  • Changing the oil in your BMW is one of the most important things to keep your engine healthy. Being able to do it yourself will save you a ton of money, and sometimes it's just fun to open the hood and get your hands dirty. In this video, I share some tips that I've learned from 4 years worth of oil changes on my E90 BMW 330xi.
    Oil I use: amzn.to/2DZ3BY6 (6.8qts are required)
    Mann Oil Filter: geni.us/HC3M
    Oil filter wrench: amzn.to/2GKxMUL
    Torque wrench: amzn.to/2EdXx0U

You should loose the filter, do not remove it, before draining the oil. This will make the draining much faster, as there is no vacuum created by the oil leaving the engine.

  • @markbeavers7155
    @markbeavers7155 5 років тому +13

You need to torque the filter cap. 18 ft lbs., same as the drain plug. Starting point and new o-ring can change the end position. Your blue dot may not line up when properly torqued. Also, Mann filters make the BMW filter. They just put a BMW stamp on the end. As far as oil, I prefer Liqui-Moly Special Tech 5-W30. I live in the south, so you would want to use a weight oil for the colder weather in your area. As long as your oil meets the LL-01 standard BMW recommends, you should be good.

Another good thing to always do is to prime the oil filter. I pour about a quarter of a quart into the oil filter before I install it. Might seem small, but it doesn't add any mess, and it prevents the engine from any extra wear saturating the filter might cause.

Tip / Hack I do for my oil change :: Right before you screw the Oil Filter Cap back on, I pour like 2 seconds worth of good oil in the main tank and let it drain back out. This kinda reassures me that no old black oil is being mixed in with my good oil and you can see how clean it looks underneath coming back out.

I like to use Mobil 1 ESP 0W40 in my BMW 120d. Read a lot of good stuff on it and also it's always one of the best oils in objective oil analysis. But since Mobil 1 doesn't offer a 5W40 LL04 that I personally like based on laboratory tests I might switch to the Motul x-clean 5W40 soon. My dad likes Castrol better, so I always put Castrol Oil in my dad's E90 and it also runs just fine.

If you do a lot of city driving sitting at the traffic lights or crawling bumper to bumper for length of time, is better to use the 40 viscosity grade.

First hand I can attest that in my 07 Merc AMG 63 when I used Mobil 1 Formula M 5W40 I would have clatter on start up and ticking from the lifters if the car sat over 3 days. With Liqui Moly Leichtlauf 5W40 clatter on start up is gone and it stays in the lifters over a week...rarely do I have ticking. Good stuff and good in both my E90 and F30 BMWs.

I think either one would be good, but BMW has a much bigger online community (especially if you get a 3 Series). There are tons of DIY's for these cars between my channel, BMW Fanatic and many more. The N52 engine which is what I have in my 330xi is one of the most reliable engines that BMW made in recent years

That's one thing that pulled me to BMW. The huge online community and the fact that there much more common. For the Acura, it really was quite hard to find info on them. Very excited for the day when I can officially say I own one haha.
Now as for going through a dealer or buying private party, do you have a opinion over the other?

I had an '08 Acura TL Type-S w/ 6-speed manual for a year. It's a good car for sure, but it needed to lose 200lbs up front, and be rear-drive, both of which can't happen. Also, TL lacked personality.
I have a 2010 128i w/manual now, and LOVE it. That N52 motor has this turbine/electric motor-like smoothness, and the car feels dynamic, and responsive.
      Get the 328i.

As to that oil leak you had....I bet you a dollar that you had the O-ring in the wrong spot on the oil filter housing....if it`s all the way up top, you will get a leak. It has to be down in that second groove in the housing to seal properly (look @ 3:20 on your video). I use Mann filters too, also the same Castrol synthetic, changed every 7500 miles.

Nice video. Subscribed! Nice one there with the dipstick! I had to look twice.
But perhaps you could virtually extract the oil through your virtual dipstick tube :-)
I have both an A4 and a 328i and let me tell you the oil change on the A4 using a Mityvac extractor is so easy. No need to lift the car and I can extract the whole 4.6L. But the oil must be hot to be easily extracted.
BTW I use Castrol. Simply because it's easier for me to find on sale. CA$35 oil change (with filter) on the A4. CA$50 with filter on the 328i. $100 cheaper than the stealership.
Are you planning to change the transmission oil and the front / read differentials? I think the transfer case is totally sealed on this model. My 328i is still too young for that but I did it on the A4.
    Keep on the good work!

So true. I use a vacuum oil extractor on my Q5 and with oil filter on the top. There is no jacking the car up or getting down on the ground anywhere in the process.. I love my e93 but it's a bitch to do an oil change. My main jack is not low enough to fit under the car so I need drive the 328 up on boards or sand bags to fit the jack under the front, then put it on jack stands and crawl underneath to catch the oil. Why couldn't bimmer engineers have left the plugged dipstick hole like Audi did. On the other hand, at least they left a little door underneath so you can access the drain plug. Seems obvious but lots of newer cars now require you to take off the whole bottom windguard pan.

I worked for Pennzoil for over 15 years, first as Regional Technical Service Manager based in Oil City, PA, then at the Regional Headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. I was promoted to National Technical Manager at the Houston, TX HQ. I then went on to be the Product Manager for Pennzoil’s heavy duty (diesel) engine oils. Bottom line - I can tell you with absolute certainty that Pennzoil is the best oil, backed up dynamometer testing as well as field testing. I know because I know the data.

Keep up the great vids. 2008 528i with 130K. Is Castrol 5-30 high mileage a good oil to use? Also, what do you think of STP oil filters?

Hi JUSTIN ... as happy New Owner of a bmw (2011 BMW 5 series 550i), I saw my oil level turn on, so I read the oil type instructions and bought 1qt of the “synthetic” high mileage 5w30. The ONLY problem is that I bought a MOBIL 1 instead of Castol. Should I be worried? I already put it in my engine.

Which Jack Stand do you use? Which Jack stand adapter for the e90 Jack points? Could you do a video on properly and safely jacking the car for service...like oil? Do you jack the front center and then put jack stands, etc. Great channel.

You can just pour the oil with a funnel when done into the 6quart oil bottle sold at the autoshop +1more quart that is needed to make sure you're good on a 2006 325i 6cyl (e90). No need to take your container with you. Just drop it off and go 👍

Great video as always. I usually shake the bottle of oil before it goes into my BMW because when I don’t, I noticed a powder substance at the bottom of the bottles. It is more noticeable when it’s in a yellow container like Pennzoil has which is what I use. I was told that stuff at the bottom are cleaning additives and protecting packs from the manufacture. What are your thoughts? Out of habit, I now shake it not stirred every oil change and when topping off.
    Cheers!

You saw a minor drop-up of some of the formulation’s additives. Not to go too far into organic chemistry, the purer the base oils being used, the more “saturated “ the molecules oil are, making them less likely to break down and deteriorate. The amount of residue you see is negligible.

prefer Castrol 0-30 or 0-40. I did try Kendall 5-40 since it had the BMW LL 04 on it. It seem to be ok going back to Castrol. Nice vid. thanks

Shell has been chosen by BMW as their only recommended global supplier for aftermarket engine oils. Their previous supplier was Castrol. I've been told by a BMW mechanic that Pennzoil is the maker of Shell oils.

one suggestion when you pour oil from bottle keep opening on upside that let oil come out easily without spilling. so you hold bottle exactly opposite way opening on upside and handle and otherbody down side
