    Illumination's most recent movie "Migration" was thought to be a box office bomb at first, but proceeded to make over double it's budget fairly easily because the movie only cost around 75 million to make.
    Meanwhile Disney's Wish has only just now made back it's production budget over a month into it's theatrical run and would still likely need to make another 200 million to break even.
    Remember when people were making fun of Illumination for trying to keep their budgets small?

    • @DanteToska
      @DanteToska 8 місяців тому +212

      To be fair, people never complained about the fact that Illumination kept their budgets small, they complained about how their animation style never changes and their movies felt too "safe."

    • @missplayer30
      @missplayer30 8 місяців тому +60

      At least they have an excuse for bad, bland and play it safe movies (I stopped caring after wasting money and times on Minions, until Mario, because it's Mario), Disney on the other hand doesn't.

    • @Saturnlock
      @Saturnlock 8 місяців тому +16

      Except production budget only accounts for making the movie. It doesn't generally account for marketing or distribution. So factoring all that in, movies that double their budget aren't necessarily successful.

      Disney really need to stop making the animated movies with the same theme

    • @devofficialchannel
      @devofficialchannel 8 місяців тому +24

      Don't most of Illumination's budget get spent on marketing and merchandise? Like even if the movies aren't exactly "great", their merch is very popular (especially among children) so it's kinda why they were able to keep afloat.
      Plus, their movies play it VERY safe to the extent that it's not exactly "bad", but it doesn't do anything to stand out. So it is perfect for families who just want to spend time watching a movie with a plot very digestable for kids and also why they do well in the box office.

    It doesn't surprise me that Disney movies flop. Their biggest source of income is families, and as a parent, why would you spend 50-100 dollars at the movies when you can just stream it on Disney Plus. I mean movie sales as a whole are down, I don't even remember the last time I've seen a packed theater before, but streaming definitely has taken the key money makers for Disney, if they even care. I also think that today's children don't really care about Disney movies because there are so many other forms of entertainment that those movies get pushed to the wayside.

    • @333arianna
      @333arianna 8 місяців тому +10

      I’m honestly glad that big budget blockbusters are losing insane amounts of money at the box office - not because I don’t like Marvel and Disney or franchise films in general, I do, but because hopefully the people in charge will realize that audiences are getting tired pretty quickly of low-effort, low-risk and emotionally shallow movies. The reason why other big blockbusters like Barbie, Spider-verse, and even Oppenheimer, were huge successes in theaters is because the interest for mainstream cinema is still there, people are just tired of seeing the same things play out over and over. It’s time for big production companies to start valuing creativity over safety.

    Streaming has backfired for many studios. Sure, it's a constant revenue stream, but not only does content need to constantly be pumped out to keep people coming back, not only does that content have to actually be quality enough to get people interested, but the general public is now being conditioned to skip the theater and wait for everything to come to streaming. Those huge bursts of box office revenue made quarterly reports look good to investors, and those effectively being gone now make studios look anemic.

    Movies really need to go for the low budget high box office method. Godzilla Minus One was 15 million dollars for a budget and made 90 million back. But it can’t be helped much for the budget when for most big movies the majority of the budget just goes to paying big actors to be in them. The Rom takes 20 million dollars to have him in a movie so if he was in Minus One the budget would’ve been 45 million, half of what they made in box office making them spend 45 million to get 45 million

    You know among all the flops Disney has had last year, Elemental being the one that came out relatively successful is one of the most impressive things that's ever happened to a movie ever. Like from a miserable opening weekend to a once again successful pixar movie? That's the biggest comeback of all time and I couldn't be happier for that movie. Soul, Luca, and Turning Red are getting a second chance via a limited theatrical run, which inspires hope for Pixar

    • @pablocasas5906
      @pablocasas5906 8 місяців тому

      Well, the re-issue of Soul grossed an estimated $125k in the U.S. alone on Friday (from 1,350 locations). Those aren't very big numbers. I don't know if this will improve or if Luca and Turning Red will do better, most people have already seen the movie on Disney+, and while seeing a movie on the big screen is a nice experience, theatrical re-issues aren't as popular as they used to, I think they haven't been popular since the VHS became a household item in the 80s. Some people are saying Disney is just re-releasing these movies since they postponed the release of other films like Elio and Snow White to 2025 and they needed something to fill in the gaps.
      Not to mention that Disney laid off 25% of the staff at Pixar, so I don't think things are doing that great at the studio right now

    Haunting in Venice!!!! No one saw this film!!! I really loved the style and a Poriot flick always gets me excited. I did not expect the twist by the way.
    Across the Spiderverse! Miguel did nothing wrong he's just a silly goober. Also the art book paintings of Miguel scared me.
    Mutant Mayhem! This is one of the only films I watched twice and I loved it both times. It's just long enough it doesn't drag, and the style is so unique! All the actors did so good and you can feel the connection with the brothers cause of that. Also Donnie is a JoJo fan confirmed.
    Barbie was good. I cried. Women.
    Hunger Games. I went to pee before the film, walk back in, and President Snow, infamous child murderer, is naked. Crazy.
    Five Nights at Freddy's. I saw it twice, loved it so much. I had been waiting for that movie since the 107 fnaf facts video. It wasn't a good film, but it was what I wanted for so long. A campy horror film about fnaf.
    MARIO. I LOVED IT. I'm a huge video game nerd, so me and my brother were just yelling at the screen the whole time like "HOLY SHIT THAT'S THE PURPLE BUTTERFLY FROM OUTSIDE PEACH'S CASTLE IN SUPER MARIO 64"
    and that's all the notable ones. Thanks for reading this if you did lmao.
    Also I ate so many bunch a crunch this year I'm in shock I don't have diabetes.
    ALSO WATCH ECHOES IF YOU CAN ECHOES LOOKS SO GOOD I LOVE NATIVE AMERICANS I'M ONE OF THEM YEAH WOOOOOOOO!!!

    I'm just really sick of people doomsaying that Disney's going to go bankrupt or some shit because they had ONE bad year.
    Disney will be fine. If they survived the 70s & 80s, they can survive anything

      To be fair to them, Disney has been in a slump for 4 years, not just one. Their last successful animated film in particular was 2019's Frozen 2.
      That whole battle with the Florida governor, the alleged FTX involvement and Disney+ hemorrhaging money are often brought up as well when people question Disney's longevity.

    The movies I enjoyed last year were the Mario Movie, FNAF, ATSV, GOTGV3, and TMNT Mutant Mayhem. I do like other movies from last year but those were my top 5.

    Disneys biggest problem can be summed up well to what my dead said about frozen 2, “it seemed they cared about cramming as many songs into the story instead of having a story with the songs…”
