with the GSR
Good review great little rifles
I like the heavier barrel compared to the regular hunting Ruger American.
I’m sitting on the fence between a Savage 110 scout 223 and the Ruger “American Rancher”556. What are your thoughts or could you please do a review?
Great review! Good on ya mate!
Would love to see someone make a ar15 mag fit a tikka
1 in 8 twist will be optimal for 62 gr - 77gr bullets.
Bought one .... Great little Rifle . If you want polished woodwork , buy a Baby Grand Piano . Just don't take it bush . Personally , I cant see the advantage of having a Long barrel on a heavy rifle that in reality doesn't shoot any better for day to day shooting .
These are so hard to find at the moment
Man thats a beauty! I want one now lol
Had one for 7 days , mine wouldn’t feed maybe 1 round out of a magazine full ! If it did the bullet tip was bent ! I tried 5 different brands and bullet types and 3 different mags !
Pick one mate yeah it takes a are magazine but there is some amount of wobble imhop dura magazine is the only way to go
Wishing you well Aussie.
Picked one up today mine came with a dura metal magazine tried other 556 mags in it ran snap caps but there is some slop in the magazines
I'd like to see a 300 blk vs 350 legend ,that b cool
I got one in 300AAC Black out. Should have bought the 5.56 too.
Have you tried running wolf steel ammo through it?
Give some 60gr TAP and some Aussie outback 69gr, they both go good in mine. They are cheap but accurate, i changed mine over to AI mags to have the ability to single load, you cant single load and AR mag
Where did you get the mag conversion?
Mine loves the TAP 60gr. But cant find it anywhere lately.
@@annoyingcheese9078 i have an AI short action frame from my 6.5cmoor so i just swapped the mag wells over and use an mdt poly 223 mag
That would be a great spotlighting rifle.
Just picked one up in 300BLK!
Depends on the options ua-cam.com/video/PyQp15aT3xU/v-deo.html
My gen 1 has the SS choice, but the gen 2 in 6.5 Grendel is in black
You need an Akubra on your head to be taken serious, nah, just windin you up mate. Thanks for the review ! Keep the reviews coming and stay out of the sun.
69gr Outback is giving me 1.5” five round groups at 200yards. I have the first Gen of the RAR.
How do I connect with someone from Australia, if I want to sell mine from USA?
I know this an old video but im interested in knowing if you glass bedded the barrel or did anything to the stock to achieve such accuracy with this particular rifle?
No it’s standard
thank you@@ozziereviews
Hey was that Hornady ammo 5.56 or .223?
Would be good if I could find some 5 round magazines for it :(
Cheers Mate !
Update . I picked up mine today . $ 600 USD , with one ten round PMAG . I picked up a Toolman Tactical 32 round mag . Both work flawlessly .
Gday Aus
Have you picked up a gen 2 yet ?
Looking forward to seeing you put one though its paces.
Excellent Video. 👍
Hey mate try the Mauser m18 I heard it’s pretty good!
