One hilarious censorship story I heard is according to Alex Hirsh(the creator of gravity falls) in the Pool episode there’s a scene where Stan was trying to shin sunlight into Gideon’s eyes to get him out of a pool chair(Naturally this backfires on him). I remember in my country (Colombia) there was a really, really inconsistent policy regarding the word "Kill" when it came to the spanish translation. Sometimes in shows like Gravity falls, in the spanish dub, they felt the need to replace the word "kill" or any other word related to it with "eliminate" or "destroy", which made it sound so awkward, especially since there was a lot of other shows, even some shows that had a lower age rating, like Spongebob, Fairly odd parents and Avatar Last Airbender that had no problem using the word "kill" in the spanish translation
@@alchemistofsteel8099 Reminds me of a Polish dub of an animated movie I watched as a kid used an idiom that literally translated to "hates corpses" (which means "it's urgent") and follows it up "and speaking of corpses, we're about to get rid of those guys once and for all".
I wonder what were US networks thinking when they imported (by their standards) definetly not child appropiate anime, only to censor it to oblivion, and remove any implication that foreign cultures exist
One Piece is shonen material over there in Japan: Japan has different standards on what's considered appropriate & honestly I respect Japan for that. The Netherlands is also kinda like that except Purno de Purno is also a kids' show over there & nowhere else will it be considered that.
The fact that any of the entries in the Tenchi series were even aired on Cartoon Network, albeit edited blows my mind. It's the farthest away from "appropriate for children" that I can think of.
Doraemon's an interesting case, the censorship was requested by TV Asahi, the original broadcaster, not Disney XD. There was also a separate dub produced for the UK by the European licence holder, who made their own because they thought the US dub changed too much. The UK dub changed nothing, except for the names. All Japanese text was left in, as well as culture and an accurately translated theme song. What's funny is that all of the actors for the US dub just assumed that the dub for the UK would simply be theirs, so they were surprised when a cast of Animax voice actors showed up, all uncredited.
you know, this reminded me of the Gundam censorship in the USA. After the barely-censored Wing decided to give the Deathscythe an upgrade that was quite literally called "Deathscythe Hell", G Gundam's localization had to suffer. The God Gundam became the Burning Gundam (which does tie better to its predecessor, the Shining Gundam), the Devil Gundam became the Dark Gundam, and the Death Army became the Dark Army. Of note, a few minor changes also include less stereotypical names for a few of the more...Punch Out-y Gundams...but the biggest crime of this was that _they took Tequila Gundam from us_

So, something bizarre was actually 4kids dub of Kinnikuman Nisei, AKA Ultimate Muscle. I actually researched the entire japanese version and despite the fact that there was nearly no blood, next to nothing was censored out beyond the words "death, dying" or "kill". They could still SHOW characters being horribly maimed since there was no blood (including a character getting his skull crushed). But the reason I bring this up is because they made the dialogue downright raunchy at times in the dub. The most notable moment is in the fight between Kid Muscle and Hydrozoa. Hydrozoa's signature attack has him using his jelly body to trap his opponents inside of him, start to drown them, then smash their head on the ring post, an attack which he did to Wally Tusket, a walrus man (this is important later). Kid Muscle snuck an octopus into his pocket which he coaxed to spray ink while he was inside of Hydrozoa, and it resulted in showing all of hydrozoa's organs, which he could freely move around. Again, no blood but full internal anatomy display is okay. However here is where the lines differ. In the Japanese version, One character asks why it's a big deal that his internal organs are invisible. Terry replies "If they were visible then his opponents could deliver a lethal/disabling strike directly to them." in the 4kids dub, however, Terry says "Well yeah they are invisible. Would YOU want a 400lbs walrus delivering a right hook to YOUR prostate?"
4kids insisted everyone in that Show Expect Kid Musscle has the Japanese Text removed from their forehead but they really did not edit much out of it fron the japanese version. THe last 20 or so episodes only exist thanks to 4KIds too. The manga was much worse and more violent the anime toned it down alot everywhere.
@@Acidonia150reborn Yes, a good example is when Jade/Jeager does his Red Rain of Berlin on Gazelleman. In the anime, Gazelleman just collapses. In the Manga, he's completely cut open from belly to jaw. He survives in both cases though.
Fun Fact: When working on the dub for Ultimate Muscle, Eric Staurt and one other guy (I forget who) were trying to come up with a name for Gazelleman (copyright issues). They learned about the Dik-Dik (basically a miniature gazelle) and were going to go with that, but the other guy wanted them to add "van Dik" to the name. So we got Dik-Dik van Dik. Also, Hollywood Bowl. His whole thing about trying to kill Kid and "eat" his body (flush him down his toilet bowl) horrified me when I was a kid. The burp he gave in that fantasy "What-If" thing after eating Kid didn't help.
The only censorships I can recall at the moment are scenes involving characters peeing themselves. Usually by hastily blocking it out or replacing the pee with farts.
@@kaylemathewcomendador6964 Actually Kid Muscle blatantly pees himself in the fight with Dial-bolic/Teltel boy (the phone wrestler), which gives him and his friends the clue that if his opponent gets wet, it will hurt him. This is intact in the dub.
What makes One Piece the undeniable WORST recipient when it came to 4Kids' censorship is that they didn't just censor blood, violence, dialogue etc. but they even cut out ENTIRE STORY ARCS. Arcs that come up later in the story in big ways too, meaning that if their dub had continued they would've had huge plot holes when characters and events from those arcs were referenced.
Actually, that's not entirely 4Kids' fault. Toei forced them to take One Piece, as they only wanted Ultimate Muscle and Magical Do-Re-Mi. Basically, Toei said "Take One Piece too, or you don't get anything". 4Kids found it too violent and didn't want it, but did want the others. When the license expired, they were more than happy to drop the anime. Toei also forced them to skip several arcs so Chopper could be introduced to Western audiences. Actually, Toei forced One Piece on 4Kids because it was so popular in Japan and wanted it out in America as soon as possible for added profits. When Toei released the episode that introduced Chopper, the episode because incredibly popular. And since 4Kids was behind by a large amount, they made 4Kids skip all those arcs. Something similar happened with Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. They were going to dub the fourth and final season, but 5Ds came out in Japan (and was very popular), so Konami and TV Tokyo forced them to stop working on GX and instead work on 5Ds. 4Kids wasn't really happy about that.
@@SaiyanGamer95 Ironically 5D's got the same 'arc cut' fate as GX, I know I need to finish 5D's but it's a slog. I feel sorry for 4kids, having to drop seasons, now I know it wasn't a dickish move. I remember reading somewhere that the ending of GX in the dub implies Jaden DIED after fusing with Yubel (Thankfully I follow the subs for plot, which makes Zexal all the more traumatising) but I can't be sure that it is correct, as I can't find where I read it again Edit: Found the GX refrence, I was a tiny bit off, but the cut point still implies Jaden dies
@@kirbstagoontheaxolotl Honestly, people tend to be a bit hard on 4kids, typically not knowing what goes on behind the scenes. Such as they're sort of at the mercy of the original distributors. The censorship they're so infamous for; for starters, the shows they air are for kids and different countries have different standards as to what can be shown to kids. Not to mention there's Standards & Practices to abide by. If parents complain, the network can get in trouble. And when they make a major change, they have to go to the original distributors and explain why they're changing or removing it before getting the go-ahead.
God yugioh GX censorship is hilarious. That hot sauce censorship actually changes the story. 10:39 I once wondered how would Shaman King look like if they censored all weapons, I thought that they would make the weapons into ones that are just replicas but now I see that if they were to censor the weapons they should just do this.
Good that you mention Sonic X, as I grew up with the 4kids dub of that show. Think my favorite (aka most hated) change they made to that show was the relationship between Tails and Cosmo. The original version of the show makes it very obvious that they have feelings for each other, and the final episode has them outright express their love for each other. The dub, for some baffling reason, completely removes that (or at least makes it far less obvious). It's like 4kids thought kids couldn't handle the concept of two characters being in love with each other (which is especially messed up considering the context of said final episode) If not for the fact that there was an episode entirely dedicated to developing said relationship - Mission: Match-Up - I don't doubt that they would've scrubbed any mention of it entirely.
I'm rewatching the Japanese dub of Sonic X rn..I can't wait for season 3 but also I don't want to cry! I think the most egregious thing 4Kids did was remove Live and Learn... that shit is sacred.
@@kittycatmeowmeow963 most of it is on youtube. Just search "Sonic X japanese dub." Some pieces are missing so you'll have to watch a bit of the English dub (also on yt) if you don't already know the plot.
I recall hearing that 4Kids text removal was not 4Kids's doing, but instead of an in-between company with the intent of having the other dubs put in translated text. Unfortunately, that last part did not come to fruition.
5:32 the best copy of this idea for me was in Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, the show it was based on (Kamen Rider Ryuki) had pretty violent deaths of certain characters, so when Adness entertainment was adapting it like Power Rangers 4Kids made them change it where characters got "Vented" and went to the "Advent void", as stupid as that was it did factor into to the final arc of that show with all the original Riders from VENTara being freed to kick the main villain Xaviax's ass so at least it did more than just be a substitute for death
one of my favourite examples is in one of the recent Spongebob episodes they reference the Squidward's Suicide creepypasta in the original airing but in reruns they change it to.... a baby Squidward pooping his diaper..... yes really
About Philippines censorship, I love how they changed the name assassination Classroom to invincible teacher. Geez, I wonder how it would affect the plot for that.
1:58 you’re right about the UK but even then after 9pm anything goes basically which is how the channel Film 4 has aired Deadpool uncensored. However before 9pm movies are botched especially by one of the main channel ITV which have given us such classics as changing the scene in Bond film License to Kill where Belnecio Del Toro gets thrown into a grinding by randomly lingering on a shot of the character of Pam along with the TV version of that film opening with “If we’re lucky we just might be able to catch the baaaaaa”. No Time To Die also had several minutes of the opening cut out including Saffins jump scare and him getting shot and waking back up. Off course even the childrens channel CBBC infamously decided to air episode 1 adult, hardcore Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood with all the swearing, sex, nudity and violence removed and shows like Merlin with some cuts to remove various scenes.
The shadow realm in yugioh does exist in the original, called "yami no sekai" (world of darkness). There have even been some instances, where people have been sent and trapped there, like Yugi's grandfather when he was sealed inside the card by Pegasus. But the original "shadow realm" is featured way less frequent than in the dub. 4kids basicly expanded on it and used it everywhere, where characters were dueling with their lifes on the line.
4:09 4Kids went from naming rice balls to jelly donuts to popcorn balls. Close but so far... honestly shows they were very inconsistent when dubbing anime.
The weird thing is the Japanese culture changes are inconsistent, there's a clip in the Pokemon dub where he flat out calls it a rice ball. THAT must've been confusing. "But I thought they were donuts!"
As a kid I actually saw some of the uncensored stuff in cartoons now I don't remember all of them but it was quite fun as a kid and at that time my brain didn't really understand what the fuck the characters were saying or showing I even saw some adult shows like Family Guy because my mom didn't understood it was for adults so I got to see some blood and gore no I did not get traumatized I turned out alright in the end and now I can relive them all over again anytime I want it on the internet as long as I have to pay for something CURSE YOU GREEDY COMPANIES!
i think my favorite piece of censorship ever will be that one steven universe song where pearl and rose fuse and its really intimate in the original but the censored version (i think in the uk? its always the uk) just keeps cutting to greg playing the guitar and close up shots of his face. dont remember if that was a hoax or not but it was hilarious nonetheless
In the Indian dub of Shin-chan, they had an episode where the Nohara family goes to a burger place changed to a "donut' shop. Yokai Watch has the most wildly inconsistent editing I've ever seen. There is an episode where Nate has a sleepover with his friends and turns on a channel that shows girls in bikinis with cat ears, which was censored in the dub to have them clothed, yet in the Komasan Taxi segment with Manjimutt, a poster with a similar bikini model with cat ears wasn't edited out. One of the most baffling things of all is the episode with Robonyan "getting his screw inspected" they cut the scene in the Japanese version where Robonyan gets penetrated by the blade, and replace the line he says with "it tickles". However, in the Komasan Taxi segment that comes after it, the scene was shown completely uncut, and the dialogue that he says in the English version somehow manages to imply even heavier that he may be gay than the Japanese version, like he straight up says something like "Sometimes a young robot goes through a cycle where he desires to push past the limits of his circuits" or something like that.
It is interesting that 4Kids were the producers of the 2003 TMNT series. Since that show really pushed the censorship limits. To the point that 4kids never aired certain episodes from season 4 and flat out did not air season 5. Instead requesting the team at Mirage studios to dial it back a lot. hence Fast Forward and Back to the Sewer and the tonal whiplash those season are. Now that you can find season 5 somewhere.
Fun Fact: 4Kids was going to use an English dub of We Are, but Toei made them use a rap instead, as to appeal to American kids. That rap was done by someone outside of 4Kids, with the guy only being given the synopsis to make a rap about the show. The guy who made it is even on UA-cam and made a part 2.
I saw Toy Story 2 the other day and noticed they completely took out scenes from the movie to censor it on Disney Plus. Like during the credits, they have outtakes of the movie. One outtake they took out was stinky Pete in his box talking to two Barbie's saying he could get them into Toy Story 3. Disney plus censors a lot for some reason.
The 4Kids version of Sonic X made a huge sin when they removed Maria's death from Episode 37. People who played Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast or GameCube knew about her death and it was Gerald's motivation for revenge. In the dub, they merely "took her away". They didn't acknowledge her terminal disease
I've actually seen a lot of people say that they saw right through the censorship (presumebly without knowing how SA2 went) and didn't mind it, that it still gets the point across.
Here's a nice Example About Censored for TV: In the movie Ghostbusters, They Re-Recorded some lines with no Swearing just to air it on Television And they had to edit some Scenes Out (Like for Example, They had to Edit out The Entire Scene about Ray's Dream sequence Because It has to do with Sexual Content and There Were kids Watching The film with their Family)

I think the same thing happened in English with Gravity Falls?
@Schnort I don't think so. Bill says he wants to turn someone into a corpse at one point
@@alchemistofsteel8099 Reminds me of a Polish dub of an animated movie I watched as a kid used an idiom that literally translated to "hates corpses" (which means "it's urgent") and follows it up "and speaking of corpses, we're about to get rid of those guys once and for all".
I caught Snakes on a Plane being played in a TV channel a few months ago. And the iconic dialogue was left intact, it was glorious.

The HK/UKI dub did censor out some things then just name changes, like violence, alcohol, and tobacco.
you know, this reminded me of the Gundam censorship in the USA.
Of note, a few minor changes also include less stereotypical names for a few of the more...Punch Out-y Gundams...but the biggest crime of this was that _they took Tequila Gundam from us_
Then Build Fighters has another Gundam called Burning Gundam worldwide.
@@Acidonia150reborn ironically, the alleged Burning Gundam was a close-combat Gundam, maybe they were harkening to the God Gundam there?
The whole "Devil Gundam" becoming "Dark Gundam" reminds me of how the localization for Puyo Puyo changed "Satan" to "Dark Prince".

Part 2 was censored
Terry replies "If they were visible then his opponents could deliver a lethal/disabling strike directly to them."
in the 4kids dub, however, Terry says "Well yeah they are invisible.

Agreed
The little garden arc was spared by 4kids because it would have turned out awful!
@@SaiyanGamer95 Ironically 5D's got the same 'arc cut' fate as GX, I know I need to finish 5D's but it's a slog. I feel sorry for 4kids, having to drop seasons, now I know it wasn't a dickish move. I remember reading somewhere that the ending of GX in the dub implies Jaden DIED after fusing with Yubel (Thankfully I follow the subs for plot, which makes Zexal all the more traumatising) but I can't be sure that it is correct, as I can't find where I read it again
Edit: Found the GX refrence, I was a tiny bit off, but the cut point still implies Jaden dies
9:53 nice boat
God yugioh GX censorship is hilarious. That hot sauce censorship actually changes the story. In the original the story the dudes dad was an alcoholic and it actually affected him but for as one reason they have the alcoholics kid play it straight but no one else does so you have this kid struggling with an alcoholic father but everyone is making jokes about how wierd it is he likes hot sauce so much
So in the 'new' version, the dad is a hot sauce addict?

Good that you mention Sonic X, as I grew up with the 4kids dub of that show. Think my favorite (aka most hated) change they made to that show was the relationship between Tails and Cosmo. The original version of the show makes it very obvious that they have feelings for each other, and the final episode has them outright express their love for each other. The dub, for some baffling reason, completely removes that (or at least makes it far less obvious). It's like 4kids thought kids couldn't handle the concept of two characters being in love with each other (which is especially messed up considering the context of said final episode)
If not for the fact that there was an episode entirely dedicated to developing said relationship - Mission: Match-Up - I don't doubt that they would've scrubbed any mention of it entirely.
I'm rewatching the Japanese dub of Sonic X rn..I can't wait for season 3 but also I don't want to cry!

Unfortunately, that last part did not come to fruition.
Didn't you hear that ... from this video?
5:32 the best copy of this idea for me was in Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, the show it was based on (Kamen Rider Ryuki) had pretty violent deaths of certain characters, so when Adness entertainment was adapting it like Power Rangers 4Kids made them change it where characters got "Vented" and went to the "Advent void", as stupid as that was it did factor into to the final arc of that show with all the original Riders from VENTara being freed to kick the main villain Xaviax's ass so at least it did more than just be a substitute for death

I play hoi4
And this is why I love South Park. Kind of crazy that, out of over 300 episodes produced, only five have been banned outright.
i think my favorite piece of censorship ever will be that one steven universe song where pearl and rose fuse and its really intimate in the original but the censored version (i think in the uk? its always the uk) just keeps cutting to greg playing the guitar and close up shots of his face. dont remember if that was a hoax or not but it was hilarious nonetheless
10:25 one place does the opposite and just removes her top for some reason.
O.O
I remember when the regular show episode about the killer taxi aired, I heard Mordecai say “holy crap” and was a little surprised

4:37 This meme will never die! That's the good thing in this dub than anything else! 🤣🤣🤣 No disrespect on the RAP opening though

It was removed after the MeToo controversy
10:31 I'm actually surprised dressed up darling aired on tv
The 4Kids version of Sonic X made a huge sin when they removed Maria's death from Episode 37. People who played Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast or GameCube knew about her death and it was Gerald's motivation for revenge. In the dub, they merely "took her away". They didn't acknowledge her terminal disease
Which also created alot of plot holes
And also removed live and learn from episode 38.
I've actually seen a lot of people say that they saw right through the censorship (presumebly without knowing how SA2 went) and didn't mind it, that it still gets the point across.
