How to Change EVERY FLUID in Your BMW | OIL, COOLANT, ZF 8 SPEED, DIFF, BRAKES

  • In this video, Bryan and I change EVERY fluid on my 2017 BMW 340i. We changed the oil, coolant, differential fluid, transmission fluid and brake fluid. As with any DIY, work at your own risk.
    While these fluids are fundamentally simple to change, a lift will make some of them MUCH easier to change. Big thanks to Bryan and Kies Motorsports for offing his expertise and access to his shop!

    At 16:55 when Bryan explains checking the transmission fluid level, he meant to say "fill plug" rather than "drain plug." You will use the fill plug to both fill and check the level. DON'T take out the "drain plug" after adding fluid or it will all pour out on the ground lol.

    Hi, I was wondering if you rechecked the transmission oil level after driving the car and letting the oil cooler thermostat open at 75 degrees? According to the ZF fill instructions this step is needed for all cars with an oil cooler. Actually they say to 'overfill' the trans 0.5 liters and then go for a drive. Not sure how you can overfill it without spilling allot of fluid.

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  7 місяців тому +1

      We did re-check after going for a drive and the level was good. As far as overfilling, if you use a syringe or pump, you’ll be able to push fluid in faster than it flows out. Just have the fill plug ready so you can quickly screw it in. It’s messy so keep a pan underneath the car to catch any excess that overflows.

    I just got a 2024 530i, also factory filled with 0w20. I felt it was a bit to thon. I asked the BMW dealer, and the service dept. they told me tgat they use 0w30 after 60k to 70k high mialeage. However I could request to use 0w30 on my next pil change and they would no prob. They said the ow30 provides more protection, , but the 0w20 is for better fuel economy. Then I asked if I could use 5w30, and they said I could, and they have it, but 0w30 flows better. I'm in Miami. Not sure where you guys are at, perhaps the extreme heat we have here , BMW has different fill options. I personally prefer the 0w30

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  8 місяців тому +1

      Hey! At the very least you will need metric sockets, a set of both Torx and E Torx sockets, a torque wrench, and some sort of software that can interface with the car’s computers. A set of interior pry tools will be helpful too.
      I personally use BimmerGeeks ProTool which is an app you can get for android devices. I got a cheap tablet from walmart just to run ProTool. You will need this or something like it if you ever replace the battery. It can also show live parameters like how we were able to check the transmission temp in the video. You can also use it for programming if you change any of the electronics inside the car. For example i Installed a digital gauge cluster a few months ago and used ProTool to program it to the car.
      I also use an app called Carly which doesn’t have quite as many features, but it’s more convenient for me to use on the go since it works with iPhone.

    I have a 2017 430 and bought some blue coolant because I got a warning light on for low. However I'm aware that they started using green coolant so if the dealership topped off my blue coolant with green coolant would I need to use green or blue to top off? I read that you can use green in blue but not blue in green so I'm a little confused if I should add blue or green even though the car originally came with blue. After watching/reading various how tos regarding the transmission refill, apparently, after carrying out the procedure in the video one should either add 0.5 ltr extra of oil, or, run the transmission until the transmission cooler opens (75°C), then let the trans cool back down to 40°C, and recheck level. Obviously this depends on whether or not a cooler is fitted.

      We were following the service PDF from ZF. After shooting this, we test drover the car, let the transmission cool down to 40C, took out the fill plug, and there was still a steady stream of fluid coming out.

      When discussing the transmission fill process, (between 16:50-17:10) did he mean to say Fill Plug rather than Drain Plug? If you run the engine until the trans fluid reaches 40C, then remove the Drain Plug to check the level, all the fluid will start draining out!

    Really great videos, I love all of your content. And this is very good as a walkthrough, even for us who is used to mechanical work. Just easier to be prepared with tools etc, instead of going out to check what I need. I love how meticulously you are doing it. But as a request, please use gloves. Hands is really hard noticing it but I’ve had oil splashing other parts, like legs. It’s not many minutes before the oil actually gets absorbed into the skin. How come you went back to 0w20?

      I heard from a Liqui Moly rep that the best choice is the viscosity printed under the hood so that’s what I’ve been using the last couple oil changes. Although 5w30 is also within spec according to the owner’s manual.

    Hey Justin, thanks for another great video! I'm about to service the transmission of my 2018 BMW M240i X-drive and I bought a ZF pan & filter with 7 Liters of Liqui Moly Top Tec 1800 ATF. But now I'm hesitant to go with Liqui Moly because there will be about 2 liters of the factory ZF fluid left behind and I'm concerned about mixing them. Am I correct in assuming this is what you did and if so, have you noticed any changes in the performance of the transmission?

    When should Transmission Oil be changed and the pan replaced?

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  7 місяців тому +1

      ZF, the transmission manufacturer, recommends 50,000 mile fluid intervals. Some people replace the cover every other fluid change. Much like the plastic engine valve cover, there's no set interval for replacement, but they can crack and leak as they age. If you upgrade to an aluminum pan, it should last the life of the car.
