The idea of reusing a character model and calling it a "digital actor" is the most creative way to hide laziness

I don’t blame them though. With all the crunch nonsense that can go into film and game production, having a convenient character model that’s ready to go with barely any rendering or shit like that is probably a godsend

Funny thing about the live Action Mulan. I work as an English teacher in China. And I did see this in the theater here. Having seen the original several times I cringed through pretty much the whole movie while my wife, who had never seen the animated movie said she thought it was pretty good. Then we went home and I showed her the animated movie and she realized that the live action one we had just watched was pretty bad. lol

The Mulan live-action movie was actually a pretty good Wuxia martial arts fantasy flick. China cranks out a hundred of them a year and I watch them occasionally. What it was NOT was a decent live action version of a Disney musical. They just were not THINKING when they put this together.

    • @13thKingMu

There're multiple live action Mulan are pretty good but Disney version is the worst
Non of the writers have much knowledge about Chinese culture, almost the whole cast beside the father are just bland. Their reason remove Li Shang and war musical are plain stupid, one of the main antagonist being a Witch(what?) and she just a worse Dark Vader
The fact there're alot more culture flaw in Live action than animated Mulan that it's not funny

Treasure Planet was that Disney deliberately screwed the animation team by moving the movie to a November release when it should have come out during the summer. Meaning it had to compete with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it never stood a chance in hell. On top of the fact it was poorly marketed (the marketing it got made it the opposite of what the movie was actually about). It's the rare one out in this case where the movie is genuinely good in both story and animation but due to external reasons it failed. Had it come out in today's day and age it would have done a lot better.
Props to Cats, it managed to not only terrified me but also traumatized and scarred me for the rest of my life. A feat no horror film prior managed to accomplish.

I actually recently remembered them and asked myself, "what was the desert action movie with the shirtless guy who has a tall green man tell him that he's beautiful? Because it definitely wasn't Prince of Persia." Long story short, this video came out at a really convenient time for me.

The John Carter film was based on the John Carter books by the man behind Tarzan. It is decent, but it flopped so hard at the box office mostly because of how terrifyingly long its development hell was.
No wonder why Tarzan Succeeded So Well and John Carter became more low key (due to the literary series being more old fashioned than Star Wars).

As someone who's actually seen Mars Needs Moms...I can confirm that it's worth the hate. Like how could Disney look at that gross mess and say "Yup, this is cinema"? It feels like a Nickelodeon movie, not a Disney one! Also, I adored Turning Red and it definitely didn't deserve that treatment. I find the controversies surrounding it silly, like the period scene doesn't last long, you can just skip it (and MrEnter's review is...something). Or how it only appeals to a very specific demographic...I'm not Chinese (I'm Latino and our parents act similar) nor Canadian and yet I still enjoyed it! The animators at Pixar put their heart and soul (pun intended) into these movies, and the least Disney can do is treat them right.

One of the problems I remember with Mortal Engines was I think a lot of fans of the book got turned off because the main protag (Hester, the girl with the red scarf) is described as having incredibly visible facial scarring, and it's kind of a key character detail and plot significant detail but the film adaptation toned that down massively.
I think it also had the problem that some other book adaptations get where the books are popular, but in a niche way and are kind of hard to market to a mainstream filmgoing audience so you run the risk of creating something that pleases no one

The biggest issue with the Cats film (beyond everything) is that the source material doesn't lend itself well for a movie format. Cats is a musical that emphasizes the music and dancing more than the story. The whole cats gathering and begging for death thing is just setup to have these cats dance and sing about themselves. You can't translate the theater experience of a musical like Cats into a live-action film without making people confused and angry.

I remember seeing a few ads for this movie. I bet one of the reasons it did so terribly was the premise. It's a Mars isekai starring a cowboy with one of the most generic names in the universe. Apparently this was based on some obscure sci-fi novel written in 1912... It probably says a lot when more people remember Dune when they think of sci-fi novels.
    8:43
This was also based on a book series nobody cares about! From what I know this movie sucked. The editing is very bad despite the high budget and special effects.
    11:15
Turning Red was an especially upsetting case because the creators genuinely wanted it to be in theaters. But due to a combination of the sickness and the higher-ups thinking it wouldn't do well (and also being jerks), it ended up on Disney+ instead.
    12:37
    OHHHH GOD THIS ONE
This almost killed Squaresoft, by the way. They were only saved after they merged with Enix (company that does the Dragon Quest series). After that it's been... A ride. They kinda tried the 3D model actor thing again with Lighting from FF13 showing up in a few fashion advertisements, but it never really stuck. Also Square Enix almost ran themselves out of business again with FF14 1.0, but that's a story I think most people know by now.

Cats was originally a book of poems about quirky cats, which the musical adapted into a narrative. But the movie got that bit...wrong.
The John Carter novels are rather well-known; being by the author of Tarzan doesn't hurt, either.

Disney self sabotaged Treasure Planet because they wanted to kill deep canvas. They did the same with John Carter because they didn't want to make the whole trilogy. Both are fantastic movies

John Carter and Lone Ranger were pretty decent to me but i feel like me and my family were the only ones who paid to watch those movies in cinemas when they came out lmao

I grew up with final fantasy: spirits within being one of my favorite movies for whatever reason (it's still good for nostalgia) and when I grew up and saw it again I was surprised by some of the actors voicing the characters, especially the main 2 since child me thought they were voiced by sandra bullock and ben affleck lmao

I remember seeing John Carter and genuinely loving it. I watched it again a year ago and it's definitely not as good as I thought it was when it came out. I was also 9. That said, I still thought it was like okay.

As someone who watched it as an adult back then, I thought it was a solid movie, but the high budget and horrible marketing campaign basically burried it from the start.
Plus it's bases of a book that is basically one of the grandfathers of Science Fiction now, so the story is a bit outdated in terms of what is/was th current fashion for SciFi.

I actually watched John Carter in theaters when I was 10 years old and I remember almost nothing of it. All I know is that my family and I went to see it. Some might say "Well you were 10 of course you don't remember." And to that I say I watched Toy Story 3 (2010) and Avatar (2009) when they came out (toy story 3 on opening week actually) and I remember way more from those experiences then I did with John Carter.
